Anthony Joshua considering taking a knee before Oleksandr Usyk fight and hails England for leading the way at Euro 2020

ANTHONY JOSHUA is considering taking a knee before his next fight in the battle against racism. The 31-year-old WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight king has to defend his crowns against Oleksandr Usyk at Tottenham’s stadium on September 25.

And the British-Nigerian ace – who read an impassioned poem at a Black Lives Matter march through his Watford home in June 2020 – could use his status and platform to support the cause.
Before his December win over Kubrat Pulev, AJ explained he would not take the knee as he wanted to focus on making a more tangible change to British culture and showcasing the afro-Caribbean community.
But the last six months have led to the London 2012 Olympic icon reconsidering his approach.
Father-of-one Joshua told Gary Neville’s The Overlap: “For me it’s not a political stance.
“I’ve had to learn about what’s happened and what’s been going on more so last year and this year, than I ever have, to understand that this is just for a change for the better.
“It’s not political, it’s not about defunding anything or funding anything. The change wants to be made for the better.
“For the betterment of my kids, probably your kids, probably the person down the road’s kids, so harmony is created, because division is going to cause war.”
Asked by Neville if he would take a knee in the ring, Joshua said: “Yeah, 100 per cent I would. 100 per cent. I would take a knee anyway.”

Joshua enjoyed England’s Euro 2020 campaign and was proud of the players who continued taking a knee despite small sections of the crowd booing the move.
Gareth Southgate and his team made it ruthlessly clear why the entire England team carried on calling for societal change and AJ was impressed with the unified stance.
The 24-1 ace said: “I feel like the players and the teams have done a great job of explaining what the reasons are for taking a knee and as a fan, whether you’re there for that or not, you’re there to watch the team win.
“The importance of supporting your team-mates and your players – emotionally you’re with them through thick and thin. That’s loyalty.
“The reason that has been explained of them taking a knee is to bring awareness to an issue that’s been going on.
“Before phones were recording certain incidents, these things were happening.
‘I’M NOT FRIENDS WITH NO ONE’
“Certain people are aware, certain people have learnt more recently.
“But as I said, it’s nice that the explanation was made clear as to why a knee is being taken.”
Joshua showed less compassion for old enemy Tyson Fury who blew their undisputed summer decider when he lost an arbitration case with Deontay Wilder.
When the former Manchester United defender asked if Joshua respected his fellow fighter, Joshua said: “I don’t know.
“I don’t look at anyone in my industry like that. They are just people that I want to fight.
“I haven’t got time for any of them. I’m not friends with no one. They are all enemies at the end of the day.”

“I thank all the players for the hard work and the incredible, passionate supporters.”
Page has been in charge of Wales’ last 12 games.

He has now posted a picture of himself riding a jet ski and many of his England pals couldn’t resist poking fun in the comments.
Mount wrote: “The boy loves a jet ski”, while Harry Maguire teased: “Looking tanned mate”.
Rice will soon link up with his West Ham teammates who ramped up their preparations for the new season with a 6-2 win over Celtic on Saturday.
But the England international still has the last of the sun to soak up abroad as do the likes of Kyle Walker, Ben White, Ben Chilwell, and Kalvin Phillips who were recently out in Mykonos.
Walker’s performances were near-perfect during the Euros and he was seen letting off some steam by belting out Sweet Caroline as the group had lunch together.
Rice and Mount were seen leaping off a yacht with the West Ham man nearly bottling it after looking petrified.
The young stars won the heart of the nation this summer after helping the Three Lions reach their first major final in 55 years.
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been having fun after a superb tournament, with his family and friends throwing him a huge party.

Marcus Rashford mural destroyed by heavy rain after fans left messages of support to cover racist abuse

THOUSANDS of heartfelt messages left on the mural of England footballer Marcus Rashford have tonight been washed away by heavy rainfall. The tributes were due to be removed tomorrow so they could be preserved by some of the city’s galleries and museums.

