Why isn’t Mesut Ozil playing for Germany against England at Euro 2020?

ENGLAND are playing Germany in Euro 2020 tonight, but a man who has previously played a key role in the Three Lions’ downfall will be absent.Mesut Ozil will play no part for the Germans against England, or indeed in the rest of Euro 2020.
Ozil won’t be appearing for the Germans as they go for glory at Euro 2020Credit: Reuters
Why is Mesut Ozil not playing for Germany?
The midfielder was instrumental in Joachim Low’s style of play and Die Mannschaft’s infamous 2014 World Cup glory – but was unable to help his side defend their title four years later in Russia.
Germany’s poor showing in the 2018 World Cup meant they were eliminated in the group stages and Ozil subsequently announced his retirement from international football, citing racism as the main reason behind his decision.
The 32-year-old, who has ancestral roots in Turkey, was heavily criticized by the press for meeting up and posing for a photograph with the country’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogen, despite the World Cup winner denying any wrongdoing.
Erdogan was also the best man at the player’s wedding in Turkey.

Ozil is now plying his trade in Turkey with FenerbacheCredit: Reuters
Ozil was also frozen out in his final years at Arsenal before moving to Fenerbahce in January 2021, so it is questionable whether his club form would have earned him a spot in the Germany side if he did choose to play.
Ozil was the highest-paid player at Arsenal on a reported £350,000 a week.

During Ozil’s singing ceremony with Fenerbahce, the experienced playmaker said: “If I go on a road, I will never come back.
“So I will not play in the German National Team anymore.
“I wish them success, but I will never play for them again”.
Ozil also ruled out the possibility of returning to play his club football in Germany before he hangs up his boots insisting that he has no plans for a Bundesliga homecoming in the future.
Asked if he has dreamt of going back to the German top-flight at some point, Ozil replied curtly: “No, I haven’t.”

Back in September 2020, DFB general secretary Friedrich Curtis admitted the German football organisation made mistakes with the way they handled Ozil and missed out on their chance to rectify the situation with the player
Curtis said: “The DFB made mistakes in dealing with the events surrounding the Ozil case.
“A photo became a burning glass for many topics. The moment there were racist allegations, we missed the time to meet with the player.”
Germany’s ‘Group of Death’ will see them take on reigning World Cup champions France on June 15, before Euro holders Portugal four days later and Hungary on June 23. More

Germany’s ‘secret’ list of penalty takers for England clash as German media taunt ‘we can hardly lose’ in shootout

GERMANY have a secret list of penalty takers if needed against England tonight and ‘can hardly lose’, German media claim.Bild have released a list of who will take the penalties if tonight’s Euro 2020 crunch clash goes all the way.
Toni Kroos and Joshua Kimmich are on Germany’s secret list of penalty takers reported by BildCredit: Getty
And the German publication taunted that Joachim Low’s side ‘can hardly lose’ if a shoot-out is needed to settle the last-16 showdown.
Germany have a strong record in penalty shootouts having lost just one of seven in major tournaments.
The report in Bild says ‘penalty shootouts are our speciality’ and Low’s side have been practising since Saturday.
And the five players named as German penalty takers are – Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Kai Havertz.
A back-up list in case any of those players are not on the pitch is made up of Ilkay Gundogan, Marcel Halstenberg and Matthias Ginter.
The report also poked fun at England’s poor penalty record having lost six of their eight shoot-outs since 1990 – ‘against us, among others’.
England have an infamously poor penalty shoot-out record against the Germans, losing in the semi-finals of both Italia 90 and Euro 96 – with now-boss Gareth Southgate missing his effort in the latter.

Many of the youthful Three Lions squad weren’t alive for the Euro 96 heartbreak on home soil, while only Kyle Walker and Jordan Henderson were born before Italia 90, both by a matter of weeks.
But England have still lost many a shootout in recent years including major tournament exits in 1998, 2004, 2006 and 2012.
However, Southgate boasts a wealth of spot-taking talent in his squad should Tuesday’s clash go the distance and will hope to add to their 2018 World Cup last-16 shootout win over Colombia.
Two players – Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin – both boast 100 per cent record for their career for club and country.
Sancho has taken and scored four, including one for England – while Calvert-Lewin has two in two, with one of those for his country.
It suggests those two should be on the pitch if the match nears the end of extra-time – however, Southgate has so far been reluctant to use them, giving the England boss a dilemma.
Three more players all boast strong success rates of 80 per cent of higher.

