CHELSEA produced a top performance but it was not enough to beat a Real Madrid side that just knows how to win.There were a number of standout displays with Antonio Rudiger, Mateo Kovacic and Reece James the pick of the bunch.

Mason Mount continued his good form with a stylish finish before crossing in from a corner to assist Antonio Rudiger.
Timo Werner then produced a brilliant solo goal to put Chelsea 3-0 up and it was a well deserved lead.
Chelsea even had a Marcos Alonso strike ruled out for handball before Werner struck but Real managed to dig their way out of a hole.
A sublime cross from Luka Modric allowed Rodrygo to equalise on aggregate before Karim Benzema popped up in extra-time to head in a winner.

Started on the right-hand side of central defence and got done by a lovely bit of skill by Vinicius Jr early on.
But he did not let a booking affect him and did an outstanding job of containing the tricky Brazilian.
He supported Ruben Loftus-Cheek well with much of Chelsea’s good play coming down their right flank – and came close to scoring with a snapshot in the second half.

Kept Real dangerman Karim Benzema quiet for the most part and provided the experience and leadership required in the absence of captain Cesar Azpilicueta.
He did, however, play a weak ball out from defence which resulted in Real’s winner – though he could blame N’Golo Kante for not reacting quickly enough.
Antonio Rudiger – 9
Had a relatively comfortable night with Real offering little in attack until going 3-0 down.
He powered home a header from a corner to level things up on aggregate and also made an amazing last-ditch interception to stop Vinicius going through on goal.
Could have kept a closer eye on Benzema when he scored his extra-time winner.
Marcos Alonso – 7
Will feel rightly aggrieved after his goal was ruled out for handball after a consultation with VAR.
Got into the game more as it progressed but could have been a little tighter to Rodrygo when he scored Real’s equaliser.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 6
A bold move from Tuchel to pick the midfielder at right wing-back but he provided a threat with some powerful runs from deep.
Faded as the game went on but continued to help James deal with Vinicius.
N’Golo Kante – 5
An improvement on his first leg performance when he was substituted at half-time but still a little sloppy in possession at times.
Never was that more evident when he carelessly lost the ball in the build-up to Real’s first goal – allowing Carlo Ancelotti’s side to find that all-important aggregate equaliser.
Arguably a little to blame for Real’s winner too as he was a little flat-footed when waiting to receive Silva’s pass out from the back, with Vinicius breaking before assisting Benzema for the winner.
Matteo Kovacic – 8
He was the heartbeat of Chelsea’s midfield as Blues dominated possession at the Bernabeu.
Kept his side ticking over and dominated a Real midfield consisting of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro – a complete reverse of the first leg.
Mason Mount – 8
Finished off a brilliant Chelsea move in spectacular fashion to give his team the lead in the 15th minute.
Also provided the corner for Rudiger’s goal and never stopped pressing when Real were on the ball.
Timo Werner – 8
Assisted Mount for the opening goal and posed a threat not just with his pace but with his running on the ball.
Was quieter in the second half until he scored a stunning solo effort, beating two players before firing past Thibaut Courtois.
Kai Havertz – 7
Quiet in the first half despite all of Chelsea’s possession but his movement caused problems and allowed space for Mount and Werner to exploit.
Could have done a little better with a half chance when played through in the second half by Mount.
He also missed a fantastic chance with a free header late on in extra-time.

Had two golden chances to win it late on in normal time but twice volleyed over the bar from close range.
Hakim Ziyech (for Kante, 100′) – 4
Booked not long after coming on and did not make the impact Tuchel hoped for when he decided to bring him on.

Saw plenty of the ball but was unable to create anything with Real sitting deep in defence for the second half of extra-time.
The ball fell to him nicely twice in the box but his first effort was blocked and the second he dragged wide.

