Third-most popular defender in Dream Team Euros might be BENCHED for Matchday 1

THE deadline for Matchday 1 is a week away and so Dream Team Euros managers should be getting close to locking in their selections. It’s our duty to ensure gaffers are as well informed as possible when picking their players and that’s why we feel compelled to highlight William Saliba’s (£4.5m) undeserved popularity.PLAY DREAM TEAM EUROS NOW – £50,000 PRIZE POT, FREE TO PLAY, GREAT FUN!William Saliba appears in almost a fifth of all teams created so farCredit: Dream TeamAt the time of writing, the France centre-back is the third-most popular defender in the game.In fact, his ownership of 19.1% makes him the ninth-most selected player overall. On the surface this may seem reasonable as the 23-year-old is coming off the back of a highly impressive campaign with Arsenal. The Gunners boasted the best defensive record in the Premier League and their No2’s composed yet assured brand of defending was a key factor in Mikel Arteta’s side registering 18 clean sheets in the top flight alone.Couple this with Les Bleus’ status as one of the heavy favourites to triumph in Germany this summer and it would appear that Saliba is strong option worthy of his lofty price tag. However, Didier Deschamps is not as convinced of Saliba’s talents as the average Premier League viewer.Deschamps has previously criticised Saliba publiclyCredit: AFPArsenal fans have long wondered why their accomplished centre-back has been relatively starved of minutes at international level and France’s long-serving coach addressed the issue back in March. Most read in Football”He [Saliba] is having a good season,” Deschamps told reporters during the spring international break. “But he also does things that I don’t like so much. “For France he has limited game time but when he plays, that hasn’t necessarily gone well.”Over two months have passed since Deschamps made those comments, during which time Saliba produced several classy performances, and so there’s a chance things have changed.EUROS SCORE PREDICTOR IS HERE! Dream Team Euros: Portugal’s top stars, bargain options & players to avoid

DREAM TEAM EUROS managers should be drawn to Portugal when building their XIs for Matchday 1.Roberto Martinez’s side cruised through qualifying with ten wins from ten; boasting the best defensive record and the most goals scored among all 53 European teams – albeit against a favourable set of opponents. The 2016 European champions boast a well-balanced, deep squad but who are the top stars, bargain options and players to avoid?PLAY DREAM TEAM EUROS NOW – £50,000 PRIZE POT, FREE TO PLAY, GREAT FUN!Portugal look strong on paperCredit: Dream TeamTOP STARSCristiano Ronaldo (£6m) will always be the standout name but this current Portugal team belongs to Bruno Fernandes (£6m).The Manchester United midfielder scored six goals and provided an unmatched tally of eight assists during qualifying – he’s very much the talisman these days.Plus, he finished the domestic season in fine form, averaging a shade under nine points-per-game in Dream Team’s season game after the turn of the year. That’s not to diminish the pedigree of Portugal’s Legendary No7.Ronaldo heads to Germany having plundered 50 goals in as many games for Al-Nassr this term. Most read in FootballOnly Romelu Lukaku (£5.5m) scored more goals than the five-time Ballon d’Or winner during qualifying and it’s always worth remembering that the 39-year-old is the top goalscorer in the history of international football.Having been dropped during the 2022 World Cup, Ronaldo has been emphatically reinstated as first-choice striker under Martinez.Mr InevitableCredit: GettyElsewhere, Bernardo Silva (£4.5m) is a guaranteed starter and a permanent class act who has multiple avenues to points in the realm of Dream Team – he even gets through his fair share of tackles.Between the sticks, Diogo Costa (£4m) will be hopeful of clean sheets against Czechia, Turkey and Georgia in Group F – he kept more (six) than any other goalkeeper during the qualification campaign.EUROS SCORE PREDICTOR IS HERE! CLICK HERE TO PLAY FOR FREE – £5,000 PRIZE POT!BARGAIN OPTIONSSuch is the strength in depth available to Martinez this summer, not a single Portugal player is priced below £3m in Dream Team Euros. But there’s certainly value for money on offer, perhaps from Vitinha (£3m) who may well start in midfield after an impressive campaign with PSG.Some gaffers may feel Joao Palhinha (£3.5m) is reasonably priced as the combative 28-year-old is surely the front runner to make more tackles than anyone else at the tournament, as he did comfortably in the Premier League once again this season.Remember, Dream Team Euros assets earn one point for every two tackles once the action is underway – Palhinha is capable of picking up three, four or even five points in a single fixture this way if he’s in the mood.In defence, it’s not inconceivable that 41-year-old Pepe (£3.5m) will start at centre-back.If that’s the case, the grizzled veteran would have to be considered very affordable.PLAY DREAM TEAM EUROS NOW!The best fantasy football game for this summer’s tournament.
Tackle machineCredit: GettyPLAYERS TO AVOIDAt the time of writing, Diogo Dalot (£4m) is the tenth-most selected defender in the game but backing him from the get-go is fraught with risk. The Manchester United defender tends to collect plenty of points when on the pitch but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Martinez opted for Joao Cancelo (£4.5m) and Nuno Mendes (£4m) in the full-back positions, at least initially.READ MORE SUN STORIESSimilarly, Rafael Leao (£4.5m) would be a hugely tempting option if he was guaranteed to start but Joao Felix (£4.5m) and Diogo Jota (£4.5m) represent stiff competition in his position. It might be worth waiting until Matchday 2 before making a decision on the skilful Milan winger’s viability – to those taking a punt on him from the start, good luck!Dream Team’s Nick Elliott previews this summer’s Euros fantasy game More

