Rio Ferdinand slams ‘no man’s land’ Arsenal and claims club are ‘not threat to anybody’ after Willock move to Newcastle

RIO FERDINAN has slammed Arsenal’s decision to let Joe Willock leave the club, saying the Gunners will not be a threat in the Premier League next season. Willock is heading back to St James’ Park to rejoin Newcastle in a £22million deal following a successful loan spell last season.

And speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “I don’t know how Arsenal have let Joe Willock go. The guy scores goals from midfield man. I really like him.
“I don’t understand that. Newcastle have done unbelievable well to get him by the way, I think he’s a really good talent.”
The 21-year-old scored eight goals in 14 games in a loan spell with the Magpies in the second half of last season, and has been linked with a return ever since arriving back in North London.
He was initially tipped to join in another loan deal, but the clubs have now agreed a permanent transfer as the Gunners look to free up some funds to add to the £75million spent so far this summer on Ben White, Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga.
But Ferdinand took his criticism of the Gunners further, saying: “With Arsenal, I know they’re building and Arteta is trying to build something and he’s setting the foundations there, but they’re in no man’s land.
“They’re not a threat to anybody. You don’t consider them a real threat at all and it’s not just the Arsenal that I played against with Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Martin Keown, Tony Adams, Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole.
“It’s just a very different time now for Arsenal. It’s sad to see because I really like Arsenal.”
    NEW MIDFIELDER EYED
Arteta is desperate to improve on last season’s dismal eighth place finish, but Ferdinand doesn’t believe the club is in any position to challenge at the top end of the table.
This season is the first time in 25 years the Gunners won’t be playing in Europe and Ferdinand thinks the club is different to what it was when he was playing against them, and not in a good way.
James Maddison has been linked with a move to Arsenal as Arteta looks to bring European football back to the Emirates, but Brendan Rodgers has warned the Gunners they will have to pay upwards of £100million to secure his services.
Martin Odegaard is said to be the Gunners’ top target as they seek a long-term replacement for Mesut Ozil in attacking midfield, but an injury to Toni Kroos means Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is open to keeping the 22-year-old Norwegian at the club.

A £42m move could be on the cards though, according to journalist Lucas Navarette.
The sale of Joe Willock recoups some of the £75m spent already this summer and possibly finances further transfers, but Ferdinand has publicly voiced his concern surrounding the sale of Willock.

Marcelo Bielsa to finally sign new Leeds contract this week – six-months after agreeing to extension

MARCELO BIELSA will FINALLY sign a new Leeds contract this week – six months after agreeing an extension. The Whites boss penned a one-year deal just a day before the first game of last season.
Marcelo Bielsa has been involved throughout pre-season and will sign a new deal before the season’s opener against Manchester UnitedCredit: PA
And Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear revealed the Argentine leaves it so late because of his “lack of interest in it”.
He said: “He’s ready. His contract isn’t ready but he’s ready. I think bar the contract we’re in great shape.
“It’ll be signed this week and announced to great excitement. It’s not even been discussed. The discussions are all around preparations, it really is a formality.
“We had a handshake probably six months ago and it really is just the details. Every day he’s talking to (director of football) Victor Orta, (owner) Andrea Radrizzani and myself but it’s all about preparations.
“Fundamentally it’s his lack of interest in it. There are some minor points that we discuss but it’s just getting his attention on it.
“He is just so fixated on the season and the preparations so we have minor points that occasionally come up when we get him to engage on it, but actually it’s much more around the line-ups for the games and the transfer window and that’s where his priorities are and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Leeds travel to arch rivals Manchester United on Saturday as they look to improve on their ninth place finish in their first season back in the top-flight.
As well as making winger Jack Harrison’s loan from Manchester City permanent, the only new additions have been left-back Junior Firpo from Barcelona and goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson from Valerenga.
    FANS PERPLEXED
And while some fans are “disappointed or perplexed” over their lack of activity, Kinnear insists everything is going to plan and admitted more signings are unlikely at present.
He told The Square Ball Podcast: “I know that some supporters have been, perplexed or disappointed by a perceived lack of activity this year, but that was always the plan.
“We wanted to build a squad in the year that we got promoted, that would last us two to three seasons and get us up and running.
“I think we ended up spending more than any other promoted team has spent to get to that position.
“There were two specific positions that we needed to address, which we did with the signing of Junior and Klaesson.

