Rio Ferdinand believes Mason Mount and Phil Foden could be two best players in world in future… but what do stats say?

IT’S an exciting time to be an England fan with two of the top young talents in world football ready to usher in a new Golden Generation.Mason Mount and Phil Foden have long been tipped as stars of the future.
How Phil Foden and Mason Mount compare in all competitions this season
But after helping lead Chelsea and Manchester City to the Champions League final earlier this week, their stock has never been higher.
Mount, 22, and Foden, 20, have both been making waves for club and country.
The Chelsea man particularly is now a near-ever-present in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
Foden, too, is surely a shoo-in for this summer’s Euro 2020 squad.
Three Lions fans can sit back and just enjoy watching the midfield maestros strut their stuff week-in and week-out – now both undroppable for their clubs.
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand even went as far as saying the pair could be GOATs of the future.
Ferdinand told BT Sport: “I think Mason Mount and Phil Foden could be two of the best players in the world in the future.
“These players have the potential to be on the top table of world football.”

But which of the pair has enjoyed the better 2020-21 campaign so far?
We’ve taken a look at both players’ incredible stats across all competitions this season and it makes for incredible reading.
Both Mount and Foden have played nearly 50 times this season – with the Chelsea man leading 49 to 46.
The Blues midfielder has played more minutes at 3,800 to Foden’s 3,119.
Despite that, Foden has scored AND assisted more this season.
The City star has scored 14 times and laid on ten assists, with Mount chipping in with nine goals and seven assists.
Mount leads the way in chances created with 97 to Foden’s 74 – while also completing over 600 more passes (2,175 vs 1,550).
Chelsea and City both have stars for the future in Mount and Foden – and so do EnglandCredit: Rex
But Foden’s passing accuracy is marginally higher at 88 per cent to Mount’s 87 per cent.
The Chelsea man has attempted six dribbles more than the City star at 125 to 119.
However, Foden is completing them more often with a 55 per cent success rate to Mount’s 50 per cent.
Mount has taken nearly 1,000 extra touches compared to Foden (3,110 vs 2,224) while earning one more foul (53 vs 52).
But the City man has enjoyed more team success, with a sky-high 80 per cent win rate when he’s been in the team, with the Chelsea star coming out on top in 55 per cent of games.
Ultimately, it’s too close to call across the board. Chelsea and Man City both have superstars for the next decade or more.
    And so do England…

Uefa reveal Champions League Team of the Week which includes XI Prem players… but no Kante despite Chelsea masterclass

UEFA have named their Champions League Team of the Week – made up exclusively of Premier League players.Chelsea booked their place in the final in Istanbul by beating Real Madrid on Wednesday night, joining Manchester City who blew by Paris Saint-Germain a night earlier.
The Champions League Team of the Week is comprised entirely of Chelsea and City stars

Uefa have now named their best XI from the Champions League semi-final second legs – with only Blues and City stars making the cut.
But bizarrely, there was no room for N’Golo Kante who’s defensive midfield masterclass shut down Real Madrid’s star-studded midfield trio of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro.
Europe’s governing body opted for an obscure 5-1-3-1 formation – meaning there was room for just one central midfielder.
Uefa opted for Mason Mount over Kante in that spot, with the England ace scoring the tie-clinching second goal at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.
In goal, Edouard Mendy was an absolute shoo-in after his flawless performance against Real.
The French stopper – who shared Chelsea’s incredible dressing room celebrations on social media – made a series of stunning saves to keep the Blues in the tie, as Timo Werner and Mount did the business up the other end.
In defence, Kyle Walker and Ben Chilwell take the wing-back slots after shutting down Neymar and Vinicius Jr respectively.
Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Ruben Dias locked in the three central defensive positions after phenomenal individual performances during the week.

