Danny Drinkwater wants Chelsea return despite ‘frustrating’ Blues spell and says he has fallen out of love with football

DANNY DRINKWATER is still hoping for one last chance at Chelsea while he rebuilds his career out on loan.On loan at Turkish club Kasimpasa, the 31-year-old says he is still searching for the love of the game that he felt so strongly when winning the Premier League title with Leicester.

The midfielder joined Chelsea a year after that fairytale achievement but the £35million switch has not gone to plan.
And Drinkwater has described his time at Stamford Bridge as ‘frustrating’.
He told Sada Elbalad’s Elmatch Program: “It was a big price tag at the time but I felt it was exciting.
“It was a new change, I felt I could play and show my worth. I just think it was a lack of chances.
“My time at Chelsea has been nothing but frustrating.
“It is a weird position that I am in. It is definitely different but I don’t think I am the first, nor will I be the last. This is part of football.”
Drinkwater only made 23 appearances for Chelsea, almost all of which came under Antonio Conte in an injury-hit debut season.
While he enjoyed a ‘great relationship’ with Maurizio Sarri, the signing of Jorginho meant he was told to find a new club on deadline day.

There were days where I got frustrated at the whole situation, things started to happen off the pitch that shouldn’t have.Danny Drinkwater
The player recalled: “[Sarri] gave me one hour of the window.
“He said, ‘I think you’re gonna get frustrated’, he explained and was honest, which was great.
“But I had one hour to find a club because I wasn’t willing to go abroad. I’d just had a son, I wanted to be close to my son.
“And I didn’t want to be part of the loan structure, it was a lot of mixed feelings. So I decided to stay, I was baffled.
“There were days where I got frustrated at the whole situation, things started to happen off the pitch that shouldn’t have.”
Quiet loan spells at Burnley and Aston Villa were followed by a switch to Kasimpasa, where Drinkwater has made seven appearances.
A return to Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea in the summer is not out the question for Drinkwater, who still has a year left on his contract, but he accepts that it is a ‘long’ way off.
Asked if he can get back in the Blues team, he noted: “I would like to think so.

“I don’t know if it is a good idea to go back to Chelsea and start declaring these things. I have got a long way to go.
“I have to try and start enjoying my football again because in this moment it has disappeared.
“I keep working hard, I keep grafting and I am doing the right things at the right times and I need to stay injury free and see where it takes me.
“It is a short career so I need to keep doing the right things and hope things turn around.”

Chelsea coach Neil Bath is the man behind Blues’ youth academy, and has developed £500 million worth of amazing talent

IN 2004, after 12 years with the club, Chelsea named Neil Bath as their academy director.Little did anyone know at that time, if you fast-forward 17 years, the fruits of his labours would be dominating the football landscape in England and overseas.

When the die-hard Blues fan, now 55, was installed in his new position he set about completely restructuring the West Londoner’s youth programme – with a greater emphasis on procuring and developing the best talent in London and the South-East.
In the last year, the likes of Porto slayer Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi have been testament to his work – heralding a new dawn in the Chelsea first team of talented youngsters.
While another Bath protege, Andreas Christensen made his 100th appearance in a Chelsea shirt in the FA Cup fifth round tie against Barnsley – the first academy graduate since John Terry to achieve that feat.
And just as impressive are the ones who the club let go, including Declan Rice, Nathan Ake, Ryan Bertrand, Tariq Lamptey and more.
German website Transfermarkt, which offers conservative transfer values of players, crunched the numbers.

However, taking into account Hudson-Odoi was subject to a £70million bid from Bayern Munich in 2020, the transfer fees could be at least double those suggested figures.
All in all, through the years, SunSport believes Bath has remarkably overseen the development – on and off the pitch – of around £500million worth of football talent.

    ‘AN INSPIRATION’

In 2020, Bath, now head of youth development, was recipient of the Eamonn Dolan award in recognition of his excellent work in youth development for Chelsea.
His former students queued up to pay their tributes to the man who moulded them into the players they are today for a clip on Chelsea TV.

Mason Mount was one of the many graduates who shared his gratitude for his former coach. “I have nothing but praise to say about Neil,” he said.
“He’s an inspiration to us all – all the academy players coming through.
“I started in the academy when I was six-years-old and he helped me so much.
“The way the academy is set up, the way we work, when we’re younger it puts us in the right mould to push us and keep getting better and better.
“The winning mentality that he brings, it shows in every game we try to play and try to win, and it shows in the youth academy with how many trophies we’ve won.”
While Tammy Abraham revealed his days working with Bath were the “best years of his life”.
“He’s shown so much belief in the young lads and myself, and that’s what drew me to Chelsea,” he divulged.

