      Dream Team’s big two deliver as Haaland and Salah bag braces – but bargain defender hits huge haul in GW12

      YES, they make up two of the top three most expensive players in the game.But GameWeek 12 showed that, no matter how frustrating seeing your big money purchases flopping against the lower sides can be, you must stick to your guns when it comes to the superstar buys.
      Haaland and Salah did the business for the big spenders
      Erling Haaland kicked off the previous game week with a home game against Bournemouth, where plenty will have pinned their hopes on him.
      After just a 45 minute appearance, 1 point for that game and coming away with injury concern, Haaland fired in 15 points at home to Young Boys and a tremendous 17 points in that bonkers game at Chelsea on Sunday.
      His two goals and one assist against the resurgent Blues showed that any game he plays in should be treated like a Bournemouth at home game – of course, no offence is intended…
      That’s the state of play when it comes to the big Norwegian. He had a “cold” start to the season, judged purely on the fact he was red hot at the start of his maiden campaign last year.
      In his last five games – which included Chelsea, a Manchester derby and two Champions League games – he’s hit a double-figure point haul in four of them, making it remarkable that 12.8% of managers still go without him in attack – even at the £7.7m fee.
      Salah and Tsimikas both bagged 14 points in win over Brentford
      That’s £1.1m more than Mohamed Salah, who hasn’t quite hit the heights he has in previous years but remains the second top points scorer in Dream Team.
      That makes him dangerous, knowing that his numbers could explode at any minute.
      Might that be now? Salah’s two goals against Brentford ended a five-game single-figure point haul for the Egyptian (14 vs Brentford), and catapulted him ahead of Bukayo Saka (£6.5m) in the season standings to date.
      Haaland and Salah might well just be warming up, so Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp will be hoping there isn’t a temperature drop for the pair during this international break – when they meet for Manchester City vs Liverpool on the Premier League return…
      Honourable mentions of the weekend include Kostas Tsimikas who joined Salah on 14 points in the one match after his two assists and clean sheet in that win over the Bees. A great cheap alternative while Andy Robertson remains out until the new year.
      While Jarrod Bowen (£5.2m) struck 9 points for the second successive Premier League outing in the Nottingham Forest win – which sees him go fourth in the season points tally.
      And just 0.4% of managers benefitted from Victor Lindelof’s (£2.1m) heroics in the weekend win over Luton.
      An impressive 13 points he amassed, with Erik ten Hag still unsure what defence to put out. A clean sheet and winning goal might well mean we’ll be seeing more of Lindelof and his backers will be hoping that’s the case.

      Tottenham have a swathe of absentees with Cristian Romero (£3.7m) and Destiny Udogie (£2.9m) both suspended after their dismissals against Chelsea on Monday.
      Micky van der Ven (£3m) is out with a hamstring injury until January, and it’s a similar story for attacking duo James Maddison (£4.4m) and Richarlison (£2.6m).
      Wolves winger Pedro Neto (£3.2m) remains sidelined with a hamstring issue.
      Roy Hodgson hopes to have Michael Olise (£3m) and Eberechi Eze (£3.6m) fit for Saturday’s visit of Everton, who have doubts over the availability of Amadou Onana (£2.7m), Jarrad Branthwaite (£1.8m) and Abdoulaye Doucoure (£3m).

      Erik ten Hag has most of his squad available, although Jonny Evans’ (£2.3m) muscle injury means he’s sidelined along with Luke Shaw (£4.9m) and Tyrell Malacia (£3m).
      Newcastle striker Callum Wilson (£4.5m) is nursing a tight hamstring and remains a doubt for the trip to Bournemouth. He’s rated 50/50 but midfielder Bruno Guimaraes (£3.3m) is definitely out through suspension.
      John Stones (£4.4m) joined Kevin De Bruyne (£6.7m) and Sergio Gomez (£1.9m) on the sidelines after picking up an injury which forced him off against Young Boys on Tuesday.

      Brighton’s injury list grew against Ajax on Thursday. Pervis Estupinan (£3.2m), Lewis Dunk (£2.5m) and James Milner (£1.9m) all picked up injuries and will miss the contest with Sheffield United.
      Julio Enciso (£2.2m), Tariq Lamptey (£2.1m), Solly March (£3.6m) and Danny Welbeck (£2.2m) remain out. It’s better news for the Blades, who are likely to have Anel Ahmedhodzic (£1.3m) and Oli McBurnie (£2.1m) back.

      For those who feel Gameweek 12 is a good time to take Haaland on, consider these alternatives for the armband…
      Bukayo Saka (£6.3m)
      Arsenal host Burnley on Saturday and so all eyes will once again be on the Gunners’ gifted No7.
      Saka sent a message to his midfield rivals with a 21-point haul this Gameweek, mostly thanks to his fantastic display against Sevilla on Wednesday night.
      The England winger has registered six goals and eight assists already this season and he’s now level with Eberechi Eze (£3.6m) on 22 bonus points at the top of that particular metric.

