Chelsea ‘had pants pulled down’ in £300m January transfer splurge with Blues still way off Man City, claims Murphy

CHELSEA had their “pants taken down” after splashing over £300million in the January transfer window. That is according to Danny Murphy, who claims the Blues paid over the odds and still have a team in which the majority of their starting line-up would never make it at Manchester City.

The West Londoners had a very busy January transfer window that saw owner Todd Boehly spend a staggering £326m on eight signings.
In fact, Graham Potter’s side spent as much this month as the entire Premier League did in January 2022.
Chelsea also shattered the British transfer record by splurging a whopping £107m for Enzo Fernandez on deadline day.
But Murphy claims the London giants were “bent over” as he believes Fernandez doesn’t justify the highest fee in Premier League history.

The Liverpool hero admits the 2022 World Cup’s Best Young Player is a good midfielder but not as good as City’s Rodri and Manchester United’s Casemiro.
Murphy told talkSPORT: “I think they are overpaying for players and I still don’t think the majority of their first XI gets anywhere near City’s team.
    “Not really [impressed].
“I watched a few of his [Fernandez] games live. He’s decent, but not worth £100m. They’ve been absolutely bent over there.

Moises Caicedo back in Brighton training after having dream Arsenal or Chelsea transfer rejected in January window

MOISES CAICEDO has been bombarded by different voices with different agendas over the past fortnight – now there is just one he should listen to.Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has been clear from the start that now was not the time, the opportunities in the summer will be bigger and better.

Now Brighton will want Caicedo to help them challenge for a European placeCredit: Instagram @officialbhafc
Caicedo is now back in training on the South Coast having been denied a late move to Arsenal or Chelsea, despite his public plea to be allowed to go.
Owner Tony Bloom stood firm and De Zerbi told the 21-year-old that he could still achieve something special at Brighton over the next four months.
It is a spell which could open up even more horizons for the midfielder.
The Seagulls are already expecting bids to come in the summer, and not only from Arsenal.

While the Gunners are still keen on adding both Caicedo and Declan Rice to their midfield this summer, Liverpool, Chelsea and a number of big European clubs are circling.
Brighton have the chance to achieve European football for the first time in their history this summer.
Should Caicedo help them, then the next window could bring the ideal situation for everyone.
The Ecuador international would have the pick of the best clubs in Europe and the Seagulls would be able to command a huge fee, as they often do.

For now, the midfielder’s reputation among Brighton fans hangs in the balance.
Many supporters, like the club, feel that their star man has been woefully advised by new agents looking to make a splash.
Caicedo’s social media post, drafted by his representatives and still present on his Instagram account, went down equally as bad at Arsenal as it did at the Amex.
But now the talking should be done on the pitch by Caicedo and Caicedo alone.
Having been told to stay away from training for the final days of the window, the hope is that he will have got his head right and be ready to feature against Bournemouth on Saturday.
De Zerbi will be the one to make that call, but their FA Cup win over Liverpool while the midfielder was banished from the squad shows that the Italian is acting from a position of strength – especially considering he also sanctioned the sale of Leandro Trossard due to his poor behaviour last month.
But the former Sassuolo manager will be in no doubt that if he is to help Brighton realise their dream of a top six finish or some silverware this season then he will, at some point, need Caicedo again.
It is no use coming back in a sulk.
    Read More on The Sun
Even if the South American does not want to be there, the task now is to prove that he is worthy of a bidding war come the end of the season.
No more behind the scenes antics from agents or poorly timed public outbursts, Caicedo has four months to restore and enhance his reputation before either leading the Seagulls into Europe or heading for bigger and better things himself. More

PSG hoped to exploit Fifa loophole to sign Zenit Saint Petersburg’s Malcom on free transfer after missing out on Ziyech

According to L’Equipe, the reigning French champions’ sporting advisor Luis Campos tried to land the Brazilian for free by exploiting a Fifa loophole.
That rule allows foreign players from Russian and Ukrainian clubs to temporarily cancel their contracts due to the war.
FIFA made that decision after Russian president Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion in Ukraine back in February 2022.
Football clubs and players will only be able to use that rule until June.