In the end the trophy they won last year had to be prised from their fingers by the remarkable Karim Benzema, whose extra-time strike finally settled this extraordinary match.
Yet Chelsea were still able to leave the Bernabeu with their heads held high after giving the 13-time European champions the absolute fright of their lives.
Left with a seemingly impossible task after last week’s home leg, they reached the very summit of football’s Mount Everest with a performance which even their own manager thought was beyond them.
Tuchel had written off his team’s chances after that 3-1 defeat. But he clearly underestimated the character and resilience of a group of players who simply refused to relinquish their grip on the European Cup.

And if we thought that Sunday’s Manchester City versus Liverpool clash was as good as this game could get, well last night we were all forced to think again.
Because not only did Chelsea overturn that two-goal deficit, with ten minutes to go they were actually leading on aggregate and had one foot in the semi-finals.
But in the end their Herculean efforts proved just too much to withstand as the runaway LaLiga leaders snatched victory from the jaws of a humiliating defeat.
Tuchel had complained before this game that his team were at a physical disadvantage as a consequence of playing more games than any other team in Europe and not having the luxury of five subs per game.

Yet it wasn’t until the 83rd minute of this monumental slog that he made his first change as his players finally ran out of steam.

All of a sudden we had a real game on our hands as anxious Madridistas were doubting their team’s prospects for the first time.
Chelsea were growing in confidence, dominating possession and really starting to believe that it was not mission impossible after all.
After all, it was only three weeks ago that Barcelona had triumphed here 4-0, so winning by two certainly wasn’t out of the question for a team of Chelsea’s pedigree.

Doubting Thomas thought he was in dreamland when Marcos Alonso stuck another absolute rocket into the top corner after 62 minutes.
Marciniak had no doubts that it was a goal and pointed straight to the centre circle.
But eagle-eyed David Alaba had spotted that the ball had flicked Alonso’s hand before he struck and after a lengthy VAR check the goal was agonisingly ruled out.

No matter, though, because 13 minutes later Werner twisted his way past Casemiro and Alaba to beat Courtois again. And this time no one was going to deny Chelsea.
Now all they needed to do was to see out the final 15 minutes and they were through to the semi-finals.
But the proud Spanish giants were not going out without a fight and ten minutes from time Modric’s exquisite ball with the outside of his boot was volleyed home by substitute Rodrygo.
It was an absolute body blow for the flagging Blues who were now faced with the prospect of a further 30 minutes of extra-time to stretch them to their mental and physical limits.
And inevitably it was Benzema, the scorer of a Stamford Bridge hat-trick last week, who finally delivered the coup de grace when he took advantage of Rudiger’s slip to head home Vinicius’ 95th minute cross.
It was a brilliant end to a magnificent match. And no matter what happens in the remaining games of this competition, nothing is going to top this one.

But VAR left them shattered and furious after claiming the Spaniard had handled the ball in the build-up in a major reprieve for Real Madrid.
N’Golo Kante had collected the ball in the middle of the park, before spraying the ball wide to a rampaging Alonso on the left.

MALMO’S teenage sensation Hugo Larsson has explained why he rejected a move to Chelsea. The 17-year-old had been training with the club’s academy and even scored in a match but decided not to sign a deal with the Champions League holders.

Larsson told Expressen about his experience and reason for staying in Sweden.
He said: “It’s clear that it was a great experience to go and play with Chelsea.
“I trained with the team and also got to go to a tournament in Belgium. I also scored a goal.

Morris told Ladbrokes: “Conor Gallagher is certainly up there as far as Young Player of the Season is concerned.
“His performances – not only this season at Crystal Palace, but also at Swansea and West Brom – have been unbelievable.

“I hope they bring him in with the intention of playing him, though; don’t just bring him back and keep hold of him to play him for 10 or 15 games, you’ve got to look to the future.

But the Blues know just how dangerous Gallagher can be and have prevented him from coming back to haunt them when they face the Eagles in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.
Palace’s request to be given permission to pick Gallagher for next week’s clash was refused by the Blues.
