Football’s coronavirus crisis is bad news for ticket touts… and not many hearts will bleed for them

HARD times for ticket touts  — and not many hearts will be bleeding on their account.
They have long been a plague. It is ironic that, at the time of coronavirus, they’ve caught a very nasty cold themselves.

The Competition and Markets Authority believe ticket touts are flocking to ViagogoCredit: Alamy

Touts will rise from their beds in time, you can be sure of that.
But the absence of big events — like Premier League football — has hit them badly and Viagogo have now inadvertently made it worse.
Viagogo is the leading company touts use. That’s according to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) who secured a court order to force the service to  publish details of its most prolific sellers.

Touts are turning to other means of making cash with Prem games currently played behind closed doorsCredit: Alamy
It proved to be a haven for touts rather than a service for fans who find they can’t use a ticket and want to recoup their money.

Business was so good that just before the last lockdown Viagogo bought rival StubHub for £3billion.
Yes, that’s the kind of money that reselling makes a company worth.
Now in classic fashion, the biter has bitten its own bottom.
Have no sympathy for Viagogo on this count or, in passing, any other.

Previously they had been warned by the CMA not to go ahead with the proposed buyout and, instead of listening, put up two fingers.
They might well be able to do this to dissatisfied punters but this time they took on a heavyweight.
And the CMA told them they would have to unpick the deal and sell StubHub.
That pair-up would have created a 90 per cent  monopoly of the  business in the United Kingdom, and probably meant  a further screwing of fans desperate to see and hear their heroes in real life.
Touts are an infestation on football.  There are reams of legislation to outlaw them but the trade is so lucrative that outlets were bound to cash in.

Viagogo were warned not to press ahead with their £3billion purchase of rival StubhubCredit: Alamy
Viagogo took a cut of the profit and so further put up prices already boosted by the sale of the original tickets.
Which means the price to you or me has been triple-whammied — once to the first seller, once for the tout’s margin and once to Viagogo as agents.
The law rarely caught up with touts yet you couldn’t miss them at major matches.
They hung around outside grounds offering to buy or sell and, if you were lucky, you got one cheap and if they were lucky they made enough to buy the boys a round or three.
Today they are a rarer public species. The police usually moved the spivs along and occasionally charged them.

Viagogo made £350 million from selling 750,000 tickets
Now they are safely locked into Viagogo and others.
The company pretend, in their own  language, that among the original sellers are “a range of businesses such as event organisers, hospitality agents, and tier 1 football clubs.”
They should name names — but in their grubby, secretive world they dare not.
Known offenders would soon be subjects of contempt, or the courts.
Rogue employees are a much more certain source.

Viagogo spent £5 million on advertising listings on GoogleCredit: Alamy
No question, there is a need for businesses which link ticket-hunting fans with sellers.
But not like Viagogo, who last year sold 750,000 tickets in a market valued at around  £350million.
The company had spent £5m to appear at the head of Google advertising listings.
It was this tool that made  big-timers out of touts until the firm were temporarily banned over treatment of consumers.
That Google ban told us all we really needed to know.

Their trade thrived in the underbelly of the entertainment industry.
Thanks to their wholesale  arrogance, a good marketing idea had gone rotten.

Premier League set to SCRAP controversial PPV games and broadcast every match for no extra cost until 2021

PREM clubs are set to scrap Pay Per View games for the rest of 2020.
And the experiment could be abandoned altogether as League chiefs react to a huge public backlash.

Football fans were left fuming as they had to fork out MORE money to watch their teamsCredit: EPA

SunSport revealed yesterday how the 20 clubs were to be asked to consider a PPV U-turn in the wake of the Government’s latest Covid-19 clampdown.
No formal vote was taken by today’s virtual meeting of the ‘shareholder’ clubs.
But it is expected they will announce the end of PPV games until at least after the Christmas period
The proposals could see every game after this weekend until the New Year screened across Sky, BT, Amazon and the BBC – just like they were during Project Restart.

