Cesc Fabregas celebrated Chelsea’s Battle of the Bridge draw with Tottenham ‘like I had won the league’

CESC FABREGAS has revealed that drawing with Tottenham in the Battle of the Bridge was like winning a trophy. The Blues came from two goals down to draw the May 2016 fixture 2-2, ensuring Tottenham could not win the league and handing the title to Leicester City.
Cesc Fabregas celebrates the 2-2 draw with Tottenham in May 2016
And for Arsenal and Chelsea icon Fabregas it was a brilliant moment he will not forget.
Prior to the game kicking off the Spaniard revealed on TV he was determined to keep Tottenham from winning the league, and said he was accused of trying to provoke Spurs’ players.
In his column for The Telegraph, Fabregas wrote: “Winning a derby can feel close to winning a trophy and it was like this when I won the Battle of the Bridge with Chelsea.
“I had been on television not long before the game and said that I did not want Tottenham to win the league, which I know upset their supporters and probably their players.
“Sometimes as players you have to be so politically correct and speak like a politician, but I was just being honest and speaking my true feelings.
“I did not think I went over the top because I think people know that I don’t want Spurs winning the title, ever.
“Even though we had not won the game, drawing and stopping Tottenham winning the title felt similar to a trophy and I remember I went out to celebrate after the game, like I would have if we had just won the league or a cup. It was just one of those moments you wanted to enjoy.”
Anti-Tottenham sentiment runs deep at Chelsea, and former captain John Terry made that clear to the squad.
    Royal Ascot special 🏇🎩

Fabregas shared how the former centre-back delivered a speech before his final game, warning his team-mates to never let Tottenham overtake Chelsea or become better than the Blues.
Fabregas took that warning on board and seemingly still holds the draw in the Battle of the Bridge as one of his best footballing memories.
He won five trophies during his spell at Chelsea, including the League Cup, FA Cup, Europa League and the Premier League, on two occasions.

Humble Ethan Ampadu cried at losing but despite talent refused to showboat as a kid on way to Wales and Chelsea stardom

ETHAN AMPADU had a winner’s mentality long before he hit the big time with Chelsea and Euro 2020 contenders Wales. The midfielder’s immense talent was unmissable from a young age, as was his desire to win every match he played in.

The 20-year-old has also become a regular fixture in Wales’ starting XICredit: Getty
Ampadu’s competitive spirit was regularly on display during his days at Stoke Hill Juniors in Exeter, but none more so than when they were cruelly eliminated from a kids’ summer tournament on penalties.
Former Stoke Hill coach David Evans told SunSport: “He used to play for us in the summer tournaments.
“And then all of sudden, there’d be a penalty shootout in the semi-final and if you win it, you’re in the final and if you lose it, you’re going home.
“And I remember seeing him in tears after we lost a penalty shootout.
“Playing in local football was Ethan’s first introduction to winning and losing and being competitive.”
Ampadu was a cut above his team-mates and opposition players in his early adolescent years but showcased humility and respect towards all those he played against.

Evans said of the 20-year-old: “He was quite quiet on the pitch, to be honest.
“He was very unlike, perhaps, what people would expect a young superstar to be.
“He was extremely polite and quiet on the pitch. He just let his football do the talking really.
“Ethan was the opposite of [not being humble]. He was absolutely humble.
“He was very quiet and unassuming, he didn’t show off in any way, shape or form. He was very respectful in the way he played the game.
“Obviously, some of the players around him weren’t of his standard, but he would never showboat or anything.
“He was just a very respectful, grounded nice lad.”

Amapdu’s talents were also recognised by Exeter City, who allowed him to continue his love affair with Stoke Hill whilst he was on their books until the age of 14.
Less than a year after breaking into the first team as a fresh-faced 15-year-old, Ampadu would be snapped up by Premier League big boys Chelsea.
Antonio Conte handed him his debut in a League Cup match against Nottingham Forest in September 2017, in which he came on as a second-half substitute for Cesc Fabregas.
His Blues bow was a great source of joy for everyone connected to Stoke Hill Juniors.
Evans said: “When he first made his debut for Chelsea, I think he came on as a sub and he came on for [Cesc] Fabregas, I was so proud.
“Everyone was screen grabbing the television and taking a photo of it. We were so excited to follow his career.
Ethan Ampadu made his Chelsea debut in September 2017Credit: Rex
“Of course, he started off by getting some games at Exeter City when he was about 16, which was unbelievable because he was playing summer football for us one and then playing professional football for Exeter City the next.
“And then very, very quickly, probably within a year, he popped up at Chelsea.
“We’ve been following his career all the way through and it’s so exciting for all the people in Exeter really.
“Not just my club that he played for, but probably all the little clubs he played against.
“Probably all the clubs around here have followed his climb to becoming an international footballer.”
Evans’ pride was even more apparent following Ampadu’s cameo appearance in Wales Euro 2020 opener against Switzerland last Saturday, although there was a slight tinge of disappointment.

