Wigan in talks with Waterford over making John Sheridan new boss – even with financially-crippled club in administration

WIGAN are in talks with John Sheridan about quitting Irish side Waterford and becoming their new boss.
Sheridan could return to England to take charge of the League One team despite the fact they are in administration.

Wigan are in talks with John Sheridan about quitting Irish side Waterford and becoming their new boss
Caretaker Leam Richardson wanted Simon Grayson to join but he has yet to admit and the chase has now turned to Sheridan.
Sheridan is nearing the end of his contract in Ireland and could take the chance of getting back into the English game – even for a short spell.
Wigan go to Ipswich for the opening game in League One with just ONE player left from the starting eleven against Fulham in their last match.
The cash-strapped club are in dire straits after administrators were summoned in July.

It resulted in a 12-point penalty and relegation from the Championship to League One.
They are desperately looking for new owners to reverse their fortunes.
But in the meantime, a Supporters’ Club Crowdfunder page has been set up to raise cash and save Wigan from going under.
Former Lactics favourites including Roberto Martinez, Reece James and James McClean have all stepped forward with donations.

And it emerged Victor Moses contributed £20,000 to the fundraiser in a touching gesture.
Wigan tweeted: “Thank you Victor Moses. Victor has pledged a significant donation to Save Our Club!”
The Chelsea wing-back, 29, starred for Wigan between 2010 and 2012.
And after making an anonymous donation on Tuesday, the Wigan Athletic Supporters’ Club wanted to make sure he received recognition.

Wigan Athletic will always have a special place in my heart.I have so many incredible memories from my time there and the people of Wigan&everyone associated with the club have always been so good to me and my family. We must do all we can to protect the future of this great club. pic.twitter.com/MgWALX35Nh

Chairperson Caroline Molyneux said: “Wow – what can we say?
“When Victor got in touch to say he wanted to help by donating such a substantial amount, I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing – it’s such an incredible gesture.
“Victor wanted to make the donation and remain anonymous but we simply had to make sure he gets the recognition he deserves.
“Victor’s contribution has taken us past £650,000 and to within £100,000 of our next target of £750,000.”

Behind the scenes at Cambridge United and English football’s return of fans: Portaloos, spray paint and EFL hopes

SITTING IN the stands watching fans rise and cheer as their team emerges from the tunnel, Cambridge United director Godric Smith cannot help but put his feelings into words.
“God that’s fantastic isn’t it,” he blurts – the emotions of a man given the unenviable task by the EFL to help get English fans back into stadiums.

The U’s are part of a project with the EFL and Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) that looked at ways of keeping fans safe from the virus.
And on Wednesday night, Cambridge United staged the country’s first competitive fixture with fans since lockdown stopped football in its tracks in March.
It is one of two test runs planned for Abbey Stadium this week – the next coming on Saturday with a restricted attendance of 2,500 for the League Two clash with Carlisle.
But the first – a 2-0 win over Fulham U21s in the EFL Trophy with a restricted attendance of 1,000 – was of much more significance.

Smith admitted pre-match: “This isn’t the most important match we are going to play all season.
“But arguably, it will be one of the most important matches for football in this country for a while.
“We put ourselves forward to help the EFL. It is important for Cambridge but the fans here tonight are representatives for fans at every club big and small across the land.
“For us to be able to play a part hopefully in taking this first step, it’s a big step for Cambridge United but a much bigger step for football.

“Football without fans is a million times better than no football but football with fans is everything.

“The more that can be done to get fans back in a safe and responsible manner, the better it is for everybody.”
The preparation goes back weeks, and put the entire club – already struggling to make ends meet financially during Covid-19 – under an added strain, pressure and nervousness.
Had they failed it would have pushed FA plans back by months, even more so with recent comments from the Prime Minister that test events could be put on hold altogether from next week.
The first tannoy announcement of the evening claimed: “Welcome back to history in the making.”
To add to the expectation, over 20 safety officers from clubs across the country were in attendance to witness whether the time is right for fans to return.
Not everything went to plan; the night before the game an emergency batch of red spray paint had to be delivered to finish marking the floors with red arrows towards toilets and exit points.
But upon reflection, Cambridge United appear to have done the country proud.
Unlike a normal match day, the 862 fans that attended arrived early to reduce the possibility of overcrowding and give time to have temperatures taken.

