West Ham boss David Moyes has ‘no regrets’ after bringing on Mark Noble to take late penalty against Man Utd

DAVID MOYES took the fall for the penalty howler which cost West Ham a point – and finally ended David De Gea’s spot-kick hoodoo.Moyes brought on Mark Noble in stopping time just to convert from 12-years and seal a thrilling draw, only to miss from the spot for the first time in almost five years.

United keeper De Gea’s brilliant save to his left saw him become the hero and end a run of 40 penalties without saving one for club and country, also stretching back to 2016.
Hammers boss Moyes said: “Do I regret it? Not at all because Mark Noble is one of the best penalty kick takers we’ve got.
“We had time to think about it, time to make that choice. My choice, my decision.
“That is what happens in management, you have to make big decisions. Sometimes they go and sometimes they don’t. Maybe the job is for some people and not for others, that is why you have to take the decisions.
“We had a really good penalty kick taker sitting on the bench, I think I would have been more disappointed in myself if I hadn’t made the decision.
“Because of his record I thought he was the one who would be most suited to taking it.”

Ironically only last month Moyes had spoken of how he would love to be able to use Noble as his specialist penalty taker in the same way special teams are used in NFL.
He said on August 23: “It’s a pity the Premier League isn’t like American Football where we could bring Mark off the bench just to take a penalty as he’s our specialist.
“He’s incredible and he keeps telling me he’s got one of the best records in Europe for conversion rates.”
De Gea admitted he first thought he would be facing Declan Rice after Luke Shaw’s stoppage time handball – only to see the Hammers make the rush sub and Noble stride onto the pitch.
He said: “It was the last minute, I made the save. A massive three points for us.
“Going through my head was ‘save the ball’.”

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he feared letting two points slip away when the late penalty was given, after Jesse Lingard had returned to East London to hand them the lead just two minutes from time.
Solskjaer said: “I’ve seen Mark Nobles on so many penalties. You did feel down and out and you expected him to come on and you’d only get a point
But I believe in David. He saved one against Crystal Palace last year and it got retaken because he was just off his line.
“He is a different man. He asked to come back early from pre-season and he wanted to show how good he is. He is so focussed and he has saved two points for us today.”
In a thrilling game, United came from a goal down through Said Benrahma to claim the win thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo and then Lingard’s stunning late strike.
The role of ref Martin Atkinson and VAR was under huge scrutiny, with Ronaldo denied two spot-kicks which boss Solskjaer insisted should have been given.

And West Ham also felt hard done by when Atkinson ruled Tomas Soucek had fouled Aaron Wan-Bissaka when the United defender appeared to clean out the Czech midfielder in the area.
Solskjaer said: “The first and the last are stonewall and you cannot even argue against them. The lad puts his foot out and Cristiano runs straight and he is fouled.
“The last one – Paul had a foul against Kurt Zouma. He did not touch him but he went over him so why is Cristano’s third appeal not a penalty?
“Hopefully it will not be ‘Cristiano is never going to be a penalty’.
“I am so happy for Jesse. He had a tough evening on Tuesday but he was knocked down and worked hard again. He has been the same bright positive lad and what a goal. Good turn and great finish.”

O’Hara claims Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and City will dominate Prem for FIFTEEN YEARS.. but fans disagree

JAMIE O’HARA reckons the Premier League’s four biggest clubs could be set to rule the roost in the top-flight for years to come.  And the talkSPORT pundit expects Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Man City to maintain their iron grip on the division’s top four spots.
Jamie O’Hara believes Man United, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool will dominate the Prem’s top four spotsCredit: Rex
Man United moved to second in the table after beating West Ham
However, some Prem fans have a different view with one describing the prediction as “shortsighted”.
O’Hara, 34, was talking on Sky Sports ahead of Tottenham’s London derby duel with Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea.
And the commentator said on Sky: “They’ve gone to another level these teams now.
“They’re too good. They’re too powerful. The players they can draw in.’
“I can’t see a team outside of the top 4 teams winning the Premier League for the next ten to fifteen years.
When quizzed on whether David Moyes’ high-flying Hammers could repeat Leicester City’s 2015-16 feat of winning the title, O’Hara was adamant it was more likely to be a top-four club.

The Irons, who face  Man United in the Carabao Cup before an away league clash with Leeds, are currently four points off top spot
O’Hara added: “West Ham are doing great, they’re doing brilliantly.
“But they’ll finish fifth. That’s the reality that I think we are looking at now.
“I don’t believe we are going to see a team that can get anywhere near this top four for the next 10 years. I really don’t.
Teams like Leicester and Spurs can’t catch themJamie O’Hara
“I can’t see someone outside of them winning the Premier League. These teams are too strong.
“Look at the players they can get. Look at the money they can spend on players. No one can touch them.
“Look I love it but the teams like Leicester and Spurs can’t catch them.”
Some fans took to Twitter to share their views on O’Hara’s bold claim.
While one described Leicester’s title win as “a blip”, another reckoned O’Hara’s prediction was “very short-sighted”.
One supporter reckoned many things can happen in the Prem in 15 years.

Meanwhile, another suggested a salary cap should be introduced to “give more teams a chance.
Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Man City have dominated the Prem’s top four positions for the past two seasons.
And some pundits and Prem gaffers including West Ham boss David Moyes are tipping United to win their first title since 2013.