‘What they are doing at the academy is an amazing job, there’s nothing like it.
“Them years I had in the academy were probably the best years of my life.”
    15 YEARS IN THE MAKING
From the offset, Bath, who began working for Chelsea in 1992 as a part-time schoolboys’ coach, focused on developing Premier League talent, once a significant investment was made into the academy.
In the exciting revamp, the club relocated its youth and first-team training facilities from Harlington to Cobham.
As he put it on Chelsea’s website back in 2019, it was a plan that was 15 years in the making.
“It’s what we’ve been working towards for 15 years since we restructured the Academy in 2004,” he said.
“We’ve always been very clear that our job is not really to win youth trophies year after year, but to develop and produce Chelsea and Premier League players.”
Bath added: “We have to set our ambitions high because we want to be the best football academy in the world and the number one choice for players and parents.”

    PROOF IS IN THE WINNING
Turning rough diamonds into winners is, perhaps, the hardest thing to do in youth football.
But since 2010, Chelsea have proved their academy to be, if not the best, one of the most successful in world football.
They’ve won the FA Youth Cup an astonishing seven times during that period, including five in a row from 2014 – equalling the record of the infamous Busby Babes of Manchester United that stood for 50 years.
Their U18s have been national champions twice and southern champions four times.

While on the European stage, the kids have won the Uefa Youth League twice.
But it’s not all about making first class footballers. Developing the boy into a respectful and educated man is also part of the process.
Bath has spoken in the past how he and his assistant Jim Fraser understand the importance of that.
“We’re currently the reigning Premier League champions from Under-13 to U16, which is a really positive sign,” he said in 2019, “and we’ve just achieved our best-ever GCSE results.

“We need to make sure these boys have all the characteristics and attributes, as footballers and as young men, to follow the likes of Ruben, Mason, Fikayo and Tammy.
“When first-team coaching staff speak so highly about them as people, how they are humble and respectful, how they work so hard every day and set the standards in training, that’s also incredibly nice to hear and reinforces the culture we have built.”
    THE ONES THAT GOT AWAY
Of course, not every young player is going to make it – that is the harsh reality of football.
For every Mount, Loftus-Cheek, Abraham or Christensen there’s a Declan Rice, Eddie Nketiah, Tariq Lamptey and Nathan Ake that had to prove their worth elsewhere, and who would now command huge transfer fees.
But perhaps the biggest star who slipped through the net was Kylian Mbappe.
In 2012, the French superstar, then 13, was invited for a trial to Cobham. However, when he was asked to return for another trial, his mum refused point black.
Daniel Boga, who worked as an international scout at Chelsea until 2014, explained to Goal: “He took a trial and didn’t end up convincing us because he didn’t offer enough defensively.
“So, they asked his mother if he could come back for a second trial and she said no.”
Mbappe was playing at a small club in the suburbs of Paris called Bondy at that time, and his mum Fayza believed he was destined for the top.
Kylian Mbappe was on trial at Chelsea, but didn’t impress Blues coaches

“My son will not go back, either they sign him now or within five years they’ll have to offer 50 million euros to tie him down,” she said as per Boga.
The reason for Chelsea’s reluctance to sign Mbappe on the spot was that they didn’t see enough quality in him when he wasn’t with the ball.

“Defensively, he wasn’t quite there,” Boga said.
“When he received the ball he was incredible, but without the ball he didn’t do much.”
It goes to show, you have to do more to impress Bath and his team to get your chance to learn at this fame academy.

How Chelsea could line-up with Aguero and Haaland in attack and ‘better Paul Pogba’ Ryan Gravenberch in midfield

CHELSEA are set for another big summer of spending and several top players are linked with the Premier League side.Erling Haaland, Sergio Aguero and Jose Gimenez represent just a portion of the talent reportedly being targeted in West London.

The latest name to enter the Blues’ radar is Ryan Gravenberch, who has been described as ‘better’ than World Cup winner Paul Pogba.
Reports in Italy name the midfielder as another star being sought after by several clubs.
Liverpool, Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester United are all said to be monitoring Gravenberch, along with Chelsea.
Despite being just 18, he has racked up over 50 appearances for Ajax.
Bidding would have to start at around £30million, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, and the Dutchman is under contract to 2023.
Gravenberch joins Borussia Dortmund striker Haaland in being linked with a Stamford Bridge switch.

