Thomas Tuchel SACKED by Chelsea as Todd Boehly swings axe after shock Dinamo Zagreb defeat and poor start to season

THOMAS TUCHEL has been SACKED by Chelsea following their shock Champions League defeat away at Dinamo Zagreb.SunSport has exclusively revealed Brighton boss Graham Potter is among the early frontrunners for the vacant position with talks scheduled to take place today.

Meanwhile Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane are also on Chelsea’s shortlist, as well as Benfica boss Roger Schmidt.
Blues owner Todd Boehly has shown he is just as ruthless as predecessor Roman Abramovich after wielding the axe on the German gaffer.
A poor Premier League start has seen Chelsea lose two out of their opening six matches.
They scraped by against London rivals West Ham on Saturday, before being embarrassed in Croatia in their group stage opener on Tuesday.

And it proved to be the decisive result for American owner Boehly who has ruthlessly relieved Tuchel of his duties after less than two years in charge.
Incredibly, Chelsea’s clash against Zagreb was Tuchel’s 100th game at the helm since replacing Frank Lampard in the dugout in January 2021.

A Chelsea statement read: “Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Thomas Tuchel.
“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the Club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.

“Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.
“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as it continues its hard work to take the Club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.
“Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the Club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach.
“There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made.”
According to the Telegraph, Tuchel lost the faith of Boehly and his players.
And they state that his future at Chelsea would have been in doubt even if they had claimed three points against Zagreb.
It has been said that first team coach Anthony Barry will likely take charge on an interim basis for the meantime as Chelsea look for a new manager.

At the time of writing, Wesley Fofana – who joined from Leicester for £70million last month – is the only Chelsea player to post about Tuchel.
Taking to his Instagram story, the French centre-back shared an imagine of the ex-Borussia Dortmund gaffer embracing him.

Chelsea verdict: Now is Chilwell’s time to shine and impress Southgate ahead of World Cup as Shaw rots on Man Utd bench

BEN CHILWELL is starting to find his feet at the right time with the World Cup just around the corner. The Chelsea left-back, 25, missed 178 days of action in the last year following an ACL injury.
Chilwell impressed again as he looks to regain full fitness and put himself in contention for a starting Chelsea and England spotCredit: Reuters
Such injuries are hard to bounce back from but Chilwell has shown promising signs of shaking off the rust in the new campaign and getting back to his old ways.
He has made five Premier League appearances and has one goal and two assists to his name.
And in Chelsea’s Champions League group stage opener against Dinamo Zagreb, Chilwell showed he’s more than capable – despite the Blues falling to a 1-0 defeat on Croatian soil.
Chilwell offered a good outlet out wide on the left, pressing high up the pitch to get balls into the opposition penalty area.

He thought he had another assist to his name in the second half as he was found by a searching ball over the top of Dinamo’s defence.
Chilwell played the ball across the face of goal and debutant Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang swept the ball home thinking he had got off to the perfect start to life at Chelsea – but the offside flag spoiled the party.
He was then subbed for summer signing Marc Cucurella in the 71st minute.
The ex-Leicester ace has a golden opportunity to impress England boss Gareth Southgate and stake a claim to the starting left-back spot.

His main competition, Euro 2020 final goal scorer Luke Shaw, is marooned on Manchester United’s bench in a World Cup year.
New boss Erik ten Hag is instead opting for summer signing Tyrell Malacia on the left side of the defence.
And the Dutchman may be hesitant to rotate with the Red Devils on a rich run of form having won their last four league games.
Chilwell has 16 Chelsea games to impress Southgate, as well as an international break later this month, to put himself in good standing.
The Three Lions are closing the curtain on what was a torrid Nations League campaign.
In June, England recorded two losses to Hungary, including a 4-0 defeat at Molineux.
England also played out draws against European champions Italy and rivals Germany, capping off June conceding six and scoring just once.