“The business we’ve done this summer hasn’t been restricted by finance. It’s been restricted by finding the right quality of player who Marcelo thinks will strengthen the squad and that’s really challenging because he really believes in the squad.
“If I was going to bet on it, I’d suggest there will be little movement between now and the end of the season but if you’d have asked me at the same time last season, I’d have said there wouldn’t be any movement and then we bought Raphinha.
“It can change very quickly but it has to be an exceptional opportunity and a player that can really move the team forward.”

Jack Grealish admits he teared up just like Lionel Messi did after leaving Aston Villa in £100m Man City transfer move

JACK GREALISH admitted he teared up like Lionel Messi as he bid farewell to his boyhood club Aston Villa.Grealish watched Messi break down as he left Barcelona after 20 years at the club.

And Grealish, 25, said he knew exactly how the Argentine legend felt.
Grealish said: “Everyone has seen the way Messi was at his final press conference and that is the exact way I felt myself. Before I left, I spoke to the team at the hotel and teared up a bit myself but I felt it was time for me to move on.
“I have been an Aston Villa fan since I was four years old, I had a season ticket when I was four, and went to the club when I was six so there will always be links. The big family I have, everyone is Villa fans. It has been a crazy few days.
“Something I haven’t experienced before, I have been at Aston Villa my whole life so this has been different. Going into a new changing room, I have not done that in my career before.
“It was one of the toughest decisions I have ever had to make. It came down to a few things. It was something I just thought I couldn’t turn down – the chance to play Champions League football, to challenge for trophies to play next to Kevin De Bruyne who I have looked up to for the last few years and to play for best manager in the world.
“I have always said I wanted to play Champions League football and I couldn’t do that at Villa this year.
“I am at a club here that has so much potential and is the most successful English side of the last 10 years. They showed so much faith in me and I felt it was the right time.”
It has taken just a couple of training sessions to convince him that Pep Guardiola can take his game to the next level.

He said: “You see what he has done with players here, the likes of Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden.
“A few years back people were saying Phil should go out on loan and now he has transformed him into one of the best talents in the world and Raheem is one of the best wingers in the world now.
“I think I am different to every player in this squad. The manager said I can play as a winger or an eight or number 10 or even a false nine. I feel like I can bring a lot to the team.
“I feel like he can take my game to the next level. I am going to be learning from him every single day. I can’t wait to learn from him. The way he is in training is unbelievable.
“Some of the tactics he has are just out of this world. Everyone here is so desperate to play under him, so Pep was obviously a massive factor in me coming here.”
Grealish believes he will be afforded a new freedom at City which he didn’t have at Villa.
BETTING SPECIAL – GET MO SALAH TO SCORE ONE OR MORE GOALS IN AUGUST AT 20/1
As their main threat opponents would try and mark him out the game, but you can’t do that with so much attacking threat throughout the City team.
He said: “Sometimes at Villa I did get doubled up on. Because there is so much talent in attacking areas it might be harder for teams to double up on me now. That will give me more space and freedom to attack players one-v-one.
“It can take time to find chemistry with these players but I feel after a few weeks I will have it with all the players.”
Of course he already knows some of them from his time with England and their exciting march to the European Championship final.
Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker all played their part.

Grealish is also thought to be earning a mind-boggling £200,000+ per-week at the EtihadCredit: Getty
Now they will be in the same team at club level and Grealish believes Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate can only benefit.
He said: “I spoke to these guys at England about Manchester City and they had nothing but good words to say but it takes time to build that chemistry. If you play with them week in week out you build that.
“I think that is something Gareth would probably like. We are all young and ‘Walks’ has the body of a 20-year-old the way he is so fit and fast.
“We are all striving for success with the national team and our clubs. I think that is something the England manager would love.”

Grealish was used as an impact substitute during the Euros but he wants a starting spot in next year’s World Cup and believes top performances for City will get him that.
He said: “I want to be a regular starter for England and I believe I can be. We have so much talent in the national team, people that didn’t even go to the Euros.
“But I feel if I am performing for Manchester City week in week out and playing in the Champions League and performing the way I can I feel it could set me up to have a brilliant future with the national team and try and start in the World Cup and in the qualifiers.”
It is fair to say Grealish is very much ready for the next step.

Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane are good starting transfers for Man Utd… but they need more to be Prem contenders

The signing of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho is a good start for United this season, but they need more quality in their squad to be title contenders. Varane, 28, has been granted a visa and has travelled to Manchester to complete his Red Devils move.
Man United could do with a ball-playing defensive midfielder in addition to Raphael Varane in their back fourCredit: Getty
The Frenchman is currently in quarantine and due to undergo his medical and sign his contract.
The France star is exactly what United need at the heart of the defence.
With Victor Lindelof proving to be unreliable, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was forced to search for a long-term partner to Harry Maguire.
BETTING SPECIAL – GET MO SALAH TO SCORE ONE OR MORE GOALS IN AUGUST AT 20/1
United always thought they would consider talent in Spain’s top-flight for their search.
However, few would have picked Varane, simply because it felt unlikely that he would leave Real Madrid.
Having watched the likes of Jules Koundé at Sevilla, and Pau Torres at Villarreal, the club have undoubtedly taken the best option in the serial Champions League winner.
Varane joins Jadon Sancho, 21, as Solskjaer’s second summer signing, but there are still question marks concerning other areas of the pitch.
    De Gea or Henderson?
Dean Henderson missed the training camp in Scotland after testing for COVID-19 in July.
The 24-year-old is still feeling the effects of the virus which means David De Gea is likely to start the Premier League season this week against Leeds United.
If this is the case, it is vital we do not see a situation like last season where the ‘keepers were rotated every couple of games.
For certain cup matches the understudy shot-stopper should get a run out, but not in the Champions League or Prem fixtures.
It makes you wonder, with Tom Heaton, 35, also there, if United would be open to selling either Henderson or De Gea.
For me, De Gea, 30, is still the better ‘keeper and should be the one to start behind Varane and Maguire.

    Central midfield
There have been rumours that Solskjaer will go for one defensive midfielder instead of the two he opted for last season.
As it stands, I don’t see this happening. Pre-season games have included two players there.
In addition, with players returning to the starting line-up at different times, due to the Euros, Copa America and injuries, it is likely Solskjaer will start the season with two in that position.

This could mean a welcome back to Scott McTominay and Fred
Both players are solid out of possession, but struggle when they’re expected to pass forward through the lines.
This situation could change if United signs a ball-playing defensive midfielder, but some of the squad will have to be sold first.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta raves about ‘really good’ Ben White after £50m signing’s solid showing in Tottenham defeat

ARSENAL boss Mikel Arteta was very pleased with £50million man Ben White’s first start in a Gunners shirt. The 23-year-old played just over an hour in the 1-0 defeat to Spurs on Sunday, but the score was level when White was replaced by Calum Chambers.

And on Ben White’s performance, the Arsenal boss said: “He was really good. But again, it’s a match where they haven’t played.
“Some of them they’ve [only] trained for four or five days.
“So you can still see and we didn’t want to risk many more, but it was a good start.
“To lose any game [and] to lose against them obviously even more.
“Take the positives and learn and for the next time be more prepared and better.

Arteta will be hoping that the two-cap England international will help the Gunners improve on last season’s dismal eighth placed finish that saw the North London club miss out on European football for the first time in 25 years.
And Ben White is one of three Arsenal signings so far this summer, joining Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga at the Emirates ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, with a combined £75million spent on the three of them.
White’s £50million move from Brighton makes him Arsenal’s third most expensive player of all time, with only the £57.4million paid for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and £72million fee for Nicolas Pepe topping that number.
Arsenal though are still said to be looking at bringing in some new faces before the end of the transfer window.
With Joe Willock on his way out of the club in a reported £22milllion move to Newcastle, funds are being freed up as the Gunners target an attacking midfielder as a long-term replacement for Mesut Ozil.
James Maddison has been linked with a switch to North London, but any potential move is likely to cost the Gunners £100million according to Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers.
But it’s former loanee Martin Odegaard who remains top of Arsenal’s wish list, and according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners are still ‘keeping an eye’ on Odegaard’s situation.
Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has also been linked with a move to Arsenal as Mikel Arteta looks for a shot-stopper to provide competition with Bernd Leno for a starting spot between the sticks.

And the Portuguese is said to want to make Argentina international Martinez his fourth signing of the summer.
The Times claim Spurs have agreed a staggering £60million deal for the forward.
But Martinez’s rep, Alejandro Camano, insists his client has no intention of leaving Milan.
He said: “Lautaro is happy at Inter and in Italy. His decision is to stay”
Camano added: “He’s never gonna have a fight with Inter to leave the club. Never. Lautaro’s an Inter player and he’s happy in Italy.”
Martinez has been a revelation for Inter since penning a five-year deal at the San Siro in July 2018.
The Bahia Blanca native has scored an impressive 49 goals and provided 20 assists in 149 appearances for Simone Inzaghi side.
And according to The Times, Tottenham plan to play the Martinez alongside skipper Harry Kane, whose future at the club is currently up in the air.
I want to clarify that I would never, and have never, refused to trainHarry Kane
England international Kane is eager to leave the club for pastures new, with Manchester City his preferred destination.
Spurs, however, have no intention of selling their talismanic striker this summer.
The acquisition of Lautaro could very well be the club’s attempt to convince Kane to snub the riches of City for another season.
Reports this week claimed Kane refused to attend training in order to push through a move to City.
But the England skipper rubbished that suggestion in a lengthy social media post, which read: “While I won’t go into the specifics of the situation, I want to clarify that I would never, and have never, refused to train.
“I will be returning to the club tomorrow, as planned.