Captain Harry Kane has scored 45 of his 51 attempts (88 per cent), including a staggering 11 for England.
Marcus Rashford has only missed two of his 16 spot-kicks (87 per cent), while netting four for his country. His injury time penalty for Manchester United against PSG in 2019 suggests he has the stomach for a high-pressure pen.
Mason Mount has scored four of his five penalties (80 per cent) – all for his clubs down the years, including one for Derby in their shock Carabao Cup win over Manchester United in 2018-19.
Kalvin Phillips has only skewed one of his three efforts (67 per cent) but is yet to take one for his country.

Despite Kalvin Phillips starting all three games so far, Jordan Henderson came within a few hundred votes of earning your call on Tuesday night.

Jude Bellingham was not far behind as faith in Leeds ace Phillips waned despite his strong display in the opener versus Croatia.
The midfield creator’s spot could be sacrificed if Gareth Southgate opts for a five-man defence, to match up against Joachim Low’s side.
When asked who should start out of Jack Grealish and Mason Mount, SunSport readers backed the Aston Villa playmaker three to one.
On the right wing, you preferred Bukayo Saka ahead of Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho.

Gareth Southgate faces a decision between Mason Mount and Jack Grealish

The Arsenal winger took half of the votes in this position, with his team-mates evenly splitting the remaining ballots.
And with Harry Kane strongly backed over Marcus Rashford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in attack, it meant the same starting XI that faced Czech Republic has been backed again by the England faithful.
Southgate will reveal his hand just before 4pm with late calls likely to be made on Mount and Chilwell following their coronavirus self-isolation.

Which Euro 2020 teams are taking the knee and will Germany kneel against England?

EURO 2020 is here and one new feature of the competition is the differing stance teams are taking against racism.England have become embroiled in a big row with the players condemning fans who booed them taking the knee in the warm-up games against Austria and Romania.
England will continue taking the knee throughout Euro 2020Credit: PA
And manager Gareth Southgate said the players are even more determined to take the knee following the booing.
Here are the gestures each of the 24 teams will be making during the tournament.
Which teams are taking the knee at Euro 2020?
    England
England will continue to take the knee during Euro 2020, as they have been since the murder of George Floyd last year.
The team have stated that they believe the gesture is not a political one and designed simply to show support for racial equality.
Gareth Southgate said: “I think we have got a situation where some people seem to think it is a political stand that they don’t agree with.
“That is not the reason the players are doing it. We are supporting each other.”
    Wales
Wales and France take the knee in a pre-Euro 2020 friendlyCredit: Reuters
Wales have taken the knee over the past year and continued to do so throughout Euro 2020.
Interim manager Rob Page said: “We had a meeting and we all think it’s still important to take the knee.
“That’s the message we’ve given out. We’re all in it together and there were no issues.”
    Belgium
Belgium are the only non-British team to announce they will take the knee throughout Euro 2020.
Romelu Lukaku said of any negative reactions: “I don’t care. I fight for diversity.
“Not only for the black community, also for the women. Colour, sexuality, faith, it doesn’t matter. Everybody should be respected.”
Which teams have not taken the knee at Euro 2020?
    Hungary

The Hungarian FA were the first association to confirm they would not take the knee at Euro 2020.
In a statement they said they view the knee as a political gesture in defiance of Uefa and Fifa rules.
It read: “The basic values of the sport are equal opportunities, respect for the teammate and the opponent.
“Football may have become the most popular sport in the world because it belongs to everyone.
“The Hungarian national team not only follows the international rules and norms in all cases, but also pays tribute to everyone – be it an opponent, a fan or anyone else.
“MLSZ has been fighting all forms of hatred for years as part of the ‘Hate is not a track’ campaign.
“The rules of UEFA and FIFA do not allow politicization on the pitch and in the stadium either, which the MLSZ not only accepts but also agrees with.
“The national team will not express its condemnation of any form of hatred by kneeling before the matches.”
During their warm-up game against Ireland, Hungary pointed to the Uefa Respect logo on the sleeves of their shirts while the Irish team took the knee and were booed by a sizeable portion of the 15,000 crowd.
The gesture is thought to be hugely unpopular with a core group of Hungarian supporters, who marched to the Puskas Arena before Hungary’s game against France with an anti-kneeling banner.