But torrential downpours destroyed the tributes on the artwork on Moorfield Street, off Copson Street in the centre of Withington village.
It had symbolised a rejection of hate after it was defaced the morning after England’s defeat in the European Championship final.
The offensive graffiti on the side of the Coffee House Café on Copson Street was covered up.
People then came to leave notes with messages of support for Marcus and for his England teammates Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka.
They were racially abused online after missing penalties in England’s shootout defeat to Italy at Wembley.
Renowned street artist Akse resprayed and repainted it.
Soon after the number of messages continued to grow, with some people travelling several hundred miles to come to see it.
But amid high humidity, Greater Manchester was battered by thunderstorms this evening, causing flooding in some parts.

Daniel Martinez, who lives nearby, told the Manchester Evening News: “It’s a total shame because I live a 30-second walk from it.
“It’s had visitors every day since the Euros.”
The mural had been set to be preserved by Manchester Art Gallery, Central Library’s Archives Department, the People’s History Museum, the National Football Museum, the University of Manchester, and the Withington Walls project who first commissioned it.
“Racist abuse will never be tolerated, for club nor for country. If you see any form of abuse or discrimination, act and report it,” the club tweeted.

Louis van Gaal set to manage Holland for THIRD time as ex-Man Utd boss agrees deal ahead of World Cup 2022

LOUIS VAN GAAL looks set to embark on a third stint as Holland boss amid reports of him reaching an agreement on the role with the Dutch FA.The ex-Manchester United manager will be tasked with helping the side reach the 2022 World Cup following their disappointing last 16 exit from Euro 2020.
Former Man United boss Louis van Gaal is reportedly in line to become Netherlands bossCredit: PA:Press Association
The reports come weeks after Frank de Boer stepped down as Holland coach after his team crashed out of the Euros following a shock 2-0 loss to the Czech Republic.
Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf claims Van Gaal, 69, has met Holland’s football chiefs’ criteria for the role.
And it is thought Dutch FA’s director of football Nico-Jan Hoogma was looking to hire a national gaffer with the aura of Ronald Koeman.
Van Gaal, who is one of the world’s most successful club managers, has taken charge of Holland on two separate occasions from 2000-2002 and from 2012-2014.
The former Ajax chief, who turns 70 in August, led a memorable run to the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
It was a run that started with that Robin van Persie header against Spain, and ended with a 3-0 victory over the hosts that meant they finished third at the tournament.
But the Amsterdam-born gaffer endured a disappointing stint during his first spell in Holland’s hot seat.
His side, who were considered outside favourites to win the 2002 World Cup, failed to qualify for the contest after a shock loss to the Republic of Ireland.
It is thought Van Gaal will bring in three assistants to help him during his next spell in the dugout with the Netherlands set to face three tricky World Cup qualifiers in September.
De Telegraaf claims Frans Hoek, Henk Fraser and Danny Blind – the father of ex-United star Daley Blind – will take on the roles.
And the squad will play Norway, Montenegro and Turkey in their first group stage qualifying games in September before clashes with Latvia and Gibraltar in October.
Van Gaal’s return to international management will come as a surprise to some following his sacking from Manchester United in 2016 two days after leading the side to an FA Cup win.
He has not managed a team since that brutal dismissal.

However, the former Red Devils boss reportedly said he “would not say no” if the Dutch FA asked him to return as head coach.
Van Gaal, who began his managerial career with AZ Alkmaar in 1986, has won 20 major trophies with five European clubs.
Silverware wins include two LaLiga titles with Barcelona, one Bundesliga crown with Bayern and three Eredivisie championships with Ajax.

Ex-Arsenal star Mesut Ozil sends touching message of support to Bukayo Saka after England star’s Euro 2020 racism hell

MESUT OZIL shared kind-hearted words about Bukayo Saka following sickening online racial abuse aimed at the England starlet after his Euros 2020 penalty miss. The ex-Gunners playmaker revealed he “felt very much” for his former Arsenal team-mate and praised the youngster for taking a pen in a major match.