Fans all say same thing as Chelsea’s new £70m transfer Wesley Fofana left for dust as Dinamo Zagreb take shock lead

WESLEY FOFANA came under-fire just 13 minutes into his Champions League debut for Chelsea against Dinamo Zagreb tonight. The Blues forked out a whopping £70million to Leicester City for the French defender last week.

Fofana, 21, made his first start for his new club in Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League victory over West Ham.
And that should have led to him lining-up full of confidence for tonight’s European showdown in Croatia.
However, despite Chelsea being the heavy favourites, they found themselves trailing early doors to Dinamo at the Maksimir Stadium.
And it appears that many of those watching felt that Fofana could have done a whole lot more to stop it.

The hosts caught the visitors on the counter attack as Bruno Petkovic won a header against Kalidou Koulibaly that sent Mislav Orsic on his way.
The Croatia international controlled it on his chest and then left Fofana for dust as he used his frightening pace to race clear on goal.

With Fofana failing to catch him, he then kept his cool to dink the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga to break the deadlock.
And afterwards many were pointing the finger of blame at Fofana.

Another wrote: “£70 million spent on Fofana and he’s just been made to look like a League 2 defender with the pace of your grandparents.”
As a fellow viewer commented: “They should arrest the whole Leicester board for fraud.”
While a cheeky Leicester fan, still disgruntled over the manner of the centre-half’s exit, also joined in.
They tweeted: “Fofana dreamed of playing in the Champions League just so he could get skinned by some donny from Dinamo Zagreb.” More

Edouard Mendy ‘REJECTS new Chelsea contract after being offered less than £190k-a-week backup keeper Kepa’

EDOUARD MENDY has reportedly rejected a contract offer from Chelsea that was worth LESS than Kepa Arrizabalaga’s deal. The 30-year-old stopper was proposed less lucrative terms than backup goalie Kepa’s £190,000-a-week earnings.

That’s despite Mendy being first choice between the sticks at Stamford Bridge, and Kepa resigned to bench duty.
And the Senegalese ace has turned down an initial offer from Chelsea, according to the Evening Standard.
Kepa was handed a deal worth nearly £200k-a-week when he was signed from Athletic Bilbao for £71million in 2018.
Mendy meanwhile has been one of the lowest earners at Stamford Bridge since his £22m move from Rennes in 2020.

Academy graduate Reece James penned a new £250k-a-week deal last week, and now Chelsea want to secure the futures of Mendy and Mason Mount.
N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are also in the final year of their deals, with the Blues keen to extend with both midfielders.
Although Mendy’s contract situation is believed to be a complex one.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel insisted the situation between the sticks at Stamford Bridge isn’t one he is worrying about.

He said: “The situation is calm. We have two fantastic goalkeepers, two fantastic guys.

Aubameyang a ‘proper striker’ and can turn Chelsea in title challengers, says Kovacic after £12m transfer from Barcelona

MATEO KOVACIC claims Chelsea finally have a “proper” striker in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. And the Croatian midfield ace prays it will transform his team into title contenders — instead of also-rans.

Chelsea’s struggle to find a centre-forward capable of handling English football — and the pressure of being at one of Europe’s top clubs —  coincided with them fading as a domestic force.
Although Kovacic is focused on European action tonight back at the club where he started his career, he has his eyes set on title glory with ex-Arsenal star Aubameyang.

The Gabon striker, 33, has just joined from Barcelona for £12million.
And ahead of a Champions League Group E opener against Dinamo Zagreb, Kovacic, 28, said: “I can say he will be a big addition to us.

“He is a proper striker and scorer, which we have missed in the last few years.
“We haven’t had someone that scores 20-25 goals per season, which you obviously need to win the title.
“For him, it is normal to score goals and I hope he will do it here at Chelsea.
“I haven’t seen him in training yet but he trained yesterday with the team — and he is a great player.