But in Malcom’s case, it was discovered that Zenit had inserted a clause into his extension last summer which stipulates that he can’t make himself a free agent.
Therefore, the Russian club can demand a £27m fee for the forward.
However, PSG were unwilling and unable to meet the ex-Brazil Under-23 international’s release clause.
That is why the Ligue 1 giants turned to Ziyech and almost signed him on deadline day.

In fact, the West Londoners spent as much this month as the entire Premier League did in January 2022.

Three new signings can completely transform Chelsea’s feeble attack under Potter with Fernandez, Madueke and Mudryk

HAVING bought the club off of Roman Abramovich last May, American businessman Todd Boehly now has two transfer windows under his belt at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have enjoyed football’s greatest riches over the past two decades during the Abramovich era and so Boehly had gargantuan shoes to fill.
Chelsea have spent £326m in January on players including Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Noni Madueke
But the American hasn’t messed around, spending more money than any other club in the history of the January market, splashing out £326 million to sign eight new players, including Mykhailo Mudryk for £88million as well as Enzo Fernandez for £107million.
The signings have been astonishing with others arriving including Joao Felix, Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos and David Fofana.
But can these players flip Chelsea’s fortunes on their head this season?
    Enzo Fernandez
Having been linked with Manchester United during his time with River Plate, Enzo Fernandez made a smart decision to sign for Benfica as a stepping stone to one of Europe’s top five leagues.
    READ MORE CHELSEA
The Argentine star was guaranteed playing time under German coach Roger Schmidt which meant that he would likely receive a call-up to the Argentina national team for the World Cup in Qatar.
This is exactly how things worked out.
Fernandez not only received a call-up to Lionel Scaloni’s side but played a key role in helping his country lift the prize for the first time in 36 years.
Fernandez is now the most expensive signing in English football history, breaking the £100million fee Manchester City spent on Jack Grealish in 2021.

While the price tag may weigh heavily on his shoulders, Fernandez is still an astute signing for the Blues and a player who was desperately needed at Stamford Bridge.
Jorginho has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League since joining Chelsea in 2018 from Napoli.
The Italian was the key man for Chelsea to break opposition lines and to dictate the tempo of their game in the middle of the park.
The 31-year-old has been moved on to rivals Arsenal, but his replacement is sharper, more mobile and has a much higher ceiling.
Fernandez’s role at Chelsea under Graham Potter will not involve him being a marauding central midfielder or a box-to-box player but to simply keep things ticking, looking to move the ball around from side to side with his centre-backs.
Enzo Fernandez was a key player in the World Cup final
Fernandez has dropped beside the centre-backs to receive possession in space. Noticing the right-back pushing higher on the right, the Argentine midfielder plays a sumptuous switch of the play out to the flank, forcing the opponent to push across.
The former River Plate youth product will be important to help Chelsea move the opposition in order to find gaps in their defensive block.
As Pep Guardiola famously once said: “We do not pass to move the ball, we pass to move the opposition.”
Having a player like Fernandez will be so important for Chelsea to move the ball well around the back and midfield as he is excellent when receiving under pressure and is superb at switching the play from side to side.
The reason this is so vital is because the opposition will shift their defensive block from side to side as well in correlation with the movement of the ball in order to defend the ball-side.
However, it is extremely difficult to do this consistently without gaps opening up in the block and so this is where Fernandez’s ability will shine through.
Chelsea’s new signing will be the player tasked with breaking the lines of the opposition to play to higher areas of the pitch when these spaces do open up in the opponent’s defensive block.
Enzo Fernandez’s pass map from the World Cup final
Having attracted Sporting into a deeper area, Fernandez notices a free man standing in the middle of the pitch and plays an excellent through pass into the player’s feet to break the opposition’s lines.
Having a mobile deep-lying playmaker capable of playing between the lines is something that all top sides must possess in order to play a possession-based style of football.
Liverpool have Thiago, Arsenal have Thomas Partey with Jorginho as a rotation option, Manchester City have Rodri, Manchester United have Christian Eriksen and new signing Marcel Sabitzer, Newcastle United have Bruno Guimaraes, and now Chelsea have Enzo Fernandez.
Potter will be hoping that Fernandez’s impact on the team is instant as the Blues don’t possess any other player capable of fulfilling this role.

