Chelsea ‘contact Sporting Lisbon over double transfer swoop’ but face paying more than £150MILLION for duo

CHELSEA have reportedly enquired about signing two current Sporting Lisbon stars.Mauricio Pochettino is keen to add to his squad in January and is already making moves ahead of the window re-opening.

The Blues boss is understood to have a new central defender and striker at the top of his transfer wishlist.
Sporting duo Ousmane Diomande and Viktor Gyokeres could both fill those areas, but would cost Chelsea £156million to sign.
According to The Standard, Chelsea have made contact with the Portuguese league leaders about signing both players.
Diomande has been identified as a primary defensive target, but Chelsea’s initial enquiry has been knocked back.

Sporting are said to only be willing to sell for his £69million release clause, having signed Diomande from Midtjylland for just £6.5million in January.
His former club would also be owed 20 per cent of any transfer fee, further complicating the deal.
The Ivory Coast international has already made 37 appearances for Sporting, missing just one match this term across all competitions.
Pochettino is keen to add to his defensive options following Wesley Fofana’s long-term injury.

Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah is also up for sale and Thiago Silva could leave when his contract expires in the summer.
As for Gyokeres, Sporting have again demanded the Blues meet his £87million release clause.
The Portuguese giants are reluctant to sell their top scorer, who signed from Coventry for £17million in the summer.
Gyokeres has scored 17 goals and provided eight assists in 20 appearances for Sporting, including a goal and assist against Porto on Monday.
Victor Osimhen, Ivan Toney and Club Brugge’s Antonio Nusa are also striker targets for Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Pochettino is also said to be eyeing a midfielder, but as a lower priority.
The report adds he could use Andrey Santos if he is recalled from his loan at Nottingham Forest instead of making a new signing. More

Chelsea ‘could sell Conor Gallagher to seal Ivan Toney transfer’ – and star could be worth MORE than Mudryk under FFP

CHELSEA will demand £50million for Conor Gallagher in January, according to reports.Gallagher, 23, has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in recent months despite captaining the Blues on 10 separate occasions.

Chelsea are willing to sell him next month in a bid to balance the books and comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.
And according to ESPN, they want £50m for the midfielder.
Newcastle, Tottenham and West Ham have all been linked with a move for Gallagher.
The Hammers, Spurs and Everton all failed to sign him with bids of around £40m this summer.

But a slightly higher offer next month could persuade Chelsea to green-light a sale.
The Blues are determined to sign a new striker in January, with Ivan Toney understood to be on Mauricio Pochettino’s transfer wishlist.
However, they will need to raise funds by selling players first – and offloading Gallagher would come with the most efficient financial benefits because he is a home-grown player.
Brentford want up to £80m for Toney, with Arsenal also interested.

Gallagher has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent players this season
Gallagher has been with the Blues since the age of eight.
After graduating from Chelsea’s academy he was sent out on loan four times before finally breaking into the first team last year.
The midfielder has since made 65 appearances for the West London side.
He was handed the captain’s armband for the first time in September following injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell.
And Pochettino is now eager for him to stay at the club.
Discussing Gallagher’s future, the Chelsea boss said: “It is a decision between the player and the club, to be or not to be.
“He is in the starting XI nearly every game and one of the captains. For me, he is the type of player that the club need to have.
“He is important because of his Chelsea values. He came from the academy, he loves the club and he is very committed.
“You can see that on the pitch – he runs, he plays, he fights. He does everything to win. He is a really important player that the coaching staff want to have on the team.” More

Carabao Cup semi-final draw in full: Liverpool handed tough trip to West London as Chelsea look to make it to Wembley

LIVERPOOL will play Fulham in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup with Middlesbrough up against Chelsea. The first legs of the semis will take place in the week commencing January 8.

