Chelsea player ratings: Ruben Loftus-Cheek shines but Marcos Alonso fails to take chance in Ben Chilwell’s absence

CHELSEA leave Sweden with another three points in the Champions League – but Malmo took some breaking down. Hakim Ziyech’s second half winner was all that separated the pair, just weeks after the Blues won the initial fixture 4-0.

It may not have been Chelsea’s most inspiring performance but proved enough to take home the win.
Here is how Simon Phillip’s rated Thomas Tuchel’s men.
    Edouard Mendy – 7
Was involved a bit on the ball playing out from the back but didn’t really have any shots to make saves for.
    Andreas Christensen – 7
Good involvement in some of our attacking build up play and defended well, in particular sniffing out a threat in the first half tackling in the box.
Thiago Silva provided the calmness that Chelsea neededCredit: AFP
    Thiago Silva – 7
I say it every game, but he provided the calmness that Chelsea needed in the centre of defence as Malmo did operate with a good high press. Took a cynical booking in the second half.
    Antonio Rudiger – 7
Usual battling game from him and Malmo put him under pressure whenever he was on the ball. He was also useful with a couple of good passes over the top in attack.

    Cesar Azpilicueta – 7
He looked a bit rusty at the start of the game and reiterated why Reece James in probably ahead of him now in that position. As the game went on he settled nicely and contributed well.
    Jorginho – 7
Was involved in most of what Chelsea did and helped them keep such a high possession number. He quietly went about his business but what he does often goes unnoticed.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek had a standout performanceCredit: Reuters
    Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 9
Some great moments and lovely touches from him once again and he also should have had two assists with two beautiful through balls to Kai Havertz, who couldn’t finish any of them off.
    Marcos Alonso – 6
Doesn’t provide the same effect and pace as Ben Chilwell does and ghosted a lot in the game. Tidy when he needed to be though and didn’t do a lot wrong.
Marcos Alonso failed to take his chanceCredit: Reuters
    Callum Hudson-Odoi – 8
Wasn’t doing enough in the first half despite trying to be that main threat. Tuchel switched him to the right in the second half and he was superb, especially his inch perfect pass for the opening goal.
    Hakim Ziyech – 7
He looked brighter than he did at Newcastle, but that wasn’t difficult. It was good to see improvements though and he got the opening goal as well as some other good moments in the game.

    Kai Havertz – 7
Some bright moments but again, a little inconsistent with his touches and contribution to Chelsea’s attacking play in the first half, but it was his great build up play and pass that helped set up the opening goal.

Ross Barkley for Ziyech (73 mins) – 8
An instant threat with some good over the top passes and long range efforts on goal.
    Christian Pulisic for Hudson-Odoi (73 mins) – 8
Very tidy on the ball and didn’t look like he hasn’t played for 80 days. Good attacking threat making runs in behind.

Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw against Brighton, meaning Thomas Tuchel’s runaway leaders went three points clear.

Kepa Arrizabalaga hailed as MIND-READER as Chelsea keeper wins THIRD penalty shootout this season… in four games played

KEPA ARRIZBALAGA was hailed as a mind-reader after more penalty heroics. The keeper helped seal Chelsea’s Carabao Cup fifth-round spot by saving Theo Walcott’s effort and seeing Will Smallbone’s attempt fly way over the bar.

Team-mate Ben Chilwell, who scored his kick, tweeted: “I think Kepa can read minds.”
Kepa, 27, has twice been the shootout hero already this season, winning Chelsea the Super Cup and then helping the Blues in the previous round of the Carabao Cup against Aston Villa.
After two brilliant late saves to kep the Blues in the tie against Southampton, he again came up trumps from the spot – for the third time in four matches this campaign – and won the praise of his manager Thomas Tuchel.
Tuchel said: “When everyone thinks about stoppage time and penalties it is a dangerous moment, you can lose concentration.
“It was important that Kepa kept us in the game with the double header save from the set pieces.”
The Spaniard came into the game in replacement of in-form No1 Edouard Mendy, 29, to take up his role as cup keeper.

