Chelsea to rival Man Utd in race for Napoli star Victor Osimhen and could break transfer record despite splashing £606m

CHELSEA are ready to continue their spending spree with a mega-money summer move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. The Blues’ new owners believe the Nigeria international could be the final piece in a puzzle having already spent more than £600m.

And they would be prepared to break the British transfer record of £107m they have just set for Enzo Fernandez in order to land Osimhen.
The striker, 24, is set to be one of the most in-demand players in the next transfer window.
Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs also in the hunt for Osimhen, whose 14 goals in 16 Serie A games have sent Napoli to the top of the table.
The Italian giants don’t want to lose their star man but are confident of generating a high-stakes auction for a player who will have two years left on his contract in the summer.

Osimhen would fit Chelsea’s new strategy of signing young players on long-term contracts.
The Blues committed a record-breaking £323m in January alone to bring in Fernandez and £88m Mykhailo Mudryk, who are both 22, five other permanent signings in their early 20s, and Joao Felix, 23, on loan.
But Graham Potter’s team is still struggling for goals.
Despite that, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the club’s only senior central striker, was left out of the Champions League squad to make way for new arrivals.

Chelsea are reported already to have agreed a £63m deal to sign RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku in the summer, although it is yet to be formally confirmed.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher send brutal warning to Chelsea fans over £600m transfer splurge after drab Fulham draw

PUNDITS Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have issued Chelsea fans a warning after the club’s huge transfer spending spree. The Blues were held 0-0 by Fulham in their first match after recruiting £330million worth of talent in January, taking owner Todd Boehly’s overall purchases to £606million.

New faces Enzo Fernandez, Benoit Badiashile and Mykahilo Mudryk all started in the lacklustre performance, with the winger even getting hooked at half-time.
And Neville believes supporters may have to suffer watching more poor displays while their new stars settle in.
The ex-Manchester United man said: “Everything was really basic from Chelsea.
“‘I think it’s because Graham Potter hasn’t had time to work with them, he hasn’t had time to develop them. He’s going to need some time here.

“The front line needs to improve, the midfield needs to improve, so even though they’ve spent £600m I looked at every department and thought they need to get a lot better.
“I wasn’t that impressed. It’s going to take a lot of time for players to settle in.
“You can’t get away from the money. It’s jaw-dropping, staggering. £600m has been spent.
“They are going to need to be patient as nobody has done this before and it’s easy to see why it’s so difficult to put a team together.

“Chelsea and Potter have got a lot of work to do. Fulham were outstanding but Chelsea were toothless in attack.”
Neville’s concerns were echoed by Carragher, who was also left baffled as to why the club didn’t buy a marquee out-and-out striker.
Kai Havertz led the line for Chelsea and 20-year-old January addition David Datro Fofana came off the bench as Chelsea searched for a goal.
With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang seemingly out of favour, it left Carragher confused as to why another centre-forward was not signed.
He said: “The thing that leaves you scratching your head a little bit is they haven’t brought a striker in, they’ve spent 5 or 600 million.
“There’s nothing really there right now. Aubameyang’s not in the Champions League squad either, it does feel really glaring that one big position for them hasn’t been addressed.”
Chelsea sit ninth in the Premier League table and nine points off the top four places.

Fans all say same thing as Chelsea owner Todd Boehly caught on camera looking at phone while transfer flops play Fulham

FOOTBALL fans hilariously joked Chelsea owner Todd Boehly preferred to play games on his phone than watch his new-look side’s goalless draw with Fulham. The American businessman, 49, has spent a remarkable £606MILLION on new players since taking over from Roman Abramovich in May of last year.

Chelsea’s spending spree since Boehly’s takeover
Yet the Blues continue to struggle for results under manager Graham Potter, with the disappointing 0-0 against their neighbours on Friday night leaving them ninth in the Premier League.
And Boehly did himself no favours after he was caught by the Sky Sports cameras looking intently at his phone during the match.
Reacting on social media, one person said: “Boehly was playing video games and saw himself on camera then pretended to watch the game 😂😂😂”.
Another added: “Todd Boehly caught in 4K playing Call of Duty instead of watching his £620m flops”.

A third replied: “Todd Boehly caught playing Clash Of Clans at the Chelsea game 🤣🤣🤣”.
And a fourth said: “Boehly’s playing Football Manager on his phone trying to find the next five star potential winger 😭😭😭”.
January signings Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana and Noni Madueke all featured for Chelsea during the Fulham clash.