“He has scored goals everywhere, so we are looking forward to having him in our squad and he will be a big addition.”
Chelsea have not won the league since bad-boy Diego Costa was at the club in 2017.
The brooding striker’s successors Alvaro Morata, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku all flopped.
And the Blues have ended up finishing fifth, third, fourth, fourth and third since being crowned champions under Antonio Conte.
Kovacic has won the Champions League and Europa League since joining first on loan in 2018.
But every player covets success over 38 games in the hardest league in the world.
The dynamic midfielder will be a big part of that from now on as he recovers from a knee injury which has been bothering him since pre-season.
Austria-born, he will receive a warm welcome here this evening as a returning legend who started life at Dinamo Zagreb.
He then embarked on a tour of Europe’s elite teams  — including Real Madrid  and Inter Milan as well as Chelsea.
Stamford Bridge boss Thomas Tuchel said: “Kova is a fantastic player of course, but on top of it he is also a  fantastic person in personality. Such  an unbelievably good team player.
“It is a pleasure to be his coach and a pleasure for everyone to be his team-mate.
“It is important to have him with us. He is very emotional and very happy to be back here.
“It is his city, his country for which he plays with a lot of pride. We are happy that he is now back.
“He is finding his shape and we are happy he is back on the pitch training.”
Kovacic’s influence at Blues is growing off the pitch and on it.
He revealed chairman Todd Boehly picked his brains about trying to sign fellow Croat defender Josko Gvardiol, 20, from RB Leipzig during the summer window.
Chelsea had an £80m offer rejected but Kovacic hopes he can still be reunited with his international team-mate at club level.
Kovacic said: “At the club they asked me about Josko — I told them all the best.

“I don’t need to say  anything about his football, they know just what kind of a player he is, and his  character is excellent.
“He has a great career ahead of him and I hope we’ll play together in the club.”

Earlier this summer, it was reported that Mount is ready to discuss signing a new deal.
But Cesar Azpilicueta and Armando Broja have both penned contract extensions ahead of him.
And Reece James looks set to become the next player to further his stay in West London.
That’s despite reports Mount was next in line for contract talks.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano said back in June: “Next Chelsea player to discuss new deal will be Mason Mount.
“Talks are already in place since long time and he’s waiting for the club to send new, final proposal. Negotiations will continue soon.”

And now Boehly has liked the tweet, an indication that Chelsea will soon open a dialogue to complete a deal with the attacker.

Chelsea ‘will target new midfielder in January transfer window with Ajax star Edson Alvarez top of wishlist’

CHELSEA will look to bring in a new central midfielder in the January transfer window, according to reports. And Ajax star Edson Alvarez, 24, is thought to be the Blues’ main target.

Thomas Tuchel has been fielding a depleted midfield in recent weeks.
N’Golo Kante is out injured, Mateo Kovacic has only just returned from a lay-off, and Conor Gallagher is struggling to find the form he showed on loan at Crystal Palace last season.
Chelsea tried to address the situation on deadline day after suffering their second Premier League defeat of the season away at Southampton.
And it was a Saints player who they tried to steal away from St Mary’s, but Tuchel’s men saw a £50million bid for Romeo Lavia rejected.

That was after, according to the Evening Standard, Ajax had told them that Mexican international Alvarez was not for sale despite Chelsea’s £40m bid.
He has made 108 appearances for the Eredivisie champions, scoring nine goals and assisting a further five.
And following the sale of Antony to Manchester United, Ajax insisted they would not get rid of Alvarez, leading Chelsea to search for alternatives.
When their bid for Lavia was then declined by Southampton, they opted to secure a loan deal for Juventus man Denis Zakaria instead.

Yet despite the arrival of Zakaria, new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is still keen to strengthen further in the January window.
Dinamo Moscow’s attacking midfielder Arsen Zakharyan, 19, is one option being discussed.
And they are also working on making Zakaria’s move permanent, with the loan deal including an option to buy worth £26m.