      The Clarets have lost nine of their 11 league games since promotion and only Sheffield United have conceded more goals.
      Everything seems aligned for another Saka masterclass this weekend but one potential drawback is his latest availability concern.
      The 22-year-old limped off in midweek for the what felt like the hundredth time this year but Mikel Arteta has made it clear Saka will always play if available, even if he can only operate at half capacity.
      Dream Team bosses should keep their eyes and ears peeled for further updates but at this stage it seems likely Dream Team’s top midfielder will be unleashed upon the league’s second-worst defence and that dynamic alone makes him a worthy captain.

      Kieran Trippier (£5.5m)
      Another potential to mismatch to target is Bournemouth v Newcastle.
      The Cherries have conceded just as many goals as Burnley while Eddie Howe’s side are second only to City in terms of goals scored.
      That would suggest it may be best to back an attacking asset among the visitors’ starting line-up but Trippier is just as likely to register attacking returns as he is to bag a clean sheet.
      The reliable right-back has created nine big chances and provided seven assists in all competitions – he ranks in the top five for both metrics among all players.
      He’s also one of the most prolific bonus point collectors – only Saka, Eze and James Maddison (£4.4m) have more to their name at this stage.

      Ollie Watkins (£4.7m)
      Aston Villa were dealt a reality check by Nottingham Forest last weekend but they have the luxury of a home fixture against Fulham this weekend.
      Unai Emery’s troops have been rampant at Villa Park, scoring 20 goals in five league fixtures compared six goals in as many games on the road.
      The Villains’ No11 is evidently his side’s primary threat in the final third – he’s notched six goals and eight assists so far in 2023/24.

      Fulham are not the worst side in the league by any means but they’re massively dependant on Joao Palhinha (£3.4m), who is once again leading the way in terms of tackles among all Premier League players.
      Only the three sides currently in the relegation zone have generated fewer xG than the Cottagers and their rank only marginally improves to 15th in terms of xGA (expected goals allowed – essentially measuring defensive quality).
      All signs point to one-way traffic in the hosts’ favour and that should result in healthy returns for Watkins.
      Some Dream Team gaffers may feel the captain’s armband is a bridge too far but Villa really are a formidable beast on home soil.
      Kaoru Mitoma (£4m)
      Perhaps too bold of a shout here as Brighton’s results have tailed off of late.
      However, the Seagulls have the most favourable Premier League fixture possible on Sunday in the form of Sheffield United at home.
      The Blades are bottom of the table having conceded 30 goals in 11 league fixtures.

      Granted, Paul Heckingbottom’s men did beat Wolves last time out but if Brighton play at even 75% capacity there should be substantial points on offer for Mitoma.

      Manchester United v Luton
      This one hinges on just how far the Red Devils are willing to descend into farce for the neutrals’ entertainment.

      Erik ten Hag’s side should have enough to get past a newly-promoted outfit currently 17th in the table but the manner of their recent defeats to Manchester City, Newcastle and Copenhagen haven’t inspired much confidence.
      Worryingly, Man United have scored just 12 league goals this season – fewer than Wolves and the same number as Nottingham Forest.
      They’re also the only team in the top half with a negative goal difference.
      The Hatters drew with Liverpool last weekend but that was on home soil – if this weekend’s clash was also at Kenilworth Road then we’d be inclined to back another upset.
      As it is, we’re envisaging an unconvincing home win.

      Bournemouth v Newcastle
      The league’s second-worst defence welcome the league’s second-best attack to the south coast.
      A trip to the other end of the country hot the heels of a European away day is not ideal for the Magpies but they’re undefeated in nine domestic outings while the Cherries are coming off a 6-1 loss last time out.
      Eddie Howe won’t be able to call upon his first-choice XI amid a flurry of injuries but the visitors should still be too strong for Andoni Iraola’s men, who have lost nine of their 11 league fixtures.
      Our Prediction: 2-0 to Newcastle
      Liverpool v Brentford
      Sunday’s match-up at Anfield has the makings of a high-scoring affair.
      Only four teams have generated more xG than the Bees in the top flight this term and it’s Jurgen Klopp side who lead the way in the fashionable metric.
      Thomas Frank’s side have won three games in a row and the hosts will have to be wary of the threat posed by Bryan Mbeumo, who has six goals and two assists to his name already.
      Liverpool’s potency is partially dependent on whether Darwin Nunez engages his unplayable mode or adopts his hungover Sunday League alter ego.
      Saying that, Mohamed Salah has 12 goal contributions in 11 league outings and there’s a feeling of inevitability about the Egyptian at home to a mid-table team.
      The Reds are partial to a 3-1 win this season and this feels like it could be another.
      Our Prediction: 3-1 to Liverpool

