Ex-Liverpool ace Jay Spearing spends his Christmas in hospital as he is diagnosed with Addison’s disease

FORMER Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing had to spend part of Christmas in hospital after being diagnosed with Addison’s disease. The 34-year-old, who now works as a coach for the Merseyside club, was told to “urgently” attend hospital to avoid his body shutting down.

This came after he had blood tests conducted on December 24.
After further investigating, doctors worked out it was Addison’s disease – an uncommon illness which is the result of someone’s body failing to produce enough of certain hormones.
It can cause fatigue, muscle weakness, low mood, loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss.
Addison’s disease is most common between the ages of 30 and 50, with women more susceptible to the adrenal insufficiency.
READ MORE LIVERPOOL NEWSWhat is Addison’s disease?

Addison’s disease is a rare illness affecting the adrenal glands, which produce the essential hormones cortisol and aldosterone.
The disease, usually a result of problems with the immune system, damages the gland and prevents it from producing enough of either of the hormones.
Only around 9,000 people have the disorder in the UK, with more than 300 new cases diagnosed each year.
Symptoms include fatigue, muscle weakness, low mood, loss of appetite or unintentional weight loss and increased thirst.
It is treated with medicine to replace the missing hormones, which must be taken for the rest of the sufferer’s life.

It can be a life-threatening condition, but is often not discovered until weeks and months after the first symptoms.
Speaking on Instagram, Spearing said: “My first Christmas off in 17 years was a little different than I expected.
“After blood tests with the club on Christmas Eve I was told I needed to attend hospital urgently before my body started shutting down. I was potentially hours/days away from going into something called adrenal crisis.
“After more observations and tests were carried out, they diagnosed me with Addison’s disease.
    Most read in Football
“It’s taken me a minute to get my head around it but I am thankful that now it’s been diagnosed it can be controlled and managed through hormone replacement treatment and it’s not something that I will allow to affect or dictate my life.
“Thinking back, I have been ignoring symptoms and changes in my body for over a year without it being checked. If I didn’t get this checked when I did things could have turned out very differently.
“Moral of the story, don’t ignore changes in your body, no matter how small. Get them checked out!”
Spearing came through Liverpool’s youth set-up and made his first-team debut in 2008.
He left in 2013 and went on to play for Bolton, Blackburn, Blackpool and Tranmere.
Then in June he returned to Liverpool as an U18 coach and an over-aged player for the U21s.
In September, he featured for the U21s in their EFL Trophy clash against Rochdale. More

I was shocked when football fans tried to grab Dan Burn’s shirt off of my son, 11, after the player threw it to him

A DAD has revealed his shock after football fans tried to grab Dan Burn’s shirt off of his 11-year-old son.Newcastle fan Nathan Junior Surrey, known as NJ, was at his side’s Boxing Day match against Leicester with his dad as a Christmas present.
A young Newcastle fan poses proudly with the jersey
Footage shows the shirt being grabbed from NJ but he got the jersey in the end
NJ is a huge Newcastle fan and loved trying on Burn’s shirt
Goals from Chris Wood, Miguel Almiron and Joelinton sent Toon up to lofty second in the Premier League after a dominant performance.
And as the game ended Magpie stars Joelinton, Bruno Guimarães and Dan Burn chucked their tops to the fans after a 3-0 win.
But it sparked bedlam as supporters began tussling over Burn’s shirt.
NJ, 11, managed to catch the defender’s shirt only to be tackled by adult supporters desperate to get their hands on it themselves.

In a video posted on Twitter a grown woman can be seen trying to wrestle the black and white top from the schoolboy’s hands.

A stocky middle aged man also appeared to be grabbing the shirt but was thought to be helping NJ get the jersey back.
Stewards finally intervened to resolve the dispute as the lucky schoolboy ended up with the shirt.

NJ’s dad, Nathan, a 39-year-old landscape gardener, said: “NJ was standing on the rail shouting ‘give us your shirt’. Then Dan Burn pointed at him and gave the top to the steward who threw it into the crowd.
“An older woman grabbed it and started tugging on it, then the man in the middle, who she was with, also snatched it but he said he was getting it for NJ.
He continued: “He’s a huge Newcastle fan. We go to every game but this was his second away game.
“His uncle got him the tickets for Christmas.”
The father-of-three claims he doesn’t want the other fans involved in the tussle to receive any backlash.
Nathan added: “I don’t want anyone to be slated, everyone gets carried away and anyone would try to grab the shirt.
“The man in the middle actually helped us because he allowed NJ to go in front of him for the game.
“If the steward hadn’t broken it up and got the shirt it may have ripped or he wouldn’t have got it.
“The players don’t know what it means to the kids to have their shirts.
“Everyone says he’s lucky to have caught the shirt but it’s persistence.
“He’s always there early and stays late so the players recognise him.”
The young fanatic says he is going to frame the shirt – and will keep the memento from his hero forever.
And loyal supporter NJ also revealed he already has a pair of gloves worn by goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka.
NJ, who has owned a season ticket for two years, said: “It was the best Christmas present I received.
“I was very happy. I go to every game and get there twenty minutes early to talk to the players.
“I stay after the games as well, I won’t leave until I’ve seen them.
“I go to the training ground when the players are there.
“Dan Burn is one of my favourite players. I’m going to keep the shirt for a long time.”
His mother, Stacey Surrey, a 33-year-old carer, said: “NJ is going to frame it but he won’t let me wash it first.
“It still has some mud on from the pitch.
“The footballers are heroes to kids, it’s the biggest hero he will come across.
“I can’t believe the online response, it’s on Twitter, TikTok andInstagram. It’s overwhelming.”