The former Red Devils chief said: “They’ve got a good balance of youth and experience in the squad.
“I think Ole’s been given a really good chance to build a squad and a team and I think he’s doing a good job.
“He’s got a team that is more than capable this year of winning the Premier League.”

Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes FORCE Jesse Lingard to celebrate with Man Utd fans after refusal against West Ham

The 28-year-old shone for the Hammers when he joined on loan in January and respectfully put his hands to air after his strike on Sunday.
But United team-mates Ronaldo and Fernandes were not having any of it, forcing Lingard to run towards the jubilant away fans and celebrate his decisive effort.
Lingard’s future at United has been uncertain with reports on Saturday suggesting he could be one of seven sold in a January clear out.
He was at fault in United’s midweek Champions League defeat by Young Boys after his disastrous backpass was intercepted by Jordan Siebatcheu.
Lingard spent the second half of last season in fine form on loan at West Ham, who were eager to bring him back to the capital in a permanent deal this summer.
But the England man broke the hearts of those home fans on Sunday with a superb strike.

Taking a pass from fellow sub Nemanja Matic in his path, Lingard unleashed a sublime right-footer into the top corner of Lukascz Fabianski’s goal.
His efforts to show respect were thwarted by the ecstatic Ronaldo and Fernandes and a smile could soon be seen breaking out on the goalscorer’s face.
United fans on social media hailed the mentality of their Portuguese duo.
‘Yellovflash’ wrote on Twitter: “The best part of Lingard’s goal was Ronaldo and Bruno pushing him to celebrate infront of fans. That is the winner’s mentality no room for sentiment, especially coming back from making huge error last week.”
‘Truly345’ wrote: “Seeing Ronaldo celebrate with Lingard brings tears to my eyes.”
‘Xx_novio’ added: “Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes forcing Jesse Lingard to celebrate his goal. By far the greatest atonement we could have ever asked for.”

The Portuguese forward went theatrically to ground, having clipped the knee of the defending Czech.
Ref Martin Atkinson was on the scene and immediately signalled no penalty.
The decision left Ronaldo fuming as he looked to add a second to his first-half goal.
His mood was not helped as the game went into injury time after he was denied a second penalty shout.
Atkinson again signalled no spotkick after Ronaldo was tripped by Kurt Zouma.
The decisions mattered not in terms of United’s victory after Jesse Lingard put the visitors 2-1 up with 90 seconds remaining.

But with Ronaldo having notched four goals in his three appearances since his return to the Red Devils after 12 years away, the Portuguese was desperate to continue his fine start.
United fans were quick to back their star on social media and questioned Atkinson’s decisions.
‘UTDTrey’ wrote on Twitter: “Let it be known that “finished” Ronaldo was robbed of 2 penalties today and he still has 4 goals in 3 games. Unstoppable.”
‘iLatif_’ said: “Two Zouma fouls on Cristiano Ronaldo but they weren’t given. Two penalties for Manchester United smh.”

Fans fume as Walker is cleared of red card and penalty by VAR against Southampton as Lineker slams ‘bizarre’ call

BEMUSED football fans blasted a VAR decision that saw Kyle Walker escape a sending off and Southampton denied penalty. The incident during Saturday’s 0-0 draw at the Etihad prompted angry reactions from fans on social media.
Kyle Walker and Man City were let off by a controversial VAR decision

One incredulous fan described VAR as “being on vacation” during the controversial incident.
Walker looked set to be given his marching orders in the second half after he brought down Southampton striker Adam Armstrong in the box.
And for a moment it looked as if the visitors were in with a chance of gaining a surprise lead against champions.
However, the Three Lions full-back stayed on the pitch after appearing to argue his case with referee Jon Moss.
Moss later opted to overturn the penalty decision after viewing a replay of the incident on a pitchside screen.

This prompted an irate reaction on Twitter from viewers, supporters and pundits with Gary Lineker branding the choice to overturn the pen as “bizarre”.
In a post to his eight million followers, Lineker wrote: “Extraordinary turnaround by VAR. Walker gives away a penalty and gets a red card.
“With double jeopardy, the red was an error, but to turn over the decision of a penalty is bizarre.
“You could argue whether it was a penalty, but having given it, it was definitely not a glaring error.
Meanwhile, one observer on felt Walker’s challenge on Armstrong was an “obvious foul”.
And another described the referee’s choice to overturn the spot-tick as “madness”.
However other watchers reckoned they could see VAR made the decision to overturn the pen.
One viewer suggested that VAR probably got the decision “right” with Walker making a “remarkable recovery” to “get in front of Armstrong”.

Dean Smith later confirmed that McGinn felt ‘dizzy’ after two incidents where he was hit in the head.
Smith told Sky Sports: “He is OK, I think it was the early corner where Tyrone [Mings] got the header.
“He got a whack on the head, I think he clashed heads with [Michael] Keane and he just felt a bit groggy. He said to me before the first break ‘If I feel any more dizzy I am going to have to give you a shout’.
“He got another whack, he felt he was fine to carry on. After that he made another run after about 25 minutes, there was a break in play, he came over, that’s when he alerted me to it and I told the doctor, that’s why we got it done then.
“You are guided by the player, he didn’t express concussion symptoms as soon as he had done it. Just a whack on the head, there was another one later on that he certainly did tell us.”