Kai Havertz, 21, put the Blues ahead just before half-time with a header.
But only two minutes after the break Che Adams levelled – with a goal from which Kepa really should have done better as the ball went under him.
Despite both teams knocking on the door, the deadlock was not broken as the tie went to penalties.
Chelsea prevailed 4-3, with Reece James, hammering home the decisive penalty.
Chelsea will now turn their attention on a trip to Newcastle on Saturday.
Tuchel added: “I just said that now we have nine or 10 games in December. That’s our own fault but we hate to lose.
“We go out and play to win. All credit to the guys, they gave everything.
“We have one day off mentally and physically then two days to prepare for Newcastle.”

Chelsea player ratings: Kepa Arrizabalaga pulls off shootout heroics again but Hakim Ziyech fails to shine on rare start

CHELSEA again prevailed via penalty shootout – and once again had Kepa Arrizabalaga and Reece James to thankAfter a 1-1 draw with Southampton, Kepa saved a crucial spot-kick and James fired in the decisive winner in a carbon copy of the previous round against Aston Villa.

The Blues won 4-3 in the shootout to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Here’s how Simon Phillips rated Thomas Tuchel’s performers.
    Kepa Arrizabalaga – 7/10
Made a few easy saves in the first half and didn’t have a lot to do – but he gifted Southampton with the equaliser early in the second half.
He did then go on to make four or five top saves to keep Chelsea in the game late on and force a shootout, before a brilliant penalty save from Theo Walcott low down to his right.
    Reece James – 7
He was a little quiet as he was playing as a centre-back rather than as a wing-back.
But he did his job well, defended strongly and used his physicality against a tough battling side. Scored the decisive penalty.

    Trevoh Chalobah – 8
In Thiago Silva’s absence, Chelsea have a defender who is equally as calm and composed at the heart of the defence.
Played in the middle of the three and marshalled his defence, making a few good blocks and tackles to keep Chelsea in the game at times.
    Malang Sarr – 5
He looked comfortable in the first half, but the second half he looked panicky and struggled when pressed.
Didn’t look much like Chelsea quality.

    Callum Hudson-Odoi – 7
Certainly wasn’t his best opening 45 minutes, although he was still one of the more threatening players in the Chelsea attack.
But in the second half he was a bit more lively and tried hard to make things happen. He did put his penalty away in the shootout as well.
    Saul Niguez – 6
He was doing the basics well, but didn’t really bring anything extra to the table and was another guilty of needlessly giving away possession when Chelsea needed to keep it.
He was a goal threat in the second half though and probably should have scored.

    Mateo Kovacic – 8
Chelsea’s only real bright spark in the first half trying to make things happen and often trying to keep possession for Chelsea by himself.
    Marcos Alonso – 5
Poor in the first 45 minutes, he wasn’t doing enough in possession and gave it away a lot, was sloppy and did little to help break Southampton’s high press.
He was a bit of a passenger in the second half as well, but took a good penalty in the shootout.

    Ross Barkley – 5
A few good touches and moments from him linking up with Havertz.
But overall he wasted a chance to stake a claim for a place in Tuchel’s team and was subbed off on 66 minutes.
    Hakim Ziyech – 4
He had a terrible first half, there are no two ways about it, he was passing to Southampton players more than Chelsea’s and didn’t look on it at all.
His second half wasn’t any better and he got taken off on 66 minutes.
Hakim Ziyech got taken off on 66 minutesCredit: Alamy
    Kai Havertz – 7
He put Chelsea ahead with a lovely header and looked their biggest threat really in the first half.
He didn’t get a lot to work with and those around him weren’t firing either which didn’t help.
    SUBS
Ben Chilwell for Ross Barkley (66 mins) – 6
Added some needed legs for Chelsea and helped keep possession. Scored his penalty in the shoot out.
Mason Mount for Hakim Ziyech (66 mins) – 6
Came on and missed a golden pass to put Havertz in, but his presence alone helped Chelsea’s intensity. Missed his penalty in the shootout.