The Gypsy King is looking forward to Christmas with his wife Paris and his six children.
But his family were nowhere to be found as he mocked-up a Christmas card that featured some of the heavyweights he has tangled with inside and outside the ring.
Fury’s Instagram sees a Christmas-style card with the champ stood in his suit alongside five children.
But instead of his actual kids, the boxer superimposed the faces of some of his rivals over the children.

Fans were loving the surprise Christmas Eve social media post.
One said: “[Fury] really is a legend” with laughing emojis.
Another added: “I’m not a Fury fan, but I find this funny.”

A third said online: “This is pure class…. What are any of those boxers going to say?”
The 34-year-old has history with all of the men who he featured on the card, most notably Wilder who he fought in three epic contests between 2018 and 2021.
The first fight is best remembered for the extraordinary final round when Fury miraculously recovered after being floored by a vicious Wilder punch.
Following that bout being scored as a draw, two more action-packed fights followed with Fury scrapping his way to two spectacular wins.

He has also beaten Whyte and Klitschko before, with the 2015 battle against the Ukrainian seeing him win the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO and the Ring titles.
A fight with Haye was meant to happen in 2013 but the Hayemaker pulled out with injury.
And Fury spent several weeks earlier this year desperately trying to put on a fight with Joshua before negotiations fell apart.
Noticeably missing from the mock-up was Fury’s other trilogy rival, Derek Chisora.
The two faced off in 2011, 2014 and earlier this month with the Gypsy King winning all three.

The outlet reports the former couple had their last dispute over the date the two boys would return with their mum as she plans to relocate to Miami on January 5.
The footballer is reportedly keen to delay the move as he is looking forward to going with his children to the Three Kings parade in Barcelona.

It comes as earlier this year, the star had described the “darkest time” of her life in an interview with magazine Elle.
Shakira and her ex-boyfriend appeared in court this month after they reached a custody settlement for their two sons following a 12-hour marathon meeting with lawyers.
And the former couple also agreed to sell their five-storey Barcelona property following their shocking split.
The next step of their divorce is to repeat the procedure in the US.
She will have to return to Barcelona for her as-yet undated £12million tax fraud trial.
The mum-of-two has been charged with six counts of tax fraud and has been warned she could be hit with an eight-year prison sentence if found guilty.
The singer previously denied rumours she’s dating a Spanish surf instructor Gorka Ezkurdia, 24.
The rumours were sparked after they were photographed together on a beach near the northern Spanish city of Santander.
But the Colombian singer-songwriter angrily rubbished suggestions she was dating again.
Shakira said: “Out of respect for my children and the vulnerable moment they are going through, I ask the media to stop the speculation.
“I do not have a partner or any interest beyond devoting myself entirely to my children.”
Pique is currently living in a penthouse apartment with his new girlfriend, 23-year-old Clara Chia.

The fight, on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr’s Sky Box Office bout against Liam Smith, comes after the New Zealander was beaten by Joe Joyce.
Parker is out for revenge in a rematch against Joyce, 37, as well as Joshua, 33, and Whyte, 34, as he looks to right previous wrongs.
He told SecondsOut: “It would be nice to get a rematch with Joshua, a rematch with Dillian Whyte and probably in the future, a rematch with Joe Joyce.
“I like to fight those guys that I lost to. Before I flew here and before I locked in this fight, my manager put in a message to Joshua’s team and asked if they wanted to have a rematch.

“We had no reply but we’re still trying to chase those fights, those rematches and it would be awesome if we can. It’s just up to each fighter and their team.”
Parker has been training over the festive period but did so over 11,000 miles away from his New Zealand home.
He is in Morecambe based at Tyson Fury’s gym and was even asked over for Christmas by the WBC champion.
Parker, 30, said to SunSport: “I was at home training but my wife saw that it had no purpose and told me ‘you need to get a fight’.

“But everyone in Morecambe is so welcoming, I have been invited to so many homes and gatherings but I can’t risk getting ill before a fight so I need to stay healthy and fit.
“Tyson has invited me over to have dinner with him and his family but I have to focus on the fact that I have left my family to work, so that is what I am here to do; work.
“I suppose I could go and buy myself a present, wrap it up myself and then act surprised when I open it on Christmas morning but I have everything I need. I just want to train and fight.

Following September’s spectacular yet punishing loss to Joe Joyce, Kiwi Parker has a comeback bout against Jack Massey confirmed for January 21 in Manchester.
That means his Christmas has been cancelled and his New Year will be almost anything but happy, after the rest of his team flew out to be with their families.
But the Gypsy King, who has been based in Morecambe almost 20 years, will open the doors to his family mansion for his training partner and friend, to make sure his only Christmas companion is not a poxy plastic tree.