Dias kept superstar Kylian Mbappe out of the game at the Etihad, while Silva and Azpilicueta ensured Karim Benzema and Eden Hazard were utterly anonymous in West London.
Werner – who nodded into an empty net from one yard out – leads the line after putting in a lung-busting shift on Wednesday.
He has three attacking midfielders for support in Uefa’s Champions League Team of the Week.
Man City and England whiz Phil Foden takes the left-wing spot, with two-goal hero Riyad Mahrez on the right.
Kai Havertz takes the No10 slot playing off his Chelsea pal Werner in the team after a strong performance against Los Blancos.
However, their inclusion means there’s no room for superstar Kevin De Bruyne in this week’s XI.

Edouard Mendy made a string of sublime saves as Thomas Tuchel’s men were almost made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal.
But Mason Mount killed off the tie with a late goal to set up an all-English Champions League final with Manchester City.
And after celebrating on the pitch, Chelsea’s heroes retired to the dressing room to carry on the party.
Mendy shared a video of his team-mates going nuts in wild scenes while outside the ground dozens of Blues fans – ignoring social distancing guidelines – celebrated a first final in the competition since 2012 in the streets of west London.
Defender Antonio Rudiger tweeted a picture from the dressing room which read: “WE DID IT. Off to the final!!! #whatateam #Hustle #AlwaysBelieve”.
Mateo Kovacic shared the same snap with the caption: “Istanbul next!”
    Ben Chilwell added: “This team!”
Callum Hudson-Odoi shared a group picture with the message: “FINALSS HERE WE COMEEEE!!!”

Billy Gilmour added: “Istanbul here we come!!!”
After the game, Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta lauded the battling Blues for booking their spot in the final – chasing a first Champions League title in nine years.
Azpilicueta said: “We have a fantastic squad, everybody pushes hard in training, to be together, to fight for everyone and to help each other.
“This is massive and we have created a strong group. We have plenty of things to fight for.
“It’s a Champions League final… we have played City lots of times but it’s the Champions League final.
“We believe in ourselves, we know we have to work hard but we are ready for it.”

Goalscorer Mount added: “I can’t put into words. Great performance tonight.
“We should’ve probably had about five…
“To get that one late on, you can see by the celebrations, it was a massive goal for us and gave us breathing space in the last five minutes.
“We gave everything and we had that desire to win first half.
“We haven’t won anything yet. Hopefully we’ve got two massive cup finals and hopefully we can win.”
Chelsea legend Didier Drogba even got in on the celebrations, tweeting: “Let’s goooooooooooooo. We are going to Istanbul my People.”

Chelsea verdict: Blues dominated Real Madrid but must be more clinical to really stake a claim to be Europe’s best

CHELSEA beat Real Madrid 2-0 to see them head through to the Champions League final in a memorable match for the Blues. Thomas Tuchel’s men ultimately won the tie 3-1 on aggregate following the first-leg draw in Madrid.
Chelsea’s young attack were wasteful against Real Madrid but on their day they will be unstoppableCredit: EPA
But it could have been even more comfortable for the Blues, who bossed it from start to finish at Stamford Bridge, apart from a couple of world-class saves from Edouard Mendy to deny Karim Benzema in the first half.
Mason Mount’s late strike eventually made it safe for the Blues.
But it could, and should, have been a totally different ball game for Chelsea as chance after chance went begging. In the end, they could probably have actually won by four or five.
It was a world-class performance from Chelsea over the two legs to get to the final of domestic football’s most prestigious competition.
But – without being too negative – they were wasteful and on another night may have fallen foul of a sucker punch and not made the final in Istanbul.
Their attack is young and still learning, so it is something that will improve and get better in time.
When they get better in the final third and make better decisions they will be challenging to be one of the best teams in the world under Tuchel.
The German coach has come in and brought confidence to this whole squad – getting them playing some great and pragmatic football, too.

