Ex-Prem ref explains why VAR didn’t look at Youri Tielemans’ winner vs Chelsea despite Perez handball

VAR didn’t check Leicester ace Ayoze Perez’s handball in the FA Cup Final because it didn’t occur “immediately” before Youri Tielemans’ screamer The Foxes won their first ever FA Cup on Saturday after beating Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley thanks to Tielemans’ sensational winner.

However, the star midfielder’s stunner was met with some controversy as the ball hit Perez’s hand, via his knee, when he tried to intercept a Reece James pass in the build-up.
Luke Thomas then picked up the ball and fed the Belgium international who launched an unstoppable 30-yard shot, which gave Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga absolutely no chance.
A number of Blues players implored referee Michael Oliver to check the incident on VAR and a raft of fans echoed the same sentiments on social media.
However, former Premier League referee Peter Walton explained that the supposed offence didn’t create Tielemans’ goalscoring opportunity and thus didn’t fall under VAR’s jurisdiction.
Walton also claimed that Leicester ace Perez didn’t break any rules as the ball came off his knee first.

He told BT Sport: “It’s a subjective viewpoint whether or not it was handball.
“Personally, I don’t think it was a handball, the ball has deflected off Perez’s knee and just caught his arm.
“That in itself people may argue is handball, I don’t think it was.

“However, VAR would not have got involved in that incident because the actual goalscoring opportunity didn’t occur immediately when there was a potential handball.
“There was seven seconds or so between that potential handball and the ball hitting the back of the net.
“That’s not immediately and the law states it’s only an offence if the goalscoring opportunity happens immediately, so good use of VAR.”

Watch Leicester fans celebrate in pub as VAR comes to rescue and disallows Ben Chilwell’s dramatic late equaliser

LEICESTER fans partied into the night after Chelsea’s equaliser, through their former hero Ben Chilwell, was disallowed for offside by VAR in the FA Cup Final. The Foxes beat the Blues 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday, marking their first ever FA Cup trophy, thanks to Youri Tielemans’ second-half screamer.

The west Londoners thought they had equalised after 89 minutes when old King Power favourite Chilwell reached in a delicious long ball by Thiago Silva and saw the ball deflecting between Caglar Soyuncu as well as Wes Morgan.
Chilwell passionately celebrated the goal against his former team and didn’t hold back before the returning crowd at Wembley.
However, VAR had a look and noticed that the left-back was marginally offside and overruled the initial call.
A number of Leicester fans were filmed celebrating the decision with all their heart at a pub as some of them even climbed up the tables.
These scenes made for an unusual situation as not many fans have celebrated a non-goal like this before.

But that is the impact VAR has had in English football ever since its introduction two years ago.
Many Leicester fans also took to Twitter after the whistle to celebrate their historic achievement.
Some decided to poke fun at Chilwell, who got booed by his former supporters at Wembley.
One fan wrote: “Match ticket £57, train ticket £35, Ben Chilwell knee sliding and punching his badge for it to be ruled out for offside, priceless.”
Another tweeted: “Ben Chilwell has to stand there watching the players he thought he was better than get a FA Cup winners medal hahaha.”
While a Chelsea fan wrote: “For me the high of seeing Ben Chilwell get the equaliser and then seeing it chalked off a minute later because his big toe is slightly ahead is shattering.
“Always hated VAR and this is beyond a joke.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel didn’t seem to be questioning VAR’s decision to overrule Chilwell’s goal.
But Tuchel believed the help of technology should have been used after Tielemans’ stunner as it appeared like the ball hit Ayoze Perez’s hand in the build-up.
The Chelsea manager said: “I’m not an expert in handball any more, I don’t know when it’s handball or not.
“I don’t know any more when they need to punish it or it’s OK to play with the hand.
“In the second half we controlled the match even higher, and we conceded a goal out of nothing, a fantastic goal, but a lucky goal of course.
“And then we have a big chance with Mason [Mount], a fantastic save from [Kasper] Schmeichel, and offside goal, that was very, very close.”