Kepa kills talk of Chelsea transfer exit as keeper says ‘confidence is high’ as he eyes cup double as Blues back-up

KEPA ARRIZABALAGA said his ‘confidence is high again’ and wants a cup double as Chelsea’s No2. And despite being linked with a move away as he plays understudy to Edouard Mendy, the Spaniard admitted he feels ‘very good’ as Blues back-up.

Kepa, 27, said: “When you are in the same place for years, you feel confident. You feel like you are more at home, more comfortable.
“I have been playing with the same guys for a couple of years and it’s good – I feel very good at this club right now.”
Kepa signed for Chelsea in 2018 for a world record £71.6million but has endured a rocky road at Stamford Bridge.
Last summer, Mendy, 29, was brought in for £22m for Rennes in France and soon established himself as No1.
The bargain Senegalese stopper has kept seven clean sheets in 12 matches this season, conceding just five.
It has kept Kepa sidelined and he is set to be reduced to playing only in cup competitions.

But the former Athletic Bilbao stopper, who has won the Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea, has embraced his role.
And with two runners-up medals after unsuccessful Carabao and FA Cup finals, he is looking to add the domestic trophies to his collection.
Kepa said: “Look, I want this trophy because we’ve won the Europa League, the Champions League, and the Super Cup – all of them in Europe – but we lost in the Carabao Cup final and two FA Cup finals.
“So we have these trophies in our minds, we want these trophies in our hands. We have to go step by step, do the right things, but of course we want to fight to win them.”
Kepa has played just three times this season, all in different competitions, making appearances in the Carabao Cup, Super Cup and Premier League.
I have been playing with the same guys for a couple of years and it’s good – I feel very good at this club right now.Kepa Arrizabalaga
It has led to speculation he could look to leave the club, with Italian clubs Juventus and Lazio recently linked.
But despite the cameo appearances so far – which has already seen two heroic shootout performances – Kepa insisted his confidence is sky high.
He revealed: “I feel more relaxed in everything now. I feel everything is going in the right way, and confident.
“I’ve felt my confidence is high again, and at Stamford Bridge we feel the support of our fans back again at the stadium.
“So, step by step, we are going in the right direction.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel hails set-piece secret weapon after Andreas Christensen scored his first in 137 GAMES

THOMAS TUCHEL hailed his set-piece coaching specialist and said “it is a good sign” after Andreas Christensen finally broke his scoring duck. The defender, who has been a Blue senior since 2013, was on the end of a Thiago Silva cross to open the lead against Malmo last week – finding the net for the first time in 137 GAMES.

It was the first in a game Tuchel’s side went on to win 4-0, but will be a day Christensen never forgets after finally converting for Chelsea.
But his manager was quick to credit Anthony Barry, a member of his coaching staff who specialises in set-pieces.
Tuchel wrote in the Chelsea programme for the game with Southampton: “It is important for us that we have many different players performing and we have many different goalscorers this season.
“I said after the Malmo game last week that it is a good sign when Andreas starts to score – and I think our set-piece coach, Anthony Barry, can be very, very proud!
“It is important to be able to score in situations like this and it is good that we have several different people who can score.
“Everybody needs to step up when there are so many games and so many competitions to fight for.
“The guys who get the chances need to take them, and when the games keep arriving we need the goals to win them so we can progress in all the different competitions.”

