Chelsea whizkid Mason Mount almost breaks Xavi’s 13-year-old playmaking record in just 45 mins for England vs San Marino

NO PLAYER in a European World Cup qualifier since Xavi has created more chances than Mason Mount did in England’s win over San Marino.Gareth Southgate handed the Chelsea star the central playmaking role in the 5-0 win on Thursday.

And Mount took advantage of the minnows’ inevitable inability to control the Three Lions’ attacks, creating eight chances in open play.
Not since Barcelona legend Xavi’s nine-chance performance against Bosnia and Herzegovina for Spain back in 2008 had a single player created more in a match at this level.
What’s more, 22-year-old Mount came within touching distance of the record before being taken off at half-time.
As defined by Opta, all four of his crosses met their men and were statistically deemed ‘good’ balls in.
The midfielder also provided one assist at Wembley, winning the ball deep in San Marino territory and playing in Raheem Sterling for his goal.
While fans may have been hoping for more than the five-goal rout, the statistics do underline England’s very attacking display.
Behind Mount, Ben Chilwell and first goalscorer James Ward-Prowse each created five chances in open play.
A whopping 32 shots were fired off, 24 of which came inside the San Marino box to force ten saves from impressive goalkeeper Elia Benedettini.

Jesse Lingard was unable to hit the back of the net from his ten efforts with Sterling notching once from seven.
Three Lions boss Southgate praised Mount for his first-half display ahead of Sunday’s trip to Albania.
He said: “Mason Mount in the first half was excellent and set the tone.
“It was good to see Jesse Lingard looking like he’s enjoying his football again. There were a lot of good things.
“There were lots of good individual performances. The midfield players moved the ball around really well.”

ITV pundit Roy Keane was also effusive in his praise, and said of Mount: “He’s an outstanding player, he’s proven it week-in, week-out.

“There were question marks, people were quick to criticise him, but I can’t talk highly enough of him.
“I think he seems a really good pro, he affects the game, he’s got a goal in him, he seems an honest pro, the most important thing for any manager is to have options.
“Gareth is a lucky manager, he’s got great options.”

Chelsea star Reece and Man Utd’s Lauren James become first brother and sister to play for England and are ‘living dream’

IN the case of the James clan, it’s very much about keeping it in the family.Last year, Reece and Lauren James made history when they became the first brother and sister to play for England.

It’s astounding that two talented footballers of the men’s and women’s game are even playing professionally, not to mention pulling on a Three Lions shirt and representing their country.
But the London-born pair are living the dream. Part of their success is due to their incredible father, Nigel.
A motorbike accident halted his promising career, after spells at Luton Town and Southampton.
Nigel found his true calling through mentoring youngsters and later set up Nigel James Elite Coaching programme.
It’s testament to him, his son and his daughter would eventually become pros.
    PARKLIFE
Reece, 21, and Lauren, 19, grew up in London with football an ongoing backdrop in their lives.
As well as a father with footballing aspirations, their elder brother Joshua was on the books of Fulham and Reading. Their mother Emma worked admirably for the NHS.
If the three siblings weren’t kicking a ball against a wall, they would be down the park honing their skills.
Often, their dad who would pass on his knowledge and put the three through training drills and exercises.
Lauren and Reece have always shared a tight bond together
The siblings grew up in London with football as their backdrop
Dad Nigel coached Reece, Lauren and their brother Joshua in the local park
“We grew up as a three,” Reece of Chelsea proudly told the Blues official website.
“Obviously, Josh learned from my dad and then it just passed its way down. I started playing because my brother played, and my sister played because I played.
“We all used to play every day together at the park and over time we all gradually got better. There was a field behind my house, with two pitches, and every day I’d be playing football, either in the field or in the street.”
Lauren, a striker for Manchester United, echoes the sentiment that the beautiful game dominated their lives.
“All I ever knew was football, football and football,” she told The Telegraph.
“My brothers got me into football. Whether it was when Josh was at Fulham or when Reece was at the Chelsea academy, I was there kicking the ball against the fence.
“I’ve always had a football and it has just taken me to where I am now.”
    PATHWAY TO SUCCESS
Reece was an early bloomer when it came to his footballing talent.
By the age of six he joined Chelsea’s impressive development academy, where he progressed through the ranks.