Watch Chelsea disbelief as VAR disallows late equaliser to hand Leicester the FA Cup in dramatic Wembley scenes

CHELSEA were denied an equaliser in the final moments of Saturday’s FA Cup final after VAR spotted an incredibly tight offside call. The Foxes led 1-0 after a Youri Tielemans screamer at Wembley, which itself had to be checked for a potential infringement.

VAR judged Ben Chilwell to be millimetres offsideCredit: BT Sport
But Chelsea appeared to have denied them a first-ever FA Cup crown with the help of some penalty-area pinball.
Ben Chilwell was picked out on the left flank and bombed into the area, picking out cross at the far-post.
Leicester’s Caglar Soyuncu cleared the ball – only for it to ping into the net as Wes Morgan rushed back alongside the tumbling Chilwell.
The Blues defender celebrated a mad 89th-minute equaliser which was then ruled out in equally stunning scenes.
VAR checked Chilwell against Soyuncu for a potential offside and judged the Chelsea man to be millimetres offside.
Referee Michael Oliver then called back the play, sparking huge celebrations from the Leicester fans at Wembley.

The despair was clear on Chelsea faces and Thomas Tuchel’s team failed to muster a fresh response as the game drifted away.
And the final whistle sent Foxes fans into raptures with a crowd of 21,000 allowed into Wembley.
Leicester supporters had witnessed four FA Cup final defeats before the club’s first triumph on Saturday.
I don’t know what is handball now or not. So I can’t comment and give my opinion and I don’t know why it’s okay.Thomas Tuchel
Speaking after the 1-0 defeat, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel rued the disallowed strike alongside a Mason Mount effort that had been well saved by Kasper Schmeichel moments earlier.
He said: “We conceded a goal from nothing. It’s a fantastic goal and a lucky goal.
“We have a chance from Mason, an offside goal that was very close. We were unlucky today.”

On Leicester’s goal, the German claimed that Ayoze Perez may have committed a foul in the build-up and criticised the handball law.
He said: “I didn’t see it. My assistant saw it on the screen on the bench and the players said it straight away that is was a handball.
“It’s the second time; there was a handball against Arsenal and VAR didn’t intervene.
“Today Leicester scored a goal but I’m not an expert in handball. I don’t know what is handball or not now. So I can’t comment and give my opinion and I don’t know why it’s okay.”

Chelsea hero Michael Essien tips Blues to win Prem title next season and wants Brendan Rodgers after Thomas Tuchel

CHELSEA are the favourites to win next season’s Premier League title following Thomas Tuchel’s rapid start at the club, says Michael Essien. The former Blues midfielder, 38, won two league winners’ medals at Stamford Bridge and believes Tuchel can collect one of his own.

Michael Essien knows what it takes to bring success to Stamford BridgeCredit: Splash News
Since taking over in late January, the 47-year-old German has guided Chelsea to the FA Cup and Champions League semi-finals.
And Essien reckons a full-on tilt at the title is next on the agenda despite Manchester City’s dominance in 2020-21.
The Ghanaian told Ladbrokes: “I’m going to say Chelsea win the league next season, based on how good they’ve looked since Thomas Tuchel has taken over.
“They’re my first choice for the title, then it’s obviously going to be Man United, Liverpool and Man City who will be right up there with them.
“With the players Thomas Tuchel has got at his disposal, I think he’s got all the tools needed to challenge for the title next season.
“If you look from the goalkeepers to the forwards, they’ve got big names all over the pitch. They’ve got it all.
“I love the fact that they’ve got Thiago Silva at the back, his experience really is vital to that team and he’s such a great name the younger players in the squad can learn from.
“In terms of where else they could realistically strengthen – I’m not sure, because it’s very difficult to go out and find a quality striker available in the market.