Upon walking into the stadium, a husband turned to his wife to ask: “Where shall we sit?” to which the wife replied: “I don’t care, as long as I can see!” before brushing cobwebs from their seats.
Hot food, including chips and burgers, were available from socially-distanced vans.
Tannoy announcements were regular and clear before, during and after the game, reminding fans to keep masks on, avoid movement amongst the empty seats and to remain in the stand at half time and full time until told otherwise.
Portable toilets were scattered around the outside of each stand at a 2m distance, while hand sanitiser stations were available at almost every entrance.
There was a real hush just after kick-off, almost as if the sheer shock of seeing live football from the stands had erased their usual chants and songs from their minds.
But the goal celebrations were emphatic, yet measured, even in the packed north stand – which ironically used to be called the ‘Corona Stand’ because of the nearby Corona factory.
Fans were scattered and spread out, but done in such a way that the ground hardly looked empty.
And at the end of the game, stewards in each of the four stands released fans row by row. Tedious, but a necessity.

There are hopes from the EFL, as well as the FA and Premier League, that this is just the beginning – with similar test exercises hoping to be carried out soon.
Success then, on and off the pitch at Abbey Road, is a good sign for English football, and will stand as the marker if and when further test events in England are carried out over the next month.
But fan-elected director Dave Matthew-Jones warned: “We have done one test. We are not relaxed just yet.
“We did well but we need to learn and there were little tweaks that may make it even better and much more efficient.
“It’s now about learning from every game. We can’t just think we are done. For the next 40 or 60 games we need to make sure it is perfect or near to perfect.”
Director Smith added: “It is all one step at a time. With a lot of hard work, we can get back to having not full capacity in grounds but certainly a significant number of fans who can enjoy football again.
“Football without fans is a million times better than no football but football with fans is everything. The more that can be done to get fans back in a safe and responsible manner, the better it is for everybody.”
The first step has been made by Cambridge United. Now, the rest of the country must follow – if and when they are able to.

SunSport exclusively revealed last month that American financiers Randy Frankel and Michael Kalt are ready to rescue Wigan with a £5million-plus offer to take them out of administration.

And SunSport brought you news today that Simon Grayson is being lined up as Wigan’s next manager.

Simon Grayson set for shock return to management with crisis club Wigan with administrators drafting in experienced boss

SIMON GRAYSON is set for a shock return to management with crisis club Wigan Athletic.
Grayson will be brought in by the administrators to run the side and take the senior role currently filled by caretaker Leam Richardson.

    1

Simon Grayson is set for a shock return to management with crisis club Wigan Athletic
The experienced boss will be drafted in to help the backroom team and should be in the dug-out for the opener at Ipswich on Sunday.
It is a remarkable move while the admins try to find a buyer but run into massive problems finding anyone to pick up the full £4million bill.
Grayson is happy to help after being out of work since a brief stint at Blackpool ended a year ago.
He has also worked at this level with Preston and been a success.

It will be an open-ended relationship with Grayson on a minimal salary but keen to get back into the game with no idea how long it will last.
Grayson is known to administrator Gerald Krasner but the idea to bring him in was also from Richardson who succeeded Paul Cook when he quit last month.
Meanwhile, Wigan’s potential new owners are willing to move GROUND to play at Leigh’s Rugby League stadium.
The American takeover pair Randy Frankel and Michael Kalt are in talks about the shock switch of ‘home’ as they try to get a deal done to rescue the club from administration.

The change of address from Wigan’s old DW Stadium ground would need approval by the EFL.
But it is already used by Manchester United in the WSL as well as Leigh in the rugby world.
This surprise idea has also been run past supporters groups and the local authorities and is now part of their plans for the future.

The change of address from Wigan’s old DW Stadium ground would need approval by the EFL.
But it is already used by Manchester United in the WSL as well as Leigh in the rugby world.
This surprise idea has also been run past supporters groups and the local authorities and is now part of their plans for the future.
The group, advised and fronted by Frenchman Gauthier Ganaye, are unwilling to pay the £3 million asking price for the current stadium.