They looked organised and professional over the two legs against one of football’s giants in Real Madrid, who they actually ended up making look fairly average in the end.
Chelsea are said to be in the hunt for a new big-name striker this summer.
Can you even begin to imagine just how good they can be when they bring that player in?
The sky will be the limit for this team and Tuchel is building something special here.
The former Paris Saint-Germain chief is creating a team no-one will want to play against.
And that’s exactly what Tuchel promised on his arrival at Chelsea.

Chelsea player ratings: Edouard Mendy a perfect ten as Timo Werner impresses with goal and work rate

CHELSEA booked their spot in the Champions League final after beating Real Madrid 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. The Blues will now face Manchester City – who demolished Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night – in Istanbul.

But how did Chelsea’s players fare in Wednesday’s West London showdown en route to a 3-1 aggregate victory? Here are SunSport’s ratings…
    Edouard Mendy – 10
Made a pair of world class saves from Karim Benzema in the first half to keep Chelsea in control of the tie.
A calming presence after the break and Blues coasted into the final.
    Andreas Christensen – 8
He was solid and putting himself about physically, not letting Real Madrid’s attackers settle too much on the ball.
    Thiago Silva – 8
Lead by example and was confident and composed at the heart of the defence again. Made it look easy at times.
    Antonio Rudiger – 9
The German defender was riled and well up for this, as he played in his face mask.
His storming runs forward with the ball troubled Madrid, and he defended like a maniac.

    Cesar Azpilicueta – 8
Used his experience wisely to win free kicks or to break up potential counter attacks.
His presence and experience was definitely a plus for Chelsea tonight.
    N’Golo Kante – 9
Kante was being Kante, breaking up play, not giving Real Madrid any time to settle on the ball.
He defended his heart out, and even helped create the goal for Timo Werner in the first half.
    Jorginho – 9
Did well to compose himself after being booked early on and was instrumental in a lot of Chelsea’s play.
Made many great interceptions and defended very well.
    Ben Chilwell – 7
Decent game, but he seemed to be bothered by an early tussle with Vincius Jr that continued to put him off. He largely defended well against the pacy Brazilian though.
    Mason Mount – 8
He was everywhere again and is such an important player for Chelsea’s intensity and counter attacks.
Could have made better decisions with some of his passes in the final third though.
Took his late goal well to send Chelsea to the final.
Timor Werner impressed by grabbing the opening goal and with his work-rateCredit: AFP
    Timo Werner – 8
Really could not miss his first-half goal.
But again he was a nuisance to the Real Madrid backline with his pace and intense pressing and he attacked well with the ball.
    Kai Havertz – 8
Same as Mount, he could have made better decisions in the final third at times, but his overall game and work rate was excellent.
He looked to be a threat whenever he got the ball.
    SUBS
Christian Pulisic for Werner (67 mins) – 9: Had an instant impact with his direct play and pace, did well to keep hold of possession for Chelsea.
Reece James for Azpilicueta (88 mins) – N/A
Hakim Ziyech for Mount (89 mins) – N/A

How Chelsea could line up against Real Madrid with Mount FIT after injury scare but Kovacic still ruled out

THOMAS TUCHEL has declared Mason Mount as fit to start against Real Madrid following his injury scare against Fulham on Saturday. The Chelsea playmaker landed awkwardly on his back during the 2-0 win against the Cottagers after colliding with Mario Lemina.
Chelsea could start the same side that drew 1-1 against Real Madrid last week
But the England international, 22, is in contention to start, with Tuchel declaring that only Mateo Kovacic will be unavailable due to a hamstring injury.
And Blues fans will be delighted to see Antonio Rudiger to possibly start in the Champions League semi-final second leg after being forced out last week with a facial injury.
Commenting on team news ahead of Wednesday’s tie at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel said: “Mateo will not be in the squad, Toni will play with a mask, because he trained with a mask.
“Everybody else is in training today. Everybody is available except for Mateo Kovacic.”
And the German gaffer hinted that he could name an unchanged team from the side that started in the 1-1 draw against Madrid at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.
He added: “I have my ideas in my mind. But I’m too long in the business that anything can happen in the last training, any situation can change my mind.
“I need another sleep and tomorrow I will decide my line-up and give it to my team first.
“This is the way it is. From performance, there’s no reason to do too many changes.”