    Mykhailo Mudryk
Mykhailo Mudryk joined Chelsea for £88million on a lucrative eight-and-a-half year deal from Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.
His debut cameo against Liverpool was certainly promising as Mudryk attempted more dribbles than any other player on the pitch despite coming on for merely 35 minutes.
Mudryk threatens to dribble inside Joe Gomez inside the box but quickly drops his shoulder and pushes the ball to the left, creating an excellent goalscoring opportunity for himself.

The Ukrainian will be a menacing player in the final third for Chelsea due to his ability to dribble past opponents at ease.
Mudryk has a low centre of gravity and can go either way against an onrushing defender which has become more and more important in the modern game for a winger.
This means that the 22-year-old is capable of dribbling inside as well as outside, making it extremely difficult for defenders to predict his movement when squaring him up.
A primary method of dribbling that Mudryk uses is cutting inside before dropping his shoulder and pushing the ball in the opposite direction to fool the defender.
On his debut for Chelsea against Liverpool, Mudryk completed three successful dribbles into the penalty area which averaged out at around one every ten minutes.
Furthermore, over the course of the 2022/23 campaign for Shakhtar, the man dubbed “the Ukrainian Neymar” completed 70 carries into the box in just half a season.
Mykhailo Mudryk is currently the fastest player in the Premier League
Mudryk was found at the back post with an excellent floated cross. His first touch let him down, but the Ukrainian could have easily opened his account on his debut due to being in the right position.
Nonetheless, Mudryk has also proven himself to be a threat in the opposition’s penalty area.
In all competitions for club and country this season, Mudryk averaged 0.52 goals per game which is one every two matches.
This is an exceptional record for a winger whose primary function is assisting others as opposed to putting the ball in the net themselves.
These added goals can only be beneficial for Chelsea who have massively struggled in front of goal this season, having scored 29 times despite having an xG of 38.74 in all competitions.
Even from his debut, the signs were clear that Mudryk will be chipping in with goals in the latter half of the season for the Blues as the new signing found himself in some excellent goalscoring positions.
    Noni Madueke
Another player who can potentially change the club’s fortunes is Noni Madueke.
Having worked with Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy at Jong PSV and with the PSV Eindhoven first-team this season, Madueke’s game has been elevated to a different level.
While new Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo took all the plaudits with the Dutch giants for his outrageous performances, Madueke was quietly going about his business, improving more and more with each passing game.
Madueke is the perfect man to add something different to Potter’s frontline, being a left-footer who primarily operates as a right-winger.
Noni Madueke likes to hug the right touchline
With Mudryk playing as a right-footer on the left and Madueke on the right, it is clear that the former Brighton coach is looking for something similar to Liverpool’s frontline, with more goal-minded players playing in the forward line.
In the past, Chelsea have neglected attacking prowess in their front three, putting a higher emphasis on creativity and so that may be about to change.
Madueke is undoubtedly a goalscoring winger.
The Englishman’s offensive play is resemblant to that of former Chelsea man Arjen Robben.
Madueke collected the ball wide on the right, dropped his shoulder and dribbled inside to the edge of the area before smashing the ball past AC Milan’s goalkeeper in a recent friendly.
The 21-year-old likes to look for the ball out wide, hugging the touchline before dribbling inside the backline and unleashing thunderous strikes on his left foot.
This season, Madueke is averaging an xG of 0.41 per game while scoring 0.47 times per game, almost one in every two matches for PSV.
Of course, the changeover from the Eredivisie to the Premier League will be something that Madueke has to adapt to but given he played academy football with Crystal Palace and Tottenham, the transition may be smoother than normal.
One of Madueke’s best attributes is that he doesn’t rely on team-mates to create chances for him, similarly to fellow new arrival Malo Gusto.
The England U21s international is scintillating when running with the ball at his feet and loves to take on the opposition’s full-back.
This season alone, Madueke has averaged 13.03 dribbles per game with an accuracy of 56.1 per cent as well as registering 66 carries into the penalty area, primarily coming from the right side.
Madueke has shaped his body up to shoot on his left foot. However, instead, he drags it back onto his right, fooling three opposition players in the meantime before getting a right-footed shot away which trickled into the net.
The attacker is a threat for any defender inside the box and his sharp dribbling makes it extremely difficult to stop him from getting past his man to create space for a shot.
The only downside to having Madueke is that he is not the most creative player in Chelsea’s squad with just two assists this season and a total expected assists of merely 2.66.
This means that Potter will need to deploy a more creative player in the starting line-up to complement Madueke’s lack of creativity.
So what does this all mean?
None of these players are Premier League proven.
Only Madueke has prior experience playing in English football but even that was at academy level.
    Read More on The Sun
Nevertheless, with the money spent over the course of Boehly’s short reign at Stamford Bridge, the new owner has put all his eggs in one basket in the hopes that these signings can showcase their quality in West London.
Chelsea are really struggling this season under Potter but if these new players can gel together and form a cohesive unit, the Blues may be on for a very exciting end to the campaign. More

