Everton players party wildly at Anfield as they celebrate historic first win at Liverpool since 1999

EVERTON’S players celebrated widly in the away dressing room after a first win against Liverpool at Anfield since 1999.
Goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson helped Carlo Ancelotti’s side to a hard-fought 2-0 win in the Merseyside derby to end Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the fixture.

Everton left-back Niels Nkounkou posted footage of the Toffees’ post-match celebrations on Snapchat – with assistant coach Duncan Ferguson even joining in with the antics.
The likes of Lucas Digne and local boys Mason Holgate and Tom Davies could also be seen in the video, as Everton earned a first Merseyside derby win – home or away – for more than 10 years.
Players could be heard screaming with delight in the clip.
And some embraced each other and jumped up and down with joy.

Their last victory over Liverpool came in October 2010, when David Moyes was still in charge at Goodison Park.
Goals from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta won Evertonians bragging rights on that occasion but the Blues had gone 23 games without a win in the fixture before Saturday’s clash.
And it also took them 23 games – and 22 years – for them to triumph at Anfield again.
Everton had not won on their rivals’ home turf since September 1999.

Kevin Campbell’s fourth-minute strike was all that separated the two sides in a bad-tempered contest, as Liverpool were reduced to nine men and Everton’s Francis Jeffers also saw red.
Ten draws and 13 defeats at Anfield later and the Toffees finally have their elusive win.
BETS OF THE DAY: DON’T MISS TODAY’S BEST ODDS BOOSTS

Richarlison gave Everton a third-minute lead with a fine finish

Gylfi Sigurdsson sealed the win from the penalty spot late on

Captain Seamus Coleman, the only player left from the side that beat Liverpool in 2010, hopes Everton can push on after ending their Anfield hoodoo and praised boss Ancelotti for his impact on the side.
Coleman said: “It means a lot to us all, we are starting to get a bunch of players in the dressing room who are not tied down with that baggage.
“It’s great for us, the fans and the Everton fans within the club.
“And when you have a world-class manager in the dugout, you fully believe in these games, he spoke about how he did for Napoli.
“Once you are part of this club, you know the history about winning here and the last time we won a cup.
“We need to tidy up a little bit when they come to Goodison Park, we are still working.
“The mindset has to change and it is, not to just be beating Liverpool but being successful in our own right.
“I keep saying it, on a day to day basis we have to be professional and believe in the process.
“We cannot turn it on and off like in the last few weeks.”

Erik Lamela denies hilarious wardrobe gaffe after Spurs star apparently zipped up coat to jumper underneath

TOTTENHAM ace Erik Lamela has denied he was guilty of a fashion faux pas after Spurs’ Europa League first leg against Wolfsberg.
Lamela was snapped alongside team-mate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after Spurs’ 4-1 win over the Austrian side on Thursday – which was played in Hungary due to coronavirus restrictions.

It’s just seems. I’m not as crazy as you think 🤪🙃😂
    — Erik Manuel Lamela (@ErikLamela) February 19, 2021

A fan on Twitter spotted that the Argentine seemed to have zipped his puffer jacket to another jacket he was wearing underneath.
Fortunately Lamela saw the funny side, responding: “It just seems [like it].
“I’m not as crazy as you think.”
Lamela’s followers were less than convinced by his rebuttal, although he may have started a new trend if some of the responses are anything to go by.

One fan replied: “Actually pretty smart. Warmth of two coats, only one zip to undo.”
Another tweeted: “Ngl that half puffer jacket and half training jacket doesn’t even look bad.”
Lamela notched a first assist of the season after coming off the bench against Wolfsberg, setting up Carlos Vinicius for Spurs’ fourth goal.
Goals from Son Heung-Min, Gareth Bale and Lucas Moura had given Jose Mourinho’s side a comfortable first half lead.

Wolfsberg’s Michael Lindl made it 3-1 from the penalty spot and Spurs were given a fright when Christopher Wernitzig’s effort thumped against the bar and bounced off the line.
But Spurs managed to restore their three-goal advantage in the 87th minute, as Lamela nodded on Hojbjerg’s cross to present Vinicius with a tap-in inside the six-yard box.
The return leg will be played in London next week but before that Spurs face a trip to fifth-placed West Ham on Sunday.
Lamela and co will be hoping to close the six-point gap on their London rivals and get their top-four tilt back on track after just one win in their last five Premier League matches.

