Chelsea wonderkid Charlie Webster, 16, has been labelled the ‘next Jadon Sancho’ and amazed Kevin De Bruyne in KDB Cup

THE future’s bright if you’re a Chelsea fan.
The Blues were enjoying the emergence a number of youth products in their first team earlier this year before coronavirus turned the world upside down.

Tammy Abraham came of age last season, Reece James showed his mettle, Fikayo Tomori revealed his potential, and Billy Gilmour even had the hard-to-please Roy Keane singing his praises.
And now, there’s another name you can add to the list of youngsters hoping to get their chance under Frank Lampard.
England’s Charlie Webster, 16, is a rising star at Stamford Bridge, and is already wanted by Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.
That’s why he’s been dubbed the ‘next Jadon Sancho’.

    MAKING AN IMPRESSION
Last year, at just 15, Webster had Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne wowed by his ability.
The setting was the prestigious KDB Cup – an international U15 tournament named after the Belgium ace – with the midfielder as the guest of honour.
Players from clubs including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and PSG were on show – all desperate to impress.
It was Chelsea that ended up being victorious – beating Racing Genk on penalties after an exciting 2-2 draw.

Star of the show was Webster, and his performances didn’t go unnoticed.

Blues starlet Webster has been called the ‘next Jadon Sancho’

Webster starred at the KDB Cup in 2019

He was awarded player of the tournament – winning a golden ball, as well as a signed De Bruyne shirt.
One feels it could be the first of many awards headed Webster’s way in the future.
    A CULTURED MIDFIELDER
In similar vein to Billy Gilmour, Webster is a cultured midfielder – good on the ball and smart in possession.
However, unlike the Scot who prefers to dictate play from deep – Webster likes to get in the box and score goals.
He started playing football at the Pezzaz Street Soccer academy, which have bases in Wiltshire and Hampshire, before joining Chelsea in 2016 at the age of 12.
Coaches there believe he has a bright future in the game, and in the past Webster has spoken about his football dream.
“Obviously, it’s to play for this brilliant club,” he told a reporter at the KDB Cup after starring for the Blues.

    LEADING BY EXAMPLE
Webster’s qualities have seen him earmarked as a leader.
Last year, he captained England’s U16 team in a match against Republic of Ireland – scoring his first international goal.

He’s also played for the Three Lions’ U17s – coming off the bench in a 4-1 rout over the USA back in February.
And that was the same month Webster made his U18 Premier League debut for Chelsea against Southampton.
With Lampard giving the kids a go and with fixtures coming thick and fast this year, it might not be long before Webster gets the opportunity to impress at first team level.

Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori set to hand Leeds and West Ham transfer snub and join Rennes on loan for the rest of the season

CHELSEA star Fikayo Tomori is set to snub Leeds to join Rennes on loan for the rest of the season.
The 22-year-old defender flourished in his breakthrough campaign last term for the Blues and earned England recognition.

But the arrival of Thiago Silva has pushed him down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are keen to keep hold of the youngster with Frank Lampard still viewing him as one for the future.
However, they are willing to let him leave temporarily in order to get some much-needed game time to further his development.
And talkSPORT’s transfer guru Alex Crooks claims Tomori is heading to the French top-flight – leaving both Leeds United and West Ham disappointed.

He said: “It’s almost certain that he will leave Stamford Bridge on loan next season, he’s only featured in one Premier League or Champions League game this season.
“There was interest from West Ham in the summer, but he walked away from a move to the London Stadium at the eleventh hour on Deadline Day.
“Leeds have also expressed an interest, but I’m told Rennes is now the most likely destination for Tomori.
“They tried to sign him as part of Edouard Mendy’s move to Chelsea and talks have remained ongoing.”

Following impressive loan stints at Brighton, Hull City and Derby, he was handed a chance at Chelsea when Lampard took charge in the summer of 2019.
That October he made his Three Lions debut for Gareth Southgate’s side and made over 20 appearances for the West London outfit.
But he has struggled for action during the current campaign, playing just three times, the last coming in September against Tottenham in the League Cup.

Players from both sides quickly took exception as they squared up on the pitch, with tempers boiling over.
Both players were shown a straight red for their ugly actions.
Drinkwater hasn’t played for Chelsea’s senior side since March 2018 and was left out of the 25-man Premier League squad for 2020-21.

He was loaned out to Aston Villa and Burnley last season, but failed to replicate his top form and was even involved in a horror nightclub brawl in September 2019.

Elsewhere in the thrilling 3-2 PL2 win for Chelsea’s Under-23s, Petr Cech was given a shock start.

Filling in for the rested Lucas Bergstrom – who played for the Under-18s on Saturday – Cech made an error with his first touch.
The veteran stopper played a pass straight out for a corner, with Spurs taking the lead from the resulting set-piece.
Cech conceded 15 minutes later, but managed to keep Tottenham at bay from then on to ensure the Blues completed an incredible comeback.

But the strangest moment came with 15 minutes on the clock.
Chasing all three points, Kante seemingly completely forgot how to play football.
Mason Mount took a throw-in from the left aimed at Kante, with the England man keen to get on with it.
But the France star bizarrely caught the ball, with Wolves players quickly protesting and a free-kick being awarded to the hosts.

Olivier Giroud had earlier given Chelsea a lead to keep his red-hot run of form alive.
But Daniel Podence equalised with Frank Lampard’s side lacking their edge in the second-half.