Chelsea are thought to be in the running for a £150m summer deal.
Thomas Tuchel may choose to reinforce his frontline for next season having admitted that Kai Havertz and Timo Werner were disappointments in Wednesday’s win over Porto.
One forward certainly available is soon-to-be free agent Sergio Aguero.
Reports suggest the Argentine is ‘tempted’ by the Blues in his quest to break the Prem goal record.

And a defender is also said to be highly sought after with Jose Gimenez on a long list of targets in that department.
Any new signing would have to fit into Tuchel’s trusted 3-4-2-1 system.
It is hard to see how Haaland and Aguero would play in the same XI, potentially making the Manchester City legend a super sub if both joined.
Gravenberch could settle into a midfield role alongside Mateo Kovacic or N’Golo Kante, with Gimenez completing the German’s three-man defence.

Tuchel urged to DROP out-of-form Chelsea striker Timo Werner after Champions League win over Porto

THOMAS TUCHEL has been told to consider dropping Timo Werner after a lacklustre display against Porto. The German has only scored past Morecambe and Newcastle in 2021 and rarely looked like doing so on Wednesday night.
Timo Werner failed to hit the back of the net against Porto on WednesdayCredit: Getty
When he was substituted for Christian Pulisic on 65 minutes, Werner had only fired off one shot and touched the ball 15 times – the lowest of all 22 starting players in Seville.
Speaking after the game, former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison asserted that Tuchel needs to take him out of the line-up to reset his form.
He told BBC 5 Live: “Chelsea have got other attacking options – it just depends on how long Tuchel wants to stick with Timo Werner.
“Listen, Werner is not a bad player. You don’t become a bad player overnight.
“It’s just at the moment, he’s getting into positions and not being clinical.
“Maybe he needs a bit of time out of the team and he can make an impact coming off the bench.”
A fine Mason Mount goal put Chelsea ahead in the quarter-final tie before Ben Chilwell added a second late on.
But Werner’s struggle left pundits searching for answers over how he can go from being a goal machine at RB Leipzig to a nigh-on flop at Chelsea.

He came with a huge reputation and you cannot always expect it to be a bed of roses immediately.Rio Ferdinand
Ex-Blues hero Glenn Hoddle told BT Sport: “You’ve got to remember this is in a pandemic, we don’t know if he’s settled at home, I’m not sure if his family are with him.
“It’s a bit like [Kai] Havertz as well, if you haven’t got your partner, or just your partner, you’re not going out with the lads, getting to know them, for a meal, all those things have an impact on you as a player – so that could be a part of it.
“But he does lack a little bit of confidence at the moment.”
Rio Ferdinand added that the 25-year-old was likely to find it tough to match his form in the Bundesliga.
The former defender noted: “He came with a big reputation from Germany, did ever so well, scored over 30 goals in his last season for Leipzig.
“He came with a huge reputation and when they come from a foreign country, you cannot always expect it to be a bed of roses immediately.
“He’s got 10 goals this season and eight assists.”
Tuchel admitted that Werner and fellow forward Havertz did not meet his expectations against Porto.

He told reporters: “I accept that it was a tough match for Timo and for Kai today, they did not have their best day and we did not deliver so good.
“The connection between the deep seven players that we needed for the build-up and the front three, we lost that a bit.
“To have a bit more of an impact, the balls we delivered were not the best balls.
“I could feel our two German players up front, Kai and Timo, did not play on their highest level today so I wanted to have an impact from the bench.”

Mason Mount insists his goal was better than pal Ben Chilwell’s as Chelsea heroes celebrate strikes in win over Porto

Mount said: “It was about time for my goal to come, I’ve been waiting patiently.
“I was very happy with that and it puts us in a good position. But it’s only half the tie.
“I’m always working on my finishing. It’s a part of my game I can keep improving and score more goals.”
Mount also became the Blues’ youngest-ever scorer in the tournament’s knockout stage at 22 years and 87 days.
And with Chilwell, Chelsea had two English stars on target in a Champions League match for the first time since Frank Lampard and John Terry struck against Napoli in March 2012.
Provided there is no collapse next week in the ‘home tie’, then Chelsea will reach a first Champions League semi for seven years.
Asked to compare the quality of both goals and the finishing, cheeky Mount said: “I’ve got to go with mine as the better.
“Of course, he would say his one. He showed great composure. I thought he was going to shoot in front of goal but then he took it past the goalkeeper.