Everton Beats Liverpool at Anfield, Adding to the Champions' Pain

AdvertisementContinue reading the main storySupported byContinue reading the main storyOn SoccerA Collision at Anfield Does Little to Slow Liverpool’s FallEverton’s victory, a cause for deserved celebration, reveals a broken Liverpool team holding tight to a system that has stopped working.Mohamed Salah cut down by Tom Davies, a fair reflection of Liverpool’s afternoon, its month, its season.Credit…Pool photo by Phil NobleFeb. 20, 2021, 4:50 p.m. ETLIVERPOOL, England — It is every week, now, that Liverpool seems to lose another little piece of itself. An unbeaten home record that stretched back more than three years disappeared in January, spirited away by Burnley. The sense of Anfield as a fortress collapsed soon after, stormed in short order by Brighton and then by Manchester City. The golden afterglow of the long-awaited Premier League crown that arrived last summer has been dimming for some time, but it darkened for good last week, with Jürgen Klopp conceding the Premier League title while still in the bitter grip of winter. And then, as fireworks boomed and car horns blared across Merseyside on Saturday evening, came what may be the most hurtful shift of all. Everton had not tasted victory at Anfield this century. It had not won a derby at all in more than a decade. For Liverpool, the impotence of its neighbor and rival had been a source of such unbridled glee that it had long since been fused into part of its self-identity.But now, all of that, too, has gone. Richarlison put Everton ahead after just three minutes. Carlo Ancelotti’s team held Liverpool at arm’s length with a degree of comfort, ruffled only in flurries, for the rest of the evening. The only hint that the Everton players knew they were close to making — or, perhaps, ending — history came in their celebrations when Gylfi Sigurdsson settled the game from the penalty spot with 10 minutes to play, completing the 2-0 score line. The reactions were raucous and definitive, the sound of a curse being lifted. On the touchline, Duncan Ferguson, part of the fabric of Everton for almost all of that 20-year spell, first as a player and now as a coach, bounced and roared.Liverpool’s defeat was its fourth straight at home.Credit…Pool photo by Laurence GriffithsEverton’s victory was its first at Anfield since 1999.Credit…Pool photo by Laurence GriffithsOf course, Ancelotti and his players deserve praise and admiration for the precision and the poise of their performance, but the approach that brought them victory relies on a confluence of factors. First, of course, is that your team must be focused and disciplined and organized: not far from perfect, in fact.Second, you must be, if not lucky, then at least not unlucky: even the most finely laid plan can be undone by an unfortunate bounce of the ball, an arbitrary deflection, a moment of wonder. And third, you need your opponent to be found wanting. A team full of confidence and energy and ideas will, most often, pick a way through even the most masterful defense. Liverpool lacked all of those things utterly and absolutely. It is not desperately hard to work out why Liverpool has toiled so much this season. Klopp, certainly, does not believe there is any great mystery here. Liverpool has lost not only Virgil Van Dijk, but Joe Gomez and Joel Matip to injury, tearing the base out of its defense, of its team. Klopp has had little choice but to dismantle his midfield to patch up his defense. But that is just the start. At times, it has seemed as if everything that could have gone wrong for Liverpool this season has gone wrong. It is easier to list the players who have not spent at least a few weeks in the treatment room: Andy Robertson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané.Fabinho, the first midfielder drafted into defense, is currently absent with his own injury. Jordan Henderson, the second, limped off in the first half Saturday with a groin injury. Alisson Becker, widely regarded as the one of the world’s best goalkeepers and the one reassuring presence in Liverpool’s make-do-and-mend back-line, made three glaring errors in the defeats to Manchester City and Leicester.Jordan Henderson became the latest indispensable Liverpool player lost to injury.Credit…Pool photo by Laurence GriffithsIf the root of the problem does not require forensic investigation, though, the response to it might. Klopp has, at times, appeared noticeably more irascible than usual this season, clashing with television reporters, snapping at journalists in news conferences, exchanging cross words with opposing managers. When it emerged earlier this month that he had endured a personal tragedy — the death of his mother — it seemed as if that offered an explanation for the change in mood. Klopp, though, is adamant that he is able to compartmentalize his emotions; those who work with him say there has been no real change. Klopp has always been prickly. What has changed is the perception. Terseness from a position of strength is a flexing of the muscles. From a position of weakness, it looks a lot like a tantrum.Indeed, it is striking that, even as what started as a dip has become a slump and now, on the back four consecutive home defeats — the club’s worst run since 1923 — has the look of a spiral, Liverpool has not sought change of any sort. That is true of the club as a whole — its failure to have a central defensive reinforcement ready to go on January 1 was the act of a club operating in the old world, not the new — and it is especially true of Klopp. The style has stayed the same. The system has stayed the same. “The only way I know is to try it again, and again, and again,” he said Friday. It was a telling statement. Klopp is the archetype of what might be called a system coach: He has a way of playing that is baked into his soul. His counterpart at Everton, Ancelotti, is the opposite: a manager who once coached Andrea Pirlo but who is perfectly content, in a different time, to instruct Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey to punt the ball long and hopeful, over and over again, hoping to catch the right current in the wind.Everton’s victory pulled it even with Liverpool on points in the Premier League table. But the teams are headed in different directions.Credit…Pool photo by Laurence GriffithsSuch pragmatism is anathema to Klopp. Changing his style, so integral to his identity, would mean changing himself. That is the trait that has brought him such success, of course; it is possible, though, that it might also be what limits it in certain circumstances, that his loyalty to the system is damaging when external factors mean the system itself can no longer work.Klopp has experienced a run like this — a period when it feels as though nothing goes right — once before, in his last year at Borussia Dortmund. Then, too, his squad was ravaged by injuries. He had, in the previous seasons, dealt with the departure of a raft of key players, too. He refused to compromise his beliefs. Dortmund finished seventh, and he stepped down. The echoes of that year grow stronger with every passing week at Liverpool, with every new and unwanted record that falls. Liverpool keeps doing the same things, expecting different results, a team banging its head against a brick wall. It keeps losing all those little pieces of itself, lost in the shadow of an identity that cannot countenance change.AdvertisementContinue reading the main story More