The 2014 World Cup winner, 32, was speaking almost two weeks after Saka saw his vital spot-kick saved by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The dramatic penalty shoot-out led to Roberto Mancini’s Azzurri winning the tournament.
Misses by Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho in addition to Saka would later lead to all three being targeted by trolls posting racist comments and monkey emojis on social media.
Saka, 19, who reflected on his experiences, has pledged to overcome negativity and called on social media companies to take action against online hate.
And his sentiments have been echoed by Ozil who plays for Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
I felt very much for Bukayo, I know from my own experience how it feels to miss a penaltyMesut Ozil
The ex-Germany playmaker also saw one of his spot-kicks saved by Donnarumma in Arsenal’s loss to Bayern Munich in a  2014 Champions League clash.
Ozil told Sky Sports: “I felt very much for Bukayo, I know from my own experience how it feels to miss a penalty.
“In a final, as the last one, to take on the responsibility of an entire nation as a young player – respect. Not many players would dare to do that.
“There will always be people who racially abuse and scapegoat people of different backgrounds and skin colour when they lose.
“Unfortunately, there will always be a small part of our community that racially insults and threatens players.
“We should focus much more on the positive messages that keep players strong.”
The abuse endured by Saka, Rashford and Sancho has led to leading football figures and politicians to demand action from Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
And the Arsenal ace’s club boss Mikel Arteta is among those who have called for tougher measures to stop players being targeted by accounts posting racist messages.
Arteta said: “He (Saka) has received a lot of love and support from the world of football, not only from Arsenal but with the national team and all the English fans because he doesn’t deserve anything like he has been through.
“He’s had a phenomenal season and in football, if you want to be part of the greatest you have to know at 19 that you will lose more than you win unfortunately in this game and there’s no exception to that rule.
Arsenal and England starlet Saka has vowed to overcome negativity following online abuse he receivedCredit: Getty

“Hopefully we can use this to make a strong statement and we have to stop racist abuse on social media and people using social media to hide and put people in really bad places.
“Hopefully, the laws will be stronger.
“We are all going to make a strong case out of that and it can make a big impact because I think it’s the moment to put it right.”

Met police confirmed that on Sunday a 24-year-old man was arrested in Liverpool on suspicion of robbery.
He has been bailed to return on a date in mid-August.
And cops have now released an appeal for information over the stolen watch — sharing more images of the timepiece in the hopes someone with information will step forward.
While it has not been confirmed which watch was stolen, Lando is often seen wearing Richard Mille timepieces, reports watchcollectinglifestyle.com.
One of them is reportedly the RM 67-02 Automatic Winding Extra Flat.
Met Police said a 21-year-old, believed to be Norris, had left the stadium and returned to his car which was parked in the yellow car park in nearby Rutherford Way.
In a statement, cops said: “He was approached by two men who engaged him in conversation.
“A short time later he was assaulted and held by one of the men while his watch was removed from his wrist.
“The victim was understandably shaken but did not sustain any lasting injuries.”
The suspects had already left by the time police arrived, the statement added.
Scotland Yard have appealed for witnesses, in particular one person who claimed to have captured the incident on their dashcam but left before giving police his details.
Detectives are “very keen” to speak to the person and obtain any footage.

A statement from Formula One last week said: “McLaren Racing can confirm that Lando Norris was involved in an incident, after the Euro 2020 final match at Wembley, during which the watch he was wearing was taken.
“Thankfully, Lando was unharmed but he is understandably shaken. The team is supporting Lando and we are sure that racing fans will join us in wishing him all the best for the British Grand Prix this weekend.
“As this is now a police matter we cannot comment further.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has been approached with a view to buying the watch should call the investigation team on 0777 667 3655 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