Boehly spent £276m ahead of the 2022/23 season but did not see the desired impact – which led to the sacking of Thomas Tuchel.
Following the arrival of Potter, the American owner then spent £330m in the January window, and that figure could still rise once add-ons are paid out.
Among the new arrivals was Fernandez – who broke the British transfer record in his move from Benfica.
And the Argentine, 22, impressed on his Chelsea debut as he controlled the Blues midfield.
But it was not enough to break down Fulham’s organised defensive unit.
The result leaves Chelsea nine points adrift of the top four, with a trip to West Ham next up for Boehly’s star-studded squad.
They then return to Champions League action to take on Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their last-16 tie. More

Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang took a flight to Milan
Aubameyang was completely omitted from the match day side, as Potter welcomed five January signings into the squad.
The Chelsea manager revealed it was his decision to leave the striker – who was also left out of Chelsea’s updated Champions League squad yesterday – out of the picture.
He said: “It was my decision and it was tough decision, but sometime you have to make those calls.
“Someone had to miss out. He’s done nothing wrong at all. I’m empathetic. I understand his disappointment.

I’m the ex-Chelsea star who gave Enzo Fernandez his start in football… I cried when he scored at the World Cup

ENZO FERNANDEZ took to the field for the first time in a Chelsea shirt last night and already looked like he had a point to prove. The Premier League’s record signing was the star of the show, despite his side only managing a 0-0 draw at home to Fulham.

However, the Blues may never have chosen to splash out £107m for the midfielder if it wasn’t for the work one of their former players put in.
Back in 2020, Fernandez had made just one start for River Plate and the decision was made to send him out on loan.
A small club from the outskirts of Buenos Aires called Defensa y Justicia would win the race for the future World Cup winner, thanks to a former River legend.
Defensa y Justicia play in a stadium that holds just ten thousand and had never even been in Argentina’s top flight until 2014.

But the arrival of Hernan Crespo as coach would give them a pull they’d never had before and lead the club to unprecedented success.
Against all odds, the team would win the Copa Sudamericana – South America’s version of the Europa League – with Fernandez at the heart of things.
They then also beat Brazilian giants Palmeiras in the Recopa – the Super Cup – with Fernandez scoring the decisive penalty in a shootout.
That loan would provide the platform for the midfielder to excel at River Plate before a meteoric rise which saw him join Benfica, win the World Cup and secure a Premier League record move to Chelsea in just six months.

When the Argentina star announced himself on the global stage with a wondergoal against Mexico, it was fitting that none other than Crespo would be watching in the ESPN studio.
When asked about his emotions watching Fernandez score his first national team goal, the former striker teared up.
Crespo said: “[I’m emotional] Because I know Enzo. There are things that mark you and justify the work I do today.
“To give 0.1 per cent of what is happening, because the rest is all his… everything. Everything that we were sharing.”
Asked about an interview with Enzo’s father following the goal, Crespo said: “The dad makes me emotional. Enzo makes me emotional. Because I know the work of a lot of them.
“It’s nice, you can see [what can happen] from humility, from work, from seriousness.
“He had to make a great comeback, because it’s not easy to leave the River juniors and say; ‘Well, it doesn’t matter, I’ll go to Defensa [y Justicia] and try to earn a place at Defensa.’

“Because he hasn’t been given anything, but always [he earned it], with force, always serious, always educated.
“Today, at the very least, one lives from the reflection of his players.
“And when these beautiful things happen, and especially when it has to do with the Argentine team, it’s emotional. Emotional.”
Crespo was one of Roman Abramovich’s first Chelsea signings with the Blues and had a mixed period in West London.
The Argentine notched a respectable 25 goals in 73 games, including a famous last minute opening day winner at Wigan.

Ex-Chelsea star Jody Morris to carry on legacy of England hero Glenn Hoddle as he takes over at Swindon

JODY MORRIS wants to get Swindon flying like his hero and mentor Glenn Hoddle. The new Robins boss takes charge of his first game at Newport County.
Former Chelsea star Jody Morris has began his managerial journey by taking charge at League Two club Swindon
Glenn Hoddle managed Swindon and won promotion to the Premier League
In a far-ranging exclusive interview with SunSport, Morris reveals:

How ex-England, Tottenham and Monaco midfielder Hoddle inspired him as a player and now manager.