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have a huge four-goal advantage ahead of the second-leg at Old Trafford.
But former Sporting CP star Fernandes has called for the team to ‘grow up’ if they want to win trophies.
Speaking after the game, he told BT Sport: “We need to understand that we have to grow up, we have to get better and better.
“Of course the most important is the results that give you a bit of confidence to go into the next game and try to win again.

“My target is to score the most goals I can and assist my team-mates to score to.
“The position I play is to do that, assist and score when you can.
“The most important target is the trophies. Trophies will be more important than scoring goals.”
Fernandes has been the star of the show at United since he joined from Sporting CP in January 2020.

He has has contributed to TEN more goals in all competitions than any other Prem player since his debut.
Club legend Paul Scholes praised Fernandes for his performance against Real Sociedad.
Fernandes scored twice to take his season tally up to 21 before Marcus Rashford and Daniel James increased their advantage.
But Fernandes has warned his team-mates not to underestimate the importance of the second-leg.
He told BT Sport: “The result of course [is pleasing], it’s about winning, we want to win the games.
“We did everything well. The result is on our side but we still have the second leg and a tough game to do again at home.

“We know 4-0 is a good result, but we have to be aware of what Sociedad can do and be ready for the second leg.
“We don’t have to look at the results, we have to look at the performance.
“We know we don’t perform well in some games, but still in some games we don’t get the result we want and we perform well.”

How Arsenal could line up against Man City with Kieran Tierney BACK, Thomas Partey out and midfield changes

KIERAN TIERNEY could make his first start in over a month when Arsenal face Manchester City on Sunday.
The defender, 23, returned to action during his side’s 1-1 draw with Benfica in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Here’s one way the Gunners could start against Manchester City

Tierney has missed Arsenal’s last five Premier League matches with a calf injury.
But he has recovered in time for the clash against Pep Guardiola’s league leaders.
The Scottish star was used as a second half substitute during the draw with Benfica.
But he is expected to replace Cedric in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

However, the Gunners look set to be without midfield powerhouse Thomas Partey.
The £45million signing did not travel with the club for the midweek Europa League tie.
He has been training on his own since he injured his hamstring against Aston Villa.
Arteta could be forced to stick with Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos in the middle.

But yet again the Arsenal boss will have to decide who is going to start in the No10 role.
Real Madrid loanee Martin Odegaard started behind the striker against Benfica.
Emile Smith Rowe was forced to play out wide – which was questioned by Arsenal club legend Martin Keown.
In a bid to beat City, Smith Rowe could start in the hole with Nicolas Pepe on the left and Bukayo Saka on the right.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is likely to lead the line despite his poor performance during the week.
He admitted after the match that he should have made more of his chances before Saka saved the day.