He said: “To be honest, I was gutted he didn’t start because he usually does start for Wales. I was very disappointed he didn’t start.
“But I’m really, really hoping he starts against Turkey tonight.
“I’m really hoping he’s in the starting XI against Turkey.”
Ampadu’s journey from the playing fields of Hamlin Lane to the European Championships serves as a necessary reminder of the positive impact grassroots football clubs – many of which have struggled during the pandemic – can have on kids up and down the country.
Evans said: “It sends a message that everyone can be successful at football.
“You haven’t got to be at Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea to learn and develop.
“He learned and developed at Stoke Hill, at grassroots level, and then at the Exeter City Youth Academy.”

Arsenal reject £13m Granit Xhaka transfer offer from Roma as ace leads Switzerland at Euro 2020

ARSENAL have rejected a bid from Roma for midfielder Granit Xhaka, according to reports.Roma boss Jose Mourinho is believed to have been keen on the Switzerland international since arriving in Italy.
Arsenal have reportedly knocked back Roma’s first offer for Granit Xhaka
Roma boss Jose Mourinho is believed to be keen on signing Xhaka
And now the Serie A club have acted on their interest by bidding £13million for Xhaka, report the BBC.
But the offer has fallen short of Arsenal’s evaluation of the 28-year-old, who is contracted until 2023.
Xhaka was signed for £35m in 2016 so the Gunners are unwilling to sell for such a low amount.
Now Roma will decide whether to increase their bid or turn their attention to Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, another player linked with a move to the Stadio Olimpico.
The Gunners are set for a big summer of change with Eddie Nketiah and Joe Willock also attracting transfer interest.
David Luiz has already departed along with eight other players, so Mikel Arteta has some recruitment work to do.
Yves Bissouma and Ruben Neves are two midfielders linked with a move to North London and could replace Xhaka if he does leave this summer.

    Royal Ascot special 🏇🎩

Xhaka has had a mixed career at the Emirates but has been a regular over the last five years, making 220 appearances in total.
He was made Arsenal captain by Unai Emery in 2019 but a high profile bust-up with the fans saw him lose that honour.
Xhaka will currently be focused on getting Switzerland through the Euro 2020 group stage, so may not be weighing up his club future just yet.

