IT’S that time of year in the Premier League.Despite the cold weather, the heat on the managers could not be more intense as we head into the hectic Christmas-New Year period.
Pressure is mounting on under-fire bosses such as Erik ten Hag and Mauricio PochettinoCredit: AP
Games come thick and fast and a few bad results could see some trigger-happy owners taking aim.
With that in mind, there are a number of top managers who are without a job who could be snapped up as replacements.
They include Champions League and Premier League title winners.
Here, we take a look at 10 notable out of work bosses who a club could turn to…

    Graham Potter

Graham Potter has been without a club since being sacked by Chelsea in April after having the worst win rate of any permanent manager in the club’s history.
However, Potter has already proven himself capable of leading a project forward, with his time at Ostersunds and Brighton clear examples of this.
And with Chelsea still in disarray long after his exit, his time at Stamford Bridge is not looking quite so bad.

    Julen Lopetegui

Julen Lopetegui is one of the most recent additions to the list, having walked out on Wolves in August over frustration with the club’s lack of spending to try and stay in the top flight.
Despite less than impressive spells at Real Madrid and Spain, he showed his tactical nous by helping Wolves avoid the drop last season and guiding Sevilla to the Europa League in 2020.
    Ruud van Nistelrooy

A new addition to the senior managerial game generally, Manchester United icon Ruud van Nistelrooy managed PSV to an impressive Eredivisie season last year while also winning two trophies en route.
However, he walked out on the club with one game of the season to go citing a lack of support from the board.
    Andre Villas-Boas

Tottenham and Chelsea fans will both remember Andre Villas-Boas following his less-than-impressive spells in England.
His Marseille stint was far more successful though, guiding them into the Champions League for the first time in six years and beating Paris Saint-Germain for the first time in nine, though differences in transfer strategy ultimately saw him resign in 2021.
    Joachim Low

Joachim Low has been without a job since leaving the German national team in 2021.
He has spent 15 years at the helm, lifting football’s ultimate prize – the World Cup – in 2014 and the Uefa Confederations Cup in 2017.
    Ralph Hassenhuttl

A manager cut some from the same cloth as Jurgen Klopp who favours the “Gegenpressing” style of football, Ralph Hassenhuttl had impressive spells in Germany’s lower tiers before guiding RB Leipzig to second place in their first-ever Bundesliga season.
A nearly five-year spell at Southampton would follow, where he would help the Saints avoid Premier League relegation despite the club’s best players being poached without being properly replaced before he was sacked in November 2022.
    Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been without a job since his sacking at Man Utd in late 2021.
A second-place finish in the league and making it to the Europa League final the season before counted for nothing as he was sacked after the club’s form fell off a cliff.
Those achievements in light of United’s recent fall from grace are looking all the more impressive however.
    Hansi Flick

Hansi Flick has had a short but sweet club managerial career at the top of football, winning the Treble in 2020 for just the second time in Bayern Munich’s history.
However, after leaving them for the German national team as Low’s successor, Flick made history by becoming the first-ever boss to be sacked from the position.

    Zinedine Zidane
Zinedine Zidane has hinted he will be returning to management soonCredit: AFP
Having won the Champions League an unprecedented three times in a row with Real Madrid, it beggars belief how Zinedine Zidane has not returned to management yet despite heavy links.
Between 2016 and 2021 – which accompanied a short break – Zidane won three Champions League titles and two LaLiga titles but he has recently hinted at his possible return, telling RMC Sport in October: “I will be back soon. Wait, wait a little bit.” More

And as the Dutch model again conquered social media, one concerned admirer asked: “Isn’t it exhausting to be slaying 24/7?”
Cindy crouched in the giant designer-label carrier bag for one photo and held it up in front of her for another as she grinned mischievously.
It’s a dramatic reduction in clothing from a recent snap of the 25-year-old in a winter coat in the style of wicked Disney character Cruella De Vil.
And fans found more than 101 reasons to praise her new minimalist look after her Xmas shopping outing.
One observer joked: “This is my bag. I lost it. Whoever finds it should contact me through this account. It’s the most precious thing I own.”
The partner of Everton’s ex-England midfielder Alli was also called a “queen” and an “absolute beauty” by her 7.1million Instagram followers.
And another fan confessed to being “obsessed w u”.
Cindy also inspired a Christmas wish as one enthusiast posted: “I want you under my tree.”

