John Terry’s father was furious he snubbed Man Utd for Chelsea and refused to join him on pitch as he signed first deal

JOHN TERRY once revealed his dad was so furious he snubbed Manchester United for Chelsea that he refused to join him on the pitch as he signed his first contract.Terry, who had been playing for West Ham at youth level up until the age of 14, had the choice of joining the Blues, United or Arsenal.

But after falling in love with Chelsea, the legendary defender defied his dad’s wishes and refused a United contract.
Now Aston Villa assistant manager Terry told the Footballer’s Guide to Football podcast in June 2020: “My dad never wanted me to sign for Chelsea.
“Actually, on the pitch of me signing my schoolboy form at the club, my dad refused to go on the pitch with me.
“I’m in the tunnel, the players are coming off the pitch and I’m waiting in the tunnel, Glenn Hoddle goes past and my dad’s going, ‘You’re not signing for this football club, we should sign for Man United’.
“Again, me being me at the time I’m going, ‘I’m 100 per cent I’m signing here, if you don’t come out with me I’m going out to sign’.
“And you needed a parent, so my mum said she would come and sign it with me, my dad’s going mad at my mum, ‘No you wont’.
My dad never wanted me to sign for Chelsea. Actually, on the pitch of me signing my schoolboy form at the club, my dad refused to go on the pitch with me.John Terry
“There’s a picture of my mum and Graham Rix signing my contract, but my dad refused and absolutely kicked off that night. Again, me being the character I was, I knew Chelsea was right for me.
“One night that was probably supposed to be one of the best nights of my life turned out to be a tough one for a young 14-year-old to be honest.”
Terry’s instinct to sign for Chelsea paid off, as he went on to win five Premier League titles and FA Cup’s as well as lifting the Champions League in 2012 before leaving the club in 2017.
But the legendary centre-back revealed he did come close to joining rivals United, and even visited the club several times over a year with David Beckham.
Terry said: “I actually went up to Man United for a year, so I was kind of travelling up in school holidays, I went up with David Beckham when he signed his first pro contract.
“We went up in the car together, I was there on a two-week training camp.

“I went up, stayed up for a couple weeks every school holiday really on my own, which was tough to be fair, being away from home.
“Then I had the option between Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United and to be fair all of them went above and beyond.
“The moment I walked into Chelsea, it just felt right, I know that’s going to sound really bizarre.”

Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Season Tino Livramento is pacy attacking full-back, who has captained England youth team

MASON Mount, Reece James, Billy Gilmour and now Tino Livramento. All of these exciting young stars are recipients of Chelsea Academy Player of the Year Award, with the latter crowned this year’s winner for some outstanding displays for Chelsea’s U23 team.

18-year-old Livramento is a pacy full-back, in the mould of Cafu, who is earning rave reviews from the coaching staff in Cobham.
A regular in the Andy Myers’ U23 team, the attacking defender has also impressed first team boss Thomas Tuchel, who named the Croydon-born youngster on the bench against Arsenal and Manchester City.
And it is fully expected that he will push Cesar Azpilicueta and Reece James for a starting berth next term.
    BLUE SINCE A BOY
The South Londoner has been with the Blues since he was just eight years old and has risen steadily through the ranks.
But it’s during this campaign Livramento has really stood out at right wing-back for the development squad.
Despite only turning 18 in November, the speedster has appeared 20 times in the Premier League 2.
His gallops forward have also led to six assists and two goals.
And he’s certainly competitive, with four yellow cards and one red to his name already.

    EARNED A PROMOTION
Back in January, Livramento was promoted to first team training before an FA Cup tie against Morecambe when Frank Lampard was boss.
But new manager Thomas Tuchel didn’t want to stand in the way of the exciting talent’s progress.
The German has continued Lampard’s philosophy of giving kids the experience of mingling with the senior stars.
In terms of playing time, his game might be best-suited for Tuchel’s 3-4-3 system with a pushed-up high right wing-back.

