Does the Community Shield go to extra-time or will Man City vs Arsenal go straight to penalties if it’s a draw?

THE annual curtain raiser to the Premier League season, the Community Shield, is here! This year Treble winners’ Man City are taking on Arsenal, who finish second in the Prem.
The Community Shield at Wembley is here
Does the Community Shield go to extra-time?
No. The match goes straight to penalties after extra-time if the score is level after 90 minutes.
Since 1993, the Community Shield has gone to penalties and is not shared between the teams if it is a draw.
Between 1949 and 1991, the shield was shared 11 times.

Why are Arsenal playing in the Community Shield?
Arsenal will participate in the Wembley showpiece having finished second in the Premier League last season.
The rules of the Community Shield state that if a team wins both the Premier League and the FA Cup in the same campaign, then the division runners-up get a shot at the early silverware.
Manchester City pegged back long-term leaders Arsenal to finish top of English top-flight football for the 2022/23 campaign.
And they followed that up with a nailbiting 2-1 FA Cup final win over local rivals Manchester United.
    When is the Community Shield?

The Community Shield between Arsenal and Manchester City will take place on Sunday, August 6.
It is scheduled to get underway at 4pm BST.
Wembley Stadium is the allocated arena for this huge curtain-raiser and it can host approximately 90,000 roaring fans.

What TV channel is the Community Shield on?

The Community Shield will be broadcast LIVE on ITV 1 in the UK.
Coverage will begin at 3:15pm BST – 45 minutes before kick-off.
Mark Pougatch will be joined by Roy Keane and Emma Hayes to present the Community Shield on ITV 1. More

Watch as James Maddison stops to take selfie with pitch invader mid-game during Leicester’s win over Man City

LEICESTER CITY’S James Maddison took a break from the action in Saturday’s Community Shield clash to take a selfie with a fan who managed to get on to the Wembley pitch. The 24-year-old played 71 minutes in the game as the FA Cup winners beat Premier League champions Manchester City 1-0 thanks to a late Kelechi Iheanacho goal.

But just before the hour mark a Foxes fan spotted his chance to snap a selfie with the Leicester star.
As Maddison trotted towards the corner flag to take a set-piece, a fan managed to break past security and onto the pitch to grab a picture with the one-cap England man.
And Maddison was more than happy for the picture to take place, stopping in his tracks to smile for the camera before the fan was wheeled away by Wembley security.
The incident occurred just before the hour mark, with the score still 0-0 at Wembley.

There have been concerns in recent weeks about the security at the stadium after fans forced their way inside before the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy, and this incident only adds to those fears.
Maddison has been widely linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, as Mikel Arteta seeks a playmaker like Maddison as a long-term replacement for Mesut Ozil.
But ITV pundit Roy Keane has warned Maddison against the move, warning the former Norwich man against a switch to a side who finished below Leicester in the Premier League last season.

Speaking on ITV ahead of the Community Shield between Leicester and Manchester City, he said: “Maybe he might just fancy a bit of change, maybe just fancy a bit of London? I don’t know.
“It’s a difficult one, [Jamie] Vardy had an opportunity to go to Arsenal, he turned it down.
“He got big money, turned it down, he got big money at Leicester, let’s not kid ourselves. But Leicester, the group of players they have, they’ve [also] got a new training ground.
“If he’s leaving Leicester, I don’t think Arsenal is the right option. If I was him I’d sit tight.”
It’s believed that the Foxes are holding out for around £60million for their star man, and with three years left on his contract they’re in a very strong bargaining position.
Football London claim that homegrown talents Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Joe Willock, Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah could all be on the table in a player-plus-cash swap deal, but the Foxes are not thought to be interested in a swap deal and would prefer a lump sum.
But for now Maddison is a Leicester player and he will be hoping to add to the eight goals he scored and seven assists he provided in the 2020/21 Premier League season, as he looks to help Leicester into the top four spots after the Foxes agonisingly missed out on Champions League football in the last two seasons.

