Enzo Fernandez is Chelsea’s £107m ‘musician’ – ready to direct their transfer revolution towards winning trophies again

IN north western Buenos Aires, you have to be pretty special to stand out as an Enzo.Virtually every boy in the neighbourhood is named after River Plate’s iconic midfielder Enzo Francescoli, who had two spells with the club in the 80s and 90s.

Enzo Fernandez was just the same.
But now he is out on his own as Chelsea’s new marquee signing and the most expensive player in British history.
At £107million, Argentina’s World Cup-winning midfielder arrives in England saddled with huge expectation to deliver on the monstrous fee — and quickly.
Fernandez said: “I am grateful to Chelsea and its ownership for doing everything they could to make me a part of this project.

“I’m happy and excited to join the Pride of London, to play in the best league in the world and to compete for the biggest trophies.”
Chelsea owner Todd Boehly added: “We are signing one of the brightest talents in global football.
“We are excited to add him to Graham’s squad, we are sure he will form an important part of our team going forward.
“Enzo has demonstrated his ability at the highest levels so we’re looking forward to seeing what he does in blue!”

Maybe Boehly and manager Graham Potter saw something in the player’s nickname that travelled with him from South America when he joined Benfica last summer.
Team-mates labelled him ‘El musico’ — ‘the musician’.
So-called because Fernandez was known to conduct the entire team like a 10-piece orchestra from midfield.
He is 22 and has played only 71 club matches in his career.
The 72nd could come on Friday night in a home game against Fulham.
Little known outside of the hipster community before November, Enzo is expected to lead Chelsea’s rapidly-expanding and expensive international brigade into better times.

Chelsea are 10th in the Prem, out of both domestic cups and, in less than two weeks, face Borussia Dortmund to remain in the Champions League knockout stages.
So Fernandez walks into a club facing an uphill battle just to qualify for the Europa League and he will be expected to hit the ground running.
Discovered by renowned Argentinian scout Pablo Esquivel at five years old, he was considered different to all the other Enzos even then.
Esquivel said: “When he was five you could tell he was different, different class.
“He was the leader of the team and all his passes were very clear. It was crystal clear he would take the right path.”
Fernandez’s background is a familiar one of relative poverty.
His parents were poor and the sacrifices they made to get him to where he is now remain a driving force.
The wallpaper of tattoos covering his body are not there to intimidate.
A small, innocuous inking at the base of his throat spells out ‘fe’ — the Portuguese word for ‘faith’.
Coincidentally, his new team-mate Mykhailo Mudryk has an identical one on his hands.
The Fernandez family are River Plate fanatics, hence his name.
Enzo Francescoli went on to play for Marseille and was so good that France great Zinedine Zidane named a kid after him, too.

There is no doubt the rapid transformation of Fernandez from impressive, young midfielder to world star is a massive risk for Chelsea.
Just a few months ago, he was playing alongside Julian Alvarez for River Plate in the Copa Libertadores.
Both players are now in the Prem and world champions.
River Plate sold Fernandez for just £16m last July.
They obviously knew a good thing too, as they insisted upon a 25 per cent sell-on clause.
It means they now pocket an additional £26m, taking the combined fee for Fernandez to £42m, making him the most expensive Argentinian ever.
But striker Alvarez, who scored six goals in one match they played together, cost Manchester City just £14m after they shopped direct.
Chelsea have piled pressure on a young man’s shoulders by using middle men Benfica and paid through the nose.
Described as a box-to-box midfielder, he uses both feet equally well, can shoot, defend and leads.
One Argentinian source told SunSport: “Chelsea have a new captain ready and waiting for when they want one.”
At Benfica, he has been most comfortable in a two-man midfield where he can roam alongside a defensive-minded player.
More cautious observers from inside Stamford Bridge suggest it is dangerous to put so much faith in a player from watching him at the World Cup.
There is no doubt Fernandez has quality — he was catapulted into Argentina’s World Cup squad after just two friendlies.
He was voted young player of the tournament and took home a winners’ medal.
There is also no debate about his passion for football.
At just 15 he produced an open letter to his idol Lionel Messi, who was considering international retirement.
The teenage Fernandez wrote: “How are we going to convince you to carry on playing if the rest of us suck at football?

“How are we going to convince you if we have had only one per cent of the pressure you endure every day, Lionel.”
Fernandez is about to get a little bit more of an idea what that pressure feels like.

‘Class A circus’ – PSG accuse Chelsea of wrecking Hakim Ziyech’s career after paperwork cock-up saw transfer scrapped

CHELSEA have been accused of wrecking Hakim Ziyech’s career amid the “shambolic” collapse of his loan move to Paris Saint-Germain.The French giants launched a blistering attack on the Blues, blaming them for bungling documents after the Moroccan midfielder’s registration missed Tuesday’s 11pm transfer deadline by four minutes.