    Croatia
England’s first opponents at Euro 2020 did not take the knee but instead pointed to the Uefa Respect badge on their shirts.
An official statement read: “CFF and the players are against any form of discrimination.
“But the FA provides the players with the right to choose, as the act itself isn’t a part of Croatian culture and heritage.
“The players chose not to kneel down before the Belgium [friendly] game, but they’ve taken a respectful stance towards the gesture made by their Belgium colleagues.”
    Denmark
Denmark did not take the knee in their Euro 2020 opener against Finland or their third game against Russia.
They also chose to remain standing during their games against Belgium and Wales, when the opposition took the knee.
However, the Danish players did applaud both teams for performing the gesture.
    Russia
Russia did not take the knee in any of their Euro 2020 games.
The crowd in St Petersburg were also heard booing the Belgian team, who chose to kneel against the Russians and Finland, when they played in the city.
    Holland
The Netherlands will not take the knee in any of their games, captain Georginio Wijnaldum has said.
Wijnaldum, who has been taking the knee with Liverpool in Premier League games, commented: “We have talked about that but we decided not to do this.
“We’re trying to bring attention to the issue in a different way. Actually, only the players who play in England are used to this [kneeling].”
However, Holland will take a political stance in favour of LGBT rights when they face Czech Republic in the Hungarian capital Budapest.
Hungary’s government has proposed a controversial constitutional amendment banning promotion of homosexuality to minors.
And then the Dutch play in the country, they will take to the pitch in rainbow armbands – the traditional symbol of support to the LGBT community.
In World Cup qualifiers, the Dutch have also worn t-shirts supporting improved conditions for migrant workers in 2022 World Cup host Qatar.
    Austria
Despite taking the knee in a warm-up game against England, Austria have not taken the knee in any of their Euro 2020 games.
In his press conference before the last 16 game against Italy, captain David Alaba said the Austria team is in favour of kneeling and will do so if asked.
However, neither team requested to take the knee or performed the gesture when the Austrians faced Italy at Wembley.
    North Macedonia
North Macedonia did not take the knee in any of their Euro 2020 games.
    Ukraine
Ukraine have not taken the knee in any of their Euro 2020 games.
    Czech Republic
Czech Republic refused to take the knee in their World Cup qualifier against Wales in March and have not done so at Euro 2020.
The Czechs decided to point to the Uefa Respect logo in their sleeves on that occasion as a “neutral, apolitical gesture”.
The Czechs are have also been angered by the ten-game suspension Uefa handed down to defender Ondrej Kudela after he was found to have racially abused Rangers’ Glen Kamara.
    Spain
While some La Liga players have shown solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, the Spain team have never taken the knee and their clubs also tend not to.
Real Madrid did not take the knee against Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester City while Villarreal chose not to kneel against Man Utd in the Europa League final.
When Granada played Man Utd, only Brazilian winger Kenedy took the knee.
Spain have not taken the knee in any of their Euro 2020 games so far.
    Sweden
Sweden have not taken the knee at any of their Euro 2020 games so far.
It is not known whether they will kneel if the opposition choose to do so.
    Poland

Poland did not take the knee in any of their Euro 2020 games.
The gesture has been criticised by both the Polish FA president and sections of their support.
The Poles refused to kneel against England and instead pointed to the Uefa Respect logo on their sleeves.
Polish FA President Zbigniew Boniek labelled the gesture “populism” that “achieved nothing” and said: “I am absolutely against such actions.
“Footballers sometimes kneel, and if you asked some of them why they were kneeling, they wouldn’t even know.”
    Slovakia
Slovakia did not take the knee in any of their Euro 2020 games.
The Slovaks took the knee against Ireland and Scotland last October but were criticised in the Slovakian parliament.
After this, the country’s FA said the players had only taken the knee because they believed Uefa had instructed them to do so and would no longer perform the gesture.

    France
France took the knee in their first warm-up friendly against Wales but not in their second one against Bulgaria.
The French team were expected to kneel throughout Euro 2020 but changed their mind at the last minute.
Les Bleus were criticised in some sections of the French media after kneeling against the Welsh.
And captain Hugo Lloris said after the opening game against Germany: “It was a collective decision.
“We assume that if we have to do it, all the nations must do it with the support of UEFA.
“This is the case in Premier League, where the movement is united. In this competition, it is less the case.
“This does not mean that we do not support the cause, we especially do not want racism in our sport and in society.”
Another France player said anonymously: “The truth is that players were concerned about the fierce reaction to the gesture, and felt that it was dividing more than uniting.”
It is not known whether France will take the knee if the opposition does.
    Germany
Bundesliga players took the knee after the murder of George Floyd last season but the national team have not been kneeling in 2021.
However, captain Manuel Neuer has suggested they could do so when they play England.
He told Kicker: “Basically, we think that’s very good from the English national team and from the teams that also do it in the Premier League.
“We haven’t seen it in this form from the Bundesliga or our international matches. We talk about it in the team.”
Despite Germany choosing not to kneel so far, politics and football resolutely DO mix in the country.
Like Holland, the German team has been active in demonstrating for better conditions for migrant workers in Qatar.
And during Germany’s match with Hungary, the Mayor of Munich saw his request to light the Allianz Arena in rainbow colours rejected by Uefa on grounds of potential politicisation of football.
However, thousands of Germany fans responded by attending the game wearing rainbow flags while captain Manuel Neuer wore a rainbow armband.
And midfielder Leon Goretzka celebrated by making a heart gesture in front of the Hungarian fans after equalising in the 2-2 draw.
Which teams are taking the knee in some Euro 2020 games?