The ties will be decided in the second leg in the week commencing January 22.
Liverpool and Middlesbrough were both handed home draws for the first leg of their semi-finals.
Chelsea will have to travel to Teeside before a home second leg at Stamford Bridge, while Fulham visit Anfield.
It’s the last time the semi-finals will be decided over two legs – with the semis becoming one legged next season to reduce fixture congestion.
Liverpool were the standout performers in the cup’s quarter-finals, producing a stunning 5-1 victory over West Ham this evening.
Chelsea, meanwhile, needed penalties to make it past Newcastle on Tuesday evening.
That was also the case for Fulham, who had to go the distance with Everton at Goodison Park to make it to the semis, winning their shoot-out 7-6.
Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough are the only Championship team left in the competition, and will be looking to produce an upset over two legs.

Chelsea’s form this season has been patchy at best, but manager Mauricio Pochettino will be desperate to win his first piece of silverware in England with The Blues.
Liverpool will be overwhelming favourites for the trophy given their performances in the league this season, which could see them top at Christmas if they beat Arsenal on Saturday.
Chelsea’s historic pedigree with silverware will have them favoured by some, but they’re only one point above Fulham in the Prem.
Middlesbrough will be massive outsiders as the only Championship club remaining.
But Michael Carrick will fancy a chance to show Man Utd what he can do at the highest level after being snubbed for the permanent Old Trafford job when he was caretaker.
Both Chelsea and Liverpool will likely be grateful to have been kept apart, and will have their fingers crossed that the other will lose in their respective semi-final ties.
Father and son duo Harry and Jamie Redknapp conducted the draw live on Sky Sports after analysing Liverpool’s rout of West Ham. More

Chelsea aim to beat Newcastle to big-money transfer of Salzburg ace Amar Dedic but could also face battle with Mourinho

CHELSEA must beat off strong competition from former manager Jose Mourinho to land Bosnian wonderkid Amar Dedic. But Newcastle are also in the transfer tussle for the 21-year-old Red Bull Salzburg star.
Amar Dedic is a transfer target for Chelsea, Newcastle and RomaCredit: Getty
And Arsenal, Barcelona and Inter Milan have all made approaches for the exciting right-back, too.
SunSport can now reveal Chelsea have been keeping a close eye on Dedic’s progress ahead of the January transfer window.
The Blues sent a scout to all of his Champions League games this season – plus at least four league matches since November as well as Euro 2024 qualifiers for Bosnia.
Similarly, Newcastle are tracking 12-cap Dedic and had someone in the stands at Red Bull Salzburg’s last three Champions League games plus a few Bosnia fixtures.

Toon want to add a versatile defender to provide cover and competition for Kieran Trippier and the left-backs when needed – especially if Lewis Hall ends up returning to Chelsea in the summer.
And Eddie Howe could be boosted by the fact that Dedic has the same agent as Magpies ace Joelinton.
Dedic is a versatile right-back who can play across the defence – including on the left – and is already the club captain.
He came through the youth academy at Red Bull Salzburg and was on the club’s books when Erling Haaland spent two years with the Austrian giants before joining Borussia Dortmund – although Dedic was out on loan with Liefering throughout that time.

However, he is now impressing in the first team at the Red Bull Arena.
And his performances prompted a £21.5million bid from Roma last summer, with Mourinho a huge fan and desperate to land him.
Salzburg rejected the offer, though, and Dedic continues to be a key man in the team, helping Gerhard Struber’s side sit top of the Austrian Bundesliga once again.
However, they face a tough task trying to keep hold of their rising star in 2024.
Roma remain interested but could pull out of the chase because Mourinho’s current contract expires at the end of the season – and therefore the Serie A side will be hesitant to prioritise the Portuguese’s targets.
Dedic signed a new contract in January, tying him down with the Austrian champions until 2027.
The top talent has scored five and assisted three in 25 appearances this season – and is part of a defence that has conceded just ten goals in the league so far.