“Plus, I really like Timo Werner, I actually think he’s done very well, particularly in recent weeks. He’s so tricky to keep up with so if he can start adding goals to his game next season I don’t think it’s an area Chelsea will need to look at strengthening.
“Even without scoring goals, he’s still contributing so much to the team, giving assists to his teammates and playing a vital role in winning games.
“But as a striker, especially at that price, when you’re not scoring, people tend not to look at anything else that you do other than your goal ratio.”
Chelsea managers do not tend to have a long shelf life and the club will need to be prepared for whenever the Tuchel era comes to an end.
For Essien, Leicester boss and former Blues backroom member Brendan Rodgers is an ideal candidate to one day take charge at Stamford Bridge.
He continued: “I know Brendan Rodgers from our time at Chelsea – it would be great if he could come back and manage the team.
Brendan Rodgers has been backed to one day return to Chelsea as managerCredit: EPA

“I’m not the one to decide these things but it would be great to see him in the dugout for Chelsea.
“He did very well at Liverpool and was so close to winning the title. It didn’t happen, so he went and won a lot of trophies with Celtic.
“He’s since returned to the Premier League, where he’s taken Leicester to a different level. If I could see him one day at Chelsea, it would be amazing.”

Thomas Tuchel claims ‘amazing’ Chelsea predecessor Frank Lampard ‘laid the foundations’ of his success with Blues

THOMAS TUCHEL has paid tribute to Frank Lampard for ‘laying the foundations’ for his successful start to life at Chelsea.Less than six months into the job, the German has already secured a pair of major cup finals for the Blues and a top-four finish is well within his grasp.

Tuchel took over from Lampard in late January with the club ninth in the Premier League, five points off a Champions League place.
But the Blues’ midfield legend had finished fourth last season despite a transfer ban, while bedding in an number of young players.
And Lampard was credited by his successor with the groundwork that has led to a strong end to the campaign.
Tuchel told reporters: “Frank had an amazing record in the group stage of the Champions League, won all the FA Cup games.
“He’s laid the foundation to get us to finals and we don’t feel ashamed or have any fear to say that out loud. It felt like that on the first day.
“I am aware Frank created his own legacy as a player and made it bigger as a coach.

“We stepped in halfway through the season and tried to fulfil the job he had begun.”
The pair spoke couple of days after Lampard was replaced by the ex-Paris Saint-Germain boss, sending a message which Tuchel also praised.
He added: “Frank resembles everything you think about Chelsea.
“You think about Frank Lampard, the way he is, how he played football… This shows his character and the message he sent was a pleasure to receive.”
Chelsea face Arsenal on Wednesday night knowing a win will put them on the verge of a guaranteed top-four finish.
Tuchel has demanded his stars maintain their effort levels in the fixture despite the weekend’s FA Cup final sitting on the horizon, as well the Champions League showdown with Manchester City.

The coach stated: “We are in the middle of the race for top four, we have two finals to come and you can only achieve it if you are on a consistently high level mentally and physically, with a good atmosphere, and this is what we try to keep now.
“Nobody is allowed now to drop one per cent, because that’s what makes it special right now.
“But now is not finished. It is not the time for praise, not the time for reflection, it is the time to continue and finish the job.”

Inside Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel’s unique coaching methods that have led Blues to FA Cup and Champions League finals

FORGET ground control, Major Thom is more interested in ball control.Chelsea’s militant boss Thomas Tuchel, 47, has only been with the Blues since late January, but already he’s got his players marching to the sound of his beat.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has transformed the Blues with his unique training methodsCredit: Getty
The German has led the Premier League giants to both FA Cup and Champions League finals, and the club sit pretty in the top four.
Tuchel’s coaching methods that showcase his forward-thinking talents have improved his charges physically, technically and mentally.
And even a Carlsberg ad has aided Chelsea’s season.
    BALL CONTROL
In his early training sessions, the ex-PSG manager was keen to see his new players’ technique and control of the ball.
Something he implemented from his early days in the Bundesliga, Tuchel had Mason Mount and Co playing with a size 1 Nike ball during a drill.
Tuchel’s reasoning behind it is that playing with a smaller ball improves a players’ first touch and makes passing more accurate.
Later on in those sessions, the regular size 5 ball was reintroduced – but coaches brought in smaller goals to make finishing harder.
Under Tuchel, Chelsea have moved the ball much faster in the final third – which can be credited to this coaching drill.

