Sky Sports hit by poor Championship viewing figures and could axe games in new broadcast deal

SKY TV are anxiously eyeing their viewing figures before sorting out a new contract with the EFL.And that could mean the broadcaster offers LESS money and wants FEWER live games when the next deal starts in 2024.
Sky will hope Swansea vs Cardiff today can pull in big viewing figuresCredit: Getty
Insiders reveal that numbers have been low this season, with the highest coming in the opening match between Huddersfield and Burnley.
The exact audience sizes are kept quiet but sources claim the largest was only around 600,000.
There will be rival bids for television rights when the next package starts, with that contract due to be sorted out next season.
And the Sky appetite for spending big money on a lot of games may depend on the viewing figures over the coming months.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Sky have had a bad season to cover the flagship Championship as there are no huge clubs at that level with big fan bases.
The days of Leeds, Villa, Fulham and Nottingham Forest swelling viewing figures have gone with their promotion to the top flight.
And a general lowering of the standard and lack of ‘star’ quality players makes it a hard sell for the TV company.
Sky also made a mistake by introducing 8pm midweek kick-offs and even Saturday nights for some games, tinkering that has not made any positive difference.

Fury’s ‘Gypsy King’ brand is embroidered on The Shrimps’ home and away shorts for the current campaign.
He has earned tens of millions for his trilogy bouts with Deontay Wilder and his Wembley win over Dillian Whyte.

And he has used that to develop close links with his local team – who sit six points from safety – by investing in their training facilities as well as the sponsorship deal.
Now the unbeaten boxing star, who is a proud Manchester United fan, has announced that he wants to support them even further by BUYING the bottom of the table outfit.

He made the shock revelation on talkSPORT while speaking to hosts Jim White and Simon Jordan, the former owner of Premier League side Crystal Palace.
The unbeaten boxer said: “Quick question, I’m thinking about buying Morecambe Football Club, they’re in League One at the moment.
“So I was thinking I invest X amount of millions in them.”
Jordan interrupted: “By invest you mean throw it at them, invest is the wrong term.”

Fury replied: “Yeah, basically throw it at them and keep them going up.
“I’ve been offered to buy Morecambe Football Club.
“I own all the training facilities anyway and the training gym. So who knows? You might be looking at a football club owner.”
Jordan then asked: “You know how to make a small fortune in football?”
But the ever-sharp Fury already knew the answer and replied: “Start off with a bigger one! It’s the same as being a boxing promoter.”
The Manchester United supporting potential Morecambe owner will find himself at the home of Tottenham Hotspur in December.
That is the venue for his latest fight against Derek Chisora.
It’s also been announced that Daniel Dubois will fight on the undercard.
The Gypsy King announced the show on social media on Thursday morning with a picture of the fight card.
And he added: “LET’S HAVE IT THEN DEL BOY!!!! SEE YOU DECEMBER 3RD LONDON! @SpursOfficial @DerekWarChisora.”

Ex-Celtic ace Scott Sinclair finally finds new club as he joins up with former Rangers man Joey Barton at Bristol Rovers

SCOTT SINCLAIR has completed a career fairytale move by re-signing for his first club, Bristol Rovers. The ex-Celtic star, 33, has been without a club since being released by Preston North End at the end of last season.
Scott Sinclair enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at CelticCredit: Kenny Ramsay – The Sun Glasgow
Sinclair, who has been at 14 clubs throughout his career, will link up with two former Rangers flops at Rovers – and one of them will be his manager.
Joey Barton is currently boss of the League One outfit while Jordan Rossiter is one of the team’s regular starters in midfield.
Sinclair, who was part of Celtic’s Treble Treble-winning dynasty, left the Hoops in January 2020 as first team opportunities dried up under then-boss Neil Lennon.
He scored 62 goals in 167 games for the Glasgow giants.
Sinclair, whose glamorous Wag Helen Flanagan played Rosie Webster in Coronation Street, moved to Preston and spent the next 18 months with the Championship club, making 85 appearances and scoring 14 goals.
After being let go by the Deepdale club in the summer he began training with former club Chelsea in a bid to maintain his fitness.
Sinclair originally signed for the Blues in 2005, who spotted him as a teenager playing for Bristol Rovers.
The winger had joined Rovers at the age of nine and became their second-youngest ever debutant at 15 years and 77 days old in a match against Leyton Orient in 2004.

He failed to crack the first team at Stamford Bridge and was loaned out numerous times, taking in spells at Plymouth Argyle, QPR, Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace, Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic.
He played 18 times in the Premier League for Wigan and that prompted promotion-chasing Swansea to swoop for him and he was a hit in the Championship, scoring 19 times in 43 games for the Swans.
Sinclair was a regular for the Welsh side in the Prem and Manchester City paid £8million for him in 2012.
But once again he found himself on the fringes of first-team action and he was loaned out again, to West Brom and Aston Villa.
The Villans took him on permanently and it was after a year at Villa Park that he joined Celtic under Brendan Rodgers.

EFL considering AXING 3pm TV blackout with Facebook, Netflix, Google, Apple and Amazon keen on buying rights

The EFL’s current TV rights deal expires at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Just like the Premier League, there is a blanket ban on broadcasting all 3pm matches on Saturdays.
But chiefs are now ready to lift the veil and make every single game in the Championship, League One and League Two available for live TV.
The EFL currently pockets £119million each year through its contract with Sky.

But chiefs reckon that figure could soar to an annual figure of £200m by allowing other parties to join in the action.
The Mail claims invitations will soon be sent to Netflix, Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Google regarding future rights.
The mega-names will be asked to send proposals as the EFL explores its options.
But there will be no fixed contract as the plan is to televise every single match from the 2024/25 campaign.

