Chelsea target Edouard Mendy was unemployed at 22 and almost quit football after snub by a League One club

CHELSEA are looking to continue their remarkable spending spree this summer by adding Edouard Mendy to their squad.
The giant Senegal goalie, who stands at 6ft 6in tall, is on the verge of joining the West London giants for £25million, according to reports.

Should the deal go through, it would complete a remarkable turn-around in the life of the 28-year-old stopper.
It was only six years ago that Mendy, the cousin of Real Madrid star Ferland Mendy, was unemployed after his contract expired with French fourth tier side Cherbourg.
And after a deal with a League One club collapsed, it appeared his days as a professional footballer were over.
    ON THE SCRAP HEAP
Mendy was just 22 when his deal with Cherbourg expired.

Wanting to take on a new challenge, he was offered contracts by other clubs.
But it was the temptation of moving across the channel to an unknown League One side that seemed the most attractive.
The player’s former agent gave him assurances a deal was done, however Mendy soon discovered the job offer didn’t work out.
It left the promising talent club-less, unemployed and queuing at the job centre.

Away from the game for the year, Mendy was forced to consider quitting football to do something else.

    8

With his future up in the air, Mendy contemplated quitting the game
“For a football player or anybody else, being unemployed is like getting slapped across the face,” Mendy told So Foot magazine.
“Repeated failures leave marks on you, and you start thinking that maybe you are not made for it.”
    REDEMPTION
With his confidence severely dented, Mendy returned to the club where it all began for him as a youth player, Le Havre.
He trained religiously for a year, unpaid, until a former team-mate told him that Marseille were looking for a goalkeeper to replace reserves Julien Fabri and Brice Samba, who were sent out on loan.
Mendy scored a trial with the 1993 European Cup winners and was signed as a fourth choice keeper.
There, he worked with French international Steve Mandanda and played in the B side.
“I reached a new level in Marseille,” he revealed.
“I trained with the pros throughout the year, which you normally would not expect as a No. 4 ‘keeper.

“It was proof that I performed well and made all the efforts required. It was a rewarding year.
“Training alongside players like Lassana Diarra, Abou Diaby… and winning duels against Steven Fletcher or Michy Batshuayi brought a lot to me.”
    MAKING OF THE MAN
In search of regular playing time, Mendy moved to Ligue 2 outfit Reims in 2016.
It was time for him to finally make his breakthrough in the game.
When first-choice keeper Johann Carrasso was sent off, Mendy got his opportunity.
Seven games and three clean sheets later, a star was born.
Mendy became first-choice in 2017-18, and helped the club gain promotion to Ligue 1.
    RENNES TO CHELSEA?
It was only last summer that Mendy signed for Rennes for a fee of £3.5million.

And his rise has been rapid.
He helped his new club finish in the top three in France’s top division last season.
More importantly, Rennes qualified for the Champions League thanks to his exploits.

Commanding between the sticks, late-developer Mendy kept nine clean sheets in their incredible season.
In fact, he was so good Chelsea club legend Petr Cech is said to have told the Blues to pull out all the stops to sign him.
Could he be the final piece in the jigsaw to make Frank Lampard’s men genuine title contenders?

Chelsea trolled by Crystal Palace over horrendous new kit that looks exactly like London rivals… and fans hate it too

CHELSEA have been trolled by Crystal Palace over their new third kit which looks exactly like the Eagles’ home strip.
The Blues released images of their new alternative strip and fans online were quick to slam the red and blue stripes which would look far more at home at Selhurst Park.

Fans have slammed Chelsea’s new kit saying it looks just like Crystal Palace’s home strip

    3

    3

Palace were quick to troll the Blues’ ‘It’s a London Thing’ hashtag
Chelsea shared photos of the new kit alongside a caption that read: “Meet a new legacy. The 2020-21 @nikefootball third kit is here!
“One for the sneakerheads, inspired by the 1990s Ultramarine Air Max 180 and classic shirts of the past!
    “Available 10.09.20. #ItsAChelseaThing.”
But Palace were clearly not impressed by the new slogan and cut them down in one fell swoop with a hilarious rebuttal.

They quote tweeted the post and simply wrote: “#It’sNotThoughIsIt.”
The post received more than 41,000 likes and fans piled on in the comments too.
One simply wrote: “Are you Palace in disguise?”
Another tweeted: “Wanted to be like Barcelona but ended up like Crystal Palace.”

