The sad story of ex-Chelsea wonderkid Per Weihrauch, who was forced to retire and was later found dead at just 32

PER Weihrauch should have been heralded as one of the world’s best players in the game today. The talented Dane had the world at his feet and starred at youth level for Ajax and Chelsea.

Aged 32, Weihrauch was found dead at his home last year
However, he had his career cruelly robbed from him through injury.
At 19, Weihrauch was told by a specialist that he should forget about a career in football and accept an insurance payout.
Try as he might, the winger didn’t give up on his dream and returned to Denmark, where he played on a part-time basic.
But it was never enough to get back to the level he had promised.
Last year, aged just 32, Weihrauch was found dead at his home. This is his tragic story.
    LOCAL TALENT
As a teen, Per was one of the leading lights of his generation.
He was coached by Brentford boss Thomas Frank and his assistant manager Brian Riemer at local club Hvidovre IF.
Riemer told The Athletic: “Per had the full package.
“He liked to come inside from the wing position in a 4-3-3, but he could also play as a striker.
At 17, Weihrauch was considered as one of the best young in Europe
Brian Riemer, left, and Thomas Frank worked with Weihrauch when he was a promising talent in DenmarkCredit: PA
“Good physique, intelligent, great shooting ability, great first touch, good in the box, great heading ability.
“He was one of those players who could create something for a team-mate or do it on his own. He was a fantastic talent.”
It wasn’t long before the Europe’s top clubs registered an interest. Atletico Madrid, Ajax, Chelsea, Manchester United and more were desperate to sign him to their academies.
    A NEW EXPERIENCE
To continue his football education, Per went to Ajax – famed for bringing the best young Danish players through, including Jan Molby, Soren Lerby and Christian Eriksen.
But it ended up being somewhat of a nightmare for the wonderkid, who struggled to settle.
He then got what appeared to be a fairly normal hamstring injury on tour, but under pressure to show his ability he played on and made it worse.
“What I miss the most are friends and family,” Weihrauch told Danish newspaper Lokalavisen – hinting about his loneliness in Amsterdam.
“After training here, you can’t just go home to see one of the boys.
“Of course it’s hard sometimes, especially when you’re injured. Then it’s boring to sit down here alone.
“You’re here to play football — and that’s the only thing you can’t do when you’re injured. Then the days can get long inside a gym.
“But every day I get up and I look forward to going to training, so it was the right decision (to join Ajax).”
Injuries took their toll, though. With his contract expiring, it looked unlikely it would be renewed by the Dutch club.
    ‘COME TO CHELSEA’
In 2006, fellow Dane Frank Arnesen, who knew Per from his time at Ajax, brought Weihrauch to Cobham.
It was there he impressed Brendan Rodgers – Chelsea’s then-youth coach.
“I remember Per so clearly,” Rodgers revealed.
“He was a very, very talented young player right out of the Ajax mould. He was a winger, but he was strong physically.
“He could play in a number of positions, he could play wide on either side or he could play as a striker or a No 10. He was very gifted on the ball, fast.
    Weihrauch joined Chelsea at 17
Brendan Rodgers called Weihrauch a big talentCredit: Getty – Contributor
“He came in at 17 and he was already above the youth team. He went straight into our reserves and you could absolutely see his undoubted natural ability and, obviously, his work rate.
“He wanted to work, wanted to run. Amazing ability on the ball to beat a man. He wasn’t a small winger, he was a good size — the build of a midfield player — and such a big talent.”
    THE INJURIES FOLLOWED HIM
Despite a fresh start in London, Per couldn’t escape his injury problems.
On Chelsea’s part it was a gamble. But one that didn’t pay off.
Frank Arnesen said: “We knew about the injury problems he had, but we wanted to give him a chance.
“If he could get back to his true level, he would be a great player. He played some games, did well, but then, unfortunately, he got injured again.”
A scan showed scar tissue around his hamstring. He was told the only thing for it was rest, then after it has healed he would be able to build up the strength in his leg.
If he didn’t, his career would be over.
“Sometimes it’s unfortunate that the body just can’t cope with the intensity of training and the work,” Rodgers told The Athletic.
Frank Arnesen, far left, wanted to give Weihrauch a chance but injuries took their tollCredit: Getty – Contributor
“And that was clearly the case with Per. It was nothing to do with talent — he was a hugely talented player.
“He could have gone on and been a really top player, because he had the game for it, but he just couldn’t build up the rhythm and consistency.”
    IT’S OVER
Weihrauch went to Finland for an operation that was hoped would fix his injury problems.
However, it didn’t work. After seeing various specialists, the answer was the same.
His hamstring wouldn’t be able to survive the hardship of the modern game.
He was advised to retire and accept a minimal insurance payout for loss of future earnings.
Per was still only 19 at this point.
    MAKING A COMEBACK
Desperate not to give up the ghost, Weihrauch returned to his first club Hvidovre in 2009.
Soren Lerby, left, was Weihrauch’s agent and Frank Arnesen, right, brought him to Chelsea
Despite much fanfare about his arrival, he was unable to aid the club’s dream of returning to the Danish top flight.
Both parties decided it was impossible, but an offer from amateur team FC Copenhagen gave him hope.
Per played to around 70 per cent of his abilities, when he got the chance, and he told Ekstra Bladet in 2009, “It is definitely my goal to get my career going. I’m hoping for a new professional contract.”
But a new contract never came. Again, forced out of training for a year he realised now it was time to give up on a playing career.
He found a new life as a scout, working with his long agent Soren Lerby who managed clients including Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
Then, after returning to college and finishing his studies, he managed to score a job at Nordea in the financial sector of a bank in Denmark.
However, the disappointment of a promising career ending prematurely was perhaps too much to bare.
His death came as a surprise.
“Sadly, I lost contact with him over the last years,” Riemer said.
You’re Not AloneEVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide.
It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.
It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.
And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.
Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