SunSport understands fuming Ziyech, 29, even called Chelsea’s billionaire US owner Todd Boehly to plead with him to sort out the mess. And PSG now have serious reservations about doing any future business with the London club.
PSG branded the paperwork cock-up a “Class A circus” and a club insider revealed: “The way Chelsea conducted themselves was shambolic and disrespectful. I can’t think of any other way to describe it.
“Now Hakim is going back to a club where he’s not wanted and probably hasn’t got a place.
“Chelsea have ruined six months of his career. It’s really poor behaviour, the club treated this transfer in a frivolous way.

“There is a sense of utter dismay about the way Chelsea did this.
“It’s unacceptable for a club of their stature but this seems to sum up their way of doing business at the moment.”
PSG insist Chelsea ignored their initial loan agreement email and a number of phone calls, responding 75 minutes later with an incorrect, unsigned document.
The Ligue Un champions also claim the Blues sent a SECOND incorrect, unsigned document before the correct version was finally received three minutes after the deadline.

Ziyech’s transfer was then registered at 11.04pm — four minutes after the cut-off point.
French League chiefs turned down PSG appeals to ratify it, ruling there had been an “unjustifiable delay” in sending the documents to them.
Chelsea dispute PSG’s version of events but admit “technical errors” delayed the paperwork.
The PSG insider added: “Hakim was in our office in Paris from noon on Tuesday, begging Boehly to explain the hold-up and sort it out. He was even ready to contribute to the deal to get released.
“This was Chelsea’s fault, pure and simple. It was unprofessional.”
The collapse of the Ziyech transfer came at the same time Chelsea were successfully completing their £106million British record signing of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.
Ziyech, who has played ten times in the Premier League this season, is now in limbo and set to be cut from the London club’s Champions League squad in the coming days to make way for some of their new signings.
Chelsea say Ziyech travelled to Paris ahead of the botched deal without permission but will not punish him.
Newcastle and Spurs were linked with Ziyech while Roma wanted to sign him before PSG made their late swoop. More

Chelsea hero William Gallas issues Benoit Badiashile warning and urges more time for under-fire boss Graham Potter

CHELSEA hero William Gallas is confident about Benoit Badiashile’s arrival at Stamford Bridge but hinted he will have to improve on his physicality.Badiashile was one of eight signings the Blues made during a very busy January transfer window as he arrived from Monaco after a £35million deal.

Gallas, who spent five years at Stamford Bridge since his arrival from Marseille in 2001, is very confident about his fellow Frenchman who stood out in Ligue 1.
The former France international used to play in the same position as the West Londoners’ newest centre-back and is confident he can form a strong duo with in-form Thiago Silva.
But the 45-year-old claims Badiashile struggled in France when it came to physical challenges and will have to up his game in the Premier League.
Speaking to Genting Casino, Gallas said: “I think he can form a strong partnership with Thiago Silva.

“Technically, he is really good. He has a presence and is very calm with the ball at his feet.
“He has a good left foot and is very composed. All the ingredients are there.
“I want to see how he responds to a physical challenge. When he has to go one against one with a good opponent.
“At Monaco, his weakness was his physicality – he struggled against bigger opponents in France.

“We know in England that the Premier League is a lot more physical than Ligue 1, so we will have to see how he responds to this challenge.”
Badiashile will have to hit the ground running quickly as Chelsea have found themselves in a tight spot after tumbling down to 10th place in the Premier League table.
The Blues’ manager Graham Potter has come under fire but Gallas claims club chiefs should show faith and give him one more season.
The ex-Arsenal and Tottenham ace believes Potter deserves more time after his stunning work at Brighton.

Gallas added: “I think it will depend on the owner [Todd Boehly], it is his choice.
“I think Chelsea should give Graham Potter one more season because he joined the club when the season started, which is always difficult for any manager, so it is hard to judge him properly and, for me, he has to stay.
“We know that in football, a manager can be firedat any time, but I do think he deserves the opportunity to show the club what he can do because he did well with Brighton.
“Maybe Potter can do well at Chelsea. We will know at the end of the 2024 season if he is capable of managing a top club.” More

The 33-year-old wing-back joined West Brom on loan until the end of the campaign.
Albrighton has barely featured for Leicester this season, starting just once in the Premier League.

Fans spot HUGE blunder in Chelsea’s transfer plan after splashing out £600m on new players, including £107m on Fernandez

CHELSEA supporters have been quick to highlight a HUGE blunder in the club’s transfer recruitment despite owner Todd Boehly splashing out £600m on new players. The Blues spent a stunning £326m in the January transfer window – which is more than a third of the total £815m paid across the whole of the Premier League.

Enzo Fernandez broke the British transfer record by joining Chelsea for £107m on deadline day.
The World Cup-winning Argentina midfielder became the EIGHTH arrival in January alone, following the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix to Stamford Bridge.
However, despite all of the new additions, fans have been quick to point out one glaring omission to Graham Potter’s squad.
One wrote: “Gotta admire Chelsea’s transfer policy. Struggling for goals so spunk hundreds of millions on every position but a striker.”

Another tweeted: “Just buying anyone and still haven’t addressed the fact they have no striker. I’d argue Chelsea’s window was one of the worst ever.”
A fellow social media user said: “Chelsea still haven’t strengthened in the area they needed to in the shape of a striker. It’s all good throwing money down but there’s no thought process to it.”

