Chelsea reach agreement over Wesley Fofana transfer after late breakthrough with Leicester over £70m-plus deal

CHELSEA have finally reached an agreement to sign Leicester star Wesley Fofana. The Blues will pay an initial £70million fee plus hefty add-ons for the Frenchman following weeks of talks.

And the centre-back is now set to pen a six-year deal until 2028 at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea were ready to walk away after a third offer, totalling £70m, was rejected by Leicester on Tuesday.
But after going back in with a fourth offer with improved terms, City have buckled.
Fofana made it clear to Brendan Rodgers he was desperate to join Thomas Tuchel’s side when the first bid arrived this month.

The France U21 star was left out of last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Southampton after claiming he wasn’t in the right state of mind to play.
And Rodgers earlier confirmed Fofana would play no part in Leicester’s match against Chelsea tomorrow.
Leicester had maintained Fofana would stay put after rejecting several offers from Chelsea.
They were holding out for a world-record fee in excess of £80m.

But a breakthrough in talks was reached this week, with the Blues submitting an acceptable bid on Friday.
The Foxes are set to make a tasty profit on £75m Fofana, having signed him for £36.5m from Saint Etienne in 2020.
He impressed in 38 outings during his debut season at the King Power Stadium.
But a leg break limited him to just 12 outings last term.
Fofana will now battle for a spot in Chelsea’s back five, with a place on the right of Thiago Silva up for grabs.
However, his arrival also raises the possibility of Tuchel trying out a back four.
    NEW STAR, NEW STYLE?
The German previously said he needed another powerful centre-back to make the switch, with natural full-backs Cesar Azpilicueta and Marc Cucurella not suitable.
But a fresh injury blow for N’Golo Kante means Tuchel is likely to stick with his tried-and-trusted formation for now.
He explained: “I told you at the end of last season he (Kante) is our key player normally. He gives something to our team that no other player in the world can give to any other team. That makes him a key player.
“If your key player is out, it’s a situation you don’t like but have to deal with. It has huge influence.
“It’s difficult to replace him, he’s very unique. We were full of hope after pre-season because we built his pre-season very individual.
“If we build another system, I don’t know. We have trust in our players. It will maybe be the same system.

“We played many games, unfortunately, without him in the same structure. It will be slightly different because every player is a bit different.
“That is the challenge to adapt to this, use different players differently. To change completely because N’Golo is not there, I don’t think so.” More

Frank Lampard tells Chelsea that Anthony Gordon is worth over £100MILLION as Everton starlet pushes for Blues transfer

Chelsea have been pushing to sign him, but Everton have already knocked back four offers.
And now, Lampard has insisted that the winger is in the same bracket as players worth over £100m.
On Friday, he told Sky Sports: “He is our player and remains so, he is in the squad for tomorrow.
“He is a huge player for us, I said it last week, not only is he of great value to the club financially, but more importantly of great value to the squad and to me.

“They haven’t bid £60m so let’s not talk about a number that’s not there.
“I can’t put a number on his value to the club. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with fantastic young players at Derby and Chelsea, seen them develop and become England internationals and Champions League winners, worth triple figures (£100m+) in terms of their personal values.

“Anthony is in that bracket, he’s been a pleasure to work with and he’s ours. He’s an Everton boy, he plays for us and the crowd relate to him.
“It’s understandable that people would be interested in him because of the level of player that he is. The facts remain the same.”

Everton chiefs are eager to keep Gordon at the club for at least one more year.
However, they may be forced into a sale as the winger has made it clear that he wants to leave.
Gordon wants to play in the Champions League as he believes it will help him break into Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of this year’s Qatar World Cup.
He dropped a huge transfer hint earlier this week suggesting that a move could be on the cards.
Fans were quick to notice that he had removed all Everton links from his Instagram bio.
The Toffees will travel to the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday to take on Brentford.
Lampard will be hoping his side can claim their first win of the Premier League season. More

Chelsea’s £25million Aubameyang transfer stalls as Blues refuse to give Barcelona striker, 33, two-year contract