Chelsea’s Benoit Badiashile already lined up for shock transfer exit less than 12 months after £35m move from Monaco

There is interest from Lyon in Benoit BadiashileCredit: Getty
But he could already be set for a move back to Ligue 1 with Lyon making him a “priority” target, claim Foot Mercato.
The French giants have at least £45million to spend in next month’s transfer window and they are desperate for additions amid their shock relegation battle.
Lyon are seven-time winners of the title but currently sit 16th – just two points off the bottom of the table.
Therefore, they are determined to bolster their defence and Badiashile is on their radar.

The Frenchman has played 16 times for Chelsea, scoring one goal.
He has struggled for minutes this season, making just five appearances due to injury problems.
But Mauricio Pochettino will not want to lose the 22-year-old as he has now recovered and started four of the Blues’ last five Premier League games.
Speculation suggests Badiashile is willing to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge and he has six-and-a-half years left on his contract.

Newcastle allowed to field Chelsea’s OWN player against them after using little known rule for Carabao Cup clash

Carabao Cup rules dictate that loan players are allowed to play against their parent club provided permission has been granted by the team that owns him.
And on this occasion, the necessary requirements have been met for the versatile 19-year-old to play in west London.
This comes after the England Under-21 international was ruled ineligible for Newcastle’s 4-1 victory against Chelsea at St James’ Park last month but the rules are different in the Premier League.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have extra reason to allow the left-back to compete against them.

The Toon signed Hall last summer on loan with a £34million obligation to buy this coming June.
However, that clause can only be activated based on appearances and other performance-related factors which have yet to be met.
Therefore, the more the Cobham academy graduate plays for Newcastle the closer Chelsea will get to selling him in the summer.
The London giants agreed to the deal last summer in order to raise funds after spending a whopping £1billion across the last three transfer windows.

The Blues also failed to qualify for Europe this season and could potentially miss out next term as well as they are currently 10th in the Premier League table.
Therefore, Chelsea have missed out on some essential funds from Europe.
Newcastle, on the other hand, couldn’t afford a deal up front and chose to spread the cost by making the transfer permanent in the summer.
This arrangement has also helped ease Financial Fair Play issues for both clubs. More

Chelsea need to sign these three stars in January, according to transfer supercomputer – including £100m teenage striker

A couple of key additions can vastly improve the BluesCredit: Getty
And there is a growing expectation the club will spend in January to get them out of trouble.
This would be coming on the back, however, of a £460million outlay in the summer as the club brought in the likes of Moises Caciedo, Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Axel Disasi and Lesley Ugochukwu.
This came on the back of a £600m outlay the season before as Chelsea’s new ownership group looked to stamp their identity on the club.
Despite this, the club find themselves well off the pace of where they want to be, sitting in 10th in the Premier League and 12 points off the top four.

So, given that Chelsea have invested such huge funds into their playing squad over the last 18 months, is further spending really the answer?
The answer might actually prove to be yes but mainly because their recruitment to this point has not been good enough.
But Total Football Analysis’ xGold tool has identified three players with similar profiles to top other top stars who could prove transformative for the Blues in the second half of the season.
The xGold tool was previously used to identify names for Manchester United, with Chelsea now being the subject of the conversation.