“My impression is that he seemed to withdraw himself. Not many who knew him from his football days had contact with him in the last year or so.”
Riemer continued: “It’s difficult to talk about, even now. I try to stand back from the situation and I think to myself, ‘Per, why didn’t you call me? I would have done anything to help you’.
“But it was too late. I don’t think he felt he had the strength left.”

Meet stunning Chelsea TV presenter Olivia Buzaglo, who is the daughter of an FA Cup legend and stood up for Timo Werner

EVEN heckling Chelsea fans can’t put Blues TV presenter Olivia Buzaglo off her stride. The pretty brunette, who also works with Premier League Productions, was hosting an open day for Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge, when one supporter let his feelings known about Timo Werner during an interview.

Gorgeous Buzaglo kept her calm when a fan heckled Timo WernerCredit: Instagram / @oliviabuzaglo
With the chats going out over the Bridge’s PA system – and audible to the players – the supporter delivered a harsh message to the speedy striker.
He said: “Listen, I’ve got a word. Let’s have it. Get Werner out the club.”
As he was met with boos from the crowd, Olivia kept proceedings calm telling her audience to “forget that” as she continued to quiz the supporters.
Her ice cool reactions might’ve been something she inherited from her dad.
Tim Buzaglo was a FA Cup hero for Woking after scoring a hat-trick against West Brom in a famous 4-2 win in a 1991 third round tie.
    CHELSEA IN HER BLOOD
Olivia always dreamed of going into sports journalism, and is a die-hard Chelsea fan.
She began blogging for now defunct magazine Shoot, before scoring a job at Premier League Productions.
In 2016, she began with the non-affiliated Chelsea FC Fan TV on YouTube, recording live segments at Stamford Bridge or videos discussing main talking points.

It got her noticed by Chelsea TV, who soon welcomed her to their TV studio at Stamford Bridge and had her co-hosting a matchday show.
In the meantime, Premier League Productions also promoted her to hosting duties alongside Clinton Morrison and Robbie Savage, where she has worked on The Weekend Review.
But it’s with the European champions she’s her happiest. And Olivia hosted the club’s open day with fans that was spoiled by one fan hurling abuse at German forward Werner.
She later tweeted: “(Had) The best time co-hosting Chelsea’s open training.
“Lovely to speak to everyone there (even if there was one idiot that tried to ruin it). Hope you all had as much fun as I did.”
    FAMOUS DAD
Football bragging rights in the Buzaglo family, though, might still go to Olivia’s dad, Tim.
A livewire striker, he played his career in non-league after a stint in cricket representing Gibraltar’s national team.
However, he wrote his name in FA Cup folklore when he was part of a team that was responsible for one of the most famous giant-killings of the 1990s.
Buzaglo netted a hat-trick against West Brom in a stunning 4-2 win at the Hawthorns.

