Best and worst dressed coaches of Euro 2020, from Mancini wearing Giorgio Armani to Enrique’s cargo pants and more

IT’S not just the players that are style icons.Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of managers getting it right on the touchline by ditching tracksuits and sportswear for smart casual.
Managers like Robert Mancini have cut a stylish figure on the touchline during Euro 2020Credit: Reuters
And the Euros have provided us with plenty of different looks – from designer suits to trainer and cargo pant combos.
But which coach is the best dressed at Euro 2020?
    GARETH SOUTHGATE
At the 2018 World Cup, the England boss sported an M&S waistcoat that flew off the shelves.
However, in the run-up to the Euros he’s had a suit and polo shirt combo that’s divided some.
Against Scotland, Southgate acclimatised to the rainy weather by wearing a rain mac.
But it was against Croatia he looked most dapper – wearing a £680 Percival suit and polka dot tie for our opener.

    LUIS ENRIQUE
Marathon runner Luis Enrique looks great in anything – due to a svelte figure maintained by his insane fitness regime.
And the Spain boss has gone with a smart-but-comfortable look while barking instructions from the touchline.
The ex-Barcelona boss favours a cargo pant with a shirt tucked in. For footwear, it’s Adidas trainers all the way.
While against Croatia in the last-16 tie, he swapped the cargo pants for jeans.

    DIDIER DESCHAMPS
For ex-Chelsea midfielder Deschamps, blue is definitely the colour.
The France manager prefers to wear an Oxford blue shirt underneath a cobalt blue suit.
Although it’s loyal to his team’s colours, we have to say as well cut as the suit is it’s just a little dull.

    JOACHIM LOW
German boss Low has sported a couple of different looks at the Euros.
Against France, the grey drawstring trousers and navy t-shirt showed he’s not afraid to be contemporary in his style. And kudos for wearing Stan Smith’s too.
What will have in store when Germany face England?

    STEFAN TARKOVIC
Slovakia crashed out of the Euros in spectacular fashion with a 5-0 thrashing to Spain.
Perhaps, the players couldn’t take boss Stefan Tarkovic’s tie, waistcoat and £45 Pepe Jeans trainers.
Oh, he wore jeans too. Doesn’t work, does it?

    ROBERTO MANCINI
If there’s any manager that screams class, it’s Italy’s Roberto Mancini.
The health conscious non-drinker, 56, cuts a dashing figure on the sidelines as he orchestrates his team from the dugout.

And he wears THAT Giorgio Armani suit so well – it makes you forget the haters who originally compared it to a chef’s jacket.
Scott Parker most certainly would be proud.

England Euro 2020 football team’s bizarre superstitions and rituals from Kane’s shaving to Walker’s rotten shin pads

MONTHS of intense training, international friendlies, and endless analysis have gone into making England as strong as they can be for the Euros. But some players leave nothing to chance and turn to bizarre pre-game rituals and superstitions they believe will give them an extra edge – which could come in handy in tonight’s clash against Germany.
⚽️ Read our Euro 2020 Live Blog for the latest news and updates
England boss Gareth Southgate has done all he can to lead the Three Lions to Euro 2020 successCredit: Reuters
There’s a particularly rich history of wacky habits in England dressing rooms over the years.
John Terry reckoned he had about 50 superstitious rituals, including always sitting in the same seat on the team coach and repeatedly listening to the same Usher album.
Phil Jones decided which sock to put on first depending on whether he was playing at home or away.