Enzo Fernandez is Chelsea’s £107m ‘musician’ – ready to direct their transfer revolution towards winning trophies again

Enzo Fernandez was just the same.
But now he is out on his own as Chelsea’s new marquee signing and the most expensive player in British history.
At £107million, Argentina’s World Cup-winning midfielder arrives in England saddled with huge expectation to deliver on the monstrous fee — and quickly.
Fernandez said: “I am grateful to Chelsea and its ownership for doing everything they could to make me a part of this project.

“I’m happy and excited to join the Pride of London, to play in the best league in the world and to compete for the biggest trophies.”

“We are excited to add him to Graham’s squad, we are sure he will form an important part of our team going forward.

Maybe Boehly and manager Graham Potter saw something in the player’s nickname that travelled with him from South America when he joined Benfica last summer.
Team-mates labelled him ‘El musico’ — ‘the musician’.
So-called because Fernandez was known to conduct the entire team like a 10-piece orchestra from midfield.
He is 22 and has played only 71 club matches in his career.
The 72nd could come on Friday night in a home game against Fulham.
Little known outside of the hipster community before November, Enzo is expected to lead Chelsea’s rapidly-expanding and expensive international brigade into better times.

Chelsea are 10th in the Prem, out of both domestic cups and, in less than two weeks, face Borussia Dortmund to remain in the Champions League knockout stages.
So Fernandez walks into a club facing an uphill battle just to qualify for the Europa League and he will be expected to hit the ground running.
Discovered by renowned Argentinian scout Pablo Esquivel at five years old, he was considered different to all the other Enzos even then.
Esquivel said: “When he was five you could tell he was different, different class.
“He was the leader of the team and all his passes were very clear. It was crystal clear he would take the right path.”
Fernandez’s background is a familiar one of relative poverty.
His parents were poor and the sacrifices they made to get him to where he is now remain a driving force.
The wallpaper of tattoos covering his body are not there to intimidate.
A small, innocuous inking at the base of his throat spells out ‘fe’ — the Portuguese word for ‘faith’.
Coincidentally, his new team-mate Mykhailo Mudryk has an identical one on his hands.
The Fernandez family are River Plate fanatics, hence his name.
Enzo Francescoli went on to play for Marseille and was so good that France great Zinedine Zidane named a kid after him, too.