THE FANS ARE CALLING FOR HIM
With Chelsea still not mathematically sure of a top-four finish for Champions League football next season, it seems unlikely that Livramento will appear for the Blues in their final game away at Aston Villa.
But that hasn’t stopped Chelsea’s supporters from begging Tuchel to give him his bow.
Having been on the bench against both Arsenal and Manchester City, he could find himself involved in the matchday squad.
And because of his physicality and pace, he certainly won’t look out of place on the pitch.
    CAPTAIN IN THE MAKING?
Chelsea are famous for grooming future captains at the club – just think John Terry.
And in Livramento, they could have another leader in the ranks.

The England youth star, who has appeared for the Three Lions at U16 level all the way through to U19, has captained his country.
Given his meteoric rise, could we see Tino leading his club at Stamford Bridge?
    Don’t best against it.

He told the Daily Telegraph: “What I wake up with every day is: ‘I want to work again’.
“I love the idea of trying to improve individuals or a squad. I’ve become addicted to that.
“The minute I stepped into Derby to this minute now, it’s something I feel compelled to do. I want to manage a huge club again and I want to manage it to success.”
Asked if he would ever return as Chelsea boss like Jose Mourinho did, Lampard replied: “Everyone knows how I feel about Chelsea and that will never change.
“But there may be other opportunities along the way.”
Lampard admits he was blown away by owner Roman Abramovich making a rare public statement to praise him when he was booted out.
He added: “I loved that. I could never sit here and say I have anything but appreciation for what he did for my career.
“I was disappointed, I felt we could change things. Your pride takes a hit.

And he is likely to go up against Chelsea team-mate Chilwell, should the left-back also be selected, as England play Scotland on June 18.
With Ryan Jack and Kenny McLean out, Clarke welcomed the 19-year-old into the fold having previously turned out for the Under-21s.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has recently turned to the midfielder to bulk out his squad in the busy run-in.
Gilmour impressed in recent wins over Fulham and Manchester City, and has made 11 appearances this season.
Joining him in the Scotland Euros squad is the uncapped duo of David Turnbull of Celtic and Rangers’ Nathan Patterson.
Liam Cooper also won his battle to make the cut with no place for Liam Palmer, Oli McBurnie, Leigh Griffiths, Lawrence Shankland or Andrew Considine.
Former striker Ally McCoist had backed Rangers teenager Patterson to join PFAS Young Player of the Year Turnbull and Gilmour in the squad.
He told Sky Sports ahead of the announcement: “The ones that would spring to mind immediately would be Turnbull, Patterson and Gilmour, to be honest with you.

Chelsea launch £80MILLION bid for Man Utd target Jadon Sancho with Thomas Tuchel huge admirer of Borussia Dortmund star

The 21-year-old is set to quit Borussia Dortmund this summer and has his heart set on a return to the Premier League.
Sancho was eyed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side last year but his £117m price tag proved too high.
SunSport understands Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is a huge fan of the Three Lions wideman.
The German wants to focus on having a strong finish to the season before eyeing transfers.
But Stamford Bridge chiefs are then expected to make a serious move for the former Manchester City academy kid.
Sancho is a boyhood Blues fan and it is believed he wants a return to the UK to be closer to family and friends.
The London-born ace hopes to be in England’s Euros squad.
Dortmund are banking on him having a good tournament to push his transfer fee up to around the £100m mark.

Chelsea 2 Leicester 1: Jorginho penalty proves decisive in Champions League race despite late Kelechi Iheanacho strike

MOST Hollywood sequels are pale imitations of the originals and quickly forgotten.Jaws, Grease, Basic Instinct, The Karate Kid.

But Chelsea v Leicester II: The Hunt For Champions League Football bucked the trend, with the rematch proving even more blockbusting.
Most remakes are about revenge, too, and Chelsea stuck to the script as they banished the disappointment of losing to City in Saturday’s FA Cup final with a feisty victory.
And it is a win that means they have snatched their Champions League destiny back into their own hands in stormy circumstances.
As it did at the weekend at Wembley, VAR played a massive part in making sure there was a twist in the tale, like every good movie.
After having two goals ruled out by the remote control referees and a decent penalty shout waved away, Timo Werner and Chelsea ended up moving up into third place in the table thanks to the disputed technology which is overshadowing football every week now.
The 10,000 Chelsea supporters allowed inside Stamford Bridge had been voicing their four-letter displeasure at VAR and ref Mike Dean when things were not going their way.
They fell silent when the man miles away in Stockley Park, Andre Marriner, spotted Wesley Fofana trip Werner just inside the Leicester area with 66 minutes gone.
Toni Rudiger opened the scoring after a cornerCredit: Reuters
The centre-back celebrates opening the scoringCredit: Getty