And Gary Lineker is believed to have changed his shirt at halftime if he hadn’t scored in the first 45 minutes of the game.
Now the latest Three Lions squad will be doing their own pre-match rituals ahead of tonight’s match.
    Razor precision
Alexander the Great once ordered his army to shave before a showdown for the control of Asia, believing “in battles, there is nothing handier to grasp than a beard”.
But when England skipper Harry Kane goes to war on the pitch, he takes a different view.
The striker, 27, has previously attributed a goal streak at Spurs to ditching his razor.
Harry Kane has previously avoided shaving to continue a hot streak of scoringCredit: Getty
In 2014, after scoring in three consecutive games, he said: “I have not had a shave since my first goal.
“It is the first time I have gone for the bearded look and the missus might not be too happy if I score the next couple of weeks but it is a superstition I am keeping.”
Let’s hope that by the time the Euro final comes round that he looks like Gandalf.
    Smells like team spirit
Kyle Walker will do anything to avoid a rotten performance – including wearing rotting shin pads.
The £150,000-a-week defender, 31, wears the same pair he’s had for 14 years since his fledgling days at Sheffield United.
“They’re hanging together a bit, but they are doing OK and I will not change them. I will never change them,” Walker recently told The Telegraph.
Kyle Walker has worn the same shin pads for well over a decadeCredit: Getty
“I’ve never lost them or anything, they have to be there. It’s impossible not to have them. I’d rather lose my boots.”
Walker also eats spaghetti bolognese every night before a game.
But spare a thought for the poor England kit man having to schlep those smelly old shin pads from game to game this summer.
    Making a point
For striker Marcus Rashford, his tribute is to a beloved family member.
The school meals hero always points to the sky remembering his grandmother Cillian who imparted valuable wisdom to him when he was a young boy.

In his book You Are a Champion, 23-year-old Rashford wrote about the pain of losing his nanna when he was just 11.
He wrote: “Next time you see me playing football, check out what I do before I get on the pitch: I always do the sign of the cross, and then I point up to my nanna.
“She never got to watch me play, but I know she’s a part of me and I always try to say something to her before a game.

“I remember the lessons she taught me, tap my boots four times before I step on the pitch – which is my little routine I do to keep focused – and then I know I’m ready to go out there and give it my best.
“That’s my way of trying to share what big moments I can with her, even though she is gone.”
    Sock it to ’em
Luke Shaw’s superstition manages to blend the football-wide phenomenon of wearing “lucky” clothes with a tribute to his son.
The Manchester United left-back, 25, was gifted a pair of socks adorned with his baby’s face by his girlfriend, Anouska Santos.

Now he believes his customised footwear bearing the image of little Reign London brings him good fortune.
Shaw recently told Sky: “I always make sure I have them on.
“They are kind of like my lucky socks.”
    Head in the game
Tyrone Mings’ knows football is a game of the mind as much as the body.
That’s why the Aston Villa defender, 28, speaks to his psychologist for a few minutes before every game to put himself into a hyper-competitive state.
He told the High Performance podcast: “We talk about settling down the inner child and any feelings he might have in what I’m about to do.
Tyrone Mings chats with a psychologist before kick-off to get into a competitive mental stateCredit: The Sun
“We talk about settling down the inner child and any feelings he might have in what I’m about to do.
“Then we talk to the best version of myself and what he looks like, how he’s stood, how he feels, how he competes.
“Then we distinguish which one we need right now and then going out and playing.”
    On a roll
You might think Grealish needs to pull his socks up – but he likes them low for a reason.
The Three Lions playmaker, 25, usually has them rolled down so far that his shin pads are visible.
Grealish told Birmingham Live: “Obviously your socks are supposed to go above your calves.
Jack Grealish is said to wear shin pads for teenagers and keeps his socks low for superstitious reasonsCredit: Reuters
“But one year when I was here, the socks once shrunk in the wash. So they wouldn’t go higher.
“That season, I ended up playing really well. So it became a superstitious thing for me. I thought ‘I’m going to keep doing this because I’ve done well’.”
The Villa ace is even said to wear shin pads designed for teenagers.
He says some referees have taken issue with his sartorial superstitions, but he insists he has no plans to change.
    Football crazy, chocolate mad
Extremely strict dietary control is a huge part of the modern game for elite players.
But the Toffees’ blistering striker Dominc Calvert-Lewin swears by pre-match chocolate.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin is thought to munch on Maltesers before playingCredit: Rex

According to the Daily Mail, the 24-year-old forward always scoffs down a bag of Maltesers before kick-off.
It’s unclear how the quirky superstition started – but with 16 Premier League goals last season, we hope he’s packed his suitcase with the sweet snack for the Euros.

