Six times buyback clauses were triggered and whether they worked out as Chelsea insert £68m option in Abraham transfer

CHELSEA have inserted a buyback clause in Tammy Abraham’s contract ahead of his move to Rome. As part of his £34million transfer to Italy, it’s been agreed that Chelsea can bring him back for £68m in two years time.

But what other times have clauses been triggered and did the moves pay off?
    Ian Rush
Juventus bought Liverpool striker Ian Rush for £3.2m in 1986 which was a record deal involving a British club.
The prolific finisher netted 13 goals in his one season at Juve before being bought back by Liverpool for £2.8m.
His return to Anfield proved an inspired decision as Rush went on to become the club’s record scorer with 346 goals.

    Juninho
The Brazilian playmaker was sold by Middlesbrough to Atletico Madrid for £12m in 1996 after sparkling on Teeside.
Juninho came back on a loan spell before his third stint at Middlesbrough in 2002 and the legendary attacker helped the club win the League Cup in 2004.

    Alvaro Morata
The Spain striker started off his career with Real Madrid and was sold to Juventus in 2014 for £15.8m.
Real Madrid activated the buyback clause and brought him back to Spain for £23m two years later.
Morata scored 20 goals as he helped Real Madrid win the 2016-17 title and Champions League with a final triumph over former club Juve.
They then managed to flog him to Chelsea for £60m.

    Casemiro
The Brazilian midfielder was sent on loan from Real Madrid to Porto in the 2014-15 season and the transfer was made permanent.
But Real Madrid activated the buyback clause and he has proved a huge asset for them during their success under Zinedine Zidane.

Dani Carvajal was sold by Real Madrid to Bayer Leverkusen but the Spanish giants brought the defender back after less than a year.
The decision has paid off with the right-back being a regular since 2013 and helping the club to European and domestic silverware.

    Gerard Deulofeu
After an initial loan spell, Everton signed Gerard Deulofeu for £4.3m in 2015.
But two years later, Barcelona decided they wanted their La Lasia academy product back and forked out £10.6m to trigger his buyback clause.
They probably shouldn’t have bothered, with the Spaniard scoring two goals before being loaned to Watford in the January and then eventually sold to the Hornets.

Goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli arrived first on a free after leaving Fulham before Romelu Lukaku’s record £97.5m transfer from Inter Milan.
But Thomas Tuchel is still looking for reinforcements and wants to add a midfielder and centre-back to his ranks.
Sevilla defender Jules Kounde is their top target while Chelsea have also held a long-term interest in West Ham’s England midfielder Rice.
Now that may be cooling as they allegedly switch their attention to Borussia Dortmund’s Three Lions ace Bellingham.
Eurosport’s Dean Jones claims the Blues ‘have an eye’ on the 18-year-old after his impressive first year in the Bundesliga.
Jones said on The Football Terrace podcast: “I’ve talked about Jude Bellingham in the past and that one becomes interesting.

“And we’ll see what happens at Dortmund this season under Marco Rose.
“I know he’s excited about the project there and he’s definitely getting better as a player.
“But Chelsea do also have an eye on Jude Bellingham. If, for whatever reason, Declan Rice doesn’t work out.”
Chelsea would likely face huge competition from Manchester United for the ex-Birmingham City man.

They thought they had managed to secure his signature 12 months ago after they gave him a tour of their Carrington training HQ.
Bellingham even met the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, but he instead opted to move to Germany with Dortmund.
That switch has proven to be a successful one so far after he shone for them and helped Dortmund secure Champions League football and win the DFB-Pokal.

The 18-year-old burst on the scene with a series of impressive performances after breaking in to the Metz team.
The Senegalese talent won his first cap for his country in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo in March.
Sarr made 22 appearances in Ligue 1 last season for Metz, scoring three goals as his all-action displays alerted several European heavyweights.
United have been tracking the rising star and the Red Devils are set to face competition from Chelsea and champions Man City.
Sarr is capable of playing across the whole midfield and his versatility and athleticism has increased interest in him.

Sarr signed a five-year contract with Metz last season and the French club have bargaining power with the midfielder on a long-term deal.
The Premier League clubs are reportedly willing to loan him back to Metz for the rest of the season if they can secure a permanent deal.
The teenager could gain valuable experience of regular game time in France before adapting to English football.