Scotland have made their decision ahead of their opener against Czech Republic
Scotland stars originally said they would NOT be taking a knee prior to their Euro 2020 matches.
The Scottish FA confirmed they will continue to promote an anti-racist message by standing before matches.
But just a day later, they decided to do so in their match against England only.
Scotland skipper Andy Robertson said: “It is important we continue to tackle the issue of racism and raise awareness of the need to change people’s mindsets but also their behaviours.
“Prior to our World Cup qualifiers in March we spoke as a group and felt that taking a stand was the best way for us to show solidarity and also to reinforce the need for meaningful change in society.”
As per their announcement, Scotland did not kneel against the Czech Republic and Croatia at Hampden but did against England at Wembley.

    Italy
Italy were not thought to be taking the knee in any of their Euro 2020 games.
In their opening two matches against Switzerland and Turkey, neither team performed the gesture.
And when Wales took the knee in Rome, the Italians initially kicked off the match as normal.
However once the referee called them back, five players did take the knee – Rafael Toloi, Federico Bernardeschi, Emerson Palmieri, Andrea Bellotti and Matteo Pessina.
Following that confusion, vice-captain Leonardo Bonucci said Italy would in future take the knee if the opposition choose to do so.
He commented: “If in fact the opponents were to choose to kneel in that case the team would do the same, kneel, out of respect for the sensitivity of the opponents.
“This is where the group chose a line.
“After all, it could happen very soon: if all goes well, already in the quarterfinals he could meet Lukaku’s Belgium, which has made its own flag with messages against racism.
“Belgium would kneel and Italy would follow them. Without taking a position of its own, but sharing that of whoever they will face.”
    Turkey
Turkey did not take the knee in their opening match against Italy or their third game against Switzerland but did in their second game against Wales.
    Switzerland
Switzerland did take the knee in their opening Euro 2020 game against Wales but did not in their second game against Italy or their third game against Turkey.
    Finland
Finland did not take the knee in their first two Euro 2020 games against Denmark and Russia, but did in their third game against Belgium.
    Portugal
Portugal did not take the knee in any of their group games.
However, Cristiano Ronaldo led the team in performing the gesture before their last 16 defeat to Belgium. More

Fans joke Cristiano Ronaldo’s Coca-Cola snub was his undoing as Xhaka ‘drinks it like Sunday league player’ in Euro win

FANS jokes Cristiano Ronaldo’s Coco-Cola snub was his undoing as Granit Xhaka necked the famous drink before Switzerland’s penalty shootout with France. The Portugal captain made headlines when he moves the Coke bottles away during a press conference.

Instead, the 36-year-old said: “Drink water,” with the stunt knocking a whopping £2.84billion off the company’s market value.
But Switzerland star Xhaka, 28, got the boost needed as he ‘drunk it like a Sunday league player’.
The skipper and man of the match – linked with a transfer from Arsenal to Roma this summer – was spotted downing a plastic bottle of the classic full-sugar version of the soft drink on the pitch in Bucharest.
And although he did not step up to take a spot-kick, the results worked out well for the blonde-haired midfielder as Switzerland won 5-4 on penalties.
After a dramatic 3-3 draw and nine converted efforts, Kylian Mbappe failed to beat Yann Sommer and the favourites crashed out – just 24 hours after Ronaldo and Portugal were also knocked out.
So Twitter users were quick to compare their respective fortunes with their attitude towards Coca-Cola.
One said: “Xhaka strolls off after 120 minutes and grabs a Coke. See Ronaldo. Really elite players love the stuff.”
Another wrote: “Only if Cristiano Ronaldo had drank Coke, he would still be in the Euros. Look at Xhaka gulping very chilled Coke.”