After the game, fans lifted him aloft on their shoulders to celebrate their victory.
They were drawn against Everton, with the tie switched to Goodison Park.
Although they fell to a 1-0 defeat, they left with their heads high for a spirited performance.
    COULD’VE BEEN A FOOTBALLER
Although broadcasting is now her forte, Olivia could’ve followed in her father’s footsteps.
A forward like dad, she starred for Maidenhead, QPR and Watford at youth level.
Her record at York Road of 45 goals in 39 games showed how prolific she was.
“I ended up joining Maidenhead because I played a friendly against them when I was playing for my team and I knew a couple of their players,” she said.
“Actually I had no intention of joining them but I must’ve scored in that game and one of their girls asked me to play in a friendly for them.

Football’s loss is TV’s gain, as Olivia continues to excel as a hostCredit: Instagram / @oliviabuzaglo

“I did and my manager at the time wasn’t happy! So I left and went to join Maidenhead instead. I only really played locally when I was younger. I played for a team called Knaphill and absolutely loved it.
“Then I played for Maidenhead, played a few games here and there for QPR and then got asked to play for Watford. But I had to make a choice between working in football and playing it and I chose working.”
What was football’s loss, is TV’s gain… and we’re sure you will find a few Chelsea fans who agree.

Chelsea star Trevoh Chalobah worked as a fashion model before becoming surprise starter in Thomas Tuchel’s first team

TREVOH Chalobah has come of age and appears to have cemented his place in Chelsea’s first team squad. The utility player has broken through aged 22, and finally seems to have forced his way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans following a man-of-the-match display against Villarreal in the Super Cup shootout win, as well as scoring on his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace.

The German tactician admitted as much himself, with the ex-England U21 international starring during preseason.
“He played well against Bournemouth, Arsenal and Tottenham,” Tuchel said after the game.
“We wanted guys on the field who could play 90 mins. He was one of the first in training, physically strong and deserved to play.
“It’s quite impressive. He forced his way into our thinking.
“Let’s see how it goes, he forced his way into our thinking. We still have some days to decide [his future].”
It’s a future that did look like being away from Stamford Bridge, with suggestions he was about to be sent on loan… again.
Chalobah has already endured long campaigns with Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town and French club Lorient.
The trendy footballer also starred in a fashion campaign for Italian leather goods company Valore London, before his sensational rise.
Titled ‘Future British Icons’, the photoshoot featured their Blazon monogram collection and showed Trevoh to be a trendsetter.

He and his older footballing brother Nathaniel, now 26, are both graduates of Chelsea’s famed academy, with the elder sibling now plying his trade at Watford.
The Chalobah story began in Africa.
    SIERRA LEONE TO SOUTH LONDON
Trevoh was born in Sierra Leone in 1999.
His family moved to Lambeth, South London when he was six and he soon discovered the beautiful game on his estate, where he and his brother played their football in a cage pitch.
“Moving here when I was 6 years old, I remember some parts of those initial days but my first real memory is seeing the cage,” he told Gaffer magazine.
“The park as well, where we used to go and play every day. We met a lot of friends there, a whole host of people who used to love football.
“We had community centres too and they were a big part of our childhood.”
At eight, Trevoh joined his brother Nathaniel at Cobham and worked his way up the ranks, before signing a pro contract in 2018.

Primarily playing at right or centre-back, he won the Uefa Youth League and FA Youth Cup alongside Mason Mount as a teenager.
He has also starred at every level for England from Under-16 to U21 level, and was part of the U19 team that won the European Championships in 2017.

    LOAN STAR
However, with chances limited at Stamford Bridge it was imperative that Trevoh left West London to get game-time elsewhere.
For the 2018-19 season, he was loaned out to then-Championship side Ipswich Town.
He played 44 times for the Tractor Boys, but despite impressing was unable to save the club from relegation.
The following season, it was in West Yorkshire where Trevoh had his next experience of Championship football with Huddersfield Town.
It was there he caught the eye of boss Danny Cowley.