And Nathan added: “Surprised their isn’t an eagle on it.”
Although most fans were taking shots at the new strip, one Leeds fan quipped: “To be fair, it’s the only way Crystal Palace will see anything north of 12th place this season is by Chelsea wearing their kit.”
Chelsea released their away kit on July 7 and that got a bad rap too with supporters saying it looks more like pyjamas than a football shirt.

Chelsea star Mason Mount’s dad slams ‘bulls***’ claims son unhappy with Kai Havertz transfer as he faces battle for spot

MASON MOUNT’S dad has slammed reports claiming his son is annoyed by the arrival of Kai Havertz as “bulls***”.
The German playmaker joined Chelsea for a cut-price £70million from Bayer Leverkusen on Friday.

Big things are expected of the 21-year-old, who was personally brought in by Blues owner Roman Abramovich.
There has been much talk over where Havertz will slot in at Stamford Bridge, whether it will be behind Timo Werner or on the wings.
And Bild journalist Christian Falk claimed on Twitter that Havertz will be competing with Mount for a starting spot – much to the frustration of the England international.
He said: “Havertz is already searching for a house in London.

“Because of Havertz his mate Timo Werner can imagine to play at the wings.
“Mason Mount is not happy that he has a expensive rival at his position.”
But his comments were laughed off by Mount’s dad Tony, who replied to the tweet by posting a number of laughing face emojis.

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Bull💩
    — Tony Mount (@Mounty57) September 6, 2020

He even labelled the suggestion by Falk as “bull” alongside a poo emoji, indicating the ex-Derby loanee will still have a vital role under Frank Lampard.

Mount has enjoyed two seasons under the tutelage of Lampard – first on loan at Pride Park – before impressing in West London during the 2019-20 campaign.
The 21-year-old featured in an incredible 53 games last term – chipping in with eight goals and six assists.

Chelsea will offer Michy Batshuayi new deal before loan transfer with Palace, West Brom and Newcastle keen

CHELSEA will give Michy Batshuayi a pay hike and then find him a shop window with a loan deal.
The Belgian striker, 26, is to be offered an extension to avoid him walking away for nothing next summer.

No clubs who can afford Batshuayi have shown an interest in this window, so Chelsea hope by giving him a further year he can go out and increase his value.
The terms could see Batshuayi get a £15,000 rise to £100k-a-week — a lot of money for a player down the pecking order under manager Frank Lampard.
However, any club taking him on loan would be asked to pick up the tab and pay most of that salary for a season.
The news has put Crystal Palace, West Brom and Newcastle on alert.

They could not afford to buy him but now they could loan him.
Batshuayi has been at Palace on loan before and they have a strong chance of getting him.
But they are also in for team-mate Conor Gallagher and Prem rules mean they cannot take both on temporary deals.

That could open the door for Leeds, who are pushing to take England Under-21 midfielder Gallagher who is likely to go out for games once he signs a new contract.

Elland Road transfer dealer Victor Orta is keen on him and there may be a better chance of a start at Leeds than at Palace.
But chief Marcelo Bielsa has taken players in the past and left them out.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was the one who pushed for Kai Havertz transfer and not boss Frank Lampard

CHELSEA owner Roman Abramovich reportedly took control in the transfer deal to bring Kai Havertz to Stamford Bridge.
The 21-year-old joined from Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year deal on Friday in a move believed to be worth in the region of £70million.

Blues owner Roman Abramovich was reportedly desperate to land the German playmakerCredit: Getty Images – Getty
And according to the Express, Abramovich took the wheel instead of boss Frank Lampard in conducting business as he pushed to sign Havertz.
They claim that the Russian billionaire and the Blues board were desperate to secure the signing of the German playmaker this summer.
With other potential suitors such as Real Madrid not having the funds to sign Havertz this window due to the coronavirus pandemic, Chelsea wanted to land the player now.
And fans of the West London club will be hoping Havertz doesn’t flatter to deceive like Andriy Shevchenko.

The Express add that the former Ukrainian striker was the last big-money signing that Abramovich pushed for regardless of how the manager felt.
After banging in 172 goals in 296 games for AC Milan, Shevchenko scored just 23 goals in 77 matches for the Blues.
And Abramovich will be delighted that they managed to sign Havertz for £20m less than Leverkusen’s asking price.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia – dubbed ‘the most powerful woman in football’ – has been influential in transfer negotiations.

One of Abramovich’s most-trusted allies, the 45-year-old managed to recoup £175million for David Luiz, Oscar and Alvaro Morata.
And Chelsea will also end up banking £143m from selling Eden Hazard to Los Blancos – £13m more than what was originally expected.