However, it took him some time to find his best position. He started off as a striker, moved into midfield and then had to learn the art of defending.
Once he cemented the right-back as his own, there was no stopping him. In the 2017-18 season, he appeared for England at U18, U19 and U20 level.
A loan at Wigan Athletic the following campaign saw Reece named as their Player of the Year.
Once he made his debut against Grimsby in the EFL Cup in 2019, scoring one and assisting two, he could no longer be ignored for a first team spot.
Lauren might be slightly younger than Reece, but her achievements are just as impressive.
At 13 she joined Arsenal, and because of her experience with playing with her brothers was encouraged to train with the boys’ team.
Two years later, the prolific forward made her first team debut for the Gunners women’s team – beating Reece to the punch there.
She created history in the process becoming the youngest player in Arsenal’s history male or female to make their bow for the club.
In 2017, she moved to the newly reformed Manchester United women’s team to take on a new challenge in a city she never knew.

Since joining the Red Devils, James has thrived scoring 27 goals in 54 gamesCredit: Getty
But that didn’t deter the brave teen, who scored 14 goals in 18 league games as the Red Devils won promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking to the Women’s Super League.
    BATTLING RACISM TOGETHER
As is a sad indictment of our times, both Reece and Lauren have been targeted with online racist abuse.
They are united in their efforts to encourage social media companies to do more with their platforms in stopping racism.
“When we both get messages like that, we turn to each other and discuss it,” Reece said.
“I think everyone agrees and knows that what’s happening with social media and racism is wrong. Everyone says they want to change, but not many things are changing.”
    MUTUAL RESPECT
Although they share a competitive nature on the pitch, Reece and Lauren only have a mutual respect for each other’s achievements.
But Lauren knew she had to emulate her brother by following his footsteps into the England squad.
“We are not usually competitive,” she revealed.
“When he got his senior England call-up, it was like, “Right, he got his, I’ve got to get mine now. That’s probably the only time and I laugh about it now.”
Reece earned his first cap against Wales last October, while a month later Lauren received a senior national team call-up as part of a 29-player training camp at St George’s Park.
Despite their careers mirroring one another, Reece is adamant they can’t be compared.

    “I wouldn’t say there’s competition,” he said.
“You know, she is my sister. Our games are the same, our professions are the same, but it’s still different. I play men’s football when she plays women’s football, you can’t compare them.”
No. But you can applaud their success. They are, after all, living the dream.

Chelsea leave Porto legend ‘disgusted’ after claims players celebrated drawing Portuguese side in Champions League

Thomas Tuchel has warned his stars against complacency when the teams meet next month, but Porto legend Paulo Futre learned of a different reaction.
The 55-year-old claimed the Premier League side already thought they had qualified for the next round after the draw, and has called on his old team to ‘sweat blood’ to win the tie.
He told Portugal’s CMTV, via Record: “It’s in the English press and I called later to confirm. Porto players have to run like never before in these two games.
“They think they have already won the tie. They celebrated!
“When I spoke to the person who told me, I was disgusted and would give anything to play against Chelsea.
“Porto’s players have to die on the pitch, [Chelsea] think they are already in the semi-finals.

Porto can qualify, but they have to sweat blood.Paulo Futre
“They celebrated in the morning when they saw that Porto were drawn against them. [Porto] can qualify, but they have to sweat blood.”
Futre knows what it takes to go all the way in the competition, having won the European Cup with the Portuguese giants in 1987.
The former winger also won two Primeira Liga titles in his three years with the club.
Despite Futre’s claims, Chelsea figures have been keen to distance themselves from the favourites tag ahead of the tie.
Boss Tuchel said: “Clearly many people will maybe now make us the favourites against Porto.
“That will not help us. You can ask in Turin what the opinion about this is, and if helps to be favourites.

“But we are self-confident, and that is strongly connected with our performances.”
Ex-goalkeeper Petr Cech, now Chelsea’s performance adviser, added: “It’s an opponent we need to respect.
“They have history in the Champions League and European Cup. It’s a team we will be prepared for and ready to play against.”

The Foxes’ 3-1 win in that tie earned a match-up with Southampton in the next round.
And City will be the ‘away’ side as they face Chelsea, with both games taking place at Wembley.
The semi-finals are due to take place behind closed doors on the weekend of April 17.
Both Chelsea and City were tested en route to 2-0 wins in the quarters.
An Oliver Norwood own goal helped the Blues beat Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge, before Hakim Ziyech’s late strike sealed the win.
And Everton held out until the 84th minute before an Ilkay Gundogan header sent Pep Guardiola’s men into the final four.