Man City ‘set to offer Bernardo Silva in swap transfer for Harry Kane but Raheem Sterling does not want Tottenham move’

WITH the Jack Grealish deal done and dusted Manchester City now have England captain Harry Kane firmly in their sights. And rather than pay the £150million asking price set by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy Manchester City are prepared to offer Bernardo Silva in a player-plus-cash swap deal.

According to the Daily Mail Pep Guardiola is willing to part ways with Bernardo Silva if it brings Kane to the Etihad, but City are prepared to miss out on their target if Spurs hold out for £150million.
The Premier League champions have already submitted a £100million offer for Kane – matching the fee they paid to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa.
But City are not prepared to pay more than £130million for Kane, although they are willing to include Bernardo Silva in any possible switch.

And the arrival of Jack Grealish will only further limit the amount of minutes on the pitch for Silva.
Raheem Sterling has previously been rumoured as a possible bargaining tool in an attempt to prise Kane away from Spurs, but the 26-year-old is not willing to be involved in any deal with the North London club not offering Champions League football.
The England star’s future at the Etihad is rumoured to be still in doubt though, with Sterling not enjoying his last twelve months in Manchester.
Manchester City have been strongly linked with a move for Kane all summer, with the 28-year-old publicly stating his desire to leave Spurs back in May.

And the England captain only rejoined his Tottenham teammates at their training ground on Saturday – five days after he was due to return from holiday following an extended break after England’s Euro 2020 campaign.
He will now isolate at Spurs’ training ground for five days in their on-site accommodation, meaning he will miss Spurs’ Premier League opener against none other than Manchester City.
The 28-year-old will train on his own as he completes his isolation, but denies purposely missing training.
He took to to Instagram to publicly state he “would never, and have never, refused to train.”
But with rumours continue to swirl surrounding Kane’s future, City may return with a follow-up bid to smash the British and Premier League transfer window for the second time in the same transfer window. More

European Super League future plans to be scuppered by Boris Johnson with law changes preventing football breakaway

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to deliver on his plans to introduce laws to stop a breakaway European Super League in the future. Documents are being readied by Government officials that would make it legal for the FA and Premier league to bring harsh action on clubs backing the resurrection of the European Super League, according to the Telegraph.

The news of a proposed European Super League rocked the footballing world in April as six Premier League clubs announced they would be part of a breakaway competition that was provisionally set to start at the beginning of the 2022-23 season.
And with rumours of a revival for the league, Government officials are drawing up legislation that would allow the FA and Premier League to take tough action on any club involved in such a plot.
The news comes as there are fears that an ongoing case at the European Court of Justice could lead to Uefa being forced to drop its proposed disciplinary action against the clubs responsible.

An order from a Madrid court favours the clubs still involved, and with that there are rumours that the Spanish sides still keen on the plot are set to give the plans another go if they escape harsh action.
The Premier League announced that a £25 million fine and 30 point deduction would greet any team involved in a similar plot, and the legislation set to be announced by Boris Johnson would prevent any court from being able to overturn that threat.
Work permit rules have already been changed by the Government which stop foreign players from joining any English club involved in a Super League, but these plans are set to take a further step forward in preventing any of the ‘Big Six’ from taking part in plans of the same nature.
Manchester United, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea were all involved in the plot alongside some of the biggest clubs in Europe until all of the so called ‘Big Six’ pulled out of the plans after the backlash they received.
Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan also backed the idea of a European Super League, but now the UK Prime Minister is working to ensure a similar plot will never happen again.

The news backs up Boris Johnson’s claim that he would “drop a legislative bomb to stop it” from going ahead, and now he seems set to deliver on his promise.
The Telegraph also report that Johnson is hoping his plans will gain support from the Union of European Football Associations, and boost a joint bid by the UK and Ireland to host the 2030 World Cup.
And according to reports the Spanish clubs are still said to be in favour of the Super League, which damages a joint bid by Spain and Portugal to rival the UK and Ireland to host the 2030 World Cup.
Boris Johnson is hoping that his plans both forever stop the possibility of a future Super League, as well as one-upping Spain and Portugal in the UK and Ireland’s joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup.