Should Tuchel name the same team, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy would keep his place between the sticks.
And a back three would consist of Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Rudiger.
Cesar Azpilicueta and Ben Chilwell would be deployed as the full-backs, with N’Golo Kante and Jorgino to start in the middle of the pitch.
Mount would then feature in a more advanced role, with Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner to lead the line.
It would mean that Kai Havertz – who banged in a double against Fulham – would have to settle for a place on the bench.
This is another way of how the Blues could start against Los Blancos on Wednesday

Chelsea want to extend Thomas Tuchel’s contract as manager after flying start to his Stamford Bridge reign

CHELSEA are reportedly ready to extend manager Thomas Tuchel’s contract. The Premier League giants appointed the German in January after sacking Frank Lampard.

Tuchel was only given an 18 month contract
But now, according to Sky Sports Italy journalist Angelo Mangiante, the Blues are ready to extend that.
Mangiante posted on Twitter that ‘contacts already started and they are very close’.
Chelsea are currently occupying fourth spot in the league table, three points ahead of West Ham in fifth.
Tuchel has lost just one Prem game in 15 since taking charge – a bizarre 5-2 loss at home to West Brom.
It was previously reported that Tuchel told Chelsea he needed the freedom to make any changes he wanted before agreeing to take over.
ESPN reports the German told Stamford Bridge chief Marina Granovskaia he needed to be free to pick and drop players as he sees fit.
The former PSG boss was clear in his desire for free reign over team selection.

Tuchel is said to have wanted to be able to put big-money signings Kai Havertz and Timo Werner on the bench when he felt appropriate.
And he also wanted to bring back Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso after the pair were axed by predecessor Frank Lampard.
Tuchel started his Tuesday press conference by congratulating the club’s women’s team for reaching the Champions League final.
Emma Hayes’ side beat Bayern Munich 4-1 in their semi-final second leg for a 5-3 aggregate victory.
They face Barcelona in the final.

Real Madrid playmaker Eden Hazard wants to play for Fenerbahce before retiring, says former chief of Turkish giants

EDEN HAZARD has vowed to play for Turkish giants Fenerbahce before he retires, according to former club chief Hasan Cetinkaya. The Belgium talisman, who moved to Real Madrid from Chelsea in a £150million deal in 2019, has told Cetinkaya he will play for the Turkish Super Lig side one day.
Eden Hazard has vowed to play for Fenerbahce before his career ends, claims the club’s former chief
Last year, Cetinkaya revealed: “Eden Hazard is an old friend of mine, I’ve known him since he was 15 or 16 years old and still played for Lille.
The former Fener supremo spoke to Turkish sports news website Ajansspor: “He had incredible sympathy for Fenerbahce and gave me his word: ‘Hasan, one day I’ll play for Fenerbahce, I just do not know when that will be.”
Cetinkaya, who is now vice-president of Belgian club Waterloo, revealed that Fenerbahce were interested in Hazard, 30, at the start of his career.
He revealed that Fenerbahce were interested in Hazard at the start of his career.
He said: “He was 16 when he played for Lille, they had him, Gervinho and Sow, but we could only attract Sow to us.
“And then Hazard reached a different dimension, he was one of the greatest talents in Europe, and I wish he had, time will tell, Eden Hazard will one day play for Fenerbahce.”

Hazard can expect a busy end to his career after also promising Chelsea that he will return once his work at Real Madrid is done.
And when told by well known Chelsea fan Frank Khalid that the West Londoners miss him, Hazard replied: “When I finish here I’ll come back.”
The winger has endured a horror stint at the Bernabeu after suffering a spate of frustrating injuries, but returned to face his former side in the Champions League earlier this week.