And Neto would go on to snatch all three points for Wolves as he rifled home a thunderbolt of a left-footed strike past the outstretched arms of Edouard Mendy.
The defeat meant Chelsea missed the chance to go top of the Premier League after Tottenham and Liverpool both dropped points at the weekend.

Blues boss Lampard later reflected on the game, saying he was ‘very disappointed’ after throwing away three points.
Lampard told Amazon Prime: “We should see the game out at 1-0.
“If you’re not playing well, don’t allow counter-attacks and we did.
“Performance is what gives you results. We we were playing very well and maybe the lads think ‘we’re playing well’.

Chelsea player ratings: Christian Pulisic dangerous but Kai Havertz must take risks after last-gasp Wolves defeat

CHELSEA were left frustrated as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat away to Wolves on Tuesday night.
Olivier Giroud once again get on the scoreboard for the Blues, but how did the rest of the team stack up?

Olivier Giroud’s goal helped earn Chelsea a point at WolvesCredit: Ryan Browne-The Times

Here’s how SunSport’s Simon Phillips rated the boys in Blue at Molineux.
    Edouard Mendy – 6/10
Was beaten by a deflection for Wolves’ equaliser but was largely untested other than that.
Good on the ball as usual.
    Reece James – 5
He was marked well by Wolves in the first half, who did well to block his dangerous crosses. It was largely a quiet game for James on the right.

Few bad passes giving the ball away as well, not a good night for him.
    Kurt Zouma – 5
Hit the bar with a fantastic header in the first half and was so unlucky not to score.
Poor at the back from him though on both Wolves goals.
⚽ Read our Chelsea live blog for the very latest news from the Bridge

    Thiago Silva – 5
Couple of weak passes and a poor header that led to a goal from Wolves made it one of his poorer games in a Chelsea shirt.
Still showed his usual sense of calm on the ball.
    Ben Chilwell – 6
Good progressive movements with the ball down the left and backed Pulisic up well.
He got a good assist crossing in for Giroud to score and one of Chelsea’s rare better performers on the night.

Giroud’s goal was the only thing for Chelsea to celebrate on the dayCredit: Ryan Browne-The Times

    N’Golo Kante – 8
He was absolutely everywhere on the pitch and had an outstanding first half.
Second half he dropped off slightly but still put in a great showing.
    Mason Mount – 6
Wasn’t his best game in a Chelsea shirt but he was full of his usual energy and was tough in the tackle.
Didn’t do enough on the ball to help a stuttering Chelsea attack.
    Kai Havertz – 4
Struggled once again in the first half and played like someone that lacks confidence and is afraid to take risks.
He didn’t do a lot better in the second half and looked rather out of his depth at times.
He was once again rightfully subbed off for Mateo Kovacic.

Havertz must start taking risks if he is to rediscover his top formCredit: AFP

Pulisic was Chelsea’s best player on a mediocre night for the BluesCredit: AP:Associated Press
    Christian Pulisic – 8
Came out absolutely firing and was Chelsea’s most dangerous player.
He was unfortunately much quieter in the second half when he was switched over to the right wing.
It wasn’t a wise move really, even though it did get Timo Werner into the match a bit more.
    Timo Werner – 5
Wasn’t seeing the ball hardly at all out on the right in the first half.
But he made a good run to help Chelsea score their first goal early in the second half and he was slightly livelier, but another poor game overall.
    Olivier Giroud – 6
Dodgy touch at times and wasn’t really doing enough with the ball in the first half.
But he popped up early in the second half in typical style to volley home Chilwell’s cross before being tken off
    Subs
Mateo Kovacic for Havertz (71 mins) – 6
Good energy but a few wasted shots.
Tammy Abraham for Giroud (71 mins) – 6
    Menacing but not enough impact.

Chelsea verdict: Frank Lampard needs creative sparks to step up after Wolves’ deserved comeback win

TUESDAY night was another frustrating one for Frank Lampard and his Chelsea side.
They failed to take advantage of good early possession and lost to a stubborn Wolves side who are struggling in the league.

Kai Havertz struggled mightily on Tuesday evening at MolineuxCredit: AP:Associated Press

Chelsea slumped to defeat after conceding a late goal – and you cannot say they deserved anything more.
Wolves deserved the win from their second-half display, with Chelsea at fault for not killing off the game in the first 45 minutes.
Unfortunately for Lampard, only one of his creative sparks was at it – and it has now been the same for the last two matches.
Christian Pulisic had a good game in Chelsea blue and he was behind anything good they did, particularly in the first half.

⚽ Read our Chelsea live blog for the very latest news from the Bridge
But for the second game running, the same thing cannot be said about Chelsea’s two new German internationals, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.
The latter looks short on confidence and plays with a fear to try anything, or take any risks.
He has come under some premature criticism from some Chelsea fans who are writing him off already – which I believe is a mistake and rather unfair.

However, Monday night’s performance is only going to fuel further criticism and he really needs to come out of his shell soon and start putting in the performances we know he can.

But Havertz is still only 21 and arrived in a new league in a new country – the fans must be patient.
It is a similar story with Werner, although he is still being asked to play out of position on the left flank where it just does not suit him at all.
Even still, he is lacking the confidence to try something special or even just something different.
As a result Chelsea have lost two players who are considered creators.
They weren’t the only poor performers… Chelsea had a few of those on the night and it was another off-game for many.
A few of the players need to hang their heads tonight after that poor showing.
When you are a team that controls possession regardless and looks to break a team down, you really need your creators to turn up and do their job.
