Watch Luis Suarez sneakily pinch Antonio Rudiger’s thigh as Atletico star pulls all his old tricks in Chelsea loss

LUIS SUAREZ sneakily pinched Antonio Rudiger’s thigh as the Atletico Madrid striker pulled all his old tricks in defeat to Chelsea.
The Blues head into the last 16 second leg with a crucial away goal after veteran striker Olivier Giroud scored a stunning bicycle kick.

But for his opposite number, it was a more frustrating night, with LaLiga leaders Atletico not managing a single shot on target.
And it appeared to get on top of Suarez, who was captured pinching Rudiger, causing the German to square up to the forward.
Suarez will not only be remembered by Chelsea fans for his prolific scoring for Liverpool – but also for his bite on Branislav Ivanovic in 2013 that saw him banned for ten games.
And he was in another menacing mood against the Blues as he tried to provoke captain Cesar Azpilicueta, who was on the field with Ivanovic all those years ago.

Suarez flicked his leg out at the Spaniard but still went down looking for a free-kick.
Just moments later, he clattered into Callum Hudson-Odoi, which was adjudged as a foul.
Chelsea legend Joe Cole referenced Suarez’s infamous bite and cheeky pinch on Rudiger.
The BT Sport pundit joked: “When you’re telling off your kids and they go from biting to pinching, you’re doing alright.”

Rio Ferdinand added: “The referee is never going to see that. He’s a street fighter.”
Giroud’s acrobatic effort is all that separates the sides going into the return leg at Stamford Bridge on March 17.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said: “Fantastic result, fantastic goal. Well deserved.
“We wanted to dominate in the opponents’ half, to never lose concentration, not to do any easy mistakes and always be aware of quick counter-attacks for all their quality.

“It was a very disciplined performance – a deserved shut-out. This is the hard work, a team effort – the basis for a big win.
“We knew it [Atletico packing their defence] could happen. We told the guys if it happens maybe it’s our quality and the respect.
“I wanted them to be brave and play in their half. We knew they were ready to suffer with eight people in the box.
“The intention was to keep the intensity high. This is what we did very good. We never let them breathe or come out for counter-attacks.
“We have a big reward with this result. This is one of the toughest challenges to open a defence like Atletico.”

Roman Abramovich’s yachts, from Chelsea owner’s new £430m Solaris to one £25m boat he ‘gifted to Vladimir Putin’

ROMAN ABRAMOVICH certainly doesn’t do things in halves.
The Chelsea owner, worth a cool £10bn, is overseeing the development of his latest toy, Solaris – a superyacht that promises to be the most powerful yacht in the world.

Roman Abramovich’s new yacht Solaris is currently in developmentCredit: Carl Groll/TheYachtPhoto.com

The Russian, 54, must love travelling by sea – because he has had a private navy of yachts – with SunSport believing Solaris to be his EIGHTH over the years.
There’s even one £25million vessel he allegedly gifted to Vladimir Putin, after he was elected as Russia’s president in 2002.
    SOLARIS
The latest yacht is nearing completion and has cost £430million to build.
A 460ft beast of the sea, it features eight decks, as well as a helicopter pad.

The yacht is being built at the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany.
The shed it is being constructed in is larger than Buckingham Palace.
Solaris will have 48 cabins, accommodating up to 36 passengers, and a crew of 60.
It’ll boast two advanced engines to be the most powerful yacht in the world.

    ECLIPSE
Roman’s current superyacht, the Eclipse – with all the work that’s been done to it – is said to now be worth £1billion.
Built in 2010, it was completely rebuilt in 2015 to cater for the high-spec needs of a multi-billionaire.
Incredibly, the 553ft Eclipse has its own missile defence system – should it come under attack.
There are 24 guest cabins, two swimming pools, hot tubs, a sauna, and even a nightclub.
It also boasts a cinema, conference room, children’s playroom, hair salon, and a mini-submarine that can dive to 50m. Yes, that’s right. It’s a yacht that boasts its own submarine.

    LE GRAND BLEU
Worth £135million, Le Grand Bleu was the prize of an alleged bet between Roman and oil tycoon, Eugene Schvidler.
Eugene won and was handed the keys to this stunning 370ft vessel that has not one but TWO helipads.
Twenty guests can stay in luxury onboard, and enjoy it’s many amenities.
Astonishingly, as is the theme with these yachts, there are more boats on board.
As well as a 73-foot sailboat, guests can also enjoy taking a 68-foot powerboat for a spin. And there are two more boats in its internal garage on top of that.

    SUSSURRO
Currently available to buy for £16million, the Sussurro is now over 20 years old.
It was built by Feadship, measures over 163 feet long and boasts six luxury cabins that can house 12 guests.
Rarely used, it has been reported that the Sussorro was given to Roman’s ex-wife Irina Malandina, as part of a divorce settlement.
With 15,000 combined horsepower, it is capable of reaching speeds of 46 knots.

