Three key battles that will decide Chelsea v Tottenham on Sunday and why Jorginho could be key in vital London derby

CHELSEA host Spurs on Sunday for a London derby that is already hugely important for both teams. They both won their opening games, although their performances were very, very different.
Chelsea have the upper hand in Premier League clashes with Spurs

Spurs were extremely comfortable in beating Southampton 4-1 while Chelsea limped through their match with Everton as they ended with a 1-0 win courtesy of a Jorginho penalty.
Chelsea have endured a difficult pre-season as, under new ownership, they have looked to rebuild their squad with a series of high-profile additions for £176m- and there will be more on the way.
Spurs, on the other hand, have had a relatively steady summer in which they have added players that bring competition and depth to the squad while also retaining their most important players as they look to push on.
Sunday’s game could hinge on three key tactical battles.

Where does Harry Kane actually play?
Harry Kane is one of the best out-and-out goalscorers in the game.
Playing as the ‘9’ for both club and country he has led the line for years – although in recent seasons his game has started to evolve as he has dropped deeper in order to pick up possession.

Last season Kane dropped into a position more regularly associated with a ‘10’, and created many goals for the South Korean international Son Heung-Min.
Both Chelsea and Spurs are likely to match up in a 3-4-3 system.
As such one of the key factors will be how Chelsea find a way to stop Kane from finding space as he drops back into deeper areas.
As Spurs attack down the near side Kane drops back in order to give an option inside. As Kane moves back Spurs push players ahead of him to attack space in the defensive line

Against Everton, we saw Thiago Silva act as the deepest defender in a back three for Chelsea as Kalidou Koulibally and Cesar Azpilicueta were more aggressive in their positioning.
How though will Thomas Tuchel find a way to negate the space between the defence and midfield that Kane can drop into and occupy?
There is no easy answer to this question.
Koulibally is a very strong defensive player whose mobility and strength make him a daunting opponent for any defender.
If he is tasked with stepping towards the midfield though to cover the movement of Kane then the left side of the Chelsea defence will be exposed.
Chelsea now have two international left-backs in Ben Chilwell of England and Marc Cucurella of Spain – but asking either of those to provide the defensive cover will unbalance the entire defensive structure.
Kane drops deep as he drives into space in possession of the ball. He has three teammates in advanced areas that are making runs to attack the opposition back line
CHELSEA 35/1 or SPURS 50/1 – CLAIM HERE
We are also unlikely to see one of the double pivots in the midfield for Chelsea, likely to be Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, dropping back to close off the space that Kane can play in as this would leave them undermanned in the midfield areas allowing Spurs to dominate the ball in that area.
    So, what is the answer?
Chelsea may look to play with a higher defensive line in order to close down the available space but in doing so they expose the lack of pace of Thiago Silva in the centre of the defence.
Is Raheem Sterling going to play as a central striker?
When Chelsea signed the English international forward Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, for a fee of £50m, there was some debate as to where he would play for Tuchel’s side.

When he initially made his breakthrough at first-team level for Liverpool, it was as a winger  – but at Manchester City he spent time playing as more of a central striker in areas where his mobility and ability to play in tight spaces were extremely effective.
With Romelu Lukaku having left Chelsea and returned to Inter Milan, there was a sense that the young German international Kai Havertz would take the central striking role while Sterling would play from the left.
Yet in the first match of the season, it was Havertz who played from the left while Sterling played centrally.