“Trevoh Chalobah will be a top player,” he said.
He added: “He’s a really good learner and is always looking to add to his game.”
    A BRIT ABROAD
Last season, Chalobah continued his football education overseas with Lorient in Ligue 1 – with a need to test himself at a higher level.
He appeared to bulk up with extra weight sessions in the gym, which he proudly shows off on Instagram.
On the final day of the season, Trevoh wrote his name in Lorient’s record books when his goal against Strasbourg earned the club a 1-1 draw, but more importantly saved them from relegation.
He also had a ‘pinch me’ moment earlier in the season when he came up against the superstars of PSG – who Lorient record a famous 3-2 win over.
“Being on the same pitch as Angel Di Maria, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe – I’d been watching this team play in the Champions League. To beat them was unbelievable,” Chalobah said.
“Neymar was playing as a No 10.
“I had to mark him a lot. Even when I tackled him, it was like: ‘Wow, I tackled Neymar.’”

    HAVE A WORD
When Chalobah was just 17, he was visited in the England youth training camp by ex-Blues star Daniel Sturridge, who gave a talk to the youngsters.
The forward was quick to pass on his experience and advice. It was a message that has stuck for the model pro.
“Daniel was with the senior England squad but he sat us all down and told us our main aim should be football,” Chalobah told The Athletic.
“He told us how important sleep is. Instead of going out to parties and things, have the strength to say no. Football has to come first at this time. That’s how he is, he wanted to help us not go down the route some other players.
“I’ve always kept that in my head, from Chelsea, to my loans at Ipswich and Huddersfield. There are temptations to go out, but you have to have the power to step away.
“You need to rest for training and to get ready for the game. We are all human beings, sometimes you need to relax but you have to pick the right time. I like going out for meals. I’ve been out clubbing a few times, the cinema, but only at the right moment.”
Trevoh Chalobah said he doesn’t get swayed by the party lifestyleCredit: Rex
    THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN
After his star show against Villarreal and strike against Palace, Chalobah may have just changed his footballing future.
It looked like he was headed for a fourth consecutive loan, with competition for places fierce.
Toni Rudiger, Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma would all definitely be ahead of him in the pecking order.
Right-backs Cesar Azpilicueta and Reece James both played in the back three last season and may well be trusted more if it comes to it.

While, France international defender Jules Kounde is said to be next on Tuchel’s shopping list in s blockbuster £70million deal.
Whatever the future holds, Chalobah has a lot to offer.
For Tuchel, trying to fit him into his squad will be a headache he will be happy to have.

Chelsea’s wonderkids who failed to make the grade and where they are now, including Kakuta, McEachran and Kenedy