Hoddle cut his teeth as player-boss of Swindon in 1991 and won promotion to the Premier League with the Wiltshire club in 1993 before taking over at Chelsea in the same role.
    read more foootball news
And three years later he handed Morris his debut — making him the club’s youngest-ever Premier League player, aged 17 years, 43 days.
Now former Chelsea star Morris is cutting his own managerial teeth at the County Ground.
He told SunSport: “Back in the early 1990s, even 2000s, Premier League teams never mind EFL clubs, were still lumping the ball forward.
“Glenn Hoddle was miles ahead of his time. He put Swindon on the map, not just because he was such a huge name, but the way his team played.

“It was three at the back, passing out from the back, using the keeper and not just booting the ball upfield.
“It was innovative. No-one was doing it and certainly not in the second tier of English football.
“He got Swindon promoted, leaving a legacy, and then went to Chelsea and did exactly the same thing.”
The Blues then were mid-table fodder but Hoddle changed the playing culture and laid the foundations for them to become a multiple trophy-winning machine.
Glenn Hoddle (second right) celebrates promotion play-off glory in 1993
Glenn Hoddle’s first managerial job was at Swindon
After taking Swindon into the Premier League, Glenn Hoddle took over at Chelsea and changed the playing culture of the club
Morris said: “The demands he was putting on defenders to try to pass out and not just get the ball as far away as possible was different.
“He had an idea how he wanted to play, was good at getting those ideas across and improved almost everyone who worked under him.
“For me, he was a first-class coach who always had a massive influence on me, both as a player and now a coach.
“Because he was Glenn Hoddle, he immediately had you hooked. Whenever he joined in training he was still the best player. What he could do with a ball and his intelligence with it was outstanding.
“I was just 14 when he came to Chelsea and he showed interest in me immediately. Managers back then rarely knew a youth team player’s name but he knew mine and would take time to talk to me.
“I had opportunities to play anywhere in England as a young kid and the only reason I hung around Chelsea was (a) it was my club and (b) Glenn made me believe I could make it there.
“Not many other managers would’ve given me my debut at the time I played because I was 9stone wringing wet and 5ft 5in so wasn’t physically ready.
Jody Morris (left) is the youngest-ever Chelsea player in the Premier League after Glenn Hoddle gave him his debut in 2006 against Middlesbrough
“He saw in me technical ability and knew tactically I was switched on despite being 17. I took on board the information and wouldn’t have that record as the youngest Chelsea played had it not been for him.
“His attention to detail was huge. I watched him coach central defenders and Glenn was never known for sticking his head on the ball and making tackles. But he’d improve their game.
“Then he’d then walk up to the strikers and talk about movement.
“His intention to detail and wanting to improve individuals, but at the same time hit the collective, is a talent and something I try to do myself.”
Morris coached the Chelsea Under-18s for two seasons, winning the treble and quadruple, before hooking up with old friend and Blues team-mate at Frank Lampard.
Frank and I could disagree about lots of things. But he told me, ‘I don’t want a yes man.’ Challenging each other, brings the best out in you.JODY MORRIS
They led Derby to the play-offs before taking over at Chelsea and guiding them into the fourth Champions League spot while the club were under a transfer embargo.
Morris did not follow Lampard to Everton — deciding he wanted a crack at management.
And the Swindon boss revealed how he and his old pal had a lot of disagreements.
He said: “Frank was new to coaching so a lot of the stuff translated from the grass was coming from me.
“When you’re an assistant you must adjust to whatever the manager wants.
“Frank and I could disagree about lots of things such as how long we’re training for or I wanted to do a certain bit of training that was opposed to his idea.
Frank Lampard and Jody Morris in charge at Chelsea
“Maybe we’d do shape work on a day I thought was too early. Or perhaps we’d argue about which time we should travel to an away game or team selection and formations.
“But Frank always said to me, ‘I don’t want a yes man’ and was open to other ideas. That’s why I’m bringing as my No2 Ed Brand, who I worked with at Chelsea with the under-18s. He’ll challenge and argue with me in the same way. That’s how you get the best out of yourself.”
Morris actually got his first taste of management at the end of his playing career as a caretaker after Derek McInnes left St Johnstone.
It was under McInnes where Morris really got real insight into what coaching and management was about as his club captain.
He said: “I was close to Del and was his captain. There were a lot of decisions to be made about the team and players that I was privy to.
Jody Morris sat down with our man Justin Allen at the County Ground
“I got my first insight into that and Del was really good with me. He saw potential in me as a coach and knew I wanted to be a coach and manager one day.
“And funnily enough being caretaker manager for a couple of weeks aged 32 was testament to how they saw me.”
Morris says he owes a huge debt of gratitude to former Chelsea academy director Neil Bath, who is now director of football development and operations, for developing him as a coach.
And the Swindon boss also credits his dear friend — the late great Chelsea legend Gianluca Vialli — as the other great manager he worked with.
While doing his Pro Licence Morris used the Italian as an example of a manager who seamlessly transitioned from playing to taking charge of a changing room full of his ex-team-mates.
He said: “Vialli was my favourite manager. He was a diamond fella. He was my team-mate first then manager.
“I learned a lot from him about his preparations and he was excellent with off-the ball stuff. Italians love pressing, getting after the ball and being difficult to beat.
“I spent hours with him over Zoom calls, interviewing him for my licence and tapping into his amazing football brain.”
Chelsea legend Gianluca Vialli helped Jody Morris with his pro license
But how does he take all that fantastic knowledge he gained at the top of the game to be a success managing League Two players?
He said: “You need to know what their capabilities are and sometimes it depends how true you are to yours and how quickly you want to sacrifice that.
“Teams are trying to play football at all levels. That’s a good thing for football. We don’t want to be a team who looks pretty, you want to be as much the full package as possible
“When certain things are not going well, you can rely on other attributes or other things that your team can display to give you a better chance of winning.
“I certainly have coached teams where we’ve beaten up the opposition because we couldn’t pass water that day.
“There are other days where we’ve looked magic but you are not always going to get that with players but unfortunately the lower down you go, the more inconsistent certain traits are and talents.
“You have to hone and harness the attributes you have got as a group. And try to mask up what you’re looking for.”
I end the interview by asking: “What is the ambition of Jody Morris?”
He did not even need to pause: “To get promoted with Swindon.
Jody Morris is unveiled as Swindon boss by technical director Sandro Di Michele at the County Ground
“I know memories are short in football and things can change quickly so without looking far ahead my first focus is to get the players working and playing the way I want.
“That, for me, is the best way I can get success and win.
“The club is in a promotion-challenging position so naturally that is what I want. But what you want and get can be two different things as I found out on transfer deadline day.

