CARDIFF have retired the No7 shirt worn by the late Peter Whittingham.The legendary Bluebirds midfielder tragically died in March 2020 at the age of 35 having sustained head injuries following a fall at the Park Hotel in Barry.

A coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death as football was left in shock at the loss of the ex-England Under-21 and Aston Villa star.
Whittingham cost Cardiff just £350,000 from Villa in 2007 and went on to help Malky Mackay’s side win the Championship and reach the Premier League for the first time in the 2012/2013 season.
And the stylish playmaker has been honoured after 459 games and 98 goals between 2007-17 which puts him seventh on the club’s all-time appearance table and ninth on the scorers’ list.
Whittingham then spent a year at Blackburn where he ended his career.

At the time of Whittingham’s death, Cardiff team-mate Jay Bothroyd called on his former club to retire his shirt number and the Welsh outfit have now acted on the eve of the new season.
A Cardiff statement read: “The club has taken the opportunity at this juncture to retire the number 7 shirt in honour of Peter Whittingham.”
The Championship club are planning a memorial game for Whittingham in November and a flag is also displayed in his honour at every home match.
Cardiff have also appointed Joe Ralls as their new captain to replace Sean Morrison, who is recovering from a serious knee injury.

“I was confident if we made certain improvements and got more quality we’d have a good season.”
With so many new additions, Hughes will be hoping his team can gel quickly — although he did manage to get the bulk of his transfer business done early.
Typically, in League Two, clubs do most of their business later in the summer window.
And the Bradford boss said: “I was more comfortable trying to get as many players across the line in pre-season and give them time to gel — rather than what other clubs in this division usually do and conduct their business towards the end of the window. It’s important to hit the ground running.”
The Bradford boss brought in his former Wales assistant Glyn Hodges as No2 and recruited Stephen Gent as head of recruitment. Both know the EFL well — Gent from his time working in recruitment for Middlesbrough and Hodges, who managed AFC Wimbledon.

Hughes’ managerial career has also taken in Wales, Blackburn, Fulham, QPR and Stoke — but he has been out of the game since being sacked by Southampton three-and-a-half years ago.
But the Welshman found further opportunities scarce and the Bradford interest only came after his agent and son Alex sent the club a speculative email.
And incredibly this chance was almost missed because his message ended up in the club’s SPAM box — which finally got spotted by chief executive Ryan Sparks.
His appointment has certainly caught the imagination of the Bantams faithful with the club breaking their League Two season-ticket sales record with more than 14,000 being snapped up.
He said: “It’s not just the amount of season tickets the club sold but the welcome me and my assistant Glyn Hodges have received is unprecedented. I’ve been at clubs where they’ve wanted me out before I’ve even turned up so it makes a pleasant change.”
Their average attendance last season of 15,582 was higher than 11 clubs in the Championship and only four teams attracted more in League One.

Hughes said: “This is what excites me. We’ve a huge fan base at this level, we’re the best supported club in League Two.
“With that comes expectations. I don’t have a problem with that because I’ve always worked with expectations at previous clubs and that comes with anticipation as well.
People demand we have a good season.
“We’ll work with that but raising expectations has always been difficult because you can disappoint people — but we’re aiming to do something that hasn’t happened for years, which is to get out of this league.”
Bradford have previously been something of a basket case and are in League Two for a reason — namely mis-management that saw them rapidly decline after their two seasons in the Premier League from 1999 to 2001.
This is their TENTH season out of 16 in the bottom tier and Hughes is their seventh permanent manager in just four years.
Asked if he is at Bradford for the long haul, he said: “I haven’t come here on a whim. I’m here to make this club successful.

Jesus completed a £45million move from Manchester City to Arsenal last month.
And the 25-year-old has lavished praise on his new team-mates, with one in particular really surprising the Brazil international.
Speaking on Podpah Podcast, Jesus revealed the mentality of the squad ahead of the new season, but when the name of compatriot Martinelli came up he was full of praise.

He said: “It was a bit strange to have to take the penalty but that happens in football sometimes.
“It’s difficult to win things, I think teams are improving a lot, football is very tough I think every team is very difficult to beat.
“I’ve been in lots of situations in the club where we don’t win as much as we want but I love the club, I hope in the years that are coming we will try to win something big for the club because I think we deserve it.”
Speaking to the media out here in Perth, De Gea was asked if he ever wonders how things might have turned out for him had his proposed transfer to Real Madrid on summer transfer deadline day in 2015 gone through.

Indeed the Spaniard, who has a year left on his contract with the option for a further year, would love to finish his career at Old Trafford but desperately wants more medals.
He said: “I would be really happy to be here for as long as they want because I want to be here for more years…
“If they let me stay here I will stay here, for sure. I’m really comfortable, really happy and hopefully, before I leave we can win something.

“One or two or three titles and, try to win the Champions League, try to fight for the Champions League as well, cups too. We have to fight for everything.
“A good point to start is to say like, ‘guys we cannot do the same as we did last season because it was a disaster’. I really hope we’re gonna play much better.”
The dominance of Manchester City and Liverpool at the minute makes that aspiration to win a title a big ask.
De Gea added: “Two or three teams are in a very good level, playing very well, very consistent, so we need to try to get closer to them.”
There is a genuine feeling within the United camp that under new boss Erik Ten Hag things will start to change for the better.
Three wins from three on the pre-season tour and scoring 11 goals in the process have certainly brought confidence back to the players.
De Gea said: “I feel good energy in the team, more positivity, more focus.
“We are really improving under the new manager, things are going really well, we are working really hard as a team, that’s the most important thing.
“He’s very intense, everything he says is fully focused, 100 per cent. In training, he brings new things, new thoughts, so we need to adapt to him.
“But we have shown already in these three games that we are pressing high, we win the ball, we want to keep the ball, dictate, we want to lead the game. So I think we are doing well, we are working really hard.”