“It was a very good finish from him. He will be buzzing. I am happy for him to get his first goal.”
It was just the type of response manager Thomas Tuchel had demanded after Saturday’s shock 5-2 home defeat to West Brom — and the following day’s training-ground bust-up between Antonio Rudiger and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
That shock Premier League loss to Sam Allardyce’s side was the first defeat of his reign after 14 matches unbeaten.
Mount, who has eight goals this season, added: “We put the West Brom game behind us. We said we need to improve.
“That game was something we looked at briefly the next day and then moved on.
“We came here with full focus, 100 per cent commitment that we would win and give it our everything. I felt we did that.
“The job is not done. They will fight for the next leg and we have to give it our all again. We will be ready next week.”

Tuchel praised his young creative midfielder, saying: “Mason is a very important player for our squad.
“He has the right mentality and attitude towards training. He has the right attitude towards success.
“He has both feet on the ground. He is open and hungry to learn.”
Victory also meant Tuchel became only the second Chelsea boss to win his first three Champions League knockout matches after Roberto Di Matteo in 2012.
That, of course, was the year the Londoners won Europe’s biggest crown and interestingly they beat a Portuguese side in the final eight as well.
If they prevail, then they will play either Real Madrid or Liverpool in the final four though the La Liga side have a healthy 3-1 lead from the first leg.
The German said: “I feel there is a good atmosphere in the dressing room.

“We are happy but not too happy. We are excited but not overexcited.
“After conceding last Saturday and losing such a strange game, we said that the best situation would be produce a clean sheet straightaway.
“This makes it a very precious result. I am very happy we had a lot of possession.
“It was the first response after our first loss together and I am absolutely happy with the result.
“I can understand that we feel the tension when it comes a quarter-final.

Antonio Rudiger shows right sort of fight with commanding performance as Chelsea battle to crucial ‘away’ win vs Porto

BY NOW, everyone should know the first rule of Fight Club. You do not talk about Fight Club.
Antonio Rudiger had a commanding performance against PortoCredit: Getty
Well, the Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel broke that particular code on the eve of this Champions League quarter-final clash.
Confirmation from the German coach that there had indeed been a training-ground scrap between Kepa Arrizabalaga and Antonio Rudiger must have sent shivers down the spines of the most blue-nosed of fans.
Some might have justifiably questioned the strength of morale within the squad following such a serious confrontation – especially as the pair had to be separated by onlookers.
Yet if anything it does show there are real fighting qualities within Tuchel’s troops.
Indeed those battling attributes were transferred on to the pitch last night with Chelsea heading into next week’s ‘home’ tie with a clean sheet and a real chance of making a first Champions League semi-final for seven years.
While Kepa was once again warming his hands on the bench, German defender Rudiger came back into the starting XI and produced a commanding display at centre-back.
Bruising Berliner Rudiger missed the West Brom debacle at the weekend when his teammates shipped FIVE goals against the Premier League basement strugglers.
But in place of Brazilian Thiago Silva, the 28-year-old excelled once more at the back, keeping an astonishing 13th clean sheet in his past 16 club appearances. Excellent reward for the cramp he felt at the end.

FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN SIGN UP OFFERS HERE

Okay just don’t mention his most recent result with Germany…
It wasn’t an entirely faultless display and on 51 minutes Rudiger was more than grateful for the Mendy save from Marega when he was caught napping in defence.
But Rudiger showed he can smack a ball hard with real venom – notably on the hour mark when his 30-yard drive stung the hands of the Porto goalkeeper Marchesin.
This was exactly the reaction Tuchel would have wanted individually and collectively after watching his unbeaten record smashed to pieces by nuisance Sam Allardyce.
Particularly against intense, highline Porto pressing, which put Chelsea on the back foot for long periods in the first half.
Elsewhere in the Chelsea defence it was a good night all-round for the main protagonists with hopes of interntional travel this summer.
Certainly it would be fascinating to know the thoughts of Trent Alexander-Arnold if he had been watching this. Probably from behind his sofa.
As if TAA did not already have enough to worry about these past few weeks.
Antonio Rudiger and Porto’s MaregaCredit: Rex
First the Liverpool full-back was snubbed by an unconvinced England boss Gareth Southgate following an underperforming campaign.
Next he had a horror show on Tuesday night at Real Madrid, his blunder gifting the La Liga giants the second goal in a 3-1 first-leg mauling.
And now this display from his rival for the Three Lions jersey, Reece James, who ensured that the reputation of English right-backs would not suffer another Spanish inquisition.
Playing on the right-hand side of a 3-4-3, James was a constant threat, making insightful runs, drawing the Porto left-back out of position, delivering from the corners and defending strongly at the pivotal moments.
It was a real shift and as he showed with a robust challenge on 65 minutes, there is a physical presence to his game, too.
In the race to secure a spot in Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad, there is suddenly an abundance of talent down the flanks.
Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier might argue otherwise but James will fancy his chances of wearing the England jersey this summer.
It is another battle to watch with great interest.