A third added: “You’re telling me Xhaka played 120 minutes, and then proceeded to crush a Coke while motivating his teammates to bury France in PKs?!? What a legend.”
A fourth replied: “Ronaldo drinks water, xhaka drinks coke, only one of them is in the quarters!”
And Paddy Power commented: “Great to see Xhaka horsing the bottle of Coke into him like a hungover Sunday League player.”
Ronaldo’s move led to other players joining in getting rid of the Coke at press conferences.
Italy hero Manuel Locatelli followed in Ronaldo’s footsteps on and off the pitch – with two goals and then getting rid of the Coke with water put in its place.
Cristiano Ronaldo famously moved the bottles out of the way and told people to ‘drink water’

Paul Pogba, a devout Muslim, also removed a bottle of Heineken 0.0 – the non-alcoholic version of their beer.
But Roberto Martinez, whose Belgium side are directly sponsored by Coca-Cola and are into the quarters, insisted his team ‘love’ the soft drink after their win over Denmark.
Scottish hero John McGinn turned the saga into a bit of a joke when he came in to do pre-match press and cheekily asked why there was ‘no Coke?’
Clearly not one to blindly follow trends, Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov merrily drank the Coca-Cola supplied for his media duties.
Andriy Yarmolenko poked further fun by asking Coca-Cola and Heineken for sponsorship deals while England captain Harry Kane simply avoided the entire fiasco by ignoring the bottles.
Uefa, aware of the negative impact the stunts have on big-money backers,  then stepped in to tell players to stop moving sponsors’ drinks or risk getting their team fined.

Team news, injury updates and latest odds for Sweden vs Ukraine as Schevchenko aims to stun Euro rivals in last-16 duel

ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO hopes unfancied Ukraine can repeat the Euros feat he achieved as a player against Sweden nine years ago. In 2012 the then Dynamo Kyiv striker inspired his side to come back from 1-0 down to beat the Scandinavians 2-1 in a thrilling group stage clash.

Shevchenko’s aces – currently the 24th best team in the world – have lost seven of their last eight games played at the tournament.
Tonight they will face a defensively tough Sweden side – who finished top of their group conceding only twice in their three opening Euros matches.
The clash will kick-off at 8pm tonight at the Hampden Park home of Scotland with a quarter-final duel with England or Germany at stake.
And the game is available to watch from 8pm onwards on BBC1 and BBC iPlayer.
    What’s the form?
Janne Andersson’s players have lost just two of their past 10 international games
Those losses were 3-0 and 4-2 Nations League defeats to Portugal and France in October and November 2020.
And this evening’s clash will be only the third time Sweden have reached the knockout stages of the Euros with the Netherlands dispatching them at the quarter-finals of the 2004 edition.

Meanwhile, a win against North Macedonia for Ukraine was enough to see the Blue and Yellows reach the last-16 after finishing third in their group behind the Netherlands and Austria.
And Shevchenko’s men will hope for an improved defensive display against the Swedes with the team having conceded five goals in their group stage matches.
However Andersson says Sweden will not be taking their opponents lightly, particularly in terms of their transition play.
He said: “They are a good team; they know how to switch from defence to attack.
“They looked worn out against Austria, but like us they’ve had some rest – even more actually.”

    Who’s in and who’s out

Juventus winger Dejan Kulusevski will be targeting a place in Sweden’s starting 11 after registering notching up two assists during his substitute appearance against Poland.
Forward Emil Fosberg is reported to be fit and available after missing training on Saturday.
And Marcus Berg could be set to make his return to Sweden’s front line alongside Real Sociedad starlet Alexander Isak, with Robin Quaison likely to return to the bench.
Meanwhile, Viktor Tsyhankov and Oleksandr Zubkov are both reportedly struggling with calf issues which could leave Ukraine depleted on the left side of their attack.
Shevchenko said: “We have travelled a long way to be here. We have achieved the result we wanted and have nothing to lose now.
“Everything else will be a big bonus for us. I think we played a good group stage.
“We played well against the Dutch and we put in a good performance against North Macedonia. Austria were very strong opponents.
“But Sweden are well prepared tactically and have good individual players.”

    Watch out for…….
Alexander Isak. The rising LaLiga starlet, whose parents hail from East African nation Eritrea, has been making waves in Sweden’s attack.
And the 6ft 4in forward’s performances have reportedly seen him emerge as a £60million Arsenal target.
His tournament highlights included setting up a quality chance for Marcus Berg to net against Spain only for the forward to somehow miss the sitter.
Isak, 21, has enjoyed a fine season up top for Real Sociedad netting 17 goals in 34 LaLiga appearances for the club.
