Chelsea suffer huge blow as key member of Mauricio Pochettino’s backroom staff leaves for new job

CHELSEA suffered a huge blow to their coaching staff ahead of their clash with Tottenham. The club’s head of loan moves, Andy Myers, 50, has left his role in order to join Joe Edwards’ backroom staff at Millwall.

Edwards held a prominent role on Chelsea’s coaching staff under ex-boss Frank Lampard before taking over England’s Under-20s team in August.
He was appointed Millwall manager today and his Chelsea connection has seen him poach Myers away from Stamford Bridge, meaning Chelsea will now need to appoint a new loan player technical coach.
Chelsea’s ‘loan army’ has always been a key pillar of player development at the club.
While the days are now gone when Chelsea would have 40 players on loan at one time due to new regulations – Myers was still in charge of keeping an eye on the progress of 11 players this season.

The coach was tasked with keeping a particularly close eye on the squad’s younger talents such as Harvey Vale at Bristol City, Cesare Casadei at Leicester and Omari Hutchinson at Ipswich.
There are also the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech and Kepa Arrizabalaga who are all loan players with no future at the club.
It would have been under Myers’ remit to help find these players permanent moves at the end of their loan spells.
Myers came through the youth academy at Chelsea in the 1990s before making over 100 first-team appearances for The Blues.

After retiring in 2005 he moved into coaching and became involved with the youth set-up at Cobham in 2012.
He has held a number of coaching roles at the club before he took up the role of loan manager last summer.
His departure to join Millwall brings an end to his over a decade long association with the club’s management. More

Chelsea ‘identify Thiago Silva replacement’ with club ready to cash in but they could face battle with Man Utd

CHELSEA have eyed up Jean-Clair Todibo to replace Thiago Silva – who is set to leave the Blues at the end of the season. The centre-back – who is also wanted by Manchester United – has been warned by Nice he could be up for sale in 2024.

Silva, 39, is renowned as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
The veteran has made 137 appearances for Chelsea across four seasons after moving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020.
But with his contract at Stamford Bridge set to expire next summer, the Brazilian’s future at the club is uncertain.
The West London side will be short of centre-half options if Silva departs, as Trevoh Chalobah’s Chelsea spell comes to an end too.

And with Wesley Fofana currently recovering from a knee ligament injury there is no guarantee he will be fit enough to start the 2024-25 campaign.
Todibo is potentially an excellent choice to take Silva’s spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
The ex-Barcelona star has spent just over two seasons on the French Riviera.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a successful start for Nice, playing 104 times and helping his side on their way to the Coupe de France final in 2021-22.

Despite missing out on Todibo in the summer due to Harry Maguire’s failed transfer to West Ham – the Red Devils still have an eye on the Frenchman.
Whether Nice allow the French international to depart mid-season depends on their standing in the Ligue 1 table.
So far this term, the French giants are unbeaten in 11 games and sit top of the league – a point ahead of rivals PSG.
Nice have conceded just four goals in 2023-24 thanks to the help of Todibo’s defensive prowess.
But Nice may still choose to cash in on the defender in the New Year to maximise their profits.
This would be great news for Chelsea as, like Silva, Tobido is right-footed and plays on the right-hand side of the pitch. More

I won a Premier League title with Michael Ballack at Chelsea but he always used to forget to put on underwear

FORMER Chelsea star Jon Obi Mikel has lifted the lid on some of his team-mates’ antics during his stint in a legendary Chelsea team.Mikel spent 11 years at Chelsea and played under the likes of Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti – winning a clean sweep of club trophies available to him including the Champions League and Premier League.

Terry joked that Ballack’s pants should have been binned
He played 372 times for the club before going on to play in China, Turkey and Kuwait and calling time on his career last year.
The former Nigeria international is now running his own podcast, named The Obi One Podcast where he regales tales from his time in the game.
In his most recent episode, he had fellow Chelsea legend John Terry on as guest as the two reminisced about that trophy-laden Chelsea team.
But top of the pile was a story of how Michael Ballack would leave his pants strewn around the dressing room.

Ballack made 166 appearances for the Blues between 2006 and 2010 after impressive stints at Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich.
The pair reminisced, however, about how the former midfielder would always leave his underwear lying around after getting changed.
Mikel told the Obi One Podcast: “I just remember a funny story about him when he used to come in the dressing room and get changed.
“Bally was a special character but when he walked in, he is a tall, huge guy, and he’s got a presence about him.

“Like JT, Frank (Lampard), Didier (Drogba) – all of those guys are imposing and Ballack used to walk in jamming and sometimes he would say a lot and sometimes he wouldn’t and just f*** off straight to his locker and get changed. But every time, he would forget his underwear. His underwear was always on the floor, just by his locker.”
Mikel insisted that Ballack would do this “all the time” and continued: “He would take off his clothes, his trousers and close his locker but his pants were on the floor. He would just leave it there and walk off so every time we came in Michael Ballack’s underwear would be on the floor.”
John Terry replied amid fits of laughter that they should have binned the underwear in order to keep up the “good standards” the club had at the time. More

The North Londoners have been flying high this season and are top of the table thanks to a ten-match unbeaten streak, which has seen them win a staggering eight times along the way.
The West Londoners, on the other hand, have been struggling significantly with only three wins out of ten league matches, of which they have lost four.
That has seen Mauricio Pochettino’s side left languishing in 11th place.
However, Merson still doesn’t believe Tottenham can beat Chelsea next week.

During his latest Sky Sports appearance, the pundit stated Ange Postecoglou’s side will “have a go” and that will suit the visitors as it will allow them to find space for the counter-attack.
Merson told the panel: “Chelsea fans would rather play them teams [who come at them].
“Teams that come to Chelsea and sit back, it’s a struggle. I go and watch myself. Ten behind the ball.
“I am more confident about going to Tottenham on Monday than playing Brentford at home. I am.

“Because I know Tottenham will have a go – I am going Monday. I would be shocked if Chelsea lose, I would be shocked.”
Merson left the panel stunned with his controversial take of the upcoming clash.

Merson explained: “This is the first time after a very, very long time, believe me, that Tottenham fans will be turning up expected to beat Chelsea.
“For the first time in a long time and they should. But it’s a different pressure now. They have to have a go.” More