      West Ham v Nottingham Forest
      A tough one here with the two teams separated by just one place and one point in the table.
      The Hammers started the season well enough but three defeats on the spin have seen them drop into the bottom half.
      Forest registered an impressive win over Aston Villa at the City Ground last weekend but their away form remains a concern.
      No team have drawn as many league games as Steve Cooper’s mob this season, which leads us to…
      Our Prediction: 1-1 draw
      Chelsea v Manchester City
      It’s hard to know what to read into Monday night’s game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
      On one hand, the Blues beat the last remaining undefeated top flight side 4-1 in their own back garden.
      But on the other, Spurs’ two red cards and ultra high line meant the contest was unlike any other in Premier League history – Mauricio Pochettino’s men actually made a meal of it for much of the second half in extremely favourable circumstances.
      Amid the chaos of that fixture, the controversy of Newcastle v Arsenal, and Liverpool’s slip-up at Luton, Pep Guardiola’s side quietly reclaimed top spot with an easy home win over Bournemouth.
      Of all a sudden, the treble winners are the league’s top scorers and boast the best defensive record – normal service has been ominously resumed.

      With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the midfield assets who have notched the most goal involvements so far this campaign.
      MIDFIELDERS WITH MOST GOAL INVOLVEMENTS THIS SEASON:

      Bukayo Saka (£6.3m) – 12 (five goals, seven assists)
      Jarrow Bowen (£5m) – 11 (eight goals, three assists)
      Bryan Mbeumo (£3.9m) – 9 (six goals, three assists)
      Phil Foden (£4.5m) – 9 (five goals, four assists)
      Jeremy Doku (£3.9m) – 9 (three goals, six assists)
      James Maddison (£4.4m) – 9 – (three goals, six assists)
      Pedro Neto (£3.2m) – 9 – (one goal, eight assists)

      Arsenal’s No7 leads the way with a dozen goal involvements but West Ham’s top scorer edges out his international team-mate in pure goals.
      Fittingly, the pair are the top two points-scorers among midfielders in Dream Team right now with Saka (109) one point ahead of Bowen (108) – further evidence of the unmatched importance of attacking returns.
      The Gunners’ homegrown star tops the pile despite being hampered by persistent injury niggles – imagine the numbers he’ll rack up when he eventually gets back to 100%.

      Mbeumo’s presence in this list is mightily impressive given the Cameroon international doesn’t have midweek European fixtures to bolster his schedule.
      All nine of his goal involvements have come in 11 league outings.
      Many fans expected the 24-year-old to step up for Brentford during Ivan Toney’s suspension and he’s done just that throughout the first quarter of the season.
      Foden is still a young man but he’s already carved out a reputation as a consistent Dream Team midfielder who delivers year upon year.
      The talented playmaker has largely been immune to Pep Guardiola’s dreaded rotation policy this term – he came off the bench to score against Bournemouth at the weekend to prove he doesn’t need to play every minute of every game to tick along nicely.
      And the same can be said of Doku to an even greater extent.
      The skilful Belgian has played fewer than half the available minutes so far in 2023/24 and yet only Saka and Bowen have provided more goal involvements among midfielders.
      In fact, Doku averages a goal or assist every 73.9 minutes for City – a stat that owes plenty to his recent exhibition against the Cherries.

      Looking forward, the rapid winger may be the biggest threat to Saka and Bowen’s respective statuses, if Guardiola gives in to the clamour for increased playing time for arguably the most exciting talent in the Premier League right now.
      Like Mbeumo, all Maddison’s contributions have come in the Premier League and these stats only tell half the story of the positive impact provided by Tottenham’s No10.
      Barring the unique nature of their defeat to Chelsea on Monday night, Ange Postecoglou’s side have impressed and their playmaker-in-chief has been at the heart of a swashbuckling attacking unit.
      On top of his goals and assists, Maddison has racked up 21 bonus points – the second-highest total – and ranks highly for shots and target and big chances created.
      His availability question mark is a massive talking point in the realm of Dream Team as he’s currently the game’s most-selected player after Erling Haaland (£7.6m).

      Wolves’ talisman completes this list although his Dream Team viability is null and void while he recovers from a hamstring injury.

      Neto boasts the joint-highest assist tally alongside Ollie Watkins (£4.7m) among all players and it’s probably not a coincidence than his side’s run of five unbeaten games came to an end in his absence with a shock defeat to Sheffield United last weekend.
      Dream Team bosses should endeavour to keep track of which midfielders are racking up the most goal involvements throughout the season.
