Team news, injury updates and latest odds for England vs Germany as Three Lions target historic win

ENGLAND hope to end 25 years of hurt by exacting revenge on Germany for the Euros heartbreak they inflicted in 1996.  And Gareth Southgate – who missed a penalty against Berti Vogts’ side in the semi-finals that year – wants his players to write their own history at Wembley.

Tonight’s highly anticipated clash between England and Joachim Low’s aces will be the 300th international match to be played at the iconic venue.
And a Three Lions victory would see them set up a quarter-final duel with Sweden or Ukraine.
England are yet to win a knockout fixture in 90 minutes at a European Championship tournament with four of their matches having gone to penalty shootouts.
And they have only progressed once via penalties – against Spain in the quarter-finals at Euro 96.
The clash with Germany will kick-off at 5pm at Wembley.
It will be aired on BBC1 – and streamed on BBCiPlayer – with a preview starting at 4pm.

    What’s the form?
England have clashed 13 times with Germany at Wembley – losing five and drawn two of the last seven encounters with their rivals at the venue
And while Low’s squad are not to be underestimated, some pundits believe the match will be the best chance England have had in years to beat the three-time European champions.
The 2014 World Cup winners have endured a mixed start to their Euros campaign this summer.
The team skippered by Manuel Neuer fell to a 2-0 defeat to France before narrowly sealing a dramatic 2-2 draw with minnows Hungary to finish third in Group F, with a 4-2 victory over Portugal sandwiched in between.
And former Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann told The Athletic his compatriots will be wary of the threat posed by some of Southgate’s players.
He said: “You have now Saka who played a good game against the Czech Republic.
“You have Phil Foden, who I really adore — I thought he had a brilliant year with Man City.”
England finished top of Group D above Croatia and the Czech Republic after beating both, with a draw against Scotland.
However, the team are yet to see skipper Harry Kane find the back of the net with both goals so far coming from Raheem Sterling.
Ahead of the game Southgate issued a rallying cry.
He said: “It’s a great opportunity for this team to make some history and give people memories of England-Germany fixtures for the future, that are a little different to some of the ones they’ve been flooded with over the last few days which mean absolutely nothing to them because they weren’t born.”
    Who’s in and who’s out
Some England fans and pundits hope Southgate will keep faith with the attacking approach deployed against the Czech Republic with a few calling for Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka to retain their places in the starting line-up.
And Southgate hinted that Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount could miss out on a return to the team’s first 11 after having to quarantine.

The Chelsea duo were forced to self-isolate after both came into contact with Billy Gilmour who tested positive for Covid-19.
But it is thought Phil Foden may be in line to return to England’s starting line-up, a move that could see Grealish move back to the bench.
Marcus Rashford believes Jadon Sancho could have a role to play in this last-16 duel thanks to his knowledge and experience of the Bundesliga.
The Borussia Dortmund winger netted eight goals and provided 12 assists for the German giants, who finished third in Germany’s top-flight last term.
And Harry Maguire is expected to join John Stones and Kyle Walker in a back three, with Kieran Trippier and Luke Shaw deployed as wing-backs.
Meanwhile, Lucas Goretzka could be set to start for Germany after smashing in a vital equalizer against Hungary that guaranteed his team’s place in the last-16
Lukas Klostermann remains out of action with a thigh muscle injury sustained before his side’s 4-2 win against Portugal.
But Serge Gnabry, Kai Havertz and Thomas Muller are all expected to be fit and available.

    Watch out for…….
Jack Grealish. Alongside Bukayo Saka, the Aston Villa skipper earned high praise for his performance against Czech Republic providing England with energy, pace and impetus in attack.
Grealish could make the difference against Germany should he be unleashed on the Germans from the start or come on as a sub.

    If the game is rubbish….
Cathy Hummels will be hoping Germany can register their sixth  win against England at Wembley.
The 33-year-old, who is the wife of Bayern Munich centre-back Mats, is an author with books on yoga and happiness as well as a sugar-free cookery publication.
The writer also took part in the German version of Strictly in 2015, partnering with Marius Lepure, the husband of Strictly UK star Oti Mabuse.

Watch Switzerland hero Yann Sommer refuse to celebrate after key Kylian Mbappe penalty save over VAR fears before check

SWITZERLAND hero Yann Sommer had to check with VAR whether he was on his line before celebrating after saving Kylian Mbappe’s penalty. The Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper, 32, stopped the deciding spot-kick in the shootout to knock France out of Euro 2020.