    GOALKEEPER TRAINING
While many goalkeeping coaches around the world insist on sharpening reflexes or improving footwork, at Chelsea things are a little different.
Tuchel wants his goalies to be dominant in his box and demands they are a physical presence.
Luckily for him, Edouard Mendy stands at 6ft 6in and is already an intimidating sight for opposition forwards.
But, to bulk him and Kepa Arrizabalaga up, a rucking shield as used by rugby stars has been introduced.
As the keepers jump in the air to claim catches, coach Petr Cech is on hand to shove a rucking shield into their bodies.
There is method in the madness with the goalkeepers improving their physicality and becoming able to deal with obstacles, especially from set pieces, in congested penalty areas.

    MIND GAMES
While Tuchel wants his players to be perfect technically and physically, psychology has also played a part in Chelsea’s astonishing run.
They’ve become harder to beat and are much more resilient than under previous coach Frank Lampard.
In the 30 games before his arrival this season, Chelsea conceded 27 goals. In the 24 games since, they’ve conceded just 11 – and the stat would be much better if it wasn’t for their freak 5-2 loss to West Brom.
He’s also installed a mentality in his players that they shouldn’t fear anyone. How has he done it? With the help of a Carlsberg ad.
Recently, Tuchel brought his players into Cobham for, what they thought, was a video analysis talk.
Instead, they were surprised to see an advert featuring a cinema packed full of Hell’s Angels made ten years ago by the Danish beer giants.
Chelsea stars exchanged quizzical looks as they watched a series of couples enter the cinema to be confronted by the unsettling audience, with only two seats available right in the middle of the bikers.
Some turned away immediately, visibly put off from taking a seat in among the 148-strong menacing audience, who were all staring at them as they walked into the auditorium.
A Carlsberg ad featuring intimidating Hell’s Angels bikers has inspired Chelsea’s stars mentally
In the ad, a fearless couple sit next to the bikers and are cheered by them

But those who did take their seats were greeted with cheers, applause and a bottle of the drink – as the advert-makers proved a point of showing how people should not be frightened of situations.
Tuchel also made a point of telling his players they needed to be brave – and not scared of any situation or team who confronts them.
    OPPOSITION TRICKS
Even mathematical genius Alan Turing wouldn’t be able to crack this German’s code.
As we reported, Tuchel has come up with a clever ‘secret’ trick to fool Chelsea’s opponents during games.
He tells players to use code words when they attack, so that his men know where to run when they are going forward — and who to aim for.
It is a system that includes a group of these key ‘triggers’ to let Blues stars know what side they will go down, whether the ball is put in high or low and even if it is long or short.
One baffled rival told SunSport: “You have no idea what’s going on but they know exactly what they are doing.
Tuchel has taught his players a special code to communicate with each other on the pitchCredit: Getty
Chelsea’s stars can baffle the opposition when they talk with one another on the pitchCredit: Rex

“It just makes the attacks quicker and more deadly because sometimes a guy passing does not even have to look up to know where the runner will be.
“They use different words all the time too, so you can’t even work it out during the game.”
    AN INNOVATOR
In the past, Tuchel has continued to invigorate his stars with innovative training methods designed to improve them as players.
In Germany, his unique approach was famous among those who worked under him.
At Borussia Dortmund, he would get his side to play on pitches with no width or no depth.
Tuchel’s unique methods on the training pitch are famousCredit: Getty

Often, he forced players to take extra touches with their knees or made defenders carry tennis balls to stop them grabbing other players’ shirts.
And when he wanted more centralised attacks, he cut the corners off the training pitch to make the final third into a triangle.
You might call his methods bizarre, but they’re certainly getting results. And you won’t see any Chelsea fans complaining if they end the season victorious.