Christensen, 25, has made ten appearances this season, six in the league, and is in talks to extend his current contract, which is due to expire in June.
Tuchel warned looks can be deceiving when it comes to the ever-improving Dane and argues the best is yet to come.
Before Chelsea’s Carabao Cup game with Southhampton, he said: “He’s a calm guy, very intelligent player, and sometimes you can get maybe a bit misled by judging him from his personality, because he is a hard defender and he is a guy who is not shy to have hard tackles and win challenges and step up in games.
“He found his place. He is very strong, very reliable and he has not reached his limits because at his age there is still room to improve.
“He can be a top defender for us in the next years and hopefully he will be because he comes from the academy.
“He knows what it takes and he has improved massively so far but it is not done yet – you have to show it over and over.
“There are big examples in this club of what it takes to be a legend in defence and there is still a way to go but we are very happy so far.”

Ruthless Chelsea ‘did not want to stop’ scoring as Tuchel admits ‘feeling horrible’ for Norwich boss Farke after 7-0 win

THOMAS TUCHEL admitted ‘feeling horrible’ for Norwich boss Daniel Farke as Chelsea ‘did not want to stop’ scoring in their 7-0 thrashing. Norwich travel 100 miles home rock bottom in the Premier League, while the Blues maintained top spot after nine matches played.

Chelsea were already 3-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from academy stars Mason Mount, 22, Callum Hudson-Odoi, 20, and Reece James, 21.
But a strike from Ben Chilwell, 24, Max Aaron’s own goal and two more from Mount saw the league leaders ruthlessly hammer Norwich.
Tuchel once worked with Farke at Borussia Dortmund and could not help but admit feeling sorry for his old friend.
He told BT Sport: “The focus was that we keep the same intensity and we create opportunities.
“This is what we demanded. You need luck to score and you need the moment. That’s why I’m happy because the intensity was high and the rhythm was high.
“I feel very sorry because we did not stop and we didn’t want to stop. We said at half-time we wanted to keep going.
“It feels horrible for Daniel today – I hope he keeps his head up and puts his team back on track. He deserves it and he’s a good guy.”

Chelsea have now won their last three league matches since losing to champions Manchester City in September.
But with Southampton to come in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, Tuchel warned his players not to rest of their laurels to make sure they maintain their winning form.
He said: “We played a good performance. We were sharp and put in a lot of effort.
“We pressed high and won many balls, we played with a high rhythm and created a lot of chances.
“To score seven you also need a bit of luck and momentum, but it was a good effort.
“This is just one game, the next one follows on Tuesday evening. The players deserve all the credit, but it’s also only one game.”

Chelsea star Mason Mount admits ‘I put pressure on myself’ to get goals – but returns to scoring ways with a hat-trick

MASON MOUNT admitted to putting himself under heavy pressure to get back to scoring goals – but returned to the scoresheet with a hat-trick. Before Norwich’s visit to Stamford Bridge, Mount had not scored since May, in Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final win against Real Madrid.

And ahead of the match, the England international said it was ‘about time’ he put one into the back of the net.
But after then going on to get THREE, Mount told BT Sport: “Before the game I put pressure on myself to get on the scoresheet, then three came around in the same game.
“It’s obviously a massive moment for me. I’ll remember this one for a long time.
“I was always getting in positions to score, but I just wasn’t putting it in the back of the net.”
Mount, 22, opened the scoring after ten minutes with a classy volley to break his five-month Chelsea goal drought.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, 20, Reece James, 21, Ben Chilwell, 24, and an own goal from Norwich’s Max Aarons, 21, saw the lead extend further.

But a late Mount penalty and tap in following a powerful run from Ruben Loftsus-Cheek, 25, saw the hat-trick sealed.
Chelsea were without injured pair Romelu Lukaku, 28, and Timo Werner, 25, but the Blues emphatically proved capable of scoring without their presence.
Mount said: “I thought the last one might be offside. It was my luck today, but it’s also about the team.
“We spoke before about being at it from the beginning, we did that today. Players came in in the absence of other players.
“We were on it the entire game but we never dropped our standards and kept going. I always want to play every game.
“Sometimes you’ve got to take a backwards step, but in the last couple of games I’ve felt at it and ready to play.
“It’s a big moment for me to score three at home at Stamford Bridge.”
