And United bizarrely chose to make the huge announcement on Christmas Eve – something slammed by Old Trafford legend Neville.
He posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Manchester United 2023 has been a disgrace to the end.
“The timing of this is truly awful and no functioning organisation would even think about it.
“Anyway all the very best to Jim Ratcliffe and I hope he can somehow work out a way to get the club right again and back to being something respectable on and off the pitch.”

And Neville’s fury was echoed by fans, as one said: “It’s reason why Manchester United has fallen off so bad , for a big club like us it’s insane how bad we are run.”
    Another added: “Complete mismanagement.”
One fumed: “Neville is right. Putting the news out on Xmas eve means less scrutiny and questions about the deal.

The Glazers first put the club up for sale a year ago but failed to agree to selling their entire share.
Their demands led to rival Sheikh Jassim pulling out of the race but it did not deter Ratcliffe, who plans to take a hands-on approach to running the club.
He is set to be in charge of football operations and has been desperate to get his feet under the table for some time with Man Utd enduring a difficult season.
Ratcliffe has already fired chief executive Richard Arnold and director of football John Murtough could follow suit.
Ex-Juventus CEO Jean-Claude Blanc, Crystal Palace director Dougie Freedman and Monaco transfer guru Paul Mitchell have emerged as possible replacements. More

I’m ex-Premier League star who got into a brawl at Christmas party, then I fought on Evander Holyfield’s undercard

IT’S the season of good cheer, and that’s been the case for Premier League footballers over the past weeks as they let loose at club Christmas parties before a huge festive fixture list. But these events can often get out of hand, as was the case with one Premier League star who ended up sacked as a result of his antics at his club’s celebrations.

Tofting would then go on to fight on the undercard of an Evander Holyfield fightCredit: Getty
Denmark midfielder Stig Tofting, 54, arrived at Bolton Wanderers in 2002 with his fair share of baggage, having been given a suspended jail sentence for assault in 1999.
Then when he was on the books of Sam Allardyce’s side he was sent to prison for four months after headbutting a Copenhagen cafe owner during Denmark’s post-2002 World Cup celebrations.
That incident led to his Bolton contract being shortened and his eventual release in June 2003.
After a spell in China, Tofting moved back to his homeland and joined AGF Aarhus in 2004.

However, during a Christmas lunch, he was reported to have punched four of his team-mates after his shirt was ripped.
In a 2018 interview with the Daily Mail, Tofting did his best to play down the incident.
The former midfield enforcer, who was nicknamed The Lawnmower for covering every blade of grass on the field, said: “The Rumble in the Jungle? One of my team-mates tore my shirt, so we had a fight.
“There was a clause in my contract that, if I did something to harm the club, they could sack me. So they sacked me.”

Though Tofting was plagued by controversy off the pitch during his playing days, he has enjoyed a successful post-playing career as a pundit in Denmark.
And he also entered into the world of celebrity boxing.
The Dane, who won his first fight against a reality TV star in eight seconds, said: “He was nothing, my little boy could have knocked him out.”
However, in his second bout, Tofting would fight on the undercard of former undisputed heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield.
He said: “My opponent was 15 kilos heavier and he used to box.
“I knocked him down in the first round. I should have finished him, I had him.
“It went four rounds and it was a draw, my perfect record gone! But to get in that ring, it’s terrifying.”
    CHILDHOOD TRAUMA
Many of Tofting’s violent outbursts may be explained by the childhood trauma of his father shooting his mother and then killing himself when he was just 13.
But today he has managed to make his peace with the horrific incident as best he can, and even now has a tattoo saying ‘No Regrets’ across his chest.
Tofting said: “I learned to live with the memory of that day.
“In that situation, I could not do anything. There were two other possibilities — if I had been at home, maybe I could have prevented it, but if not, I could have gone as well, and I wouldn’t be here now.”
Interestingly, one of the few people able to intimidate him after he endured such a tough life was ex-boss Sam Allardyce.
Tofting commented: “My first game against West Ham, we came in at half-time and he was angry.
“I remember his hands, twice as big as mine. He punched the tactics board and kicked the bag of balls. He was screaming. I liked it.

“I was trying not to laugh, I had my mouth inside my shirt. I thought, ‘Oh f***, if he sees me he’s going to kick my a***’.
“We won 1-0! I thought, ‘I’m in the right place here’.”

Brits watching Boxing Day game love snacking on festive leftovers & taking a break from the family, survey finds

Boxing Day football is a beloved annual tradition – but are you an expert when it comes to results from years gone by?This tricky quiz will separate the Santa Stattos from the plain old turkeys and promises to test even the most committed footie fans.
32 per cent of football fans will tune into women’s football this festive periodCredit: Getty
A poll found the best things about Boxing Day football are being able to snack on festive leftovers, almost every team being in action – and having an excuse to take a break from the family.
A survey of 2,000 football fans found that many love the congested calendar around Christmas as they watch their team several times over the festive break.
23 per cent of fans were delighted at the sheer number of games while another 23 per cent were happy to say goodbye to “Christmassy TV finally”.
While 12 per cent relish watching games with the anticipation of the January transfer window about to open.

Other reasons included 14 per cent of football fans using the football as the perfect excuse to get a “break” from the family – while 9 per cent were happy to see their team get a runout.
A spokesperson for Lottoland’s Sportsbook, which commissioned the research, said: “Boxing Day is a sacred time for football fans.
“While players and managers might occasionally moan about having to miss out on the Christmas pudding with games kicking off left right and centre, fans love it.
“It’s not just the matches on the 26th, the festive period as a whole is jam-packed with games to watch, so there are plenty of opportunities to have a ‘break’ from the family as so many seem to want.”
    Most read in Football
On average, footie fans will watch five games live throughout December – one every six days – although some will sit through 10 or more.
According to the survey over a third of fans will be placing bets on matches over the festive period, with 28 per cent believing they are luckier with their wins during the Christmas period.
More than half will use the opportunity to bond with family members over matches, with 32 per cent more likely to watch games their team isn’t even playing in, just because they’re on.
For one in four, watching football on December 26th is simply more enjoyable than any other time of year, with 54 per cent saying it even makes them proud to be British.
While 59 per cent will catch a match on TV, 15 per cent will don hats and scarves to watch a game live.
Around a tenth will head to the pub, while a similar figure will settle down at a relative’s house to watch some footballing action.
However, 28 per cent admitted the prospect of their team losing could ruin the entire festive period for them.
It also emerged that 43 per cent confessed to having no sympathy at all for Premier League footballers who have to play a match on December 26th, when most of the rest of the nation has the day off.
The study carried out via OnePoll, found 34 per cent of people claim their partner knows full well not to make any social plans on Boxing Day – as it’s going to be devoted to football.
And it’s not only the men’s game captivating fans over the festive period, with 32 per cent planning on tuning into women’s football.
Lottoland’s spokesperson added: “From December 1st right through to New Year’s Day, the festive period is one of the most storied in the football calendar.
    Read more on The Sun
“And it’s no surprise to see that so many football fans will be betting on the action over Christmas, though the fact that nearly a third think it’s a ‘lucky’ time of year for them is interesting indeed.
“Perhaps it’s something about the magic of Christmas, but either way, here’s hoping for lots of Sportsbook wins this Boxing Day.”

It’s not clear, however, exactly how the former Inter Milan man got his festive injury.
Icardi collided with the goalpost in the first half while challenging for the ball, although he also had his face partially scraped by an opposition boot in another incident.
Icardi’s black eye would, in normal circumstances, ruin an Xmas day family photo.
Although Nara made sure her other half wasn’t out of place by giving herself a black eye – albeit it a fake one.
