POOR Ross Barkley can’t seem to do anything right at the moment. Not only is the midfielder nowhere near the Chelsea starting line-up, he was also left red-faced on the Blues bench during the 6-0 hammering against Southampton.

Boss Thomas Tuchel was afforded the luxury of being able to bring Thiago Silva off just after the hour mark due to the hefty six-goal cushion.
The veteran defender will no doubt be wrapped in cotton wool ahead of the crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid on Tuesday.
And as Silva made his way off the pitch at St. Mary’s, he high-fived Kai Havertz on the bench after a job well done.

He even leant in closer to try and high-five Silva, but the Brazilian was far too focused on waving towards the Chelsea away fans who were singing his name.
Even after Silva stopped waving, he still failed to put Barkley out of his misery.

He was pulling the strings in there for Chelsea and the one to always get us up the pitch fast with his direct style of play and progressiveness.
Chelsea just look better when he is in the team.
Marcos Alonso – 9
Got the opening goal with a nice finish and he continued to have a positive influence on the game and our possession keeping.
He wasn’t really tested defensively but his attacking contributions were excellent.
Mason Mount – 10
A fresh haircut and bang, the old Mason Mount is back! When I say old, he’s looked off the boil in recent weeks.
But today, he was back to his usual top quality and he really had an influence on all of our positive attacking moves.
Took his goal very well too with a nice strike from outside the box.

Timo Werner – 10
He was like a new man. Or more accurately, like the RB Leizpzig Timo Werner who we all through we had signed.
He’s struggled at Chelsea a lot, but this afternoon he was one of the best players on the pitch.
He was hungry, direct, was unfortunate not to have a hat-trick to his name in the first half, and he was totally up for this game.
Kai Havertz – 9
Continued his fine form again today and he was on fire and full of confidence, providing flicks, tricks, and also got on the scoresheet once again.
Worked very well alongside his fellow German up top and he was involved in all of Chelsea’s good possession play and attacks.
Very good performance and he was afforded a well-earned rest coming off at half-time.

Christian Pulisic for Havertz (HT) – 7
He came on and was very lively and very involved, lacked the same sort of impact as the rest of the attackers who were on absolute fire though.

But there is something about Southampton that seems to appeal to the German who has failed to live up to his £45 million price tag for 18 unspectacular months.
We’re talking relatively here mind you. Werner’s only league goal this season prior to this game was against Saints way back on October 2.
Self-styled “Turbo Timo” has been pretty tortoise-like notching up the goals since his arrival in July 2020.

Werner also hit both posts, the crossbar and was involved in virtually every move forward from which rejuvenated Chelsea threatened to score.

With the exception of Forster, Southampton were a disgrace to their shirts.

Werner got his second in the 59th minute after Forster’s heroic one-handed clearance from N’Golo Kante was not picked up and cleared by his defence which had gone missing in action.
Mount got the sixth in the 5th minute and from then on Chelsea strolled around in the Spring sunshine and boss Thomas Tuchel used the opportunity to substitute key players in preparation for next week’s Champions League trip to Madrid.
With Chelsea 3-1 down from their first leg, a result like this will be a huge boost to Tuchel. But it is unlikely to frighten Real Madrid.
After all, it says more about Southampton than anything else if Werner can score not once but twice against them. More
