Football team Cheddar FC sponsorship deal with vegan cheese alternative

A FOOTBALL team in Cheddar is causing a stir after agreeing a sponsorship deal with a vegan rival of its popular namesake cheese.Cheddar AFC, which is based in the Somerset town where the much-loved cheese is matured in the famous caves, will now be sponsored by a Cheddar-style dairy alternative, Cheddarton.

The players, known as The Cheesemen, will be encouraged to embark on a plant-based journey from today.
As they sport the cheesy new kit, they will also take part in a training session with former professional player, and ex-Lioness, Karen Carney – who is also a vegan.
The sponsorship comes after a study of 2,000 adults who have meat and dairy in their diets found 69 per cent wouldn’t consider going vegan.
Of those, 57 per cent would miss their favourite non-vegan foods too much.

A spokesperson for sponsors, Violife, which commissioned the research to launch its dairy-free Cheddarton ‘cheese’, said: “The idea of switching to a vegan diet can seem like a big leap, and clearly many are worried about how they would feel without some of their favourite foods.
“But going plant-based doesn’t have to mean you no longer get to enjoy them.”
The study also found a meat-laden roast dinner is the food non-vegans would miss the most if they were to switch diets, followed by cheese, eggs, dairy milk and bacon.
And while 30 per cent of all those polled reckon they could happily live without meat, almost two-thirds (61 per cent) do not feel they could live without cheese.
    Most read in Football
As a result, 56 per cent think it is ‘hard’ to be vegan, with almost a quarter (23 per cent) of all plant-based diets ending due to the irresistibility of cheese.
However, despite the reluctance of some to switch to a plant-based diet, 20 per cent of those polled, via OnePoll, admitted it is better for the environment.
And nearly one in five (19 per cent) said animal welfare was a convincing reason to go vegan.
Despite this, over two-thirds (69 per cent) feel cheese is an essential part of their diet, with pizza, cheese on toast and lasagne making up respondents’ favourite cheesy dishes.
Of those polled, 60 per cent believe sportspeople need meat and dairy as part of their diet, so ex-Lioness, Karen Carney, is out to prove them wrong.
She said: “I turned vegan in 2018 and noticed the positive change immediately both in my health and performance on the football pitch when playing for both club and country.
“The perception of the plant-based diet is that you will miss out on certain foods but thankfully Violife means I never miss out on my cheesy favourites like pizza and cheese on toast.“
Kieran Webster, Captain of Cheddar AFC said: “Living and growing up in Cheddar, cheese is in the players’ blood.
“We know what’s key to making the cheesiest, gooiest dishes around, so if we can go plant-based, switching Cheddar for Cheddarton, anyone can!”
TOP 10 FOODS NON-VEGANS WOULD MISS IF THEY WENT VEGAN:

Naoya Inoue becomes four-weight world champ with BRUTAL win over Stephen Fulton as referee forced to stop fight

NAOYA INOUE ripped the unified super-bantamweight titles from Stephen Fulton in blistering fashion to become a FOUR-WEIGHT world champion. The former undisputed bantamweight king moved up in weight to challenge Fulton for his WBC and WBO straps on Tuesday afternoon in front of a packed crowd at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

The Monster was hoping to cement his status as one of boxing’s pound-for-pound kings with an emphatic victory over the American.
And he did just that with an eighth-round stoppage of the previously unbeaten Fulton to capture belts in his FOURTH weight class.
Inoue set the pace from the get-go, taking the centre of the ring and being light on his feet as he tried to get reads on the American.
And get them he did as he began to find a home for his piston jab – many of which were aimed at the body – and rip-roaring hooks.

Fulton, surprisingly, offered very little in terms of offence.
Perhaps it was the magnitude of the occasion or fighting arguably boxing’s pound-for-pound king enemy territory which got to him.
But either way, he was a shell of the fighter we’ve seen in recent years.
He did, however, showcase some of his true self in round seven – which proved to be the penultimate stanza of the contest.

Fulton found himself on the canvas just over 40 seconds into the eighth after eating a huge right hand and a follow-up left hook.
Inoue set up the stinging right with a stiff jab to the head of the American, who absorbed them to the body for the majority of the fight.
Fulton beat the count but was a wounded animal in desperate need of a break.
That break, however, didn’t come as Inoue – one of the sport’s bests finishers – went in for the kill.
The 30-year-old cornered the American and began teeing off on him as he turtled up to try and protect himself.
But some of the stinging punches got through and prompted the referee to jump in and wave off the contest as he collapsed to the canvas.

Boxing fans were quick to comment on the sensational stoppage, with one saying: “That was just two completely different levels.
“Inoue is just too good. 4 divisions for The Monster.”
Another said: “Best fighter on the planet. Absolutely no doubt about it.”
And another said: “Inoue just on a different level- so fast.
“He could even go up to 130 IMO with that power. One of the very best.”

One remarked: “Inoue beats them all he’s on another level pure and simple!”
Another chimed in: “Jab to body then right to the head. Was setting that up most of the fight.” More

But KSI came out and threw doubt over the fight by revealing a disagreement in weight.
He accused Fury of trying to change it from 180lb to 185lb and admitted it could be axed because of it.
KSI set a deadline on Monday to get the deal done and on the same day his promoter Kalle Sauerland revealed the weight was agreed upon.
Sauerland tweeted: “CONFIRMED: weights agreed today for @KSI v @tommytntfury….very close now!”