The wildest footballers’ Christmas parties, from dwarf-tossing to fancy dress and shocking all-night benders

‘TIS the season to be jolly, and if you are a footballer, potentially to get yourself in a whole lot of bother. The busy Christmas period of football is nearly among us, with clubs all around the land playing fixtures around the clock.
Footballers’ Christmas parties can often be raucous affairsCredit: PA:Empics Sport
Fancy dress, as seen on Arsenal’s stars, is often a priorityCredit: Instagram @kierangibbs
But before then, some will indulge in a shenanigans of a festive party.
Often, in the past, these have gone very wrong.
From the extremely un-PC activity of dwarf-tossing to raucous all-night benders, these stars let their hair down maybe a little too much.
    Chelsea, 1994
When notorious hardman Vinnie Jones is organising your Christmas party, expect fireworks.
    Read more football news
But no one would have expected dwarf-tossing.
Vinnie organised a lock-in at a West London boozer for a Chelsea party in 1994.
As talkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino explained: “The idea was to pick up a dwarf and hurl him as far as you could.
“I had a go, but I can’t remember how I did. They were heavier than I expected.”

    Liverpool, 1990s
Liverpool were the dominant force of football in the late 80s and early 90s.
John Barnes, Steve McMahon, Ian Rush and Co enjoyed plenty of success on the pitch.
Off it, they took fancy dress to another (controversial) level, with David Burrows once dressing up as Adolf Hitler.
But, it was Barnes dressed up as a Ku Klux Klan member for one Christmas party that really took the biscuit.
Speaking to BT Sport, legendary keeper Bruce Grobbelaar revealed about one night out: “There was a fellow in a white outfit with a pointy hat who was John Barnes, (he was) the Ku Klux Klan.”
Another tale recounts Steve McMahon minding the door of the venue, when he was confronted by a man wearing a white sheet.
“You can’t come in like that. John Barnes is in there,” McMahon is believed to have said.
“No,” said the man pulling off his hood. “He’s in here.”
Absolutely and I’d do it again… and go as Hitler to a fancy dress party.. fancy dress parties are there for you to make fun of people you go as and the kkk and Hitler are figures to be ridiculed so I see no problem in that… I wouldn’t go as kunta kinte with chains on…— John Barnes (@officialbarnesy) January 23, 2020

    Arsenal, 1996
Arsene Wenger had just landed at the club, while Patrick Vieira was one of his first signings.
But initially the Frenchman couldn’t put a curb on Arsenal’s Christmas bash of ’96 and the drinking culture that ran through the club.
“The tradition was we would go out and get absolutely leathered and then recover on our day off,” Dixon revealed to FourFourTwo.
However, Vieira turned up to the shindig with his car keys in hand and planned on having a nice meal and a glass of wine before getting an early night.
“The boys weren’t having that,” Dixon said.
“So we took his keys from him, and soon Patrick was loving it and dancing on the tables.”

    Newcastle, 1998
As a tradition, everyone loves a Secret Santa.
Well, everyone except perhaps Duncan Ferguson, Dietmar Hamann and bald Georgian Temuri Ketsbaia when they attended Newcastle’s 1998 party.
The gifts were handed out – but they were in incredibly poor taste.
Ferguson was handed a prison shirt, referencing time he spent behind bards, German legend Hamann was given a copy of Mein Kampf, while Ketsbaia received a comb.
Alessandro Pistone opened up his present to reveal a sheep’s heart that questioned his lack of commitment.
“I’m sure it was a joke,” the Italian unconvincingly said.

When you’ve got Joey Barton, there’s always a danger of things getting out of hand.
The clue that something could boil over could have been who Barton chose to dress up as… Jimmy Saville.
Armed with a cigar, Barton then got into an altercation with youth player Jamie Tandy at a Manchester hotspot.
He used the lit cigar as a weapon, stubbing it out on the youngster’s eye.
Barton was reprimanded by the club and fined six weeks wages.
Tandy would later claim the incident ruined his career.

    Man Utd, 2007
Party-pooper Sir Alex Ferguson banned Christmas parties from 2007 onwards. And this is why.
Several of the Man Utd team enjoyed a 13-hour bender in Manchester, which included a trip to Long Legs strip club, as well as some eardrum-splitting drunken-singing at a karaoke bar.
It was claimed that some players spent up to £4,000 on their night out.
Wags were barred from attending, with witnesses saying the stars were wild and out of control.
It must have helped for team morale, though, because the Red Devils would go on to win the Premier League and Champions League.