From nowhere came a penalty to Chelsea and up stepped Jorginho to coolly slot the ball home, make it 2-0 and put his team in the driving seat.
The goal which should have settled Chelsea nerves came less than 20 minutes after they went ahead with another VAR incident — this time Leicester striker Jamie Vardy inadvertently heading on a corner for Antonio Rudiger to bundle home.
Victory means Chelsea will be guaranteed a place in the Champions League next season if they beat Aston Villa away on Sunday.
That is no easy task but at least they are not relying on slip-ups elsewhere or having to beat Manchester City in the Champions League final on Saturday week to ensure re-entry to the competition.
Leicester were under the cosh for most of last night and now have Liverpool breathing down their necks in the battle for fourth place.
They have the FA Cup under their belts but modern football being what it is, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel would probably trade defeat at Wembley last weekend in favour of playing in the top tournament next season.
As usual with Chelsea it was not easy going. Werner is turning into the most bizarre goal threat as his first season in English football draws to a close.
Jorginho cooly slotted home from the spotCredit: EPA
Jorginho is joined in celebration after doubling the leadCredit: Reuters
He was caught offside yet again last night, 19 minutes in when he put the ball in the net only to have it disallowed because he cannot time a run properly.
Chuck in his handball goal and his part in the spot-kick shows you a trier who is at least involved in everything his team has a go at.
Werner was given a rousing send off by the fans when he was replaced with five minutes to go. There is a distinct feeling that given siome polish he will come good eventually.
After a humdinger of a game which took the story from the weekend on in terms of drama, there is also plenty to come from these two teams in the future.
Boss Tuchel was working in front of supporters for the first time since taking over Chelsea in January and their presence only heightened his animation and antics on the sidelines.
When Ben Chilwell shot wide after only four minutes he spun on his heels with his fists clenched, grimacing and shouting to the heavens.
Sure it was a good shot but it didn’t require that response.
Kelechi Iheanacho pulled one back for LeicesterCredit: Getty
Kelechi Iheanacho was quick to try and restart the gameCredit: Reuters
A few minutes later he was at it again, delivering a full volume sermon to his subs spread across the lower tier seating behind him.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, Willy Caballero, Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud looked on in wonderment at their barmy boss.
City now must hope maximum points in their final game against Spurs on Sunday and hope that Liverpool do not win and score more goals than them or else it’s the Europa League.
A team like this does not deserve that. Having hung on for so long this season they deserve to be among the elite next term.
Incidentally, Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal for Leicester makes him the first player in Premier League history to have scored on all seven days of the week.
With games like this it would be great if Chelsea could play Leicester every week.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel warns his stars he’s not afraid to swing axe amid Tammy Abraham snub in FA Cup defeat

THOMAS TUCHEL vowed to carry on axing big names and warned his Chelsea stars: You ain’t seen nothing yet.The Blues boss has rung the changes since taking over in January — including ten in his last two line-ups.

Striker Tammy Abraham is the latest to feel the wrath of Tuchel after being left out of the last two squads — including the 1-0 FA Cup final defeat to Leicester at Wembley.
Abraham’s girlfriend, Leah Monroe, was so annoyed she even blasted Tuchel on social media.
Monroe posted: “How on earth do you make the decision to leave your top goal scorer out of the squad for a final?
“The same person who even scored the goals to actually qualify for this competition? It’s not making any sense whatsoever.”
But ahead of their top-four crunch clash with the Foxes tonight and the Champions League final on May 29, Tuchel said: “It is never personal.
“I have to select 18 players for a squad. We have Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Olivier Giroud who can all play as No 9, so I decided not to add another.
“And when Mateo Kovacic and Andreas Christensen come back I need to figure out the squad and even eliminate two more players.
“This is the worst thing for me. I understand this frustration. But this is not the moment to complain and for me to explain.
