‘I don’t understand how it’s possible’ – Klopp jokes he needs LAWYER as he breaks silence on Chelsea’s transfer spending

JURGEN KLOPP joked he needed a LAWYER before he could comment on Chelsea’s excessive transfer spending. The Blues have paid out over £600MILLION under new billionaire owner Todd Boehly, who took charge of the club in May.

In just the winter window alone, Chelsea signed seven new players, costing £323m, including mega-deals for Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez.
Klopp has bemoaned the spending of his rivals before but remained tighter lipped as he broke his silence on Chelsea’s recent business.
He said: “I say nothing without my lawyer. I don’t understand this part of the business but it’s a big number.
“They are all really good players so congratulations. I don’t understand how it’s possible, but it’s not for me to explain how it works.”

Boehly, who replaced Roman Abramovich in a £4.25bn takeover, has signed 17 players since his arrival.
Of the seven in January was Premier League-record £107m deal for World Cup winner Fernandez.
It eclipsed the £100m Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola paid to sign Jack Grealish in 2021.
But Guardiola voiced his confusion at Chelsea’s ability to splash the cash in the market.

He said: “None of my business. It’s a surprise because it’s not a state club.
“We won 11 titles in the last five years being one of the five or six net spend teams in the league.”
Asked how people would react if City spent the same, Guardiola responded: “I know what would happen.
“What I said, being the last fifth or sixth in the Premier League being net spending, we won 11 trophies – four Premier Leagues in five years.
“What Chelsea have done is none of my business. We know what we are working to.
“What Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, United, without good players you have to spend. Now the market is wow.
“What they do is not my business. There are regulations, I don’t forget, eight or nine teams send a letter to be banned. We are the fifth team in net spend.”

And he could make his debut in tonight’s league derby against Fulham at Stamford Bridge.
But it was tough going for Todd Boehly’s men as they endured relentless hours of talks with their Benfica counterparts.
The deal even looked to be off on one or two occasions as the parties struggled to agree on the structure of payments.
And Portuguese outlet Record says Chelsea and Benfica chiefs almost got into a “physical confrontation” as a result.

    Chelsea deny the report.
It’s also reckoned Benfica wanted Mateo Kovacic included as part of the deal before accepting they couldn’t meet his £5m-a-year salary.
And the report adds a frustrated Fernandez threatened to post a video criticising Benfica’s management team unless Chelsea’s offer was accepted.
Benfica president Rui Costa certainly hasn’t held back from expressing his disdain over the manner of Fernandez’s exit.

He claims Fernandez’s attitude made it impossible for the midfielder to play again for Benfica, with the prospect of a cheaper summer deal dismissed by the player and Chelsea.
Costa declared: “I’m sad to have lost the player but I have a clear conscience that I’ve done the best for Benfica. Enzo showed no desire to stay at Benfica.
“From the moment Enzo realised he had the value of the clause, it was uncompromising.
“We insisted but the player did not show openness to continue at Benfica.
“I proposed to Chelsea that he stay until the summer for a lower sale value.
“The player, even so, did not want to continue at Benfica. And this is where everything changed.
“A player who, even with the possibility of not losing a euro and with a secure Chelsea contract, does not want to continue, could never stay at Benfica.

SunSport exclusively revealed Graham Potter took his under-performing stars to a military base last week in order to help boost team spirit and integrate the newest members of his squad.

He followed this up days later by making his debut in the Premier League against Newcastle.
Other stars such as Trevoh Chalobah, Kai Havertz and Cesar Azpilicueta were also spotted showing off their motorheads with some luxury vehicles of their own.

How Wolves nearly signed Enzo Fernandez for just £17m transfer fee less than year before Chelsea paid £107m

WOLVES nearly signed Enzo Fernandez for just £17million – just seven months before his £107m Chelsea transfer. The Argentine World Cup winner completed his British-record move from Benfica to Stamford Bridge on deadline day this week.

The Blues smashed the previous record held by Manchester City when they paid £100m for Aston Villa in 2021.
However, Fernandez could have been lining up in the Premier League from the beginning of the season – up the M40 at Molineux.
As reported by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Wolves were “very close” to landing Fernandez from River Plate in a bargain £17m transfer.
In the end, the deal did not get over the line and Benfica picked the midfielder up for an initial £9m plus add-ons – inserting a whopping £107m release clause in his contract, although savvy River Plate pocket £26.5m of that.

The 22-year-old linked up with the Portuguese giants after his boyhood club were knocked out of the Copa Libertadores and he continued his rapid rise.
But it was at the World Cup that his stock soared as Fernandez was named Young Player of the Tournament and played a key role in Argentina ending their 36-year wait to be crowned world champions.
Fernandez played every minute of the knockout rounds as Argentina beat Australia, Holland, Croatia and France.
Chelsea tried to make a move to land the exciting talent early in the January transfer window but Benfica rejected their advances.

But when the Blues went back and triggered his release clause in the final days of the window, they managed to get the deal over the line.
Fernandez will wear the No5 at Stamford Bridge after it was vacated by Jorginho, who made the switch across London to Arsenal.
And he could make his debut under the lights tomorrow night when Fulham make the short trip to the Bridge.
Relegation-threatened Wolves, meanwhile, signed Matheus Nunes and Boubacar Traore in the summer before adding Mario Lemina, Pablo Sarabia and Joao Gomes in January to bolster their midfield.
