England ratings: Harry Maguire and John Stones dominate to inspire win over arch rivals Germany

ENGLAND avenged their Euro 96 heartbreak with a sensational 2-0 win over Germany in the last 16 of Euro 2020 – their first knockout victory over their arch rivals since 1966.Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane scored the all-important goals, but how did the England players rate at Wembley?

    JORDAN PICKFORD – 7
Alert to clear his lines as Werner raced through early on.
Then produced vital stop when Chelsea star was clean through and reacted well to tip over Havertz volley.
    KYLE WALKER – 6
Sound enough defensively in a three but passing was off the mark in the first half at times, leading to slow build-up.
Better in the second half as he adjusted to his role.
    JOHN STONES – 8
Allowed Werner down his side for first half chance but did brilliantly to snuff out striker in second half chance.
Been a consistently good performer throughout the tournament and excellent again.

    HARRY MAGUIRE – 8
Won towering headers as he tried to stamp his authority over Muller and Werner but header over from close range when well placed.
Defensively very good and stepped out with the ball too as he grew in confidence.

    KIERAN TRIPPIER – 6
Got the upper hand early on in his personal duel with Gosens and defensively sound throughout.
Set piece delivery was decent but crossing from open play was lacking.
    KALVIN PHILLIPS – 7
Struggled with Rice in early stages as they were left outnumbered in the middle, but soon got up to speed.
Unable to link up creatively with front three but tireless display.
    DECLAN RICE – 7
Early booking left him playing on a knife-edge but after slow start found the pace of the game to help gain control in midfield.
More industrious after the break, his best display of the tournament.

    LUKE SHAW – 7
Made plenty of runs forward without ever getting into dangerous positions in opening half.
Did his job defensively and played delightful cross for the vital goal.
    BUKAYO SAKA – 6
Showed intent with skill and run down the right to get fans on their feet.
But gradually faded out of the game as England got bogged down with their slow passing.
    HARRY KANE – 5
A passenger for the opening half as the game went on around him the squandered chance on the stroke of the break.
Returned to anonymity for the second half, but finally did something with his late header.

    RAHEEM STERLING – 7
Fine long range shot was tipped around the post and surging run almost set up the opener on the stroke of half-time.
Most threatening player, ran down a few blind alleys but arrived at the vital moment to score.

    SUBS
JACK GREALISH (on for Saka 68) – Rolled the ball perfectly for Shaw to cross for Sterling’s goal, then set up Kane’s header. 7
JORDAN HENDERSON (on for Rice 86) – On to see the game out. 6
    GERMANY
    Neuer 6; Ginter 5 (Can 86), Hummels 6, Rudiger 7; Kimmich 6, Kroos 7, Goretzka 7, Gosens 5 (Sane 86); Havertz 7, Muller 6; Werner 5 (Gnabry 67, 6)

England 2 Germany 0: Harry Kane and Sterling send Southgate’s heroes through and dump bitter rivals out of Euro 2020

RAHEEM STERLING and Harry Kane sank the Germans with late goals and blew open England’s route to the final of the Euros. At a rocking Wembley, Gareth Southgate’s showed an un-English sense of nous as they bored the Germans to death on their way to a fourth straight clean sheet.

But Sterling fired England ahead on 75 minutes and Kane nodded a second – with both goals featuring Luke Shaw and super-sub Jack Grealish, the darling of all England.
Southgate showed extreme caution with his starting line-up and England defended in numbers but nobody here cared as 40,000 roared every block and tackle as if they were goals.
Sterling started and ended the 75th-minute attack which sent England on course for a quarter-final with Sweden or Ukraine in Rome on Saturday night, bursting forward from midfield and then nudged home a cross from Shaw.
And after Shaw ran at the German defence, Grealish centred for Kane to score with a stooping header.

Obviously not inspired by the 14 goals scored in Tuesday’s two outrageously entertaining last-16 ties, Southgate chose five defenders, two defensive midfielders and another, in Bukayo Saka, whose played plenty of his football at full-back.
Blessed with three outstanding playmakers in Grealish, Phil Foden and Mason Mount, Southgate started with none of them, making Jose Mourinho look like Pep Guardiola in the process.
A half-full Wembley boorishly booed the German national anthem and a significant number booed the taking of the knee.
We started off with a poor set-piece from Shaw, then England gave the ball away several times in dangerous positions before Declan Rice was booked for hacking down Leon Goretzka on the edge of the box – Kai Havertz wasting the free-kick.