Chelsea verdict: Tuchel’s Blues show their mettle as they grind out big win vs Porto after shocking West Brom collapse

ALMOST 80 minutes on the clock in Seville and Thomas Tuchel did something that surprised the majority of Chelsea fans. With the game finely balanced, the German brought on veteran defender Thiago Silva and World Cup-winning defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante.
Chelsea celebrate their 2-0 win over PortoCredit: Getty
His side were 1-0 up with ten minutes to go against a very good Porto – but Tuchel knew exactly what he was doing.
He wanted to add experience and steel to his team, to see the game out and get back to the home leg with a lead, an away goal and clean sheet in tact.
It was a pragmatic approach from the Chelsea boss, who had the 5-2 defeat to West Brom in the back of his mind from the weekend.
He knew just how important a clean sheet would be after such a match, especially if it was in the quarter final of the Champions League.
Tuchel knew that the players might be shaky after such a heavy defeat to relegation battling West Brom.
He set his team up to win the match, but they had to grind out the result.
In fact, they ended up getting two away goals after a late one from Ben Chilwell.
It was a fantastic result and not the type of performance we’ve come to associate with Chelsea and a Tuchel team.

These are the kind of performances – and the kind of results – that win you trophies.
You simply cannot boss every game, and Tuchel knew Wednesday night was all about the result and all about keeping a clean sheet regardless.
Porto are a very good team and looked the team that were up for winning the most, they looked like they wanted it more as they setup with a high and intense press, showing energy and physicality.
Chelsea could have easily folded again after the weekend’s shocking performance and result.
But they dug in and they fought to an essential victory that they will now feel will give them enough to go through to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Tuchel has proven to be an adaptive manager who will rotate his players and use his whole squad, and he certainly did that this evening to ensure that his side came out on top in terms of the result.
We won’t see too many games where Tuchel and Chelsea will come out second best in terms of performance, but best in terms of result – but in Seville it was definitely one of those.

Chelsea player ratings: Mount and Chilwell do the business for Blues as Havertz and Werner fail to fire against Porto

CHELSEA take two vital away goals into their second leg against Porto after Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell did the business for the Blues. Edouard Mendy also did brilliantly to keep a clean sheet – but German pair Timo Werner and Kai Havertz again failed to fire.
Chelsea beat Porto 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-finalCredit: AFP
Chelsea bounced back confidently after being beaten under manager Thomas Tuchel for the first time.
And here’s how Simon Phillips rated Tuchel’s performers.
    Edouard Mendy – 9/10
Was called upon too many times for Chelsea’s liking but pulled off a number of great saves.
Also, very comfortable with the ball at his feet once again.
    Cesar Azpilicueta – 7
The captain was under immense pressure from an intense high press but he largely did his job well.
Some important last gasp interceptions and blocks from him.
Edouard Mendy pulled off a number of great savesCredit: AP
    Andreas Christensen – 7
He looked phased after an early telling off from Thomas Tuchel for a misplaced long-ball, and he didn’t really try another one after that.
Made some very good blocks at the back and defended well.
    Antonio Rudiger – 7
He wasn’t hassled as much as the other two centre-backs but his pace and leadership was needed far too often.
Reece James offered much needed physicality to Chelsea’s team that generally lacked itCredit: AFP
    Reece James – 9
He offered much needed physicality to Chelsea’s team that generally lacked it.
Some nice moves down the right and he was always in space, links up very well with Mount and defended impressively.
    Jorginho – 6
Found Mount well for the opening goal, but he lacks a real presence in that was missing for Chelsea against a fast and physical side.

    Mateo Kovacic – 6
He always seemed to have two players on him, with Porto knowing him to be Chelsea’s possession keeper in the middle of the park.
    Ben Chilwell – 9
An impressive game for the England international who played with a lot more confidence.
Good moving forward and good at the back as well. He scored a superb goal late on after an excellent solo run.

    Mason Mount – 8
Took his goal beautifully to put Chelsea 1-0 up with a silky turn and perfectly placed finish.
    Timo Werner – 4
I forgot that he was on the pitch through large parts of the match he was so quiet.
He barely touched the ball in the first half and was rightly taken off midway into the second.

    Kai Havertz – 4
Didn’t really look on it tonight and was often physically losing out to the Porto defenders, not protecting the ball well enough and having a heavy touch too often.