For England, a Six-Second Culture War and a 1-0 Win

A cause, and criticism of it, only highlights that the majority of England fans all want the same thing.LONDON — Daniele Orsato caught the eye of Harry Kane, the England captain, and pointed to the turf. He had caught Kane a little unaware, perhaps — the forward was still going through a final few stretches — but he nodded his assent. Orsato, the Italian referee, put his whistle to his lips, and gave light to a six-second culture war.It is not especially unusual for England to find itself putting the finishing touches on its preparations for a major tournament against a backdrop of angst and acrimony. There is, with England, always something: a key player injured, a flavor of the month off the team, a concern over whether the squad is being treated with too much, or too little, discipline. The last few weeks have not proved particularly fertile for that sort of traditional fretting. A manufactured quarrel over whether the coach, Gareth Southgate, had erred by electing to name four specialist right backs — a lot of right backs, by anyone’s standards — on his original roster offered hope of a good, old-fashioned controversy. It sputtered when one of them, Trent Alexander-Arnold, picked up an injury that ruled him out of the tournament. Deep down, nobody thinks having three right backs is excessive. His decision to include Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire, both of them nursing injuries and neither likely to be fully fit for the group stage, might have made an acceptable alternative, but even that failed to fire. Southgate had the luxury of naming 26 players to his squad, not 23; Henderson and Maguire, two of his most experienced campaigners in the two areas of the field where his options were thinnest, were clearly worth the risk. All of which should have meant that England was in territory welcome for Southgate and disconcertingly unfamiliar for fans and the news media alike: approaching a tournament without waking up in cold sweats in the night, with no rancor filling the airwaves or consternation populating the news pages.Raheem Sterling after giving England the lead at Wembley.Justin Tallis/Pool, via ReutersInstead, Southgate and his players found themselves front and center in something much more serious. Like the vast majority of their peers in the Premier League, England’s players have, for the last year, been taking a knee before matches, a gesture adopted from athlete activists in the United States and instituted — at the players’ suggestion — in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer last year. When England took the field for its two final tuneup games ahead of this tournament — both of them staged in Middlesbrough — it did the same. This time, though, the players were jeered as they did so: by a substantial enough portion of their own fans for it to come through, loud and clear, to the watching public. For a week, the gesture and its reception seemed to set England’s players, and staff members, against the core of their own support. Taking the knee, the players were told, was divisive, it was political, it was a meaningless trinket that took attention away from real action, though none of their critics ever took the time to suggest what real action might look like.Several Conservative lawmakers railed against the players’ support for what they say is a Marxist movement dedicated to eradicating the nuclear family and attacking Israel. One, Lee Anderson, revealed that he would no longer be watching his “beloved England.” Boris Johnson, the prime minister, initially failed to condemn those who stood in opposition to an antiracist act, though he later asked that fans support the team, “not boo.”England has also been convulsed, in the past week, by the decision of a small group of students at a single Oxford college to remove a portrait of the queen from their common room. This is how a culture war is played out, in a series of what appear, in isolation, to be entirely absurdist skirmishes. Is anyone offended by some students not wanting to have a picture of the queen on their wall? Does anyone really think Jordan Pickford is a Marxist?Catherine Ivill/Getty ImagesEngland fans are experts at finding fault with their national team.Pool photo by Glyn KirkOn Sunday, though, it was much more fun to cheer.Henry Nicholls/ReutersEven under that pressure, the players stood their ground. Southgate offered not only his support, but effectively his cover, too: He had consulted his players, he knew their views and he would present them, drawing whatever fire might come their way. The Football Association, the game’s governing body in England, issued a surprisingly blunt statement outlining that the players would kneel, that they did not regard it as a political gesture and that no amount of hostility would change that. This, then, was the test: The moment after Orsato blew his whistle but before England’s opening game of Euro 2020, against Croatia, actually began, those who object to the players taking the knee, those who believe the athletes representing their country must do as they are bidden, were confronted with what, now, has become an act of defiance. The whole thing played out in the blink of an eye. The jeers began the first offensive. Just as the music cut out, there was an identifiable chorus of disapproval. But the jeers were quickly pushed back. A much larger proportion of the crowd started to cheer, to applaud, to drown out the objectors. Within six seconds, it was all over. Orsato stood up, followed by Kane and the rest of the England team. The game kicked off. Everyone cheered. This is the myth, of course. Southgate had said, as he chewed the matter over last week, that he knew his team could rely on the support of the fans during the game. That is true: The people who were booing wanted England to win. They celebrated when Raheem Sterling, as articulate an advocate for the causes reflected by taking the knee as anyone in soccer, scored the game’s single goal in the bright, warm sunshine. It is but a small leap from there to the belief that, should this prove to be the first win of seven over the next month, should England end this summer as European champion for the first time in its history, then some sort of social victory will have been secured, too.Gareth Southgate with Kyle Walker, one of the many decisions that worked Sunday.Pool photo by Laurence GriffithsThat is what they said about the Black, Blanc, Beur team that led France to the World Cup in 1998; it is what they said of the German teams of 2008 and 2010 and on, too, the ones made up not of Jürgens and Dietmars and Klauses but Mesuts and Samis and Serdars. These were the teams that could usher in a new, postracial future. Soccer liked to tell itself that it offered a better vision of what a country could be.It is a chimera, of course. Everyone cheered at the end here, too, once England had seen off a tame Croatian team, the sort of victory that is noteworthy not for its spectacle but for its cool and calm efficiency. England barely got out of second gear because it did not need to, much; better to save the energy for the tougher tests that lie in wait. But that does not mean anything has changed. There is still the possibility that when Scotland comes to town next weekend, the players will be jeered by another small section of the crowd. It will be a minority, once again, just as it was here, and there is hope in that, a poignant metaphor for the dangers of assuming that the most vociferous must automatically speak for some sort of vast constituency. But they will still be there, the great anti-Marxist vanguard, unyielding and unchanging and unwilling. No victory on a soccer field will change that. The sight of Sterling’s lifting a trophy on July 11, in this same stadium, would not alter anyone’s worldview. Soccer is the stage on which we have these conversations — in Europe, as Henry Mance wrote in The Financial Times last week, it is often the only place that many of us really interact with our nation as a concept — but it is an imperfect one.We want a team that reflects the country, we say, but we do not mean it: We want a team that reflects us, and our perception of what that country is. England can win, or it can lose, over the next month, but it will make no difference at all in the broader context. It is too much to ask a single sports team to reflect what a country means to 55 million individuals. It is far too much to expect it to heal all of its divisions with a single victory, no matter how loudly it is cheered. More