Another commented: “Chelsea did everything but buy a striker. I thought that’s what they needed.”

They brought in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to replace him, but the Gabonese ace is barely getting a kick under Potter and has only scored three times in 17 outings.
Fellow summer signing Raheem Sterling is joint-top scorer with six along with Kai Havertz, but most of the Stamford Bridge faithful are still bemused that no traditional No.9 was brought in with the Blues languishing tenth in the top-flight and facing a tough Champions League last-16 clash with Borussia Dortmund.
Another tweeted: “Easy to forget that Todd Boehly has splurged all of this money, yet Chelsea’s £100mill striker is still out on loan to the same club they paid that figure… Remarkable.”
While another added: “Chelsea have spent close to a billion and still have Havertz as main striker?”

Chelsea set for huge transfer exodus with SEVEN first-team stars on chopping block after £606m spree

CHELSEA are set for a summer sales extravaganza – to help balance the books after their unprecedented spending spree.New Blues chief Todd Boehly has overseen deals which could add up to a staggering total £606m this season.

Chelsea star Marc Cucurella may also have to leave after the January splurgeCredit: Rex
While offering long-term contracts to stagger payments – in accounting terms, over up to eight years will offset the official cost of the deals – Chelsea do have to start shifting some excess players to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.
And the need to sell will be heightened if Chelsea do not get back into the top four and miss out on the minimum £80m income from TV and gate receipts of reaching the knockout round of next season’s Champions League.
Chelsea’s January splurge of up to £329.9m, capped by the British record £107m capture of Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, was on top of the huge summer outlay.
It meant the Blues spent more last month than ALL the clubs in the other Big Five leagues – Spain, Germany, Italy and France – COMBINED.
    Read More on Chelsea
Fernandez’s fee plus salary will add around £19m per year to Chelsea’s outgoings, estimated to bring them to a likely paper “loss” of around £180m in 2022-2023.
Prem rules limit clubs to losses of £35m per season over three years, with Uefa regulations allowing clubs to lose £26.5m over the same period, set to rise to £90m from next term.

But accountancy loopholes and “allowable losses” of £30m each year for spending on youth and women’s football and community projects mean Chelsea’s likely figures would still, just, be inside the permitted Prem loss level.
And while they are on course to bust the Uefa limit by around £22m this season, Euro chiefs only expect around 15 per cent of any fines – PSG had to pay only £8.4m of the £56m punishment levied in September  – to be paid up front if clubs show they are taking steps to address the matter.

For Chelsea, that would mean selling the players who do not appear to have a future under Graham Potter – and it was notable that all seven of the players signed on full contracts last month were 22 or under.
Keeper Edouard Mendy, now second choice, summer defensive flop Kalidou Koulibaly, Hakim Ziyech, potentially N’Golo Kante, Marc Cucurella and home-grown midfielders Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are all potential discards.
Any money raised by the sales of Gallagher or Loftus-Cheek would also see their full fee go straight into the accounts to help balance the “amortised” fees owed for this season’s 15 signed players.
But without the Champions League income – Chelsea have already banked £82m including gate money this season – the finances will require significant sales.
It cranks up the pressure on Potter and his new recruits, currently 10 points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United in 10th position, to turn the domestic season round – unless they earn qualification by winning the Champions League.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the Stamford Bridge club have struck a deal with Saints for the 17-year-old, pipping a host of clubs including Leeds to his signature.
Morgan is expected to put pen to paper on a three-year in West London after undergoing a medical today.
The teenager will link up with the Chelsea academy again to continue his development, despite being on the fringes of the Saints first team.
He first joined the youth set-up aged eight but left for Southampton due to the travel between his home and the club’s Cobham training ground.

Morgan proved his class in front of goal with 27 strikes for the Southampton Under-16s last season – and a further 13 for the U18s.

Southampton youth coach Louis Carey said the rising star is “one of the best” finishers he had witnessed at the academy.

Morgan appeared for the Saints’ U21s in the EFL Trophy earlier this season.
And he was selected in the first-team squads for the Carabao Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday in November and then the FA Cup victory at Crystal Palace last month.
Morgan is understood to have rejected an offer for a first professional contract at Southampton, where he had 18 months left on his current deal, before leaving for Chelsea.
He follows in the moves made by goalkeeper Eddie Beach and forward Tyler Dibling, who both moved from Southampton to the Blues last summer – although the latter returned due to homesickness.
On the international stage, Morgan has a prolific record of six goals in seven games for England U17s – including back-to-back braces against Georgia and Israel in European U17 Championship qualifying.
The teenage talent becomes Chelsea’s ninth winter signing – and takes the spending by Todd Boehly for the window beyond £330m.
Almost a third of that went on the £107m British transfer fee paid to Benfica for Enzo Fernandez.
Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke have also linked up with Graham Potter’s squad.
Malo Gusto joined from Lyon but has been loaned back for the remainder of the season while Joao Felix arrived on a temporary switch from Atletico Madrid in a bonkers January transfer window.