Chelsea flops Drinkwater, Barkley and Bakayoko ‘told to organise transfer exits’ after being stripped of squad numbers

CHELSEA flops Tiemoue Bakayoko, Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley have all been told to find a new club after being stripped of their squad numbers. The trio cost the Blues £90million altogether but none have impressed since their respective arrivals at Stamford Bridge.

Now The Athletic claims the threesome have all been instructed by Thomas Tuchel to ‘organise moves elsewhere’ this summer.
And to further demonstrate they have no future in West London, none of the three players have even been given a squad number.
If the three midfielders can be offloaded then it would improve an already successful window for Chelsea.
They have registered a net spend of just £1.5million so far this summer.
The Blues have only made two signings up until now with goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli arriving first on a free after leaving Fulham and Romelu Lukaku’s record £97.5m transfer from Inter Milan.
However, a total of nine players have been sold and earned Roman Abramovich’s club £96m in the process to fund Lukaku’s return.

And Tammy Abraham is also on the verge of sealing his switch to Roma.
Barkley, 27, spent the last campaign on loan with Aston Villa and scored three goals in 24 games.
He has been at Chelsea since 2018 but has only made 52 appearances for them in the Premier League.
The Blues forked out £35m to sign Drinkwater, 31, in 2017 but he last played competitively for them over 1,100 days ago.
He was shipped out to Turkish side Kasimpasa on loan last term but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to get fixed up this season with a new club.

Meanwhile Lyon have joined AC Milan and Napoli in a bidding war for Chelsea outcast Bakayoko.
Napoli hold a strong interest for the France international, who is highly rated by manager Luciano Spalletti.
The 26-year-old underwent a loan stint at the Partenopei last season where he amassed 44 appearances.
Milan also continue to follow developments around the Frenchman’s status, who spent the 2018-2019 season out on loan with the Rossoneri.
The out-of-favour ace joined Chelsea in 2017 following a £40million deal with Monaco where he stood out playing with the like of Kylian Mbappe, Radamel Falcao, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy and more.
However, Bakayoko only managed three goals and three assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

CHELSEA have reportedly agreed to loan out Kenedy to Flamengo. The deal is set to have an option to make the move permanent for £8million.

The Champions League winners have a huge squad and are focused on trimming it with Kenedy likely to be heading out on loan.
Kenedy is out of favour at Stamford Bridge and the winger has been holding talks with Brazilian club Flamengo over a move.
According to Goal, Kenedy is close to agreeing a loan move with the option of a permanent deal.
The 25-year-old is in his final year of his Chelsea contract and has no realistic prospect of breaking into the side.
Kenedy spent last season on loan at Granada, making 44 appearances and scoring eight goals.
The Brazilian attacker has made 27 appearances for Chelsea since joining the club from Fluminense in 2015.

According to Sky Italia, Roma general manager Tiago Pinto held positive talks with Abraham in London on Thursday.
And now the Blues’ academy graduate looks on course to seal the switch, believing he will play a key role under new boss Jose Mourinho.
The report adds he will undergo a medical at Rome’s Villa Stuart Clinic this afternoon.
And assuming there are no issues, Abraham shall put pen to paper on a five-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico worth £4m per year after tax – taking home £80,000 per week.
It is understood Chelsea have inserted a £68m buy-back clause into the deal.
However, that cannot be triggered by the Stamford Bridge club until the summer of 2023 at the earliest.

BETTING SPECIAL – GET MAN CITY AT 7/1 OR TOTTENHAM AT 33/1
Roma beat off the likes of Arsenal and Italian side Atalanta to land Abraham, with Chelsea preferring to sell him abroad rather than to a rival Premier League club.
The imminent transfer ends Abraham’s 17-year affiliation with the club.
He joined the academy at Under-8s level and became a first-team regular after loans with Bristol City, Swansea and Aston Villa.
In 82 first-team appearances for the Blues, he managed 30 goals – including 12 last season to make him the joint-top scorer.
However, after Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard in the dugout, his opportunities dried up.
And the club-record £97.5m arrival of Romelu Lukaku ensured he slipped down the pecking order again.
Tuchel admitted this week he was partly to blame for Abraham’s lack of progression in 2021.
The German said: “Tammy is right now in the squad. He did some good preparation matches.
“He was clearly not happy with the last half a year and maybe he has reason also not to be happy and maybe it was also my fault not to push him, not to trust him on the same level I maybe trusted other players.
“I can absolutely understand that he wants more minutes.
“So the decision will be ‘How do we plan, what are Tammy’s plans, does he fight his way back into the team from the position where he ended last season or does he want to change club to have the chance of being a regular starter?'”

