Three reasons why Ivan Toney would be better January transfer for Chelsea than Karim Benzema as Blues hunt new striker

IN the January transfer window almost every team in football wants to add the same thing – a striker to score goals.Given the spending at Chelsea in recent windows, it should come as no surprise that they are actively pursuing a new forward.

The decision to spend £32million on Nicolas Jackson has not worked out despite the 22-year-old Senegalese star scoring seven and assisting two in 19 Premier League matches.
While these numbers are respectable, it is not enough for a side with ambitions of finishing in the top four.
And two names surfacing as potential targets for the Blues are Brentford man Ivan Toney and Al-Ittihad’s Karim Benzema.
Both forwards come with an element of risk.

Toney is yet to play for Brentford this season having just served a long term ban for betting offences.
And Benzema is very much in the latter stages of his career having left Real Madrid in the summer to move to a far less competitive and intense league.
Yet despite those negatives, Toney and Benzema represent excellent options for Chelsea in the January window.
Here SunSport takes an in-depth into which of the two would be the better signing.
    Most read in Football
Presence and movement in the area
While there is no doubt Jackson is an excellent physical striker – standing at 6ft 2in with a powerful build and good pace – he still lacks a presence in the opposition area.
The best strikers in the world are capable of positioning themselves in spots that occupy two or three defenders.
Both Toney and Benzema are excellent penalty area strikers, albeit for slightly different reasons.
Toney uses power and speed to gain an advantage and create space, while Benzema’s movement is more subtle as he makes clever runs that attack space when defenders lose concentration.
Toney reads the space and is quick to attack and exploit the area
While both have top movement, both are also proven goalscorers at a high level.
Toney has had more of a long route to the top level having started his career at Newcastle before establishing himself as a first-team player at Peterborough.
He then moved to Brentford when they were in the Championship.
But last season saw Toney score 21 goals in all competitions, while Benzema bagged 31 in his final season at Real Madrid.
There is no doubt the skill set of the pair means they would score goals at Chelsea.
As the defenders focus on the near post, Benzema pulls off to curve his run and attack the back post
It is difficult to separate Toney and Benzema when considering their effectiveness in front of goal.
Both are proven strikers and Toney has an excellent profile for the Premier League.
The key thing, however, is that Chelsea find a way to create chances for the striker they end up looking to sign.
    Creativity in the final third
If you ask Cristiano Ronaldo who is the best striker he has ever played with he will always says Benzema.
The French striker adapted his own game to become more of a creative presence for Real Madrid when Ronaldo was at his peak.
Indeed, Benzema has long been one of the most underrated creative forwards at the top level.
The same, however, could be said of Toney as he has real vision and creativity when he receives the ball in the final third.
Chelsea have players who are capable of breaking the lines and getting forward to support the striker within their system.
If they add a striker who has the ability to receive the ball and break the defensive line with through balls then they will create more opportunities.
As Toney receives possession and turns, he has the vision and ability to find the runner
Part of the issue that Chelsea have faced this season is that they have ended up playing attacking midfielders as strikers.
And while Jackson struggles, there is an argument the London club need to add a more well-rounded striker to their squad.
Other than Erling Haaland, who is something of an outlier, all top strikers in the modern game need to be able to involve themselves in the build-up play.
If Chelsea are able to recruit a striker who can find runs and drop into space to drag defenders out of position then they will become much more difficult to play against.
Benzema sees a team-mate on the break and plays an accurate pass to release them
While both Toney and Benzema are strong in terms of receiving and creating threat through their passing in the final third, Toney has the edge here.
He is more mobile and aggressive in his movements to drop and receive the ball in tight areas.
    Playing with back to goal
One of the biggest strengths that Chelsea currently have in their squad is their ability to play progressive passes from the midfield.
Both Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo are progressive passers with the ability to break lines of pressure.
The problem that Chelsea have at the moment is they do not have a forward player that is effective when receiving those passes.
Toney and Benzema are effective at coming towards the ball and receiving it with their back to goal.
They are both strong when providing their teams with a platform from which they can build their attacks.
They will take possession and then link the play around the final third before moving forward.
Toney drops in to receive a pass, drags his marker out of position and creates space for others
Once again Toney is more mobile and aggressive in his movements than Benzema and he will look to drop into the midfield on a regular basis.
Neither are strikers that rely on pace to run in behind the defensive line, with both thriving more in possession-dominant systems.
Chelsea should always be expecting to dominate the ball against their opposition given the quality in their squad.
At the moment, for all of the money that Chelsea have invested in their midfield unit, they are not getting the best out of these players because they do not have the attacking players to receive and link the play back to goal.
Benzema drops into midfield and finds runners going beyond him
Once again, in terms of the ability to receive and play with their back to goal, Toney is more favourable over Benzema given he is fresher and more mobile.
    Conclusion
It is easy to make the argument that for a top club like Chelsea you could flip a coin between Toney and Benzema.
Both are top centre forwards that would improve Pochettino’s side.
But Toney is nine years younger with a more mobile and dynamic style of play.
And if Chelsea were to sign Benzema then they would need a player to replace him with again in the summer.