Jamie Redknapp tips Thiago Silva to be Chelsea’s best transfer ahead of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz

THIAGO SILVA could be Chelsea’s best transfer of the summer, according to Jamie Redknapp.
The Sky pundit heaped praise on his cousin Frank Lampard for bringing the Brazilian in and reckons he could prove more valuable than other new signings Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz.

    2

Thiago Silva could be Chelsea’s best transfer of the summer window

    2

That is according to Jamie Redknapp – cousin of Chelsea boss Frank Lampard
Silva, 35, signed a one-year deal with the option of another year at Stamford Bridge last week and Redknapp can’t wait to see him in action.
He said: “That might end up being the best signing for them because of his experience.
“It might not be the most exciting one but with their young players, sometimes you need someone that can come in and just calm everyone down.
“He’s got amazing know-how, playing at the top throughout his career for the likes of PSG and AC Milan.

“He’s a winner, he’s played in the Champions League and captained his country.
“He will be a brilliant addition. It will be interesting to see who Lampard sees as his best defensive partner.”
Werner, 24, arrived in a £53million – including add-ons – transfer from RB Leipzig in June and has already scored his first Chelsea goal in their friendly at Brighton.
Ziyech’s £36.5million deal was confirmed in February but saw the 27-year-old remain with Ajax until the end of the campaign.

And Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz, 21, has reportedly left Germany’s Nations League camp to complete his £90m switch to the Blues.
And Redknapp has been impressed with their business so far.
He added: “Chelsea are on the verge of building something special.
“It will take time and there will be ups and downs.

“You’ve got Ziyech who can play on the wings and Havertz is a super talent who can play in a number of positions.
“He would bring goals, pace, ability. That would be a great signing, not just for now but for the future.
“It would be a great addition to what is already an exciting team.”

Kai Havertz ‘had heart set on Real Madrid transfer and is only joining Chelsea after coronavirus scuppered plans’

INCOMING Chelsea signing Kai Havertz reportedly favoured a move to Real Madrid before the coronavirus pandemic scuppered his dream.
The Bayer Leverkusen playmaker is closing in on a £90million switch to Stamford Bridge after the 21-year-old completed a medical.

But it has been claimed that the Blues were not the German’s first choice, with the player favouring a move to the Bernabeu.
According to Marca, Havertz was desperate to link up with Los Blancos, and is only joining Chelsea as Real do not have the funds to land him.
They state that the plan was for Havertz to sign for Madrid this summer, but that soon became an impossibility due to Covid-19.
It has been suggested that Bayern Munich also came in for him, but he rejected them out of his desire to wear the famous white jersey.

And as a result of Real being unable to afford him, Havertz had no choice but to sit down with the West London outfit and negotiate a deal.
During the talks, it is said that he was convinced to join the ambitious Chelsea project.
His transfer to Chelsea is now expected to be officially announced in the coming days.

Kai Havertz has agreed a mind-blowing deal with Chelsea

Havertz is in line to become the club’s top earner, with it understood he will pocket £310,000-a-week.

He will link up with German compatriots Timo Werner and Antonio Rudiger, with the latter stating he has helped persuade him to join.
Rudiger said: “I made my contribution to Timo. I hope that it will happen with Kai too.”

Inter’s transfer ‘assault’ for Chelsea star Kante can only begin after offloading flops with Eriksen’s future in doubt

INTER MILAN are reportedly planning a transfer ‘assault’ on Chelsea for star midfielder N’Golo Kante.
But Antonio Conte will have to flog some of his squad first if he is to be reunited with the French midfielder.

CalcioMercato reports that Joao Mario, Dalbert Henrique and Ivan Perisic are the three most at risk of being shown the exit.
But former Tottenham ace Christian Eriksen, Milan Skriniar and Marcelo Brozovic are all fighting for their Inter futures.
Kante reportedly wants to fight for his spot at Chelsea despite interest elsewhere.

Frank Lampard’s side are reportedly prepared to sell the midfielder for £80million this summer.

But Kante has no intention to leave Chelsea as he is settled at the club, according to Goal.
The 29-year-old wants to cement his spot in the squad after an injury-hit 2019/20 campaign.
He scored three goals in 22 league appearances last term, but failed to make a single assist.
Lampard has not instructed the club to sell Kante despite his huge summer spending spree.

And he showed faith in the Frenchman as he handed him the captain’s armband for the game against Brighton.
Conte signed Kante from Leicester in 2016 while he was in charge at Stamford Bridge.
The Serie A boss has already snapped up Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Eriksen, Ashley Young and Victor Moses from the Premier League.
And another former Prem player in the form of ex-Manchester City ace Aleksandr Kolarov is close to joining the club from Serie A rivals Roma.