IT’S all been about the kids at Chelsea over recent years ever since Frank Lampard promoted a host of them two years ago.Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Reece James all benefited massively under the club legend’s stewardship with several young stars still involved under his replacement Thomas Tuchel.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is not afraid to give youth a chance at Stamford BridgeCredit: EPA
But this is a club who have also been known for nabbing and nurturing some of English football’s finest, only for them to fail to make the grade.
SunSport takes a look back at seven of the most memorable boy wonders who shone bright early on before burning out.GAEL KAKUTA
The name will remain synonymous with off-field controversy at Stamford Bridge, but Kakuta was once the brightest young thing at the club.
Chelsea were hit with a 16-month transfer ban by Fifa in 2009 for allegedly inducing Kakuta to break his contract with French club Lens in 2007.
The move appeared to be worth it as Kakuta won Academy Player of the Year, finished top scorer for the youth side and won the U19 European Championship with France.
When he made his first-team debut in 2009 after a four-month ban from Fifa, a Mail on Sunday article was headlined: “Chelsea’s new wonder boy worth all the fuss.”
A decade later, Kakuta signed with French club Amiens in what is the 13th professional club of his career and after impressing there the now 30-year-old has returned to Lens after impressing on loan there last term.
Gael Kakuta signed with Chelsea in 2007 but is now on loan at Rens from Amiens
He went out on loan to six clubs during six years with Chelsea’s first-team before eventually moving on to Sevilla.
There were a couple of years in China and a return to Spain before switching to France.
Embarrassingly, Kakuta was embroiled in a court case in 2014 when a broke former footballer masqueraded as him to fund a luxury lifestyle.
Medi Abalimba was jailed after racking up huge bills in hotels and nightclubs pretending to be the ex-Chelsea star.JOSH MCEACHRAN
Back in 2010, a 17-year-old McEachran emerged as the brightest young talent in the Chelsea academy.
The Blues fought off the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United to sign the teenager.
McEachran was expected to evolve from starlet to star at Chelsea and, in turn, be the successor to Lampard’s crown in midfield.
Josh McEachran was expected to become a Chelsea superstar and had an ill-fated spell at Brentford
Then England U21s boss Stuart Pearce said: “He’s got a really outstanding talent, similar to Jack Wilshere, and it bodes well for England.
“If Josh and Jack were wearing Spanish shirts, you would revere them.”
The arrival of Andre Villas-Boas to Stamford Bridge in 2011 brought an end to McEachran’s progression and he sought opportunities on loan.
He was sent out to five clubs in three years, from Watford to Wigan, but struggled to settle at any.
In 2015, he broke free of Chelsea’s loan army and joined Brentford on a permanent deal, a move which had highs and lows until his release in the summer of 2019.
McEachran, now 28, went on to join Birmingham City but only played eight Championship matches before signing for MK Dons on a free in March.BERTRAND TRAORE
The repercussions of Traore’s move to Chelsea in 2013 were felt at Stamford Bridge two years ago.
Lampard’s inability to make any signings upon taking over due to the Blues were slapped with a transfer ban was down to Traore’s arrival back in 2013.
Bertrand Traore ended up playing just 16 times for Chelsea
Traore’s move to Chelsea was one of the key components in Fifa’s evidence as part of an investigation into the club’s signing of foreign players under the age of 18.
Fifa said it found breaches in 29 cases out of the 92 investigated.
In the end, Traore played just 16 times for Chelsea and departed for Lyon in an £8.8m move in 2017.
In France, he impressed scoring 21 goals in 87 games for the club.
His return to form earned Traore, 25, a move back to the Premier League with Aston Villa a year ago.
    SLOBODAN RAJKOVIC
When a 16-year-old Rajkovic signed for Chelsea in 2005, it was seen as a giant coup.
The centre-back, tipped to succeed John Terry in defence, had spent the previous summer at Arsenal’s youth camp.
The majority of Europe’s big beasts were looking to sign the talented defender, including Man United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Inter Milan and Monaco.
A work permit stalled Rajkovic’s progression at Chelsea so he was sent to Holland on loan, to PSV, Twente and then Vitesse Arnhem.
Slobodan Rajkovic was wanted by Europe’s biggest clubs and enjoyed a stint at Palermo
Villas-Boas gave the Serbian centre-back his first start for Chelsea, in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Wycombe Wanderers in 2011.
The same year Rajkovic was sold to Hamburg in a £1.8m deal.
His career never really ignited, making just 42 appearances for the German side in four years.
Rajkovic spent three years with Italian club Palermo but was released after they finished bottom of Serie B.
The boy once wanted by all was last plying his trade in Russia with FC Lokomotiv Moscow but he his contract was terminated earlier this year by mutual consent.

    DOMINIC SOLANKE
Jose Mourinho made it clear how much potential Solanke had at Chelsea.
Back in 2014, in his second stint as Stamford Bridge boss, Mourinho named Solanke in a list of players who would be representing their countries in a few years.
“In this moment, we have players who will be Chelsea players.  And when they become Chelsea players, they will become England players, almost for sure,” Mourinho said.
Quite understandable given Solanke success in the youth ranks.
He was England’s Youth Player of the Year in 2014, Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year the following season and earned his first-team debut aged just 17.
Solanke was the prolific goalscorer who helped Chelsea to successive FA Youth Cups in 2014 and 2015, as well as a Uefa Youth League.
But two years ago, at the age of 19, Solanke opted for a new beginning having not seen first-team opportunities come his way.
He headed for Merseyside with Liverpool where he made 21 appearances in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team but only scored on the final day of the 2017-18 season.
Bournemouth forked out a whopping £19m for the 23-year-old in 2019 and he is a key part of their side pushing for promotion from the Championship.
Solanke was Chelsea’s academy star striker but ended up being sold to Liverpool before joining Bournemouth