No Man Utd or Liverpool player in England tournament team for first time in 29 years

ENGLAND faced Croatia without any Liverpool or Manchester United players in the starting line-up.It is the first time since Euro 92 that the Three Lions have started without a player from those two clubs, per OptaJoe.
Manchester City are the best represented team in the England line up to face Croatia
Marcus Rashford misses out despite starting in England’s last game
Jordan Henderson has been deemed not fit enough to play from the start
England drew that match with France 0-0 so Gareth Southgate will hope his bold decision pays off this time around.
Marcus Rashford started in the final warm-up game against Romania last Sunday.
He even scored from the penalty spot but has not done enough to beat Raheem Sterling to a starting place.
Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson, who missed a penalty last week, also misses out despite playing 45 minutes last time out.
He has struggled for fitness after picking up an injury against Everton in February.
Luke Shaw may be the most surprising omission of any United or Liverpool player.
He has been in fine form this season but Gareth Southgate has opted to play Kieran Trippier at left-back, despite his natural position being on the right.

Harry Kane creates perfect footballer including Paul Pogba’s skill and Marco Reus’ free-kicks ahead of £150m transfer

HARRY KANE has designed his perfect footballer using the attributes of some of the biggest names in the sport. The Tottenham striker may be the source of England’s hope for the Euros but he is still envious of his fellow professionals.
Harry Kane has listed the attributes he most admirers in five of his football peers
What every Tottenham player earns following Mourinho’s pay rant
And the attributes Kane has highlighted gives an insight into the strengths he wishes to add to his game.
As quoted by respected Spanish newspaper AS, Kane shared the characteristics players would want to have, saying: “Pogba’s ability, Reus’s fantastic free-kicks, Saúl’s perfect driving, Piatek’s intuition and Donnarumma’s size.”
Interestingly, Krzysztof Piatek is the only striker Kane references, and he was linked with a move to the Tottenham Stadium in January 2020.
The Poland international scored seven goals in 32 games last season despite his so-called intuition, which shows 23-goal Kane is doing something the Pole is not.
Kane’s devastating form has made him hot property in the transfer market, perhaps even more so than Paul Pogba and Gianluigi Donnarumma, two of the names he mentioned who could also change clubs this summer.
Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City have all been linked with the England captain this summer in a potential £150m move.
SunSport revealed City were interested in a possible swap deal for Kane involving Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling.

Jose Mourinho’s sacking was PLAYERS’ fault, says Tottenham ace Doherty as he calls Special One ‘one of the best ever’

MATT DOHERTY has defended Jose Mourinho and believes the players did not do enough to prevent his dismissal from Tottenham. The Portuguese, who is SunSport’s football expert for the Euros, was sacked after 17 months in charge at the Tottenham Stadium.
Matt Doherty reveals he had a good relationship with Jose Mourinho and is sad to see him leave
Mourinho was sacked in April after 17 months in charge of Tottenham
He won 45 out of 86 games and was let go just days before Spurs’ Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City.
Despite failing to make Spurs better Doherty has sympathy for Mourinho, and suggests the squad let down their former boss.
Doherty told Sky Sports: “He was only there for 18 months. If it was three or four years, it could be a different conversation, but we just weren’t getting the results for him.
“The manager is always the one to lose his job, but as players, we were the ones on the pitch and we weren’t able to get the results for him, which was a shame because he’s one of the best managers ever.”
Doherty was signed by Mourinho last summer but he started just 13 league games in his debut season.
But he was happy with the amount of games he played and got on very well with Mourinho.
The Republic of Ireland international added: “I definitely got a fair crack of the whip. I still played 25, 26, 27 games – that’s a lot of games in a season, so I definitely got a fair crack.