Les Bleus squandered a two-goal lead at the National Arena in Romania as Switzerland secured their place in the quarter-finals.
After nine successful penalties in the shootout, Mbappe’s effort from 12 yards out was expertly kept out by Sommer.
But instead of instantly celebrating, the ex-Basel ace had to check with the assistant referee to see whether he was off his line.
However replays showed his foot was just on the line, and after VAR deemed Sommer’s save to be legal, he sprinted off to the corner flag followed by his jubilant team-mates.
Fans quickly took to social media to state that VAR ruined Sommer’s moment.
One tweeted: “Sommer having to stop and check there is sickening. That’s why VAR should go. It’s not worth it.”
Another commented: “How awful Yann Sommer couldn’t celebrate that pen save straight away cos of VAR.”
A third added: Hate that Yann Sommer’s celebration was delayed because there was nearly a VAR check or something.”

Meanwhile one remarked: “VAR ruining Sommer’s moment there … he should be straight in crowd with his shirt off but he has to wait and see if it’s OK, moments gone.”
One simply stated: “How sad is that though that Sommer had to wait before he could celebrate his team beating the French. F*** VAR.”
Following the game, Sommer said: “What a game, what a night of football. The end is crazy, it is beautiful but how we came back during the game from two goals down, I am really proud of this team.
“We always believed, we always said if we are down we will go to the end and not give up. It was our chance to go through. it is incredible how we played.
“Anything is possible but that is always in football. We believed it, we are a small country but we have a lot of quality and have experience in our squad. We showed it.”

England boss Southgate hopes to mastermind a win against the Germans
England have played with a four-man defence for all three group games but are likely to play with wing-backs – the same system as Germany.
Although he has been struggling with a knock, Kieran Trippier could play as right wing-back, with Luke Shaw on the left.
Phil Foden, left out of the final group game against Czech Republic, hopes to return to the side.

But this means Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka could return to the bench.
Southgate has a fit 26-man squad, with Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell available again after their isolation period ended.
The pair travelled separately but will be reunited with the squad tomorrow.
Southgate said: “The only times they have been able to join up with us are when there’s not full team training, so that’s the best basis to make the decision.

“It is really complicated because there is the physical periodisation that you would want for a game like this and then there is the tactical training and the meetings.
“They have had to be in a separate room and dial in on zoom.
“The whole experience for them is very difficult but they are young players who can get on with things well.”

Euro 2020: Gareth Southgate tells England stars to show no fear against Germany… and go and become Three Lions LEGENDS

GARETH SOUTHGATE reckons England’s players can become football legends today — by lifting the whole nation with a famous win over Germany. The Three Lions are aiming to win only their second-ever knockout game at the Euros to reach the quarter-finals against their old rivals.

Southgate said: “Every time you pull an England shirt on you have the opportunity to score a goal that will be shown forever and to create a bit of skill or be involved in a match that lives on in the memory.
“That’s the beauty of playing for your country.
“If you think of all the big players in history, there are significant memories in club football, European football.
“But when you picture those great players, it’s normally in an international shirt that their biggest memories are formed.
“That is the case every time you pull on an England shirt. It is an opportunity that few get and these lads have earned it.
“I’m sure they are going to relish that. These sorts of landmarks are always opportunities.
“They have got an opportunity to go beyond where some incredible players and fantastic servants of England have gone before.
“And that is always an opportunity to be grasped.”

A win against Germany today would arguably be England’s biggest victory since 1966.
And boss Gareth Southgate says he has actively embraced the horrible history of English tournament failures to inspire his young team to potential glory.
Take a look through England’s victories in knockout matches since Sir Alf Ramsey’s men ruled the world 55 years ago and the list is relatively brief and unimpressive.
Paraguay, Belgium, Cameroon, Spain, Denmark, Ecuador, Colombia and Sweden — and the Belgians were not a significant force when Bobby Robson’s side defeated them at Italia 90.
World Cup quarter-final wins over Cameroon and the Swedes could be seen as more significant but to defeat a major footballing nation in a knockout match is something England have done only once since Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet trophy.
That win against Spain, on penalties in 1996, was England’s only ever knockout success at the Euros.

And Southgate admitted: “That’s an incredible record, really. It’s something we’ve talked about a lot as a team for the last four years.
“This team has that opportunity. In previous eras we have always talked about the past, teams and their records and baggage, and everything else.
“And there’s no reason for these boys to feel that way.
“Most weren’t born when a lot of those games happened. It’s an irrelevance for them, so I think we’re all looking forward to this game — a big opponent with excellent pedigree and great experience.”
Southgate is adamant he will not be giving a Churchillian speech today, especially as he is unsure whether his team know much about Sir Winston Churchill.
He said: “Churchill would be another figure that probably doesn’t figure highly on the players’ radar!
“You always have to give the right messages and give the players the right belief.