The EFL’s decision is set to be welcomed by most sides, with just two Championship games currently shown each weekend.
But the move would first have to be approved by the FA.
And they in turn will then have to go to Uefa before the idea gets the green light.
Should the EFL succeed, it could open the door for some in the Premier League to push for a similar broadcasting deal. More

Burnley winger Manuel Benson knows what it takes to beat Championship bullies as he has already done it in BASKETBALL

MANUEL BENSON knows what it takes to beat the Championship bullies because he has already done it in BASKETBALL.Burnley’s new Belgian winger was given a warm welcome to English football by Watford’s Hassane Kamara hacking him down three times in the opening 10 minutes of his debut at Vicarage Road.
Manuel Benson is working on beating the Championship bully boys
Burnley ace Manuel Benson has been a target for some meaty challenges
And ever since he has been a constant target for opponents who keep trying to take lumps out of him in a bid to stop his attacking prowess.
But Benson, 25, signed from Royal Antwerp, knows it comes with the territory of playing in the second tier — where defenders are safe from VAR scrutiny and referees let a lot more tackles go than they do in the Premier League or Europe.
However the Belgian insists he must be smart like he is with the brown ball.
He said: “I love basketball and enjoy playing with friends. I’m not the tallest or most powerful on court and, just like here in the Championship, they keep fouling me.
    READ MORE EFL NEWS
“I learned to be smarter and get some distance because they’re all so tall. I found ways around it — and will do exactly the same in football.”
Benson is lucky to have two fantastic tutors in how to beat the bully boys.
His Clarets boss Vincent Kompany was of course a world-class centre-half at Manchester City who would lick his lips at the prospect of giving a player of Benson’s size some rough-house treatment.
And assistant-manager Craig Bellamy was also an attacking player that was not the biggest but certainly made a living out of out-foxing centre-halves.

The pair have even put on training games where they have instructed defenders to mete out some tough treatment to the Belgian.
Benson said: “We’ve been working on it because it’s something I must adapt to.
“It’s tough because there is no VAR so everything is based on the referee’s decision. It’s something that comes with football and I must learn to be smarter.
“Craig Bellamy has been giving me a lot of help. He has told me to be one step ahead of the defenders and don’t let them get even close to making the tackle.
“You can leave space between you and the defender but, because of the way I play, I sometimes like to be close to the defender so you just have to accept this is part of football.
“We’ve been working hard on it in training and some of the guys have been fouling me. With lots of practice, I can implement what I learn in both training and games.
“In that first game at Watford I thought surely it’ll ease off but it didn’t happen. I got distracted a little because of it but each week and game that passes, I’m getting smarter.”
Benson admits that some of the tackles he sees are “scary” and “dangerous”.
He said: “Most times defenders don’t want to go for a foul. They’re just going for the ball and trying to be smart. But as an attacking player, you always feel more at a disadvantage because you move a little bit faster and when the challenge comes in, it can be quite scary sometimes. It can be dangerous.
“Because we tend to be quicker on balls and move to situations when the challenge comes in, we must think sometimes to hold a bit in.

Manuel Benson is enjoying life at Burnley since moving from Royal Antwerp
Manuel Benson with our man Justin Allen at Burnley’s training ground
“Maybe, because there is no VAR, defenders can afford to be a bit more ruthless.
“I don’t want to complain though. I’ll keep working on being smarter and hopefully the referees will eventually see the clear fouls.”
But the fact that having no VAR in the Championship is not to Benson’s advantage, he is glad that the EFL have not introduced it.
He said: “For me, it’s not necessary because I like the atmosphere it brings to the stadium. It’s better for the game that decisions can be made in a split second.
“I’m more old-school and like how football used to be. I’m not waving my hands about complaining. I must adapt.”
Benson revealed he religiously watched Match of the Day back home and Burnley were a team he tuned into because  ex-Belgium international Steve Defour used to strut his stuff at Turf Moor.
Although, the winger concedes, he probably would not have joined the club under former boss Sean Dyche — must preferring the dominant possession-based game that Kompany has implemented at the club.
He said: “There were too many long balls and for me that’s not really football. It’s not something I’d enjoy.
“When I was at Antwerp, it was all about going deep and playing the long ball. I had to adapt to that but couldn’t reach my best level.”
The winger caught Kompany’s eye when they played against each other in 2019. The City legend was in the last season of his playing career for Anderlecht and Benson came on as a 55th-minute sub for Antwerp in a 0-0 draw.
And when Kompany was managing Antwerp last season, Benson caught his eye again with two good performances.
The Burnley ace said: “I hurt him a few times but they also did beat us in one of the games. It’s great when someone like him remembers you and when he called me to come here my mind was made up.
“First, Vincent was someone I would watch play for the national team and City. Everyone knows he was a world-class defender. Also he is Belgian and I’ve admired his transition to a coach.
“He’s a young manager who, because he hasn’t been out of playing for so long, still has a strong feeling for the game. Although he is the manager, he communicates calmly and it never feels as though when he speaks that it’s coming from so high up. It all feels like he is level with us and that’s really nice.
“This is an important time in my career. I want to progress. I want to play in the Premier League and still have ambitions to play for Belgium, even if it takes until I am 32 to get there!”
    Read More on The Sun
Benson has revealed that apart from Turf Moor, the only place he has visited so far in Burnley is Tesco.
He said: “I’ve been to Manchester, which is nice, and in Burnley only Tesco. I haven’t got a car at the moment so that has made travelling around a bit more difficult but I am just about to move into a place and my mum and fiancee will be joining me soon. So hopefully I can see more soon.” More