    ECSTASEA
Valued at around £110million, the Ecstasea is still one of the fastest superyachts around – boasting 43,000 horsepower and measuring 282-feet.
Abramovich was the original owner from 2004, before it was sold to Pakistani businessman Alshair Fiyaz in 2009.
There’s room for 14 guests, can be staffed by a crew of 25, and can be reached by helicopter, which can park on one of two helipads.
The Ecstasea suffered damage in 2019 when it clipped the Simpson Bay Bridge in the Caribbean island of St Maarten.

    PELORUS
So that’s what £270million gets you.
Built in 2003, the 377-foot long Pelorus was briefly owned by a Saudi Arabian businessman before Abramovich got his hands on it in 2004.
A year later, he lent it to Chelsea legends John Terry and Frank Lampard for two weeks as a bonus for helping the club win Roman’s first Premier League as owner.
Then in 2007 he allowed Terry and his wife Toni to enjoy their honeymoon on board.
However, it was also reportedly handed to Irina in the divorce settlement, who sold it to American film exec David Geffen in 2011.

    LUNA
Currently the second largest expedition yacht in the world, the Luna was delivered to Roman in 2010.
It boats 10 VIP cabins, that are 100 square metres each, as well as a 20-metre outdoor pool.
Like the Eclipse, it also has an anti-missile system, as well as bulletproof windows.
In 2014, it was sold to Azerbaijani billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov for £210 million.

    OLYMPIA
When you have a friend who is president of your country and reckoned to be the richest person on the planet, only a yacht will do as a present.
Which is what Roman allegedly gifted Russian president Vladimir Putin in 2002, when he was elected.
The Olympia, which has room for ten guests and is 187-feet long, is believed to be worth £25million.

The details of the transaction, which was said to have been made through an offshore company, emerged after a US Treasury official accused Putin of corruption, nepotism and embezzlement of state funds.
It was said that yacht’s maintenance and running costs were paid for from the state budget.
Abramovich’s lawyers said the claims were “unsubstantiated”, however, they did not deny that he had given him the Olympia.

Watch Chelsea fans tease Marcos Alonso with bizarre ‘don’t be slow’ chant as team arrive in Bucharest for Atletico clash

MARCOS ALONSO was treated to a curious new chant when arriving in Bucharest for Chelsea’s clash with Atletico Madrid.
The Champions League last-16 tie could see the left-back come up against the team his dad, Marcos Alonso Pena, starred for in the 1980s.

Marcos Alonso was bizarrely taunted in Romania on Monday nightCredit: Getty Images – Getty

And the Blues’ arrival at their Romanian hotel on Monday night saw the Spaniard greeted by fans.
Footage of the Chelsea squad getting off the team bus was accompanied by the chant: “Alonso be fast, don’t be slow.”
The exact origins of the chant, or the reasoning behind it, remain unclear.
Alonso, not recognised for burning pace or a major lack of speed, has become a more regular part of the team under Thomas Tuchel.

Having been exiled by Frank Lampard, the 30-year-old has featured in the last six games in all competitions.
Many expect him to start in the 8pm kick-off at Bucharest’s National Arena, ahead of Emerson Palmieri and Ben Chilwell.

Chelsea are facing Atletico in Romania due to coronavirus travel restrictions between England and Spain.
Ahead of facing the LaLiga leaders, Tuchel highlighted the physical test his players must contend with.

The German told reporters: “It’s a big test physically and mentally.
“They are a very experienced group, a very experienced club at this level, and an experienced and tough coach to play against.

Hazard would play Mario Kart five minutes before games at Chelsea before bamboozling opposition but ‘lacks ambition’

EDEN HAZARD would play Mario Kart minutes before racing past his opponents and starring for Chelsea, Filipe Luis has revealed.
The pair played together in the Brazilian’s lone season at Stamford Bridge, winning the 2014-15 Premier League under Jose Mourinho.

Hazard, 30, was on scintillating form that year with 19 goals and 13 assists for the Blues.
But left-back Luis felt that he could have been even better with a little more effort.
He told the Mail: “Eden along with Neymar are the best players I have ever played alongside – up there with Messi.
“He didn’t train well, five minutes before the game he would be playing Mario Kart in the dressing room.

“He would warm-up without tying his bootlaces up.

“But then no one could take the ball off of him. He would dribble past three or four players and win games on his own.
“Hazard has so much talent. Perhaps he lacks a little bit of ambition to say, ‘I am going to be the best player in the world’. Because he could be.”
Luis, 35, was something of a bit-part player at Chelsea and soon returned to Atletico Madrid.