Kieran Tierney continues cult hero status at Arsenal as he wears short-sleeved T-shirt while others wrapped up in Rome

KIERAN TIERNEY rocked up to Rome’s Stadio Olimpico in just a t-shirt while his team-mates wrapped up warm in their best winter gear.
The former Celtic star came on as a substitute during the second half of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Benfica in the Europa League on Thursday.

Tierney, who returned to training this week, was pictured walking across the pitch before kick-off.
Despite the chilly conditions, he refused to break the habit of a lifetime by wearing a warm jacket.
The 23-year-old looked dressed for a summer’s evening as he strolled around in a polo shirt.
Meanwhile, Hector Bellerin was spotted wearing a puffer jacket and a woolly hat before the game.

Arsenal shared the two snaps of Bellerin and Tierney with their Twitter followers.
One fan responded: “Does Tierney not own a coat or what? This guy dresses like it’s 75 degrees everyday.”
Another asked: “Does Tierney ever feel cold?”
But others were concerned that he was wearing tracksuit bottoms instead of his normal shorts.

Tierney proved he was superhuman as he trained in the SNOW in shorts and a t-shirt.
He even rocked the same polo shirt when he turned up for the freezing clash against Dundalk.
And fans could not believe their eyes when he arrived to a game with his gear in a Tesco carrier bag.
Tierney is back in action for the Gunners after missing five games with a nasty calf injury.
He has made 17 Premier League appearances this season, scoring one goal and making one assist.

Man Utd transfer blow as Dortmund CONFIRM Erling Haaland release clause does not activate until 2022… for just £65m

DORTMUND have confirmed that Erling Haaland’s release clause cannot be activated until 2022.
Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona are among the clubs that are keen to sign the 20-year-old.

But their hopes of landing the former Red Bull Salzburg star on a cut-price deal this summer are OVER.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed his £65million release clause will not come into play until June 2022.
Speaking in November, Dortmund general director Hans-Joachim Watzke said: “No, there’s no release clause in summer 2021 for Erling Haaland”
It is understood that Dortmund have no intention of selling the Norway international anytime soon.

Since he arrived in Germany, he has established himself as one of the best strikers on the planet.
He has scored 41 goals and made eight assists in just 42 games for the Bundesliga giants.
The United target hit the headlines again this week after he scored twice in the 3-2 win over Sevilla.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown admits he has ‘reservations’ over Martin Odegaard taking No10 role from Emile Smith Rowe

MARTIN KEOWN has ‘reservations’ over Martin Odegaard playing the No10 role ahead of Emile Smith Rowe.
Odegaard started behind the striker as the Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw with Benfica in the Europa League.

As a result, rising star Smith Rowe was forced out wide and Nicolas Pepe was dropped to the bench.
But Keown thinks Real Madrid loanee Odegaard has a lot to prove until he secures the No10 spot for good.
The 54-year-old told BT Sport: “A lot of the problems for the Arsenal team is finding that spare player.
“It’s been Smith Rowe in the recent run. Odegaard has been given the luxury of playing in there.

“We’re still waiting to see, I think there’s a player under there but he’s not played much football for Real Madrid, maybe seven or eight games this season, maybe a bit short of fitness.
“But if you don’t give him the ball you can’t see what he’s capable of, but there were moments when he had the ball, good passes.
“He does really well for the goal, he’s a player they want to try and build around.”
Before he added: “The reservations I have is Smith Rowe was playing especially well in that position.

“Now, perhaps he [Arteta] didn’t feel he was getting enough from [Nicolas] Pepe defensively so Smith Rowe’s gone into that position.
“Now you’ve got Saka and Smith Rowe in wide positions.
“They have really good movement, tuck inside nicely, they give that space for the full-backs to get wide and they know when to press.
“But maybe they lose a little bit, for the time being, until Odegaard is ready to match speed. There were glimpses of really good play.”
Odegaard put in a promising display but the Gunners wasted a handful of chances against Benfica.
Pizzi scored from the penalty spot to give the home side the lead before Bukayo Saka bagged the equaliser.
Tony Adams has hit out the club for signing Odegaard instead of prioritising defenders.
And the 22-year-old has reportedly upset Real Madrid for failing to confirm that his future lies there.

He said: “You never know what happens, but first of all my focus is about the rest of the season.
“Hopefully (I will) help the team, and then we’ll see what happens.”
He has made three appearances in the Premier League this season, but remains without a goal or an assist.