Kevin De Bruyne hit a second on the break to ensure their fourth trip to the semis in five years.
Southampton booked their first trip to Wembley since 2018 by beating Bournemouth 3-0 on Saturday.

Nathan Redmond scored twice after a Moussa Djenepo opener at the Vitality Stadium.

Chelsea player ratings: Gilmour stakes his claim, Chilwell back to form but Giroud looks lost up front

CHELSEA made nine changes for their FA Cup clash against Sheffield United – and it showed as they scraped into the FA Cup semi-finals.An Ollie Norwood own-goal and a late Hakim Ziyech strike at the death proved to be enough for Thomas Tuchel’s side in a disjointed and lethargic show.

Sheffield United showed good heart and fight – especially coming only one game after their 5-0 thrashing by Leicester.
Here, SunSport’s Simon Phillips rates how Chelsea’s players starred in their 2-0 FA Cup triumph.
    Kepa Arrizabalaga – 7.5
He was very quiet and rarely called upon albeit a few long-range tame efforts.
That was until the second half when United threatened a bit more and the Spaniard made a few good saves.
    Andrea Christensen – 8
Looked just as comfortable at right centre-back as he has done in the middle of the back three and continued his fine form.

    Kurt Zouma – 8
Solid at the back and he was very good at controlling passing out from deep. Always talking and organising the backline and didn’t put a foot wrong.
    Emerson – 6.5
Looked a bit rusty and uncomfortable with the ball at his feet at times, but largely he did his job well and what he needed to do as he grew into the game.
Sheffield United were unlucky to go a goal down after Ollie Norwood prodded past his own keeperCredit: Getty
    Callum Hudson-Odoi – 6
A good threat out wide, often beating his man to find enough space to deliver a good cross.
It was exactly this that made Chelsea’s first half goal from a resulting corner. Second half he appeared to lose his touch a bit and was poor.
    Billy Gilmour – 8
Like a player who’s been playing at the top level for 15 years, he controlled Chelsea’s play alongside Kovacic and showed once again what a top-class all-round midfielder he is.
Billy Gilmour defied his tender age in the middle of the parkCredit: EPA
    Mateo Kovacic – 8
As always, very neat and tidy on the ball and controlled the middle park for Chelsea.
A few nice long diagonal passes to find Hudson-Odoi out wide, and great at driving forward with the ball.
    Ben Chilwell – 8
He looked much better today after a few poorer games.
It was his shot that Chelsea got their first half goal from and he was very tidy on the ball always looking to be progressive.
    Mason Mount – 6
The Chelsea captain today looked a bit easy to knock off the ball one too many times, and it wasn’t his best performance as of late.
Olivier Giroud had a poor game leading the lineCredit: Reuters
    Christian Pulisic – 6
Not a great game for him really, although he was the victim of a lot of fouls from the Sheffield United players and no protection from the referee.
But he missed a one-on-one chance to score, and his overall contribution was poor despite getting much better in the second half.
    Olivier Giroud – 5
He was very quiet in the first half and it was easy to forget that he was even on the pitch. Unsurprisingly he was subbed off just after 60 minutes.
    Subs
    Cesar Azpilicueta (replaced Christensen, 63) – 5
Was supposed to sure up the back line but he was a little uneased under pressure.
    Reece James (replaced Giroud, 63) – 6
Was put in for his physicality and tried to make the difference.
    Kai Havertz (replaced Hudson-Odoi, 72) – n/a
    Hakim Ziyech (replaced Gilmour, 72) – n/a
    N’Golo Kante (replaced Pulisic, 83) – n/a

Jorginho in subtle dig at ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard for ‘long ball’ tactics and hails change under Thomas Tuchel

CHELSEA midfielder Jorginho has appeared to fire a shot at previous manager Frank Lampard’s ‘long ball’ tactics. The Italy international is enjoying life under Thomas Tuchel, with the new boss STILL unbeaten since replacing Lampard at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are unbeaten in 13 games since the German took over, with Tuchel employing a possession-based game.
Chelsea are also into the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they will take on Porto.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Jorginho says he is ‘enjoying’ the style of football.
He is usually paired in the middle of the park with Mateo Kovacic or N’Golo Kante.
The 29-year-old said: “The coach wants us having control of the game, playing from behind, even when the pressure comes.
“So, for me, it’s a good way to play football that I like and enjoy, and I think it’s better for my characteristics than playing long balls, and second balls.
“When it’s Kova [Mateo Kovacic], his style is to play short, to come, so I know if he wants to play one-two or when he wants some space to move forward and to dribble.
“So, I just try to help him, either give him the space, or come over to help him and give him an option – whatever he needs to get out of the situation.