THOMAS TUCHEL’S hopes of a reunion with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are stalling over personal terms. The Barcelona striker wants a deal for at least two years while Chelsea are only prepared to offer a one-season contract.
Chelsea are unwilling to give Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang more than a one-year dealCredit: AFP
Aubameyang is 33 and Chelsea are mindful of his age and committing to a long-term agreement – broadly in line with their policy on older players.
It is still hoped a compromise will be reached and that the former Arsenal captain will return to the Premier League before next Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Tuchel wants Aubameyang to join him at Stamford Bridge to provide the outlet needed in front of goal as an out-and-out centre forward with bags of experience.
Chelsea are relying on the use of so-called “false nines” – using attacking midfielder Kai Havertz or Raheem Sterling in the striker’s usual position.

Tuchel can call on rookie Armando Broja but the 20-year-old Albanian has only one full term under his belt in the Premier League on loan at Southampton last season where he impressed, scoring nine goals.
Aubameyang has a deal until 2025 at Barcelona although there is a chance to re-negotiate at the end of this season.
He played for Tuchel previously at Borussia Dortmund and the pair remain close.
Chelsea are reluctant to hand out long-term contracts to players over 30 and have encountered problems in the past with this.

Defender David Luiz and winger Willian left as a result. Current captain Cesar Azpilicueta was tempted to leave in the summer when Barcelona offered him a longer contract than was on offer at Stamford Bridge, although he stayed in the end.
Chelsea and Barcelona are largely in agreement over Aubameyang with a fee of around £25m to be paid – but it now needs the player and the club to sort out terms. More

Chelsea boss Tuchel will be ‘very annoyed’ that club have failed to get Fofana transfer done, says club legend Petit

CHELSEA cult hero Emmanuel Petit has declared that Thomas Tuchel will be “very annoyed” by the Wesley Fofana transfer saga. The Blues have had three bids rejected by Leicester for the French centre-back, with their latest proposal at £70million knocked back by the Foxes.

SunSport understands that the West London outfit have pulled the plug on their move for the 21-year-old as Leicester hold out for a whopping £85m.
But Fofana still dreams of a switch to Stamford Bridge, with the defender to be left out of Saturday’s clash between the two clubs.
Chelsea go into the meeting without a win in their last two matches, while N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic are out through injury, with Kalidou Koulibaly suspended.
And Chelsea’s frustrations in the market are claimed to be annoying boss Tuchel who remains desperate to bolster his backline and attack.

Former Blues midfielder Emmanuel Petit told Fair Betting Sites: “I think he’s very annoyed by the fact they are not active on the transfer market.
“He wants players, especially at the back.  He could’ve anticipated that, to be honest with you.
“When you let three important players at the back leave for free, you should have anticipated this.
“This year has been very difficult, mentally, for the club, the fans, the players, the manager.

“You could see that. They started the Premier League tired.
“I can see that Tuchel is very tired, is very nervous. He was complaining about the pre-season tour, all the trips they had to do, it was exhausting for them.
“The transfer market is ending in a couple of days, he doesn’t see any players coming in, so I can understand his frustration.
“On top of it, he’s losing big important players, Kante for example, Kovacic is not fit, he lost [Kalidou] Koulibaly on the sending off.”
A victory for winless Leicester in the capital would see them leapfrog Chelsea in the table.

On Thursday Aubameyang shared an update showing he is in Paris, despite Barca preparing for a match against Valladolid on Sunday.
Aubameyang filmed himself sitting in a vehicle which did not appear to be one of his luxury sports cars.
He then zoomed in behind him on the Arc de Triomphe, a famous Paris landmark, and captioned the Instagram video: “Sometimes people forget that there is life as well not only football!”
The Gabon international has been subject to transfer interest from Chelsea over the last week.

The Blues have made several bids for Aubameyang with the latest in the region of £17million – still some way short of Barca’s £25m asking price.
But it is believed the Catalan giants could accept the offer as the money would allow them to register summer signing Jules Kounde.
Aubameyang is thought to be open to the switch, which would see him return to London after leaving Arsenal in February.
However, he is not pushing to make a move happen as he is happy playing at the Nou Camp, despite the risk of less game time following the signing of Robert Lewandowski.