These are the kind of pockets of space that Sterling can find with his movement in tight spaces. By creating separation from the defenders in this way Sterling can receive and then drive into gaps in possession.
Sterling is extremely mobile but there were signs in the match at Everton that the partnership and the understanding between him and Havertz still needs some work.
In a month or two we may see the two of them switching and interchanging positions on the pitch on a regular basis and with more fluidity.
At the moment though the movement in that sense is not quite there.
This is a position in which Sterling often found himself for Manchester CIty. As he drives forward in transition Havertz is looking to make a run from outside to inside to find space. Mason Mount, on the other side, is less aggressive though and so Sterling has fewer options.
CHELSEA 35/1 or SPURS 50/1 – CLAIM HERE
If we see Sterling playing as the central striker in this match then Spurs will be relatively comfortable allowing him to drop off the front line into space as there are less aggressive runs being made by the other forwards than we saw from the Spurs front line last week.
With Mason Mount playing against Everton as a wide attacker from the right-hand side Chelsea had another attacking player who was not playing in his best role or position.
Mount was easier to defend for the Everton defence as he made less aggressive runs to break the lines.
    The battle for the midfield
The midfield will be a key battleground in this match and we expect both sides to line up in matching 3-4-3 systems with a double pivot in the midfield.
In the opening games, Spurs played with Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in this area while Chelsea had Jorginho and N’Golo Kante.
Both pairs are perhaps not the most attack-minded – they are, however, extremely functional in their approach – and one of the biggest challenges for both sides in this game will be finding creativity from these areas.
Jorginho has the capacity to make movements out of the midfield to receive the ball in good areas. Here he makes a clever run to move beyond the opposition midfield to take possession of the ball)

New to Sky Bet? Get £30 in free bets – CLAIM HERE*
Chelsea perhaps have the edge in terms of technical ability with the Italian international Jorginho, in particular, displaying clever passing ability with the capacity to break lines when he does actually look to pass it forwards.
The issue that Chelsea will have though is that Bentancur and Hojbjerg are extremely capable of nullifying the opposition midfield and preventing them from being able to play.
Under Antonio Conte, the Spurs midfield has emerged as an extremely industrious part of the team with the ability to drop and cover space behind and to the sides as they essentially cover for teammates who move into advanced positions.
Spurs midfield works extremely hard to cover space. Here, we see Hojbjerg moving outside in order to cover and intercept a pass down the line from Southampton
If neither side is able to truly take control of the midfield areas in this match then the edge will go to a Spurs side who are set up to allow Kane to drop off into the midfield while also ensuring that they have runners making forward runs beyond the ball.
Who will come out on top?
Neither side will want to give up anything so early in the season so not losing will be the order of the day.
If Chelsea can effectively stop Kane linking everything together and prevent Tottenham’s exciting front three playing then they will be one step nearer taking the points.

But, unless Tuchel can come up with a fluid way of breaking down Spurs’ now-well-drilled backline you wonder how the Blues will score themselves – after all, they hardly tore Everton apart.
All roads point to a damage-limiting draw that will no doubt raise more questions for Tuchel than for Conte.

Chelsea line up shock transfer swoop for Celtic right-back Josip Juranovic – with Man Utd also tracking £2.5m Croatian

CHELSEA are in line to seal a shock transfer swoop for Josip Juranovic. The Celtic star, 26, is being tracked by a number of clubs including Atletico Madrid and Manchester United with Chelsea now the latest to register their interest.

Juranovic would come into Thomas Tuchel’s squad to bolster the right-hand side of their defence.
Chelsea have seen a number of defenders depart the club this summer, most notably Antonio Ruidger and Andreas Christensen, while Levi Colwill recently secured a loan move to Brighton.
The Blues are also set to see the back of Marcos Alonso, with the Spaniard set to join Barcelona, although they managed to ward off the Spanish side’s interest in Cesar Azpilicueta.
The Croatian would cost Chelsea at least £15million according to 90min.

Juranovic would likely represent a far cheaper deal than the likes of Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries or Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters.
The aforementioned interest of Atletico and Man Utd could make a deal somewhat tricky to complete, but Chelsea have reportedly been putting in the ground work behind the scenes for some weeks.
Juranovic signed for Celtic in a £2.5m deal from Legia Warsaw last season, and enjoyed great success as Celtic reclaimed the Scottish Premiership ahead of rivals Rangers.
Chelsea have already spent nearly £170m on new players this summer, and could see their expenditure far exceed £200m if they agree a deal to sign £84m-rated Leicester defender Wesley Fofana.

The Blues are also said to be tracking Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest and are close to agreeing a fee for Frenkie de Jong.

