It will be his first job in England since his largely successful five years at Tottenham.
Many Spurs fans had been praying the 51-year-old would return and fill their managerial vacancy after the sacking of Antonio Conte.
And Villa, best known for his two goals in the FA Cup Final replay of 1981, has not yet given up hope of his compatriot returning to North London.

Villa joined Tottenham from Racing Club in 1978 and would become a fan favourite at the club over his five years.