Tuchel badly needs reinforcements following the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner.
But ex-Arsenal and Chelsea star Petit – a French World Cup winner – said: “Auba looks more a panic buy than something the club have been thinking about for months.

Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs offload record transfer signings.. no wonder Europe talks of ‘stupid English money’

AFTER Arsenal agreed to farm out Nicolas Pepe on loan to Nice, an extraordinary pattern of transfer activity was completed this summer. It meant that Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and the Gunners have all allowed their club-record signings — who cost a combined £313.5million — to depart without a single penny being recouped in transfer fees.

Arsenal have done the same with flop winger Nicolas PepeCredit: GETTY
There is little surprise that those four members of England’s ‘Big Six’ have been left trailing in the wake of Manchester City and Liverpool in recent seasons, with such haphazard and shambolic recruitment.
And no wonder that clubs on the continent talk of ‘stupid English money’, knowing they can fleece filthy-rich Premier League sides in the market.
First, United’s £89m man Paul Pogba was allowed to leave Old Trafford for Juventus on a free — for a second time — after a largely miserable six-year spell for the French World Cup winner.
Then Chelsea sent £97.5m Romelu Lukaku back to Inter Milan, after a single season at Stamford Bridge, for a modest loan fee of £7m — so desperate was Thomas Tuchel to get the big Belgian striker out of the building.
    READ MORE IN SPORT
Last week, Spurs loaned their most expensive recruit, Tanguy Ndombele — a £55m buy from Lyon in 2019 — to Napoli. There is an option, but no obligation, for the Italian club to buy the French midfielder next summer.
And Pepe’s loan move to Nice completes the set.
The Ivory Coast winger was a £72m purchase from Lille in 2019, even though Unai Emery insisted he wanted to buy Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace instead.
Nice are paying only half of his £140,000-per-week wages and, again, there is no compulsion for a permanent move.

He made just five Premier League starts last term and it was clear that Mikel Arteta wanted rid of a player who was a relic of a previous regime.
Arteta, unlike predecessor Emery, is in tune with the club’s hierarchy, including recruitment chief Edu, and his side boasts the top flight’s only 100 per cent record.
Spurs can also argue that they are doing things differently — and more effectively — under Antonio Conte and his fellow Italian, football director Fabio Paratici.
The deals for Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Ivan Perisic were decisive and early, with boss Conte unusually content with life and Spurs currently unbeaten.
Ndombele is a gifted player but, under four Spurs managers — Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte — he has shown his talent only fleetingly.
His final Spurs appearance, before he was loaned to Lyon last January, saw the Frenchman substituted — and loudly booed — with his side 1-0 down at home to Morecambe in the FA Cup.
Across town at Chelsea, the expensive, scattergun approach continues under new owner Todd Boehly.
This summer’s £62m deal for Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella, in particular, suggests the Blues are still willing to gamble big.
United’s long-term status as transfer market mugs is well-documented — 31 different players were signed for £10m or more during Ed Woodward’s eight-year reign and not a single one has been a cast-iron hit.
    Read More on The Sun
The arrival of defensive midfielder Casemiro from Real Madrid is exactly what United need. Yet the Brazilian is 30, so a fee of up to £70m is staggering.
No wonder they continue to talk of that ‘stupid English money’.

Ziyech, 29, is not in Thomas Tuchel’s plans for this season.
And he is desperate to secure a transfer exit before next week’s deadline.
Italian champions AC Milan were leading the race earlier this summer.

But former club Ajax emerged as frontrunners after star winger Antony was targeted by Manchester United.
Dutch chiefs reportedly made Ziyech their top option should the Brazilian depart.
And talks were opened with Chelsea this week over a stunning return for the Moroccan.
However, the Mail claims negotiations have ground to a halt over Ziyech’s price-tag.

It’s believed Ajax only want to pay around £15million to £20m.
But Chelsea want to recoup the £33m they paid to sign Ziyech from Amsterdam in 2020,
Ajax have no intention of handing the full amount back over.
And they are now thought to be looking elsewhere for Antony’s replacement.
It means Ziyech is now at risk of stagnating at Stamford Bridge with other exiles who are yet to receive offers.