    1. Sacha Boey, RB, Galatasaray – £22m
Sacha Boey has been identified as the ideal January recruit for ChelseaCredit: Getty
Boey impressed in the Champions League this season
The first area we have looked at is right back following another injury to club captain Reece James, with Manchester City’s Kyle Walker being used as the blueprint to replace the position.
They have already brought in one French right-back in Malo Gusto to act as a backup option but xGold has identified a second Frenchman who has an 88 per cent likeness to Walker in Sacha Boey
Here we see an example of Boey’s dangerous movement when moving in possession
Boey dominated the right flank when playing at Old Trafford earlier this season
The 23-year-old has impressed in the Champions League with Galatasaray and has the kind of profile that could work well in the Premier League.
Boey is a fullback who can defend effectively and pass and move forward to support attacks and also possess the ability to tuck inside and support the centre-backs.
He is a superior defender to Malo Gusto with the ability to tuck inside and support his central defenders.
Boey is fast and strong but he also displays good game intelligence and anticipation.
Here Boey receives the ball and is intelligent enough to wait for his team-mates run before playing a pass
How Boey’s profile compares to Kyle Walker
And all of this comes at a cool estimated cost of £22m,
With James’ injury and right-back being an increasingly important position from a tactical point of view, the signing of a RB like Boey would give more depth and quality to the Chelsea squad going forward.
    2. Joao Neves, CM, Benfica – £105m
Joao Neves is the second name who has been identified by xGoldCredit: Getty
He has caught the eye at Benfica this season
Using Man City star Rodri as our second blueprint, xGold has returned an 85 per cent with Benfica midfielder Joao Neves.
Neves, 19, is already a full Portugal international and has a profile that would slot comfortably into the Premier League.
Neves is intelligent enough to find space in midfield to dictate play from
Neves has proven himself capable of being a heavy influence on games
Despite £222 pairing Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caciedo already in the Chelsea midfield, there is a sense that they are still missing a midfielder who can be a true controller in deeper areas.
Adding a midfielder like Neves, who likes to drop deeper and build the attack by receiving the ball from his defenders in high volume, would bring another dimension to the Chelsea midfield.
This allows him to support build up play by creating numerical superiority which can progress the ball through an opposition press.
His exemplary passing range is added to by the variety of passes he can play, making him an all-action midfielder that would give Chelsea a strong base to build from.
Neves’ passing range mark him out as an excellent conductor
    How Neves compares to Rodri
Neves, however, will not be cheap. And his estimated cost of £105m could be a big pill to swallow after already coughing up north of £100m on two other midfielders.
However, he has the potential to go on to become one of the top players in World football and he certainly stabilise this Chelsea midfield.
    3. Evan Ferguson, ST, Brighton – £100m
Evan Ferguson is the third star identified who can transform ChelseaCredit: Getty
Ferguson has been tipped as a star for the future
Considering the goal struggles among Chelsea’s forwards, the third star identified by xGold is Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, based off an 80 per cent match on the blueprint for Napoli ace Victor Osimhen.
Chelsea have been regular Brighton shoppers in recent seasons – Marc Cucurella and Moises Caicedo were both big money signings from the Amex – but they need to pay one more major visit to the Seagulls.
Ferguson’s profile mean he is capable of both holding up play and scoring goals himself
Ferguson has proven himself capable of dropping deep and leading the line
There are few better young forwards in world football than the 19-year-old Irish international, who is equally comfortable playing on the shoulder of the last defender or with his back to goal.
He is the definition of a forward that has ‘good feet for a big man’ and when receiving back to goal he has the ability to take the ball and combine with team-mates effectively in attack.
Ferguson is also, however, capable of receiving and spinning defenders who get too tight to him before driving forward and attacking towards the opposition penalty area.
At this point in time Chelsea are missing a forward who gives a real presence to the attack and who can hold the ball and bring others into the game.
Here Ferguson recieves the ball on the edge of the area before turning and curling a shot into the bottom corner
How Ferguson compares to Victor Osimhen
Given the speed Chelsea have in the wide areas and the technical players they have in the midfield, we believe adding a top-quality forward player will be the key in linking everything together.
Once again, Ferguson is not a player who will come cheap with some reports putting his cost as high as £100m, but Ferguson could feature at the top of their attack for the next decade.
    Read more on The Sun
    Conclusion
Using data and player profiles we can use tools like xGold to cut through the noise and sheer volume of players that are available to a team like Chelsea to help them to make smart decisions in terms of their recruitment.

Pochettino also named Conor Gallagher and Moises Caicedo as his midfield pivot, with Cole Palmer playing ahead of them in a very attacking front four.
Mykhailo Mudryk and Raheem Sterling were named on the wings in support of frontman Nicolas Jackson.
There was one enforced change in goal with Djorde Petrovic making his debut between the sticks in place of the injured Robert Sanchez.
But Blues fans took to social media to vent their frustration at the set up, with many arguing that Fernandez’s passing range would be effective in opening up Chris Wilder’s team.