“I’m not going to walk into a group and say, ‘I’m going to pull up trees and we’re going to be unbeaten for the rest of the season.’
“Instead I’m saying, ‘We’re in an OK position and I’d like to be in a better one’ and if we can we have a chance to be in a better position that’s something we must aim for. More

Surprise Chelsea star is AXED from Champions League squad as three new transfers signings make list and four miss out

Chelsea’s record January transfer outlay led to them bringing in EIGHT new players in.
However, Uefa rules mean that they are only able to include three of their signings in their Champions League squad for the knockouts.
Chelsea forked out a whopping £107m upfront with a potential further £4m to follow in add-ons to Benfica for Enzo Fernandez.
And the most-expensive player in Britain has been included along with Mykhailo Mudryk and Joao Felix.

Therefore that means that fellow new boys David Datro Fofana, Noni Madueke, Andrey Santos, Gabriel Slonina and Benoit Badiashile have all missed out.
Jorginho’s deadline day exit to Arsenal did free up one place in the squad – which was only initially a 24-man one for the group stages.
But another player also had to be omitted to make room for the trio which has led to Aubameyang being left out.
However, despite his lack of match action under Graham Potter, the former Barcelona man was still expected to get the nod in favour of Hakim Ziyech.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta breaks Premier League record and overtakes Chelsea legend Jose Mourinho in the process

The Gunners started January by dropping points for just the third time this season following a goalless draw with Newcastle.
But they responded with impressive wins over Tottenham and Manchester United, the latter thanks to Eddie Nketiah’s late goal, to get back on track.
Arteta’s team now sit five points clear at the top with a game in hand on Manchester City, who they face later this month.
And the Gunners boss now has more manager of the month awards than Jose Mourinho and also former Tottenham man Mauricio Pochettino (4).