Community Shield between Man City and Leicester ‘to have 100 per cent capacity’ at Wembley with 90,000 fans allowed

THE Community Shield between Manchester City and Leicester is set to have ‘100 per cent capacity at Wembley’. The curtain-raiser for the new season will be given the go-ahead to host 90,000 fans.
Wembley’s capacity was restricted during this summer’s Euro 2020Credit: AFP
According to talkSPORT, Wembley will be able to host a sell-out crowd for the Community Shield on August 7.
Wembley was allowed at least 22,000 fans for the Euro 2020 matches held at the famous stadium this summer.
More than 60,000 fans were permitted for England’s semi-final against Denmark and the final defeat to Italy.
But the government ignored calls to increase the capacity for England’s first appearance in a European Championship final.
And the final was marred by crowd trouble with ticketless thugs breaking into the stadium.
An estimated 2,500 hooligans barged and blagged their way into the ground for the game which ended in a heartbreaking penalties defeat for England.
It was expected the Community Shield could be limited to 75 per cent capacity despite restrictions being lifted.
Restrictions were ended last Monday and The Oval was sold out for the opening men’s match in The Hundred on Thursday.

But an agreement between the Football Association and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has been reached, allowing a full house at Wembley for the Community Shield.
It will be the first time Wembley has held a full crowd since before the pandemic.
Champions Man City will face FA Cup winners Leicester with the Foxes returning to the scene of their final triumph over Chelsea.

Community Shield returns to free-to-air TV for first time in nine years with Man City to face Leicester on ITV

THE Community Shield will be broadcast on free-to-air TV for the first time in nine years with ITV to show Manchester City’s match against Leicester.Premier League champions City take on FA Cup holders Leicester at Wembley on August 7.

Leicester’s Community Shield clash against Manchester United on August 7 will be shown on ITVCredit: AP
The encounter between the two teams will take place a week before the start of the 2021-22 top-flight campaign, with the kick-off scheduled for 5pm.
BT Sport have held the rights for the traditional season curtain-raiser since 2013, but they surrendered them two years ago, along with the FA Cup rights.
The last time the Community Shield was shown on terrestrial TV was in 2012 where the Citizens beat Chelsea 3-2 at Villa Park.
And Pep Guardiola’s side will be hoping for the same outcome when ITV – who showed that tie nine years ago – broadcasts the first piece of silverware up for grabs in August.
Guardiola is eyeing up his third Community Shield having scooped the trophy in 2018 and 2019.
Meanwhile Leicester are looking to win the trophy for the first since 1971 when they beat Liverpool.
Remarkably, Leicester were only involved in that game as double winners Arsenal were involved in a pre-season tour that clashed with the fixture.
So FA Cup runners-up Liverpoool and second division champions Leicester were invited to take part.

Millie Bright helps Chelsea seal 2-0 WSL Community Shield win against Man City

GOALS from Millie Bright and Erin Cuthbert handed Chelsea the Community Shield over Manchester city after a 12-year absence from the women’s competition.
Bright broke the deadlock on 66 minutes after walloping a delicious 30-yard screamer beyond Citizens stopper Ellie Roebuck.

The long-awaited opener came just FOUR minutes after City legend Jill Scott was sent packing after receiving a second yellow for a rash challenge on Ji So-Yun.
And Scottish international Cuthbert wrapped up the day for Emma Hayes’ side after unleashing a fierce drive into the roof of the net in the second minute of injury time.
Gareth Taylor’s side were let off very early on when Sam Kerr scuppered a peach of a chance and poked her effort into the side netting after breaking free in front of goal.
The Sky Blues bit back but Georgia Stanway was snaffled up just as she was about to pull the trigger from 12-yards.

The young forward tried her luck again from the edge of the box but stung the hands of Chelsea stopper Ann-Katrin Berger.
City had a goal disallowed when ex-Everton ace Chloe Kelly charged through three Blues defenders and squared to substitute Janine Beckie who tapped it in – but the flag went up.

Taylor’s side kept their foot firmly on the pedal as Georgia Stanway forced Berger into a sublime save.
The German keeper palmed the ball onto an onrushing Kelly who rifled an effort into the near post.

Moments after the break, star striker Kerr fluffed her lines again and flashed an effort agonizingly wide of the near post following a brilliant run from Fran Kirby.

Stanway almost put the Citizens ahead but dragged an effort wide.
And it was certainly proving a fiery affair with tackles flying in from both sides before Scott was sent off.
City cranked up some late pressure but it was game over when Cuthbert hammered the final nail in their coffin in the dying moments.