    Tottenham, 2009
In 2009, Robbie Keane tried to pull the wool over Harry Redknapp’s eyes.
He told the then Spurs gaffer he was taking his teammates to Dublin for a golf trip.
But he wasn’t. Instead, they went on a pub crawl – taking in The Big Smoke’s brilliant drinking holes.
Redknapp found out and went “mad”, according to Peter Crouch in his book.
The 16 players involved were all fined £20,000.
Redknapp said: “Wednesday was their day off and Robbie told me they were going to Dublin to play golf. I had no problem with that.

“I am not happy and it will be dealt with, and dealt with severely.
“I was shocked when I heard about it. I don’t see why parties should happen in today’s football – they’re more trouble than they’re worth.”

For clarity, you don’t have to predict the exact outcomes of all five games to land the top prize – that would be asking too much – you simply have to outscore your rivals, meaning somebody must win.
Some of our previous winners this season landed amazing prizes having submitted their predictions in ten seconds through sheer gut instinct – it takes no time at all to play and it’s completely free.
Check out our predictions for Matchweek 18 below…
    Manchester City v Crystal Palace
The Eagles have been something of a bogey team for Pep Guardiola’s side in recent times – at least relative to the other bottom-half teams.
However, Roy Hodgson’s side aren’t particularly well equipped for a trip to the Etihad right now having lost four of their last five games.
Granted, they gave Liverpool a decent contest last time out but with several key players injured and recent defeats to Everton, Luton and Bournemouth fresh in the mind, a comfortable home win seems likely on Saturday.

At this stage, Erling Haaland isn’t expected to feature at the weekend but the treble winners still have plenty of firepower at their disposal.
Only Sheffield United have scored fewer league goals than Palace this season so we’re backing an overdue City clean sheet.
Our Prediction: 2-0 to Man City

    Burnley v Everton
Roll up, roll up, it’s the Sean Dyche derby!
The Clarets have mustered just eight points from 16 games since they returned to the top flight, although half of those have come in their last three outings in fairness.
The Toffees are only two places above Burnley in the table but that’s because of their ten-point deduction, without punishment they would be in the top half.
Everton have beaten Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and Chelsea this month without conceding a single goal.
Dyche’s side also boast the fifth-best away record in the league this term.
    Our Prediction: 2-0 to Everton
    InevitableCredit: GETTY
    Arsenal v Brighton
Roberto De Zerbi’s enterprising outfit have scored the same number of league goals as the Gunners, Newcastle and Tottenham in 2023/24 but they’ve also conceded more goals than Fulham, Wolves, Palace and Forest.
The Seagulls are yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet this season but they’ve also scored in every game they’ve played – we’re looking at both teams to score as a foundation for this prediction.
Arsenal came unstuck at Villa Park last weekend, but doesn’t every team?
Prior to that, Mikel Arteta’s side had won four league games in a row.
Brighton have a modest record on the road this season having taken ten points from seven away days – with 16 goals conceded.
    Our Prediction: 3-1 to Arsenal
Dream Team’s second-best player this seasonCredit: Getty
    West Ham v Wolves
The Hammers completed a classic smash-and-grab against Tottenham a week ago but the celebrations were cut brutally short when they lost 5-0 to Fulham on Sunday.
With progression to the Europa League knockouts already assured, David Moyes may opt to give several key players a much-needed rest against Freiburg this evening ahead of Wolves’ visit to East London.
Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta make up the mainstays of a threatening attack but West Ham have actually conceded more league goals than they’ve scored this season.
Pedro Neto’s absence hinders the dynamism of Gary O’Neil’s attack but Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan are not to be underestimated.
That being said, Wolves’ recent results (1-0 win over Burnley, 1-1 draw with Forest) have been very: last on Match of the Day.
    Our Prediction: 1-1 draw
    Under pressureCredit: Getty
    Liverpool v Manchester United
    The big one.
In November, there was a sense that the Red Devils’ results flattered them as even their most partisan supporters acknowledged flaws in the performances.
This month, things have evened out with three losses from four games in all competitions, including a humbling 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
Fans will be fearing a thorough thrashing at Anfield on Sunday amid injury absentees – Bruno Fernandes is also suspended for the big clash.
Jurgen Klopp’s men haven’t been at their fluent best of late, nonetheless, they’ve risen to the top of the table by virtue of their 100% home record.
Liverpool have won all seven league games at Anfield this campaign, scoring 21 goals and conceding five.
    Our Prediction: 3-0 Liverpool win

The referee had another role while he was officiating as he was also the social secretary.
In this role, he would be responsible for organising the league’s referee’s Christmas bash.
While he did not reveal precise details about went on, Winter insisted that they would not be able to get away with their antics in today’s world.

But the Republic of Ireland great is adamant gifts are out of the question as they are nothing but “stress”.