However, clubs could still decide to stick with PPV games, but slash the price from £14.95 match down to either £9.95 or even £7.50.
League chiefs, though, are aware that asking fans to pay even more money to watch their teams during a potentially extended period when they are expected to stay in at home would be highly unpopular.
And while there will be a review of the situation in early January, clubs are on the brink of agreeing that the experiment has simply proved too unpopular to be resurrected.
This weekend’s scheduled PPV games, including Spurs’ trip to West Brom and Arsenal’s home game with Aston Villa, will still be shown on Box Office channels.

However, it is now likely that all Prem matches taking place for at least six weeks after next week’s international break will be available on non-PPV channels.

    Premier League PPV games announcement

THE Premier League has announced the latest round of fixtures shown on pay per view – costing fans £14.95.

Friday November 6 – Brighton vs Burnley, 5.30pm on Sky Sports Box Office
Saturday November 7 – Crystal Palace vs Leeds, 3pm on BT Sport Box Office
Saturday November 7 – West Ham vs Fulham, 8pm on BT Sport Box Office
Sunday November 8 – West Brom vs Spurs, 12pm on Sky Sports Box Office
Sunday November 8 – Arsenal vs Aston Villa, 8pm on Sky Sports Box Office

During Project Restart, all the remaining 92 games of last season were screened by the Prem’s domestic broadcast partners, Sky, BT, Amazon Prime and the BBC.
Prem chiefs will now sit down with the broadcasters to try to thrash out an agreement covering upcoming games.
There are a total of eight rounds of fixtures between November 21 and the end of the year plus 10 further games scheduled for January 2.

Chelsea star Kai Havertz misses Champions League win over Rennes after testing positive for coronavirus

KAI HAVERTZ missed Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Rennes after the £70million star tested positive for coronavirus.

But Havertz missed the match after being diagnosed with Covid-19.
Before kick-off at Stamford Bridge, a club statement confirmed: “Frank Lampard has confirmed Kai Havertz has tested positive for Covid-19.
“As a consequence the player is now undergoing a period of self-isolation and is not involved in tonight’s Champions League game versus Rennes.”

Chelsea have not confirmed Havertz’s condition or if he is suffering any symptoms of the illness.
But he will also miss Saturday’s game with Sheffield United and the subsequent Nations League fixtures for Germany unless he can satisfy authorities that he is no longer infectious.

The attacking midfielder, 21, had only missed one game for his new team since signing for an initial £62million in September.
Blues boss Lampard had started Havertz in every game of the club’s campaign, bar the Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham.

Although he had managed just one goal in league and Europe, netting in last month’s draw with Southampton.

Premier League clubs set for PPV U-turn as country enters second coronavirus lockdown

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs are poised to make a pay-per-view U-turn — because of lockdown.
They have been under pressure to make a decision on what to do with the games not being shown on Sky or BT after the international break.

Premier League games could be broadcast for free again this monthCredit: AFP and licensors

The top flight had been veering towards cutting the controversial £14.95-a-game charge to either £9.95 or £7.50.
But with the country now under lockdown until December 2, Prem bosses are set to suggest the best option would be a short-term return to the Project Restart situation, where all matches were available to fans.
Leicester were the only side to vote against PPV last month but other clubs have now changed their minds following a fan-led backlash.
Under league rules, any decision must be agreed by at least 14 clubs.

But there remain a number of teams, including some of the Big Six, who argue that £14.95 is more than reasonable for a “premium product”.
A final decision is not expected today, as any agreement must be squared with broadcasters.

During the end to the 2019-20 season in June and July, matches were shown on Sky, BT, the BBC and Amazon Prime.
Sky and BT in particular felt that diminished the value of their current deal, which is worth more than £1.7billon per season.

A similar scenario could see clubs hit with a demand for a further repayment on top of the £340million cost of last term’s Covid-19 chaos.

Leeds striker Rodrigo confirms positive coronavirus test and will miss the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace

LEEDS striker Rodrigo has confirmed he has tested positive for coronavirus and will miss this weekend’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.
The Elland Road side’s £35million record-signing missed Monday night’s 4-1 loss at home to Leicester.