    ISLAM FERUZ
Liverpool star Andrew Robertson once described Feruz, his then team-mate at Celtic, as the ‘golden boy’ of the Scottish youth football.
Feruz was plucked away by Chelsea in 2011, aged 15, to be another star at the club’s Cobham academy.
But such promise didn’t translate into success for the striker as he was sent out on loan to Crete, Blackpool, Hibernian, Royal Excel Mouscron and Swindon Town.
Islam Feruz is now without a club having been known as the ‘golden boy’ of Scottish football
And when his contract at Chelsea came to an end in 2017 he was released.
Despite only being 25-years-old, Feruz has been without a club since and set up a baseball cap brand in the meantime.
Over five years as a Blues player, and sent on as many loans, Feruz made just 20 professional appearances and scored no goals.
Chelsea deemed the striker, once the darling of Scottish youth football, to have lost his potential.KENEDY
The winger arrived in West London as a teen from Fluminense in August 2015 and he soon scored his first goal for the club in the League Cup at Walsall in a 4-1 win.
Later that season in March he needed just 39 seconds to break the deadlock in another win at Norwich and ended up making 15 Premier League appearances for the club.
Hopes were high that his development would continue with a loan spell at Watford but he only managed to make one league appearance in a dismal stint at Vicarage Road.

Kenedy then headed to Newcastle in what turned out to ben 18-month loan in January 2018 and he did gain some top-flight experience with 38 Prem appearances.
Unfortunately for him that spell also led to him making history during a poor display against Cardiff.
He became the first player since 2010 to play a full Prem first half without completing a single pass before his additional time penalty was saved by Neil Etheridge.
Toon failed to make that move permanent and he has since spent the last two seasons in Spain on loan at Getafe and then Granada.
Now the Brazilian is finalising a return to his homeland in a loan move to Flamengo in a move that can be turned permanent next summer for £8m.

Aubameyang, 32, and Lacazette, 30, were both sidelined in Arsenal’s opening day 2-0 defeat away to Premier League newcomers Brentford.
They were both ill, and according to The Times, they might not recover in time to return to training for Chelsea’s visit.
It is also claimed Arsenal were open to selling the duo, despite captain Aubameyang only signing a three-year deal, worth a reported £350,000-a-week, last year.
But Frenchman Lacazette is now in the final year of his Emirates deal, and able to negotiate a free transfer away in January.
Arsenal had registered an interest in Abraham, 23, who Chelsea allowed to leave after re-signing Romelu Lukaku, 28, for £97.5million.
But the England striker has instead moved closer to a £34m switch to Roma, who are managed by former Blues boss Jose Mourinho.

As a result, it leaves Arsenal unlikely to sell Aubameyang and Lacazette with no replacements being identified.
They were linked with a move for Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez, 23, who is now expected to stay in Italy after Lukaku’s departure.
Eddie Nketiah, 22, is also out with an ankle knock until next month meaning Arteta turned to Folarin Balogun, 20, against Brentford.
But the ex-Gunners youth star failed to make an impact. Gabriel Martinelli, 20, is another option who could be moved from out wide to a central role.

Chelsea flops Drinkwater, Barkley and Bakayoko ‘told to organise transfer exits’ after being stripped of squad numbers

Now The Athletic claims the threesome have all been instructed by Thomas Tuchel to ‘organise moves elsewhere’ this summer.
And to further demonstrate they have no future in West London, none of the three players have even been given a squad number.
If the three midfielders can be offloaded then it would improve an already successful window for Chelsea.
They have registered a net spend of just £1.5million so far this summer.
The Blues have only made two signings up until now with goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli arriving first on a free after leaving Fulham and Romelu Lukaku’s record £97.5m transfer from Inter Milan.
However, a total of nine players have been sold and earned Roman Abramovich’s club £96m in the process to fund Lukaku’s return.

And Tammy Abraham is also on the verge of sealing his switch to Roma.
Barkley, 27, spent the last campaign on loan with Aston Villa and scored three goals in 24 games.
He has been at Chelsea since 2018 but has only made 52 appearances for them in the Premier League.
The Blues forked out £35m to sign Drinkwater, 31, in 2017 but he last played competitively for them over 1,100 days ago.
He was shipped out to Turkish side Kasimpasa on loan last term but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to get fixed up this season with a new club.

Meanwhile Lyon have joined AC Milan and Napoli in a bidding war for Chelsea outcast Bakayoko.
Napoli hold a strong interest for the France international, who is highly rated by manager Luciano Spalletti.
The 26-year-old underwent a loan stint at the Partenopei last season where he amassed 44 appearances.
Milan also continue to follow developments around the Frenchman’s status, who spent the 2018-2019 season out on loan with the Rossoneri.
The out-of-favour ace joined Chelsea in 2017 following a £40million deal with Monaco where he stood out playing with the like of Kylian Mbappe, Radamel Falcao, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy and more.
However, Bakayoko only managed three goals and three assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.