Cheeky schoolkids BOO Germany team as they arrive at London hotel for England Euro 2020 showdown

CHEEKY schoolkids booed the Germany team as they arrived at their London hotel.Joachim Low and his side landed in the capital on Monday ahead of this evening’s Euro 2020 showdown at Wembley.
The Germany team were heckled on their way into the team hotel on Monday
Schoolkids chanted and booed in their direction through the doors
The players can expect a similarly hostile reception at Wembley later
But there were given a frosty reception from a bunch of children as they went to check in, with the kids also chanting ‘who are ya’ at the 2014 world champions.
However, the Germans did not appear too unnerved by the youngsters – and can expect plenty more of the same under the Arch later with 45,000 in the stands at the home of football.
Die Mannschaft were due to arrive from Nuremberg Airport and then train on the Wembley pitch.
But the heavy rain in London meant Uefa blocked their session to protect the turf.
Instead, Germany made their final preparations at their Herzogenaurach base back home yesterday morning before the flight.
German newspaper Bild described the disruption as a ‘scandal’.
To make matters worse, Low faces the prospect of being without three key players as a bug swept through the camp for what could be his last game in charge of the national team.
Ilkay Gundogan, Antonio Rudiger and Robin Gosens all face races against time to be fit for the game – and the manager will not know until late on Tuesday about their availability.

England and Germany will play out the latest instalment of their old rivalry from 5pm today.

Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell look set to be in contention after serving their self-isolation period.
Bukayo Saka is expected to retain his starting spot while Gareth Southgate could go with a back three.
The Three Lions boss has called on his troops to secure their status as legends.

“That’s the beauty of playing for your country.
“If you think of all the big players in history, there are significant memories in club football, European football.
“But when you picture those great players, it’s normally in an international shirt that their biggest memories are formed.

The pre-tournament favourites saw their campaign end in Bucharest on Monday night.
And their superstar players looked crestfallen as they made their exit from the tournament.
Kylian Mbappe, who missed the decisive spot kick in the penalty shootout, looked downbeat as he boarded the team’s coach.
Manager Didier Deschamps also cut a solemn figure as he hopped on the team bus with his luggage.
Captain Hugo Lloris was also seen looking sheepish after his team’s shock exit.
France looked to have got away with a poor first half as two from Karim Benzema and a Paul Pogba wonder-strike got them out of an early deficit.
But late strikes from Haris Seferovic and Mario Gavranovic forced extra-time in a stunning twist.
And the Swiss side went on to win and set up a quarter-final against Spain on Friday night.
PSG striker Mbappe, 22, missed the decisive spot kick as French hopes were dashed.

“It’s going to be hard to sleep after this, but unfortunately these are the ups and downs of this sport that I love so much.
“The most important (thing) will be to get back up again even stronger for future commitments. Congratulations and good luck to the Swiss team.”

It was France’s first penalty shoot out since losing the 2006 World Cup final to Italy, and Spurs keeper Lloris said: “At 3-1 we should have been able to close this match out.
“Tonight hurts a lot but we win together and we lose together. We are all responsible for being eliminated at this stage of the competition.
“There is no-one pointing fingers. We had to deal with injuries, but we have no right to make excuses. This is a competition.
“We gave everything, we left it all out on the pitch. Penalties are a lottery. We did not have the luck. We will now need to manage the pain.”

And he revealed that he was in talks with the two Premier League giants over club managerial roles.
Speaking to Ladbrokes, Sven said: “During my time as England manager, I had contact with Manchester United and then Chelsea.
“But it’s almost impossible to leave your contract early as the England national manager to then go on and take over an English club. If you leave England, people will not look very good at you.
“There were discussions with those two clubs, but they never led to anything, and I’m proud to have stuck to my decision to stay in charge of the national team.”
Sven delivered a special message for football-mad Sun readers: England WILL beat Germany.
The Swede reckons Gareth Southgate’s side can finally end their knockout hoodoo on Tuesday evening against the Germans.
Eriksson, 73, guided the Three Lions to a famous 5-1 victory in Munich almost 20 years as well as three successive tournament quarter-finals..