Then Saka finally got on the ball and was bodychecked by Antonio Rudiger before Sterling cut in from the left and had a venomous curling shot pushed away by Manuel Neuer.
From a Kieran Trippier centre, Harry Maguire – later awarded the Man of The Match award – sent a close-range header over when he ought to have scored.
But an incisive pas from Havertz sent his Chelsea team-mate Timo Werner racing through, Jordan Pickford saving with his legs.
Right on half-time, Sterling darted through, went down and appealed in vain for a penalty with the sluggish Harry Kane unable to put away the loose ball.
Soon after the break, Havertz hammered a shot which Pickford pushed over.

Kane appeared to injure his knee after an aerial challenge with Mats Hummels but he limped on.
After ten minutes of the Wembley crowd hollering for ‘Super Jackie Grealish’, Southgate relented, bringing on the Aston Villa maverick in place of Saka.
After Sterling opened the scoring there were two major alarms for England – Maguire bringing down Josh Kimmich on the edge of the area, then Thomas Muller running clean through and screwing his shot wide.
But Kane, who had looked off-the-pace, headed home a centre from Grealish to take the roof and the arch off Wembley – and end Joachim Low’s 15-year reign with a chastening defeat.

Watch Thomas Muller’s horror miss to draw Germany level with England after going through one-on-one with Pickford

THOMAS MULLER missed a huge opportunity to draw Germany level in their Euro 2020 last 16 clash with England – a miss that ended up costing his side dearly. The Bayern Munich hitman burst through on goal just a matter of moments after Raheem Sterling put Gareth Southgate’s side in front in the 75th minute.

Wembley fell deafly silent as the veteran striker strode towards Jordan Pickford’s goal, with many expecting the back of the net to bulge.
But thankfully for Three Lions fans across the world, Muller dragged his effort wide of Pickford’s far post.
It was an incredible miss – and means Muller has still never scored at a European Championships despite his prolific record for the Germans.
At the age of 31 – it’s quite possible it was the last chance for the 2010 World Cup golden boot winner.
A huge cheer erupted as the ball went out of play, which prompted a slew of England fans to take to Twitter to express their delight.
One said: “This is why Muller Corners are finished yoghurt.”
    Another said: “Puller is finished.”
And another said: “Football gods don’t want him to score in the Euro.”

One remarked: “Yeah he’s retiring from the national team after this game.”
Muller’s miss proved to be costly as his side ended up going 2-0 down a matter of moments later.
England skipper Harry Kane put the tie to bed in the 86th minute with a header from just outside of the six-yard box.
Kane’s first goal of the tournament sparked pandemonium up and down the country and sent fans in attendance into a state of delirium.
Former England hitman Alan Shearer was over the moon after the final whistle, saying: “What an occasion.
“The atmosphere was absolutely amazing. Well done to the England players, well done to Gareth Southgate because he had a plan before the game.
Harry Kane celebrates firing England into a two-goal leadCredit: GETTY

“Plenty of impatient people in this stadium were shouting for more forward players on the pitch but he had his game plan.
“He put Grealish on at the right time and they got a little bit of luck when they needed it at 1-0 when Muller went through, you’d expect him to score there.
“It was a very dominant performance and they did what they had to.”
Former Germany international Jurgen Klopp was quick to praise Southgate’s troops, saying: “This is England’s moment. Fair play.”
England will await the winners of Sweden and Ukraine’s last 16 clash at Hampden Park this evening.
Their quarter-final tie will take place in Rome on Saturday night, but Three Lions supporters won’t be allowed to enter the country as Italy is currently on the amber travel list.

The 26-year-old’s direct running kick-started the move as he turned and fizzed a ball into Harry Kane who was on the edge of the area.
The Spurs striker was allowed to get his head up and send a pass wide to the onrushing Luke Shaw.
The Manchester United left-back then delivered an inch-perfect low cross which Sterling allowed to come across his body and slot past Manuel Neuer.
Scenes of mass jubilation at Wembley were sparked as the City winger raced away in celebration with his arms wide.
Fortunately for Sterling and England, he was then given an almighty let-off just minutes later after his loose pass let Thomas Muller through on goal.
Wembley fell deafly silent as the veteran striker strode towards Jordan Pickford’s goal, with many expecting the back of the net to bulge.
But thankfully for Three Lions fans across the world, Muller dragged his effort wide of Pickford’s far post.