The two teams face off in the Champions League last-16 on Tuesday with the LaLiga leaders in a rare sticky patch of form during an otherwise excellent campaign.
In two stays with the club, the Flamengo star won four trophies including a league title and he also picked up two honours with Chelsea.
However, being left out of the 2015 League Cup final win over Tottenham left a sour taste.

Steven Gerrard reveals all on failed Chelsea transfer and fears Rafa Benitez would take £37.5m to rebuild Liverpool

STEVEN GERRARD feared Rafa Benitez wanted to sell him to Chelsea and use the £37.5million transfer fee to rebuild Liverpool.
The Londoners made several attempts to lure Gerrard to Stamford Bridge in the 04-05 season but the midfielder eventually extended his contract with the Reds six weeks after lifting the Champions League trophy in 2005.

Steven Gerrard was linked with a switch the Blues in the 04-05 season

Gerrard has since reflected on the transfer saga and admitted he regrets toying with the idea of a switch to Stamford Bridge but was very tempted by the offer.
He told Gary Neville on Sky Sports Soccer Box in June 2020: “I regret the little bit of flirting back then and how that all blew up.
“The fact is I didn’t know whether I was coming or going with Rafa at the time. Rafa was having conversations with me like ‘I know your agent is talking to Real Madrid and Chelsea’.
“I got a paranoid feeling at the time that Rafa would have taken money to try and build Liverpool on.

“Chelsea bid £37.5m. At the time, massive amounts of dough but what would you get for that now?”
    Neville joked: “Half a Fred!”
Gerrard continued: “[Jose] Mourinho was a massive part of that. A lack of maturity on my part allowed me to think about it and flirt with that idea a bit.
“But now I have no regrets at all because Liverpool are the club I love – and that’s the way it should be.”

Gerrard went on to earn legendary status at Liverpool and has never played for any other club in Europe – he only left Reds to spend 18 months at LA Galaxy before his retirement in 2016.
Chelsea in that time won both European competitions and triumphed in the Premier League five times.
In the past, Champions League-winning boss Jurgen Klopp has said Gerrard would be the ideal candidate to replace him in the Anfield hot seat.
The Rangers chief is said to be in regular contact with Klopp and the Anfield side’s powerbrokers.
Gerrard reckons the club should honour the German with a statue having delivered their first league title for 30 years.

Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone could have been ideal for Champions League opponents Chelsea, he’s Premier League ready

WITH his black on black on black look, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone looks like he has come to the touchline straight after doing a gig with The Stranglers.
But he also disproves the claim that there are no more heroes any more – in the eyes of Atletico supporters, at least.

Diego Simeone has been a revelation as Atletico Madrid for the decade with the LaLiga sideCredit: Reuters

Twenty five years ago he was the midfield lifeblood of an Atletico team that won the league and cup double.
Towards the end of the season there was a chance that Atletico could clinch the league title on a day when they had no game, as long as other results went their way.
Simeone was the only one who did not want results to go their way. He wanted to win the league on the field, in front of the club’s fans. Nothing else would do.
During his long international career with Argentina, Simeone was not the most popular room-mate. Others preferred to switch off from football.

He wanted to watch game after game, refining his knowledge, honing his skills for the coaching career to come. And he has enjoyed an extraordinary decade in charge of Atletico.
His side have consistently punched above their weight, week after week competing with Real Madrid and Barcelona as if there was no financial chasm between them.
His team have won the league – and despite a recent wobble, are well in the race to win it again this time. They have won the cup. They have claimed two Europa League titles.
All that is missing is the Champions League – and they have reached two finals. That dream still remains.

Simeone could have been ideal for a Premier League manager’s roleCredit: Getty Images – Getty
Now they stand between Chelsea and a place in the quarter finals of this year’s Champions League. Perhaps it is a pity that he is not coaching the other side.
The fact that Diego Simeone did not play in the Premier League is surely one of football’s missed opportunities. It would surely have worked.
Simeone was in the great box-to-box tradition of the British midfield. He was versatile, dynamic, skilful and fiercely, fiercely competitive.
He would have been the type of player loved by fans of his own club- and grudgingly respected by supporters of the other teams.
And he would certainly have enjoyed the atmosphere inside English stadiums – which, especially back in the mid 90s, would have reminded him a little of his native Argentina.
And after playing for a club and building a relationship with its fans and its history, he would later be inclined to return as a coach – just as he has done with Atletico Madrid.
It could have happened. He was still only 26 at the time that England hosted the European Championship – a key moment in spreading the word that the Premier League was on the rise as an interesting destination.