Record-breaker Romelu Lukaku could feast in Belgium’s favourable group – are Dream Team Euros bosses underrating him?

ROMELU LUKAKU (£5.5m) is a captivating character.Laughable at his worst but unplayable at his best, the Belgium target man is the perfect subject for the next edition in our EURO STAR series – previously featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, Jamal Musiala and Antoine Griezmann – that seeks to thoroughly examine players of note in relation to Dream Team’s Euros fantasy game.PLAY DREAM TEAM EUROS NOW – £50,000 PRIZE POT, FREE TO PLAY, GREAT FUN!Does Lukaku deserve to be more popular?Credit: Dream TeamAt the time of writing, Lukaku features in 12.3% of teams created, which puts him just outside the top 20 most-popular players in the game. Many Dream Team bosses won’t be able to look past the more farcical spells of the 31-year-old’s career – he appeared overweight and disinterested at the back end of his Manchester United tenure and his second spell at Chelsea has proved to be bitterly underwhelming. But it would be a mistake to underestimate what he’s capable of when everything clicks.During qualifying for Euro 2024, Lukaku scored 14 goals in eight appearances – a record tally for a European Championship qualifying campaign.Granted he eight of those goals came from 240 minutes of action against Estonia and Azerbaijan but a hat-trick away to Sweden and strikes in each fixture against fellow qualifiers Austria proved he was no flat-track bully.Lukaku has enjoyed himself in a Belgium shirtCredit: APTruth be told, a genuine flat-track bully would be licking their lips looking at Belgium’s group stage opponents this summer. The Red Devils will take on Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine and while those sides made it to Germany on merit, there can be little doubt Group E pales in comparison quality-wise to Group B (Spain, Italy, Croatia, Albania). Most read in FootballSimply put, Lukaku could feast during the group stage if he picks up where he left off at international level – gaffers may remember he provided an impressive assist during a friendly against England in March.EUROS SCORE PREDICTOR IS HERE! CLICK HERE TO PLAY FOR FREE – £5,000 PRIZE POT!More broadly, his overall record for Belgium is truly immense. He’s scored 83 goals in 114 caps at senior level at a better strike than Neymar, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.Only seven players have scored more goals in the entire history of men’s international football and Lukaku needs just three more to jump up two more places.PLAY DREAM TEAM EUROS NOW!The best fantasy football game for this summer’s tournament.
He was limited to just 54 minutes at the 2022 World Cup, during which time he squandered two gilt-edged chances, but he scored four goals in five outings at Euro 2020.Dream Team managers would understandably be hesitant to back Lukaku if he had endured a torrid domestic season but he returned 21 goals in all competitions on loan at Roma in 2023/24.And let’s not forget that Belgium’s first-choice striker has the luxury of being served by Kevin De Bruyne (£7m), arguably the best playmaker of his generation.Lukaku has occasionally been a figure of fun but he ticks a lot of boxes in the world of Dream Team Euros.Dream Team’s Nick Elliott previews this summer’s Euros fantasy game More