Chelsea ‘professor’ Jorginho deserves to win Ballon d’Or, insists Italy star Lorenzo Insigne

Jorginho’s been the driving force in getting the Italians to the quarter-finals of the competition, which has led to Insigne calling him ‘The Professor’.
The 30-year-old’s views echo those of ex-Blues star Cesc Fabregras who revealed Jorginho’s intelligence was one of the reasons he left the club.
When asked if the Blues midfielder should lift the prestigious French prize, Insigne said: “We have quality players. You talked about Jorginho and it’s correct.
“He had spent some fantastic years at Chelsea and I am proud to have him in our team.
“I’m not the one deciding if he deserves the Ballon d’Or, but I hope he’ll be shortlisted, he deserves so, he is a great player.
“I call him the professor and we are all happy to play with him.”
And Jorginho has the stats to back up Insigne’s claims.

During those 375 minutes played he’s had 94 per cent passing accuracy and recovered the ball 23 times.
Earlier this year the ex-Napoli ace was also ranked the third best-player in Europe and the highest in the Premier League.
It’s a far cry from when he could barely get a lookin at Stamford Bridge under ex-boss Frank Lampard.

England and Germany Euro 2020 stars as kids, including an adorable Neuer, goofy Hummels, Arsenal-loving Kane and more

TONIGHT, England and Germany’s stars will do battle in what promises to be an epic last-16 tie at the Euros. But before they were men, they were just boys dreaming of football stardom.
Before they were men, kids like Raheem Sterling dreamed of playing in a England v Germany game
From giant goalie Manuel Neuer to legendary defender Mats Hummels, they all were kids once hoping to make a splash at a major tournament.
And our Three Lions heroes were no different either! Here’s what England and Germany stars looked like when they children.
    MANUEL NEUER
With a confident swagger and a touch of arrogance, Neuer is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
    But as a kid, butter wouldn’t melt…

    THOMAS MUELLER
German goal threat Mueller was a boyhood Bayern Munich fan, judging by this photo.
But the fact the forward is also wearing goalkeeper gloves suggests he might not have discovered his best position upfront until late.
Still, he was student of the game even then reading up all the stories in a footy manual.

    JACK GREALISH
England’s poster-boy for this year’s Euros, Grealish grew up in Birmingham.
And he’s always been as a cute as a button, wearing his boyhood Aston Villa shirt with pride as a five-year-old.
However, his hair wasn’t the flowing locks we’re used to seeing, and he preferred a more closed crop cut.

    KAI HAVERTZ
It wasn’t that long ago that Chelsea’s Havertz, 22, was still a boy.
He began his youth career with Bayer Leverkusen, who he can be seen playing for.
Even then Kai is seen running with the ball and looking up for a killer pass.

    RAHEEM STERLING
Before he became a superstar at Manchester City, and before that Liverpool, the London-born winger was another hopeful at QPR.
In 2010, he moved to the Reds from the Hoops for a fee of just £500,000.
At 15, we saw Sterling showing off his talent on Sky Sports show Soccer AM for their infamous Skill School segment.

As a kid, Hummels was treated to ski holidays.
And he certainly looks like he’s enjoying himself on the slopes, as he’s spotted running on the snow.

Another towering defender, but on our side, Maguire grew up in Sheffield.
In this photo, he’s believed to be about five – sporting a trendy bucket cap to shield him from the sun.
That prominent ‘slabhead’ was there as a youngster.

    TONI KROOS
    He’s hardly changed at all.
In fairness, a teen Kroos doesn’t look too different to the Rolls-Royce of a midfielder we see today.
Standing proudly next to his mum and dad in his local team’s strip, he looks ready to be a footballer.

    HARRY KANE
It’s no secret now that Three Lions captain Kane was an Arsenal fan growing up.

The England striker even trained with their U8 team as a youngster before switching allegiances to Spurs.
He even dyed his hair red – he loved the Gunners so much.
For Spurs fans, though, all his forgiven. And if he’s the match-winner against Germany, he will be painting the town the red.

Why is Zlatan Ibrahimovic not playing for Sweden against Ukraine in Euro 2020?

ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC has been one of the most talented and recognisable footballers of the past two decades. But at Euro 2020, for the second tournament running, he is playing no part for his native Sweden.

Why isn’t Zlatan Ibrahimovic playing for Sweden at Euro 2020?
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, missed out on World Cup 2018 after retiring from international football five years ago.
However, his retirement is NOT the reason he is unable to appear for Sweden at Euro 2020.