‘Very close relationship’ – Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel drops huge Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang transfer hint

Blues boss Tuchel, who coached Aubameyang at Dortmund during the two most prolific seasons of the forward’s career, was coy on whether he will land the player.
But he said: “I enjoyed working with him. It was a pleasure. This has nothing to do with the situation now, but some players stay your players because you were very, very close. We have a very close relationship.”
Aubameyang developed a reputation for poor discipline at Arsenal, who were happy to let him leave for Barca in January.
Tuchel said: “I never experienced any of this. This has nothing to do with the situation at Arsenal which I will also not comment on out of respect. At Dortmund, there was never an issue.”

Asked whether he would like to manage the Gabon forward again, Tuchel said: “It’s a nice try but we don’t talk about the future of players. The future is in the next training session.”
And quizzed about signing Fofana, Tuchel, whose team face Spurs on Sunday, said: “No matter how good your question will be, I will not comment.
“We could use one more central defender if you look at the numbers. The profile of the guys in the back three is a little different, I admit. We could use one more.
“I think we could use and strengthen our squad in depth. It’s one thing what you wish for and the other thing what’s possible.

“We will not panic and will not try to sign players of which we are not 100 per cent convinced.
“All the signings so far have been fantastic signings who help us.

Man Utd failed in last-ditch move for Timo Werner with Ten Hag now lining up shock transfer for ex-Chelsea pal Ziyech

MANCHESTER UNITED reportedly failed in a last-ditch attempt to hijack Timo Werner’s Chelsea exit. Werner, 26, returned to former club RB Leipzig for £25million – just two years after joining Chelsea for £45m.

The German’s time at Chelsea was largely hit and miss, with his poor finishing causing lots of frustration among The Blues faithful.
However, United were convinced enough to make an 11th hour bid to try and hijack his move back to Germany, according to Manchester Evening News.
United have had a torrid time in the transfer window this week, with deals for Marko Arnautovic and Adrien Rabiot being met with huge backlash from fans.
Additionally, a move for former RB Salzburg forward Benjamin Sesko also fell flat due to him signing for Leipzig just a few weeks after meeting with United football director John Murtough.

United are now lining up a move to sign wantaway Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech according to MEN’s report, with the Moroccan a former player under Erik ten Hag while at Ajax.
United’s transfer recruitment this window has largely come down to players who Ten Hag has either previously worked with or who he wanted from his time at Ajax.

Lisandro Martinez fits the former category and Tyrell Malacia fits the latter, while former Tottenham and Brentford star Christian Eriksen is an exception to this rule – although the Dane did previously play for Ajax.
Ziyech, 29, is under contract at Chelsea until 2025, but the arrival of Raheem Sterling at Stamford Bridge has made him surplus to requirements under Thomas Tuchel.

United are also said to be interested in Cody Gakpo from PSV.

The Spain international made his debut for his new club last week in the Premier League opener against Everton at Goodison Park and played for 15 minutes.
But this weekend the 24-year-old could start for Thomas Tuchel’s side in Ben Chilwell’s place.
Chilwell started against the Toffees but is still working his way back to full fitness after a long-term knee injury.
The Spaniard, who is the world’s most expensive left-back, could start as a left wing-back in Tuchel’s signature 3-4-3 formation.

Cucurella may be joined by Edouard Mendy in goal against London rivals Tottenham.

Arsenal won’t get a penny if Aubameyang makes Chelsea transfer despite paying his £7m Barcelona wages last season

ARSENAL failed to secure a sell-on clause when they allowed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to leave for nothing to join Barcelona. Now the Spanish giants could cash in just six months later as Chelsea want the £15million-rated frontman as well as Barca team-mate Frenkie de Jong.
Barcelona could make a tidy profit if they sell Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Chelsea as they got him for free and only started paying his wages this seasonCredit: Reuters
Barcelona did not even pay Aubameyang’s wages for the 23 games he played for them last season as Arsenal picked up the tab.
Emirates chiefs  were so desperate to offload Auba after his fallout with boss Mikel Arteta that they agreed to pay his £7m wages for the rest of the season.
That call came back to bite them when the Gabon international scored 13 goals to fire Barca to second in LaLiga.
Arsenal terminated Aubameyang’s £350,000-a-week contract, so they were unable to insist on a cut of any future transfer.