They have offered £500,001 for the football club and training ground.
But that was rejected by the administrators.
The admins are demanding the £3 million sum for the stadium to be paid too.
That figure covers their fees along with the creditors and legal costs.

Wigan rugby chief Ian Lenagan has been trying to buy the ground and become landlord rather than tenant and that is still in negotiation.
However the French-American team are unhappy with the rental terms he wants.
And they turned to Leigh’s modern and compact ground as an alternative.

Man Utd youngster Dylan Levitt signed by Charlton on season long loan transfer after impressing on Wales debut

MANCHESTER UNITED youngster Dylan Levitt has signed for Charlton on a season long loan.
United legend Ryan Giggs gave Levitt his full Wales debut last week and the midfielder’s impressive performance has caught the eye of the Addicks.

    1

Man Utd midfielder Dylan Levitt has signed for Charlton on loan
The teenager played the full 90 minutes in his country’s 1-0 win in Finland.
And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also has faith in the holding midfielder having given him his first team bow against Astana in the Europa League last year.
Charlton boss Lee Bowyer wanted to add energy to his midfield and has managed to secure a deal.
The Addicks had promising West Ham star Josh Cullen on loan last season in midfield but the 24-year-old has returned to the London Stadium.

Levitt’s impressive passing ability from a deep lying midfield role is said to have alerted Giggs to his potential some time ago.
And Giggs was so impressed, he handed him his first senior call up in May 2019 for Wales’ Euro 2020 qualifiers against Croatia and Hungary.
Levitt’s mentality is said to be one his biggest strengths and his international gaffer wants him in his squad for many years to come.
He previously told United’s website: “When Dylan was in the [Euro] squad, we had must-win games so I couldn’t really throw him in and put him in that pressure cooker.

“But, in training, he’s one of the best.

“He’s my kind of player – a good character, quiet but tough, and he’s one that I’ll be taking a big look at over the next year or so.
“I want him to develop and if he does and, if he plays more games, then he’ll definitely be in the reckoning.
“He’s a really intelligent player with a good range of passing and he stands out in training in every session.”

Sunderland re-sign Danny Graham, 35, on free transfer after striker’s release from Blackburn

VETERAN striker Danny Graham has agreed to re-join Sunderland on a free transfer after being released by Blackburn.
Having signed for £5million in 2013, Graham managed just one goal in 42 matches for the Black Cats.

But boss Phil Parkinson has offered the 35-year-old a one-year deal to compete with fellow forwards Will Grigg, Charlie Wyke and Aiden O’Brien.
Sunderland had to fight off League One rivals Ipswich for the ex-Middlesbrough and Swansea man.
And he arrives back in the north east after being a fans’ favourite in his four years at Ewood Park.
Graham leaves Blackburn after 57 goals in 191 games, also winning their 2018-19 player-of-the-year award.

But he only bagged four Championship goals last season.

He did, though, notch up his 600th career appearance on a dramatic final day of the season.
Coming on as a sub, he failed to save Rovers from a 3-2 defeat at Luton that enabled the home side to stay up – as they moved out of the bottom three for the first time since December.
Now he hopes to help Sunderland return to that level after their two campaigns in the third tier. More

Watch hilariously blunt Crawley boss give grumpy short answers in post-match interview after defeat to Millwall

CRAWLEY TOWN manager John Yems gave a hilariously blunt post-match interview after losing to Milwall.
The League Two side were beaten 3-1 in the EFL Cup.

    1

Crawley Town manager John Yems gave a hilariously blunt post-match interview after losing to Milwall
And Crawley spoke to their boss afterwards, but were given rather short and grumpy responses.
Questioned on what the thinking was behind switching his squad set-up, Yems responds: “Hopefully to win the game.”
The manager was then asked what he could take away from the defeat.
    He said: “I don’t know.”

The brief exchange was mocked by fans online.
One said: “What is the point of interviewing Yems if he has nothing to say?
“He is either fuming or totally disinterested.”

    Another said: “Great interview.”

One added: “This guy must be so frustrating to be around.”
Another added: “Please put Yems on a media course. He could at least try to be engaging.” More