There is no doubt the rapid transformation of Fernandez from impressive, young midfielder to world star is a massive risk for Chelsea.
Just a few months ago, he was playing alongside Julian Alvarez for River Plate in the Copa Libertadores.
Both players are now in the Prem and world champions.
River Plate sold Fernandez for just £16m last July.
They obviously knew a good thing too, as they insisted upon a 25 per cent sell-on clause.
It means they now pocket an additional £26m, taking the combined fee for Fernandez to £42m, making him the most expensive Argentinian ever.
But striker Alvarez, who scored six goals in one match they played together, cost Manchester City just £14m after they shopped direct.
Chelsea have piled pressure on a young man’s shoulders by using middle men Benfica and paid through the nose.
Described as a box-to-box midfielder, he uses both feet equally well, can shoot, defend and leads.
One Argentinian source told SunSport: “Chelsea have a new captain ready and waiting for when they want one.”
At Benfica, he has been most comfortable in a two-man midfield where he can roam alongside a defensive-minded player.
More cautious observers from inside Stamford Bridge suggest it is dangerous to put so much faith in a player from watching him at the World Cup.
There is no doubt Fernandez has quality — he was catapulted into Argentina’s World Cup squad after just two friendlies.
He was voted young player of the tournament and took home a winners’ medal.
There is also no debate about his passion for football.
At just 15 he produced an open letter to his idol Lionel Messi, who was considering international retirement.
The teenage Fernandez wrote: “How are we going to convince you to carry on playing if the rest of us suck at football?

‘Class A circus’ – PSG accuse Chelsea of wrecking Hakim Ziyech’s career after paperwork cock-up saw transfer scrapped

CHELSEA have been accused of wrecking Hakim Ziyech’s career amid the “shambolic” collapse of his loan move to Paris Saint-Germain.The French giants launched a blistering attack on the Blues, blaming them for bungling documents after the Moroccan midfielder’s registration missed Tuesday’s 11pm transfer deadline by four minutes.

SunSport understands fuming Ziyech, 29, even called Chelsea’s billionaire US owner Todd Boehly to plead with him to sort out the mess. And PSG now have serious reservations about doing any future business with the London club.
PSG branded the paperwork cock-up a “Class A circus” and a club insider revealed: “The way Chelsea conducted themselves was shambolic and disrespectful. I can’t think of any other way to describe it.
“Now Hakim is going back to a club where he’s not wanted and probably hasn’t got a place.
“Chelsea have ruined six months of his career. It’s really poor behaviour, the club treated this transfer in a frivolous way.

“There is a sense of utter dismay about the way Chelsea did this.

Ziyech’s transfer was then registered at 11.04pm — four minutes after the cut-off point.
French League chiefs turned down PSG appeals to ratify it, ruling there had been an “unjustifiable delay” in sending the documents to them.
Chelsea dispute PSG’s version of events but admit “technical errors” delayed the paperwork.
The PSG insider added: “Hakim was in our office in Paris from noon on Tuesday, begging Boehly to explain the hold-up and sort it out. He was even ready to contribute to the deal to get released.
“This was Chelsea’s fault, pure and simple. It was unprofessional.”
The collapse of the Ziyech transfer came at the same time Chelsea were successfully completing their £106million British record signing of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.
Ziyech, who has played ten times in the Premier League this season, is now in limbo and set to be cut from the London club’s Champions League squad in the coming days to make way for some of their new signings.
Chelsea say Ziyech travelled to Paris ahead of the botched deal without permission but will not punish him.
Newcastle and Spurs were linked with Ziyech while Roma wanted to sign him before PSG made their late swoop. More

Gallas, who spent five years at Stamford Bridge since his arrival from Marseille in 2001, is very confident about his fellow Frenchman who stood out in Ligue 1.
The former France international used to play in the same position as the West Londoners’ newest centre-back and is confident he can form a strong duo with in-form Thiago Silva.
But the 45-year-old claims Badiashile struggled in France when it came to physical challenges and will have to up his game in the Premier League.
Speaking to Genting Casino, Gallas said: “I think he can form a strong partnership with Thiago Silva.