Toney would solve their problems for several seasons, so he seems like the most viable option.

Chelsea fans say Cesc Fabregas is their future manager as he reveals the three Premier League bosses he is studying

CHELSEA fans are hoping Cesc Fabregas will be their future manager after revealing who he is studying. The Spaniard – who spent five years in West London – has been learning his new coaching trade with Serie B side Como.

And he is already taking ideas from three of the Premier League’s best managers in Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta and Roberto De Zerbi.
Fabregas, 36, told Sky Sports: “I study other coaches.
“Not the coaches themselves but their philosophies. I am just at the beginning and do not pretend I know everything.
“At the moment, De Zerbi, Guardiola and Mikel Arteta are the three I follow in the Premier League and get most ideas from.”

The reveal was music to Blues fans’ ears as one said: “Cesc will lead us to greatness in a few years time.”
Another added: “Chelsea gaffer one day, I just know it.”
One hailed: “Our gaffer will be here in the future.”
Chelsea are currently labouring in 9th and struggling under Mauricio Pochettino.

Meanwhile, Guardiola is a five-time Premier League winner while his former protege Arteta has taken Arsenal to title contenders.
And De Zerbi has won praise for his creative style of play at Brighton – who are above Chelsea in the table – and has even been linked with Real Madrid.
Fabregas finished his playing career at Como and then took on a coaching role having invested in the club with Thierry Henry.
He was interim manager but stepped down in December so that he can finish off his Uefa coaching licence.
Chelsea legend Dennis Wise is the club’s president and together with Henry, the trio are looking at a long-term project.
Fabregas said: “It is something that brings more fire inside of the belly because this is a project where there are so many wins, not only on the pitch.
“There are so many things we want to do. We are trying to grow. The people taking care of the club are so ambitious.
“We just moved to a new training ground. We want to improve it to make the players as comfortable as possible.
“It is very exciting because the stadium is a big part of the project too. We are looking at the best stadiums in the world to see what we can do here.”

Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea star warns clubs they would ‘be thick’ to sign Ivan Toney in £100m transfer

CLUBS would have to “be thick” to fork out £100million on Ivan Toney this month, claims William Gallas.Brentford star Toney, 27, is eligible to play again after serving his eight-month betting ban.