Dream Team Euros: Germany’s top stars, bargain options & players to avoid

IT wasn’t that long ago that German fans were largely pessimistic about their side’s hopes at Euro 2024.A series of disappointing results led to the dismissal of Hansi Flick and debate raged about Die Mannschaft’s best XI.However, consecutive wins over France and Netherlands in March, coupled with the return of Toni Kroos and the eye-catching form of some of their younger talents, have boosted morale considerably.Naturally, Dream Team Euros managers will be keen on Germany, now under the guidance of Julian Nagelsmann, so let’s analyse their top stars, bargain options, and players to avoid.PLAY DREAM TEAM EUROS NOW – £50,000 PRIZE POT, FREE TO PLAY, GREAT FUN!Florian Wirtz has the potential to take the tournament by stormCredit: Dream TeamTOP STARSMuch of the hosts’ hopes rest on the young shoulders of Jamal Musiala (£4.5m) and Florian Wirtz (£4.5m).The former is one of the most natural dribblers in world football, a gift that should earn him a few bonus points, while the latter is coming off the back of a hugely successful campaign with Bayer Leverkusen.Wirtz registered 18 goals and 20 assists as Xabi Alonso’s side suffered just one defeat in all competitions.Joshua Kimmich (£5m) is the joint-most expensive defender in the game; a reflection of his dual purpose. Most read in Dream TeamThe 29-year-old will be hopeful of clean sheets in Group A, where Germany are joined by Scotland, Hungary and Swizterland, but he’s also got the quality to contribute in attack – he’s played more than enough times in midfield throughout his career.A fantastic crosser of the ball, Kimmich registered ten assists for Bayern Munich in 2023/24.Havertz finished well for Arsenal in 2023/24Credit: GettyUp top, Kai Havertz (£4.5m) is most likely to lead the line and he’ll be hoping to carry over the form he exhibited for Arsenal during the final third of the domestic campaign.Mikel Arteta started using him as a false nine and, as a result, Havertz scored nine goals and provided six assists in his last 14 outings for the Gunners.BARGAIN OPTIONSOutright bargains are generally found among the less fancied teams but that doesn’t mean savvy gaffers can’t find decent value for money among the German ranks.Maximilian Mittelstadt (£3.5m) has just three senior caps to his name but he’s expected to start at left-back after an impressive season with Stuttgart. The 27-year-old took his chance in those morale-boosting wins back in March, he even scored against the Netherlands.Starting defenders among the tournament’s bigger teams generally cost more than £3.5m so Dream Team bosses looking to save some cash at the back could take advantage of Mittelstadt’s price.Mittelstadt is expected to start at left-back against ScotlandCredit: GettyToni Kroos (£3.5m) is a class act and likely to be the man pulling the strings in midfield but whether his understated style will lead to many points is difficult to predict.Truth be told, it’s probably worth finding some extra budget for one of his more attack-minded team-mates.PLAY DREAM TEAM EUROS NOW!The best fantasy football game for this summer’s tournament.
PLAYERS TO AVOIDAs previously mentioned, Havertz is thought to be the first-choice centre-forward from the get-go which means Niclas Fullkrug (£4m) will have to be content as an impact substitute, at least initially. The tall target man has an excellent record at international level having scored 11 goals in 15 appearances to date but his domestic form for Borussia Dortmund tailed off at the back end of the season – though he did produce some good performances in the Champions League knockout stages.Similarly, Thomas Muller (£4m) is generally limited to cameo performances these days. The experienced ‘Raumdeuter’ was a tournament specialist in his younger years but he’s only completed 90 minutes for Germany twice since Euro 2020.Fullkrug will have to be patientCredit: GettyAt the time of writing, Marc-Andre ter Stegen (£4m) is the joint-tenth most selected goalkeeper in Dream Team Euros but he’s likely to play second fiddle to Manuel Neuer (£4.5m).Backing a reserve keeper is a bad enough as it is but selecting one that costs £4m is a potential disaster.READ MORE SUN STORIESLastly, Leroy Sane (£5.5m) owners should tread carefully as he’s far from a guaranteed starter. The Bayern Munich winger’s price is a reflection of his talent but he’ll only be viable if he’s assured of minutes – gaffers might want to wait until Matchday 1 has played out before making a decision on him.Dream Team’s Nick Elliott previews this summer’s Euros fantasy game More

Are 23% of Dream Team Euros managers making a mistake selecting Kyle Walker?