As a player, Simeone was a combative box-to-box midfielder who starred for clubs including Lazio, Inter Milan, and Atletico MadridCredit: EPA

Simeone’s passion on the touchline will be evident on Tuesday when Atletico Madird take on Chelsea in the Champions LeagueCredit: Reuters

Two years earlier at Tottenham his compatriot Ossie Ardiles had spent a lot of money on glamorous strikers. It might have been better had he used his contacts to make Tottenham a stop off point for Argentine midfielders – like Simeone.
In 1997 Chelsea brought across the Uruguayan midfielder Gus Poyet from Spain. He was a success – and Simeone was cut from a similar mould and was probably an even better player.
But it did not happen. And now, on Tuesday, in his black suit, shirt and tie, Diego Simeone will be Chelsea’s implacable opponent.

Atletico Madrid suffer shock defeat to Levante ahead of crunch Champions League clash with Chelsea on Tuesday

Geoffrey Kondogbia lost the ball on the 18-yard line to allow Jose Luis Morales a shot on goal.
The veteran beat Jan Oblak with a powerful effort that arrowed in off the post, marking his 12th goal of the season.
Luis Suarez, going into the game with seven goals in his last five, hit the post from a free-kick as Atleti chased a leveller.
Simeone threw on Lyon loanee Moussa Dembele for his debut as well as Thomas Lemar, both having recovered from coronavirus.

But Levante held firm and nabbed a second goal late on through Jorge de Frutos.
With goalkeeper Oblak up for a 94th-minute corner, De Frutos intercepted a pass by his box and raced forward to the halfway line, before hitting the empty net with a long-range effort.
The defeat left Atletico’s lead atop LaLiga at just six points, having used up their games in hand and with just one win in their last four.
Los Colchoneros faced Levante twice in a week due to postponed fixtures earlier in the year, drawing 1-1 with the Valencians last Wednesday.

‘Bold’ Thomas Tuchel was wrong to haul Callum Hudson-Odoi off and youngster will be ‘fuming’ says Joe Cole

CHELSEA hero Joe Cole has described Thomas Tuchel’s decision to substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi after bringing him on as a big ‘gamble’.
The 20-year-old was introduced at half-time of Saturday’s trip to Southampton with the Blues a goal down, replacing Tammy Abraham.

Callum Hudson-Odoi was hooked by Thomas Tuchel 30 minutes into his performance against SouthamptonCredit: AFP

But Hudson-Odoi’s day lasted just 30 minutes as Tuchel took him off for Hakim Ziyech in their bid for a winner, Mason Mount having levelled from the penalty spot.
Cole told BT Sport: “It’s a very strong way to go and it’s his first spiky moment.
“We knew from [Tuchel’s] reputation that he is strong and he will make decisions and that is bold.
“Callum wasn’t having a great game, but you’re a moments player in that position.

“We watch [Lionel] Messi and he can be strolling around then give you a moment of magic. I’m not comparing him to Messi but Callum can give you a moment of magic.
“For him to say he wasn’t happy with his energy is a bold move from Tuchel and it’s a gamble. The Chelsea dressing room can be fragmented.
“I just question whether it was unnecessary to upset a player who could start on Tuesday night against Atletico. Maybe he gives the performance of his life and it’s managerial genius.
“But he’s a fantastic young player that will be fuming today. He was fuming walking off the pitch.

“I was not happy with the energy, and the attitude on counter-pressing.””We decided to take him off again because we demand a lot.”Thomas Tuchel explains his reasoning for taking off Callum Hudson-Odoi having brought him on at half-time…🎙 @lynseyhipgrave1 pic.twitter.com/gOMJo49F7a
    — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) February 20, 2021

“Tuchel’s made the decision, It might be a message to his team but it’s brave because Callum is not going to be happy with that.
“It’s bold and I’ve not seen many managers do it this early on. He wants to stamp his authority and I’m not sure it’s the right thing.
“I thought Callum could have changed the game with that one moment.”
Hudson-Odoi had been an impressive part of Chelsea’s revival under Tuchel, adding three assists and a goal under the German.
Speaking afterwards, the coach criticised the youngster’s ‘attitude’ but insisted that the episode will not hamper his chances of starting against Atletico Madrid in midweek.
Tuchel said: “We brought in Hudson but I was not happy with the energy and with the attitude in counter-pressing.

Joe Cole, who spent seven years at Chelsea as a player, questioned the decisionCredit: PA:Empics Sport

“So we decided to take him off again because we demand a lot and 100 per cent and he was not right in this shape. It’s a hard decision today, tomorrow it’s forgotten and he has possibilities to start against Atletico.”
He added: “It was hard to create chances and we needed counter-pressing to force errors for the second ball and get an easy chance.
“We had to be sharp with counter-pressing and I didn’t feel this from Callum today. I did not feel it, but I trust him.
“I sometimes take these decisions to win games. Mistakes are not a problem but we cannot lack energy.”