Fury did insist the weight had to be 185lb or else he would walk away to focus on a rematch with Jake Paul.
He said: “Just a few things to clear up; KSI’s only just agreed to do drug testing for this fight.
“Took his time with that one. And now he’s complaining about the weight. This fight’s at 185, take-it-or-leave it.
“I know you’re a midget and you’re worrying about the weight but get some more food down you and you’ll get there.

“If you just don’t want to fight, I know somebody who will fight in October, somebody who is ready to fight and will get to 185.
“Jake Paul, if you want to run it back, let’s do it, fine by me. I’ll knock you spark out this time. So let me know boys.”
KSI appeared to bite the bullet and accepted the weight – so long as there is an on the day weigh in too.
He tweeted: “Tommy, I wanna KO your ass so badly that I’ll come up in weight and do 185 lbs if you agree to do the weigh in on the morning of fight day.
“Nice fair fight. If not you will forever be known as Tommy Ducky.”
For KSI’s last fight against nightclub tycoon and 9-0 boxer Joe Fournier, it was at 180lb.
But there was a 10lb rehydration clause, meaning the two could not go over 190lb for the second weigh in just hours before the bout.
KSI, 30, went on to knock out Fournier, 40, with an accidental but illegal elbow, with the result being overturned to a no-contest.

But a rematch was snubbed so he could turn his attention to Fury, 24, who in February beat KSI’s YouTube rival Paul, 26, in Saudi Arabia.

And his great rival Paul – whose brother Logan was beaten by KSI at cruiserweight in 2019 – weighed in on the row on social media.
He said: “Tommy, I’m going to teach you a little something here.
“KSI is a bitch, he’s all f*****g talk. He fought Logan at 193lb but wants to weight drain everybody.
“He says, ‘Oh, I’m levels above everybody’ but then wants everybody to cut down to get them to as low as possible so that he can take advantage of them.

“It’s not going to happen, he’s all talk, he only want to fight disabled video gamers or guys who are f****** old and f****** elbow them in the face.”
KSI, 30, has agreed to Fury’s demand to fight at 185lb but wants another weigh in on the day to restrict their rehydration.
And the YouTuber-turned boxer warned he has until Monday to sign the deal.
Paul, 26, lost to Fury, 24, by split-decision in their Saudi Arabia grudge match in February but scored a knockdown in the eighth and final round.

The American snubbed a rematch to instead return on August 5 in Texas against Nate Diaz, 38.
But both have agreed to rematch in October if talks with KSI collapse and Paul has already started the war of words.
He said: “Tommy as my son, I’m disappointed in you, man. I made you a millionaire, I made you famous.
“You haven’t said thank you. You’re a p***k, you’re a bitch, you said you would wipe me across the floor, wipe me across the canvas.
“But you’re the one that tasted the chance, you’re the one that tasted the floor in a split-decision you barely beat me.
“So after I knock out Nate Diaz, August 5th, I’m coming for you Tommy. You better be ready, I’m coming.”

I’m a former England star but I ballooned to 17 STONE at my Premier League club – I was fat and frustrated

DAVID JAMES has revealed how his mental health suffered while on the bench at Liverpool. The former England goalkeeper, 52, was at Liverpool for seven seasons between 1992 and 1999 – making 277 appearances.

However, in the 1993/94 season James lost his place in the first team and soon found both his mental and physical health to be deteriorating.
Speaking on the matter to William Hill podcast Up Front with Simon Jordan, James explained how the lack of a fitness regime saw him reach 17-stone.
He said: “I reached 17-stone, we didn’t have a fitness regime, and I was fat.
“The frustration was that I wasn’t playing to a level I felt I should be playing at.

“I’m not going to say that I should have been the best goalkeeper in the world, but I can’t think of anything that another goalkeeper has done that I couldn’t do.
“I was then out of the team for eight months in my second season – I was actually sent off at the end of the first season against Norwich, so I missed the first game of the next season and never made it back into the side under Graeme Souness.”
James, eventually found his way back into the team before leaving Liverpool for Aston Villa. He later went on to play for West Ham, Manchester City and Portsmouth in the Premier League.
In addition to his physical issues, the 53-cap Three Lion also explained how having a chat with a doctor helped him with his mental health, despite Liverpool not believing in sports psychology at the time.

James added: “I thought that I needed to change because I wasn’t in the first team, so I approached the club doctor and asked if he knew a sports psychologist.
“He said that Liverpool didn’t believe in that, but I’ll have a look for you.
“So, this doctor got someone to come over and we sat in my kitchen for two hours – and I wasn’t one for inviting people into my house for private space and all that – so then when I went into work the next day, I went to the doctor and said that he was amazing.
“He said that he wasn’t a sports psychologist, I don’t know what he did, but that two-hour conversation made things change.
“The reason these people were having a go at me was that I wasn’t being the professional I could have been.
“So when they were calling me ‘Calamity James’, saying I was addicted to Xbox, and that I couldn’t catch a cold, it was a case of ‘I know I can’, but why am I not doing that?”
Since retiring in 2015, James has gone on to appear on Strictly Come Dancing and feature in Soccer Aid.