But the £42.5m signing of Robert Lewandowski means Auba is now surplus to requirements.
And Nou Camp bigwigs know Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is keen to work with his former Borussia Dortmund player again.
Aubameyang agreed a pay cut to £80k a week when joining in January.
But Barca only started paying that this season due to the Gunners’ £7m Auba pay-off.

Leeds winger Raphinha cost £47m and the Spanish giants paid Sevilla £55m to beat Chelsea to centre-back Jules Kounde.
Stamford Bridge defender Andreas Christensen and AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie came in for free.
Ousmane Dembele and Sergi Roberto also cannot be registered until Barcelona slash their wage bill as they’ve both signed new contracts.
Chelsea have splashed out even more than Barca under new owner Todd Boehly – £178m so far this summer.
The Blues’ American backers have invested in £50m frontman Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli for £34m, and £62m Brighton left-back  Marc Cucurella.

‘It’s horrific’ – Gary Neville claims it would be ’embarrassing’ if Man Utd miss out on Frenkie de Jong transfer now

Chelsea are now thought to be in pole position to sign De Jong.
That’s after Erik ten Hag made De Jong his No1 transfer target at the start of the summer, with United even agreeing a fee with Barcelona for the Dutchman.
A move failed to materialise – and Neville is bracing himself for the worst if De Jong heads to Stamford Bridge over Old Trafford.
The United legend told Football Daily: “If they (United) don’t get him, it’s embarrassing but if he goes to Chelsea, it’s horrific.
    Read More Man Utd News
“If he doesn’t want to come the deal would have been switched off a few weeks ago.
“Because of the relationship the player has with the manager, there must be some communication between them that’s saying, ‘wait for me I’m coming’.”

De Jong is claimed to be holding showdown talks with his agent today in attempt to try and finally resolve his future.
While a move to Old Trafford could still be on the cards, De Jong joining a Premier League rival is something Neville cannot “even contemplate thinking about”.

He continued: “There are three outcomes. One, he comes and Man United look smart and patient.
“The second is that he stays at Barca and there’s a bit of embarrassment because they’ve put all their eggs in one basket, and they haven’t got anyone else in.
“They’ve got a void in the squad, they’re starting the season with Fred and McTominay, and it makes them look like they can’t get a deal over the line.
“The third one does not even contemplate thinking about – he goes to a rival club in the Premier League against the manager who he’d worked under for the previous few years.”
The 25-year-old has made it clear he would like to stay at Barcelona.
But the club’s dire financial position, which means they cannot register any of their new signings, means they are eager for De Jong to leave. More

Hakim Ziyech ‘willing to take pay cut to seal AC Milan transfer’ as Italians prepare loan-to-buy bid for Chelsea winger

AC Milan have been linked throughout the summer but a £30million investment on midfielder Charles De Ketelaere saw their transfer funds take a hit.
Although Ziyech’s willingness to cut his wages means the Serie A champions will now make the Blues an offer, according to Calciomercato.
The Moroccan winger earns a reported £100,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge – but is happy to take home less in order to secure a move.
And now the San Siro side want to loan Ziyech for the season, with the option to sign him permanently.

Chelsea though are believed to want AC Milan to have the obligation to buy Ziyech if he is loaned out, which would see him ultimately moved on for good.
The Rossoneri though are not prepared to include an obligation to buy in the deal.

That stumbling block means Ziyech’s future is unlikely to be resolved until the closing days of the window.
AC Milan are claimed to be willing to wait until then, hoping Chelsea’s desperation to shift him will lead to them accepting the offer from the Italians.

The Blues remain desperate for him to go, with Ziyech listed alongside Timo Werner, Malang Sarr and Marcos Alonso earlier this week as players free to leave the club.
Werner and Sarr have already gone, with Alonso reportedly set to complete a £6.5million move to Barcelona this week.
So the Blues could find themselves caving to Milan’s demands if Ziyech is still on the books come the final days of the window.
Ziyech started just 14 Premier League games last season, and Raheem Sterling’s arrival this summer will only restrict his game time further.