The £100million-rated one-cap England international has been linked with a move away from the Bees, with Chelsea and Arsenal interested.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank recently claimed that he was “99 per cent sure” that Toney will stay for the rest of the season.
But the striker himself has refused to rule out a move, instead admitting that he’s eager to play for a “top club”.
Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender Gallas would be unimpressed if either of his former clubs matched Brentford’s £100m asking price.
    READ MORE ON IVAN TONEY
Speaking to Gambling Zone, the Frenchman said: “How much would Arsenal or Chelsea pay for him?
“Some clubs are thick. They don’t realise that there’s too much money in football so they’ll pay £100m for Toney.
“That means the player has to be an international player. He has hardly played for England.
“How can you explain to me that his price is £100m? If you buy a player for £100m, he has to be a young player.
    Most read in Football
“Spending £100m on a 27-year-old is too much. Either you spend £100m on an international player or a young player that a team can invest in for the long-term.”
Toney could return for Brentford in their Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest this Saturday.
Prior to his ban, Toney had scored 20 goals in 33 Prem outings last term.
Speaking to Sky Sports about his future this week, Toney said: “I don’t know. You can never predict when’s the right time to move elsewhere.
“But it’s obvious I want to play for a top club, everyone wants to play for a top club and fight for titles.
“Whether it’s this January that is the right time for a club to come in and pay the right money, who knows.”
Pundit Gary Neville has admitted that he hopes Toney stays at Brentford until at least the end of the season.
Speaking on his podcast, the 48-year-old said: “I hope Brentford keep him for the rest of the season and I hope Ivan Toney plays at the highest level as well at some point in the near future.

“But I think for Brentford to keep him for the rest of the season will be really good.
“I mean, there’s talk of Chelsea and Arsenal sniffing around him, but I hope he does stay at Brentford to give them a really strong finish to the season and I am delighted that he is back.”

Mauricio Pochettino issued brutal warning over Chelsea future and told to sign striker who will ‘get in the f***ing box’

JOHN OBI MIKEL says Chelsea need a striker who will “get in the f***ing box”.But the former Blues midfielder warned Mauricio Pochettino that he is running out of time to prove to the new Stamford Bridge owners he is the right man for the job.

Mikel was one of the stalwarts of the Chelsea glory era that started under Jose Mourinho.
The Nigerian won the Champions League, Europa League, two Prem crowns and six domestic cups in his 11-year spell in West London.
But Mikel, who played alongside the likes of Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Diego Costa at the Bridge, is looking in disbelief at Chelsea’s current lack of a potent attacking threat.
Mikel said: “We need a striker, simple as that. We need a good one.

“If you watch Haaland, most of his goals, where are they?
“In the f***ing box. The box.
“So that’s where we need a striker to score goals – to get in the f***ing box.”
Mikel believes there is a simple solution available, in the shape of his fellow Nigerian Victor Osimhen – whose relationship with Napoli has become increasingly strained this season.

He added: “For me, the one we need is Osimhen because he’s someone who would come in and score goals.
“He’s not the most technical guy but what he does is get you goals and that’s what we really need, we need goals.
“When I see him I can tell he is at the Chelsea level and he’ll get better with time.
“But the good thing about him is that he knows what his job is. His job is not to come in and mess around and that whole thing. It’s to score goals.”
Mikel, who played under six Blues managers in his spell at the club, gave a qualified vote of support for Pochettino, although it was a sugar-coated warning.
He said: “Everybody says we’ve spent a lot of money. Yes, we have.
“We’ve bought a lot of good players. They  need time to improve, time to get better, to get up as a team.
“Poch is a really good manager, someone who works really well with the young players and with the team.
Pochettino has been urged to sign a striker by MikelCredit: Getty
“But we’ve given them time now. It’s half a year together and now it’s time to win.
“At Chelsea, there’s no time. You have to win. That’s our motto.
“In my time, if you don’t win, Roman [Abramovich] gets you out of the door and gets someone else in.
“And that should be the new owners’ way of thinking. They are used to winning as well.
“If you don’t win, what’s the point of being at Chelsea? You have to win games.

“The excuse of trying to rebuild is done. So now we have to win games, we have to play better, we have to improve and try to compete.
“That’s the minimum now for this year. Then we can knock it on the head. But next year, we need to be there.” More