England then punished their arch-rivals late on as Kane nodded a second to seal a famous win.
After Shaw ran at the German defence, super-sub Grealish centered for Kane to score with a stooping header.
England will now face Ukraine on Saturday in Rome for a spot in the last four following their 2-1 win over ten-man Sweden.

Time to bring on Sancho…— Erling Haaland (@ErlingHaaland) June 29, 2021

The 21-year-old was left on the bench again for the last-16 tie against arch-rivals Germany at Wembley on Tuesday.
That is despite the fact that Sancho has completed more take-ons and played more through balls than anyone else in the Bundesliga since 2018.
And Haaland was among the many calling for the winger to make his bow against Joachim Low’s side at half-time.
England – who had switched to a back-five to match the Germans – struggled to create anything of note during the first 45.

Haaland clearly feels Gareth Southgate’s men could use Sancho’s attacking impetus against many of the players he faces in the Bundesliga.
He tweeted: “Time to bring on Sancho…”
Unsurprisingly, Haaland wasn’t alone in his opinion with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano replying with wide-eyed emoji.
One fan commented: “Erling Haaland knows!!!”

But Southgate clearly disagreed and threw on Jack Grealish, who played a role in both goals in a famous 2-0 victory.
Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane scored as the Three Lions finally produced some attacking threat.
Sancho was yet again an unused substitute with the star winger yet to play a minute at the tournament.

Despite Germany’s protests for a straight red, referee Danny Makkelie brandished a yellow much to the relief of supporters inside Wembley.
However some eagle-eyed fans watching from home initally thought Rice had been given his marching orders.
Makkelie appeared to be holding a red card before switching to a yellow.
Twitter account Football Joe wrote: “Nearly died a little bit there.”
Another viewer wrote: “They stopped talking quickly about how ref bottled that red for Rice…”
Other England fans believed it was only a matter of time before Rice was sent off.

Hazard, 30, limped off the field after featuring in every game of the tournament so far.
Boss Roberto Martinez initially eased his injury fears by suggesting he could be fit for the semi-finals if they KO Italy on Friday.
However, pictures emerging from the Belgium camp show a different story.
Hazard, who has endured an injury-riddled season, looked in real discomfort as he strolled around the training pitch.
Belgium could be handed a fitness boost with star man Kevin De Bruyne.
The Manchester City midfielder was also subbed off three minutes into the second half against Portugal with a knock.
De Bruyne was then spotted with an ice pack on his ankle raising doubts over his involvement in the rest of the tournament.
But the 30-year-old participated in light training on Tuesday and could be set to take on the Italians on Friday night.

Speaking of the pair’s injuries, Martinez said: “The initial information that we have from medical staff is positive for both, they will remain with the squad and they have no structural damage.
“But we are running up against time and it is very difficult to see them fully fit. So, we have to take it day by day to try and get them fit.

    AT THE DOUBLE
Germany’s Ilkay Gündogan has scored twice at Wembley Stadium, for Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League final and for Manchester City in the Premier League.
He could become just the second player to score at the ground for a club side and the German national team, after Per Mertesacker.
    Gundogan starts from the bench.
    TURBO TIMO
Germany boss Joachim Low highlighted Timo Werner’s terrifying pace as one of his strengths.
Speaking to ARD, Low said: “We need depth up-front today and Timo Werner offers a lot of qualities there.
“He has tremendous pace and can hurt defences that way.”
Rio Ferdinand – on BBC pundit duty – agrees with Low’s assessment of Werner.
Ferdinand said: “Werner is the one player in this team that can stretch our back line.
“He did it in the Champions League final against Manchester City.
“He’ll get chances. In the Premier League he’s fluffed them. This is different in a German shirt.”

Speaking in the build-up to the game, he said: “I’m super excited. The fans are going crazy.
“They’re enjoying the moment. The VTs, us here, all of the media, we talk about the past and we talk about the history.

“We have been erratic, but we know that we can be strong if we manage to get a few things right on the pitch.
“If we don’t, it gets tricky for us. It’s going to be a completely different type of match against England and we should benefit from that.