Ashley Cole reveals ‘quiet’ Romelu Lukaku shadowed Didier Drogba in Chelsea training before becoming ‘ruthless’ striker

ROMELU LUKAKU was ‘quiet’ when he arrived at Chelsea to play with his idol Didier Drogba, but returns a decade later as a ‘ruthless’ finisher. That is insight from legendary left-back Ashley Cole, who remembers boyhood Blues fan Lukaku signing as a 17-year-old from Anderlecht in 2011.

The Belgian striker looked up to Drogba on and off the pitch and would receive regular mentoring from the Stamford Bridge icon. Speaking at the launch of Three’s new store in Kings Road, Cole, 40, told SunSport: “He was quiet.
“He came as a 17-year-old boy, with a huge amount of talent, raw talent at that, but someone always willing to listen, to the likes of Didier Drogba.
“He was his idol, he looked up to Didier so I think it was very important for him to have the opportunity day to day to see how Didier works.
“Didier worked with him a lot in terms of the individual movements, different shooting practices and gave him that little bit of mentality that was needed.”
Lukaku, now 28, spent four years at Chelsea but made only 15 appearances without scoring a goal and had loans with West Brom and Everton.

It left Blues fans still in the dark about the powerhouse’s ability, but behind the scenes Cole recognised the talent which Lukaku has later gone on to prove away from West London.
He said: “He was a boy, 17 years of age. Very difficult to nail down a position or place in Chelsea’s first team.
“He had a lot of work to do but you could always see he was willing to do it and wanted to do it.
“So already you see that mentality and you always knew if he got that opportunity he would take it, as I said, he was willing to graft on the training pitch.
“And now he’s improved in certain aspects of his game and he’s developed into a ruthless striker, one of the top strikers in the world now.”
“Didier worked with him a lot in terms of the individual movements, different shooting practices and gave him that little bit of mentality that was needed.” Ashley Cole on Romelu Lukaku and Didier Drogba
In the years since leaving Chelsea permanently in 2014, Lukaku has shined at Everton, got himself a big money move to Manchester United before then joining Inter Milan in 2019.
And Lukaku appeared happy in Milan this summer, having last season helped them to a first Serie A title in 11 years.
But the opportunity to re-write history with the club he grew up supporting proved too hard to turn down for the Belgium international, who moved back to Chelsea for £97.5million.
    ‘UNFINISHED BUSINESS’
Cole said: “It’s always difficult, you talk about this was his boyhood club, I bet he would feel – even though he was a kid – that it didn’t go well. That’s why he’s come back with the unfinished business.
“He would’ve been disappointed to leave the club at the start, but to come back with a name, a big personality, and knowing what he’s done in major tournaments, he’s contributed and scored goals, he’s worked and developed and he’s been playing with top, top players.
“He comes back now and maybe with unfinished business, but no one can take away what he’s done already and hopefully he can come back and help Chelsea continue to win trophies.”
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, who won the Champions League only six months after replacing Cole’s former team-mate Frank Lampard, has been crying out for a lethal No9.
And Cole believes Lukaku has all the same qualities as Chelsea’s most prolific forward, Drogba, and offers the versatility that comes with it.
He explained: “When I was of course at Chelsea, you looked at the way Didier Drogba played, every movement in front of goal, he was deadly.
“So we could play all types of football with him, we could go long he could hold it up, we could get crosses in.

“Talk about getting into wide areas and putting balls into the box, someone willing to attack the ball, in terms of that, I think Lukaku has every one of those traits.
“With a very good manager, who has a very good style of play, and gets the team in good areas, hopefully he can free Lukaku to do what he’s been doing in the last ten years, and that’s scoring goals.
“Chelsea’s all round game now, and ability to adapt and play a little bit longer, I think with Lukaku in the team I think that’s definitely helps.”