“With Kante, it’s kind of the same. When you play with your mates, you need to understand each other, and understand their characteristics as well. So, I know that Kante has big power, so I tell him when he can turn.
“With Kante, it’s more about talking: ‘Turn!’ ‘Man on!’ or talking so he knows I’m there for the short pass. So, I just try to give him an option to do a one-two and get out.
“Oh yes, big brains [Kante and Kovacic have big brains]. They have more legs than me, though!”
Lampard had come under increasing pressure after a horror start to the Premier League season.
Chelsea sat way down in ninth place at the midway point in the 2020-21 campaign, despite a £228.7million summer splurge.
And that shocking run saw Lampard, 42, given the boot – with assistant manager Jody Morris also leaving the club.

Thomas Tuchel admits he ‘didn’t know much’ about Chelsea talent Tino Anjorin but he’s ‘very impressed’ by teen star

CHELSEA manager Thomas Tuchel admitted he ‘didn’t know much’ about Tino Anjorin – but is now ‘very impressed’ with the teenager. The playmaker was given his first-team debut by ex-boss Frank Lampard last season, and has since played four more times.

But when Lampard was replaced by Tuchel in January, the German was in the dark about rising 19-year-old star Anjorin.
The England Under-19s international, who can play out wide or centrally, has featured in Chelsea’s opening two FA Cup games.
And Tuchel revealed he declined sending him out on loan as he wants Anjorin to develop under his guidance.
He said: “I got to know Tino. I didn’t know much of him. I was very impressed because he’s very physical player.
“Tall guy, strong guy. He has the ability to keep the ball under pressure because he has the body for it.
“He has the physical ability to play and train with us on this level. He had some minutes with Barnsley in the cup game.
“We decided to keep him to get to know him better, not to send him out on loan.
“I’m happy about that. He is very strong in finishing. Very nice character. Nice guy from the academy.

“Very humble. Totally focused. Totally clear when you talk to him. Very self-aware.”
Anjorin has three goals in eight U23 games this season, and recently sat on Chelsea’s bench as they beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
He has watched as fellow academy products Mason Mount, Reece James, Tammy Abraham, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Billy Gilmour were all integrated into the first-team.
And with Chelsea playing Sheffield United in the FA Cup quarter-finals in their first game after the international break, Anjorin will be hoping for more minuets.

Chelsea ‘promise’ to break bank for £130m Erling Haaland transfer if Tuchel qualifies for Champions League next season

CHELSEA have ‘promised’ to break the bank for £130million man Erling Haaland if Thomas Tuchel qualifies for Champions League, reports say.The Borussia Dortmund forward has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in the world, with 31 goals in 30 games so far.

It has attracted attention from from Europe’s elite, with Chelsea and Real Madrid among those heavily linked.
Haaland is advised by super-agent Mino Raiola, who has admitted before that only ten clubs can afford the striker, four of which are from England.
According to journalist Xavier Bosch of Mundo Deportivo, the 20-year-old will ‘choose his future with Raiola’s permission’.
It is claimed Dortmund are willing to sell Haaland next summer, but only for £130m.
And it could then be down to whichever team fronts the most cash, leaving Chelsea and Real Madrid favourites over Manchester United and Barcelona.
It is said that Blues bosses have given their word to manager Tuchel that they will fund a move for Haaland, but only if they qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Dortmund are open to selling the lethal finisher because he has a release clause in 2022, allowing him to leave for just £65m.
Timo Werner is currently leading the line for Chelsea after his £47.5m move from RB Leipzig last year.

But despite promising performances, he has only found the net ten times this season.
It has seen his future at Stamford Bridge come under questions, with rumours he could even be used in a deal to prize Haaland to West London.
But manager Tuchel was quick to shut down those suggestions as nothing more than speculation.
He said: “In the moment I don’t see why he should be frustrated. We gave him a little time to breathe against Leeds.
“But right now, I don’t see why he should be too frustrated. And honestly, nobody here is blaming the strikers.
“This is a team effort to attack and defend, but we expect our guys to create more chances, to be more decisive because we expect the defenders to play on the highest level and so we also expect that of our strikers.
“And then maybe all the stuff you read will disappear.”