And now he will be absent for Saturday’s clash with the Eagles after being forced to self-isolate.
Rodrigo had previously been informed he’d been in contact with someone who had returned a positive Covid-19 test.
But the former Valencia star, 29, revealed he is feeling healthy and will be cheering his team-mates on from the sofa this weekend.
Taking to Instagram, Rodrigo wrote: “Unfortunately I have tested positive for Covid-19, after being in contact with a family member who had been infected without us knowing.

“As per the protocol, I will be self isolating and will miss the Crystal Palace game.
“Both my family and I feel great.
“We are lucky enough to feel healthy and we are keeping a positive attitude.
“From home I will support Leeds and the Spanish national team as a supporter and I will be back on the pitch soon.

Government and Premier League left EFL for dead but now Rick Parry has chance to show real leadership

THE darkest hour is just before the dawn.
With winter nights, a national lockdown and the future of the oldest league in the world in doubt, the EFL are at crisis point.

Rick Parry is leading the EFL through a vital period in its historyCredit: Reuters

This has been created by the Government’s refusal to allow crowds back into stadiums and the unwillingness to provide any state aid to replace the loss of club’s biggest revenue stream — the fans.
It was then compounded by the Premier League’s reluctance to bail out clubs down the pyramid without big conditions attached.
We’ve had players refusing pay cuts and the PFA calling salary caps in League One and Two unenforceable and unlawful.
Meanwhile, broadcasters are ridiculously getting rebates of TV monies, when TV is the only place live football can be seen.

Despite these incredibly bleak times, the opportunity remains for real leadership.
Rick Parry the Football League chairman, has the potential to pull the proverbial phoenix from the flame.
Project Big Picture has actually started a long overdue conversation. When he was in the Premier League, Parry proposed a 20 per cent distribution of money.
Now, through skill and chance, he’s managed to be offered 25 per cent of revenues being distributed into the EFL, alongside governance on sustainability and salvation.

Irony pervades that poacher-turned-gamekeeper Parry, who brought in parachute payments for relegated Prem teams, now describes them as “an evil” needing to be eradicated.
The EFL bailout has taken too long, been badly handled and mismanaged.
Not securing decent levels of short-term funding is unforgivable.
The EFL have never valued themselves properly.
They have allowed the Prem to disappear over the horizon, while dripping down the toxic mix of inflated salaries and over-zealous ambitions to join their ranks.
Granted it is difficult but the framework of the league is ridiculous and their outlook often warped.

In 2002 when ITV Digital collapsed and nearly destroyed the EFL, what was the solution suggested for the league’s own incompetence of not getting parent company guarantees for money? March on Parliament!
In 2008 when the banking system collapsed, rules stated the only banking facilities available to EFL clubs were the High Street ‘big four’ banks. Due to the “banking crisis” they were closed for business.
I had to convince the then chairman that 72 clubs should focus on changing the rules to allow third-party funders to help.
The EFL were recently offered £290million for 20 per cent of their media rights by private equity firm TPG.
That meant the whole thing was valued at £1.5BILLION. The 20 per cent revenue, if put into a floated business, would be worth at least a billion on its own.
Now Parry has the chance to fix the problem of these leagues being undervalued. On paper, he has the credentials.

Raising £400m and creating a framework for a better-funded and managed EFL is well within grasp.

He must be saying we can do that on our own and achieve maximum value for the EFL, without handing that all away to private equity firms.
Valuations were before new distributions of football money was mooted.
Now they are three times greater, so raising £400m to bail out short-term problems and creating a framework for a better-funded and managed EFL is well within his grasp.
So, cometh the hour cometh the man. In Rick we trust?

Whyte would ‘love’ to fight Tyson Fury, reveals Hearn as Povetkin rematch postponed after Russian contracts coronavirus

DILLIAN WHYTE’S rematch to face Alexander Povetkin has been postponed until 2021 after the Russian tested positive for coronavirus.
The pair were expected to pit their wits against each other on November 21 as the Body Snatcher looked to exact revenge on the veteran KO specialist.

Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin’s rematch will not take place until next year

Whyte was looking to avenge the loss he suffered against Povetkin in AugustCredit: Instagram @dillianwhyte

Whyte floored Povetkin twice during their dust-up in August, only to be knocked out in the fifth round in one of the shocks of the year.
And Whyte will now have to wait in his bid to once again become the WBC mandatory after Povetkin was rushed to hospital.
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn tweeted the news of the postponement, while also providing information on when the rematch is set to take place.
He said: “Unfortunately we got the news today that Alexander Povetkin is in hospital after testing positive for Covid-19.

“The fight will now be rescheduled to a target date of January 30.
“An announcement on our November 21 show will be made shortly.”
Hearn then teased a potential fight between Whyte and Tyson Fury, before stating the 32-year-old would jump at the chance to face the WBC heavyweight champion.
The Gypsy King is set to fight Agit Kabayel in his homecoming bout on December 5 at the Royal Albert Hall.

Dillian Whyte v Tyson Fury anyone? 🤔
    — Eddie Hearn (@EddieHearn) November 3, 2020

But Hearn has insisted that may not be the case now as he spoke of a possible domestic dust-up.
He simply tweeted: “Dillian Whyte v Tyson Fury anyone?”
Whyte was quick to retweet his post, however fans didn’t seem eager to see the potential blockbuster bout.
One commented: “Can we just see Fury take AJ to school please. Anyone else is irrelevant.”
Another messaged: “Nah Whyte is not in the same league as Tyson, would rather him fight Dubois, a fight he’d lose too.”
Hearn has declared he has spoken to Whyte about facing Fury, as he stated: “Just to confirm, I’ve spoke to Dillian, we would accept that [Fury] fight.
“Obviously we’d have to talk about numbers, not looking to be greedy, but Whyte would love to fight Fury on Dec 5th.
“So if there’s an opportunity to do that, we’d love to do that.”

Derek Chisora has also thrown his hat into the ring to face Whyte for a third time on November 21, in what would be just three weeks after his defeat to Oleksandr Usyk.
Speaking to Hearn on Instagram, he said: “Do you want to give me that fight? I’ll take that.
“Want to give it to me? I have no bruises, I’m ready to rock and roll.
“It’s all about making history, think about it, let me know and I’ll take it.”

Barcelona vs Dynamo Kiev on brink of being axed as crisis-hit visitors only just name minimum 13-man squad

BARCELONA’S clash against Dynamo Kiev is in danger of being axed after the visitors were hit with a coronavirus outbreak.
The Ukrainian giants have 13 first-team players unavailable for their Champions League trip to Spain after recording nine positive results.

Dynamo confirmed that Georgy Tsitaishvili, Denis Garmash, Mikkel Duelund, Alexander Karavaev, Tudor Belutse and Mykola Shaparenko have all tested positive for Covid-19 this week.
Heorhiy Buschan, Vitaliy Mykolenko and Denys Boyko were all already in quarantine following previous tests.
That has left Dynamo with just a 13-man travelling squad to the Nou Camp – the minimum number established by UEFA’s health protocols.
An additional six from the club’s youth team have made the journey to Barcelona to fill up the numbers.

However, if only one more player from Dynamo’s List A tests positive then the match will be postponed.
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the six infected for the Ukrainian’s all trained with the rest of the team on Sunday.
Although the players who boarded the plane to Spain on Monday tested negative, there is a chance they could develop the disease at a later date.
Such a possibility increases the risk of potentially infecting Lionel Messi and co during the Group G clash on Wednesday evening.

Barcelona go into the third round of European fixtures leading the way on six points with Dynamo third on goal difference without a win so far.
Rescheduling the game could prove difficult with UEFA tasked with finding a new date before the cut-off point of January 28 amid a packed calendar.
The news came just a day after Liverpool’s Group D rivals Ajax were hit by 11 positive tests for coronavirus ahead of their match with FC Midtjylland.