KYLE WALKER (£4m) is currently the most-popular defender in Dream Team’s Euros fantasy game. The England right-back features in 23.4% of teams created at the time of writing and while there’s still time for the outlook to change before the Matchday 1 deadline on June 14th (7pm), it seems certain he’ll be among the most-selected players in his position once the action is underway. But is he truly worthy of such immense popularity?PLAY DREAM TEAM EUROS NOW – £50,000 PRIZE POT, FREE TO PLAY, GREAT FUN!Dream Team Euros’ most-selected defenderCredit: Dream TeamWalker is almost certain to start for the Three Lions against Serbia and so it’s understandable that gaffers who think Gareth Southgate’s side will go far this summer believe the speedy defender is a safe and smart choice.Even at 34 years old he remains among the fastest players in Europe and he has been a regular for Pep Guardiola during Manchester City’s trophy-laden years lately. However, Walker rarely provides much attacking threat for England. His goal against Ukraine in qualifying for Euro 2024 was his only one at international level in 82 caps and he’s provided just three assists in his last 41 outings. This is partially because he has often been tasked with playing as a right-sided centre-back who isn’t supposed to stray too far from John Stones (£4.5m).Walker is one of Southgate’s favourites but not optimally suited to Dream TeamCredit: GettyDream Team bosses don’t need all their defenders to offer a threat going forward but those who don’t should be strong clean sheet candidates, especially if they’re at the more expensive end of the price range. Most read in FootballIn this sense, each player is only as good as their team’s collective defensive ability.England have a wealth of attacking pedigree in the current squad with the expected front four of Jude Bellingham (£6m), Phil Foden (£6.5m), Bukayo Saka (£6.5m) and Harry Kane (£7.5m) all heading into the tournament in excellent form. But there are question marks at the back.Stones, Harry Maguire (£4.5m) and Luke Shaw (£4m) are all availability concerns at this stage with the latter’s potential absence creating a serious problem at left-back.No doubt this is why so many gaffers have put their faith in Walker, who is almost guaranteed to start, but surely there’s a chance England’s makeshift back four will be more vulnerable than usual?Southgate has problems to solve in defenceCredit: RexAt £4m Walker doesn’t come cheap and for that price a defender should either have some notable attacking attributes or likely to benefit from clean sheets (ideally both). It may be the case that England’s defence holds up fine but managers should at least consider alternative options from other top teams. To be clear, picking Walker is by no means a clanging error but whether he’s an optimum selection, worthy of appearing in nearly a quarter of all teams, is another matter entirely.PLAY DREAM TEAM EUROS NOW!The best fantasy football game for this summer’s tournament.

Antoine Griezmann listed as midfielder in Dream Team Euros – is France’s tournament specialist a potential game-breaker?

ANY Dream Team Euros manager worth their salt should be alert to any tricks that might yield plentiful points. For the latest edition of our EURO STAR series – which has previously featured musings on Cristiano Ronaldo’s prospects and analysis of Jamal Musiala’s talent – we’ve chosen to focus on Antoine Griezmann (£6.5m), who is classified as a midfielder in a Dream Team fantasy game for the first time ever.CLICK HERE TO PLAY DREAM TEAM’S EUROS FANTASY GAME NOW!Only Kevin De Bruyne (£7m) costs more among Dream Team Euros midfieldersCredit: Dream TeamThe reason the 33-year-old is listed as a midfielder this time around is simply because he fulfils a deeper role for France these days. The matter is confused slightly by the fact he played predominantly as a centre-forward for Atletico Madrid this season, with great effect, but Didier Deschamps sees him more as a playmaker.Naturally, this change of position has resulted in a decrease in the number of goals he scores at international level.Since the start of 2022, Griezmann has scored just two goals in 25 appearances for Les Bleus.Contrast this with his record at club level and it’s night and day – he has scored 40 goals for Atletico across the last two seasons. However, while Griezmann is no longer primarily tasked with scoring goals for France, he remains a pivotal figure.Griezmann has been a key player for DeschampsCredit: GettyHe was the joint-top assist provider at the last World Cup and, for a player known for his attacking qualities, he gets through more than enough tackles – remember, players earn one point for every two tackles (per fixture) in Dream Team Euros. Most read in Dream TeamIf Griezmann was categorised as a forward then his recent scoring record at international level would be a big concern but as a midfielder he’s certainly viable. His creative output (big chances created, assists) plus his defensive contribution (tackles) means he has several routes to points even if he’s no longer a promising goal threat.Plus, he’s the sort of all-action player likely to collect his fair share of bonus points.More broadly, Griezmann always seems to turn up at major tournaments.EUROS SCORE PREDICTOR IS HERE! Dream Team Euros goalkeepers: Premium options, bargains & ones to avoid