“But for myself, you always have to be authentic as a leader.
“It’s pointless trying to be something you’re not and put on an act, as players smell that a million miles off.
“The best managers I played for were themselves. They didn’t try to be someone they weren’t.”
When Germany were confirmed as England’s next opponents, after a chaotic finale to their ‘Group of Death’ last Wednesday, Southgate went back to his room and watched all three of their group games back-to-back.
Yet he insists he sleeps soundly before even the biggest matches. The England head coach said: “I sleep well the night before a game because the work is done.
“But in the days before that you want as much information as you can and your head is spinning with ideas so you can be awake at different hours.
“Sometimes I sleep, then wake up in the night, then I’ll go and watch something for an hour or two, go back and have another couple of hours’ sleep. That’s pretty normal for me.”

Southgate, as we are all tired of hearing, was part of all that bad history when he missed a spot-kick in the semi-final shootout defeat by the Germans at Euro 96.
Yet he claims even victory this evening would not make up for that nightmare — because he can never make it up to his team-mates from Terry Venables’ squad.
The former defender added: “I always want to win matches, give the country excitement, enjoyment and a warm feeling when they go to work the next morning.
“That’s the opportunity we’re blessed with. But I can’t give closure on what’s happened in the past because I can’t give closure to the team-mates I played with.
“OK, I’ve got an opportunity to do something now but the team-mates I’ve played with are the ones I think about the most for that fixture.
“So I can’t do that, that’s something I have to accept. I wouldn’t want to claim I can heal everything for everybody else.”

Spain were taken into extra-time by Croatia with six goals apiece, before they scored twice with the game ending 5-3.
For France, they were stunned on penalties against Switzerland, with Kylian Mbappe missing the deciding spot-kick.
But it was only Mario Gavranovic’s last-gasp leveller that took the game to extra-time.
Amazingly, the late goal earned one gambler £15,400 (€18,000) after a £1.70 (€2) flutter.

Betfair confirmed four punters backed the double on both of today’s matches incredibly finishing 3-3 in 90 minutes.
Spain are now well-placed among the bookies to win their first Euros since 2012, now guided by ex-Barcelona boss Luis Enrique.
Enrique said after the eight-goal thriller with Croatia: “It was a really intense game and I have experienced some similar ones, but it really had everything today.

“I think the strange thing is that we got a second chance and that doesn’t usually happen.
“What really struck me was the final five minutes of extra time, the fans stood up and started applauding and they were paying tribute to the great effort and commitment of all of the players who had competed and I think it was a lovely gesture from the fans.
“It’s about recognising the spectacle that both teams put on today.”

    THAT’S ALL FROM BUCHAREST!
Switzerland shocked the entire world by eliminating reigning world champions France from Euro 2020 on penalties following a mental game at the National Arena.
The Swiss opened the scoring on 15 minutes with Haris Seferovic’s header after Steven Zuber’s stunning cross from the left.
Vladimir Petkovic’s men almost doubled their lead after 55 minutes when they earned a penalty from Benjamin Pavard’s foul on Zuber at the edge of the area.
But Ricardo Rodriguez’s shot was saved by Hugo Lloris, who fell down his bottom right corner.
After a horrible first half, France turned things around in just two minutes with Karim Benzema.
Benzema equalised with a fine strike, following a brilliant touch, on 57 minutes and then turned things around with a header.
Paul Pogba appeared to have sealed qualification with a screamer in the 75th minute but Seferovic put his country back in the game six minutes later.
Mario Gavranovic then did the unthinkable in the 90th minute as he made it 3-3 with a beautiful shot from the edge of the box.
Nothing major happened on extra-time and so France and Switzerland became the first teams to go on penalties in this year’s Euros.

There’s the glory of 1966 but also the agony of 1990, 1996 and the desolation of 2010.
Then again, this is a generation of England players who seem determined not to be weighed down by the woes of previous teams.
When is England vs Germany and what time does it kick off?

England vs Germany takes place on Tuesday, June 29.
The Euro 2020 last-16 tie kicks off at 5pm in the UK.
The match will be held at Wembley Stadium.

What TV channel is England vs Germany on and can I live stream it?

The game is being broadcast on BBC One.
Coverage begins at 4pm and ends at 6.30pm with the Sweden vs Ukraine tie being shown straight afterwards.
You can live stream the match on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website.
The clash is also being streamed in 4k Ultra HD on iPlayer Beta.

    What is the team news?
Gareth Southgate has a near-full bill of health with his players.
Harry Maguire provides an extra defensive option after missing the first two games but playing 90 minutes against the Czechs.
Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount have to train on their own until Monday at midnight, so they are eligible for this clash.
But it remains to be seen whether Gareth Southgate will have the pair involved in the tie, with Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka impressing during the Czech Republic win.
Other than that, neither side have any major injury concerns.
