Chelsea post £36m PROFIT for 2019-20 despite coronavirus crisis thanks to Hazard and Morata sales and lowering wage bill

CHELSEA made a profit of £36million in the 2019-20 season despite the coronavirus pandemic, the latest figures have shown.
The footballing world took an almighty hit last season due to Covid, with many clubs even forcing players to take a pay-cut.

Chelsea’s 2019/20 financial results covered a season when they finished 4th in the Premier League, were beaten in the FA Cup final and reached the last 16 of the Champions League, but their finances were adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Some thoughts follow #CFC
    — Swiss Ramble (@SwissRamble) February 15, 2021

But Chelsea managed to make a profit of £36m thanks to a couple of huge sales and their continued work in lowering their wage bill, according to Swiss Ramble.
While the figures are encouraging, the reports claim the Blues were on course for a ‘record revenue’ but for Covid knocking £40m off the final figure.
The Stamford Bridge outfit were hit hard in the pocket due to the loss of matchday revenue – with games played behind closed doors – as well as sales of club merchandise.
Roman Abramovich has poured £1.3billion into the club since taking over in the summer of 2003 – £1.1bn of which has gone towards buying new players.

However, in recent seasons Chelsea have been more savvy in the transfer markets.
The club may have spent over £200million last summer on the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell, but the foundations were alreadty put in place for a mega spree.
In 2019, the Blues sold Eden Hazard to Real Madrid for a fee of £88m, rising to £150m in add-ons.
They also sold Alvaro Morata to Atletico Madrid for a staggering £58.3m in the 2019-20 season to generate the most income of any European club through player sales.

On top of that, Chelsea have been tirelessly working to lower their once sky-high wage bill.
As recently as 2015, the West Londoners had the highest wage bill in England.

They are now down in fourth, below Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United on £283m a year.
In fact, the Blues shaved £2m off their annual wage bill in the 2019-20 season.
Chelsea’s commercial revenue also sits at fourth in the league on £170m – the highest of any London club.
The club were also boosted by qualifying for a Champions League spot for the 2020-21 season – as well as reaching the last-16 in 2019-20 – as well as making it to the FA Cup final.
Overall, Chelsea made the third-highest profit in the Premier League, behind only Liverpool (£42m) and Newcastle (£41m).

How Chelsea could line up against Newcastle with N’Golo Kante playing in ‘double six’ role but Thiago Silva OUT

THOMAS TUCHEL could reshuffle his side for the clash against Newcastle as Chelsea look to climb back into the top four.
Following Liverpool’s defeat to Leicester on Saturday, the Blues know that victory on Monday night will see them leapfrog the Reds into fourth spot.

This is how Chelsea could start against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Monday night

And should the West London outfit beat the Magpies, they will also trail second-placed Manchester United by just four points.
Thomas Tuchel has guided Chelsea to three consecutive Premier League wins having changed the club’s formation to a 3-4-2-1.
The ex-Borussia Dortmund gaffer is expected to use this system yet again, though you can expect a number of changes from the team that beat Barnsley in the FA Cup last week.
After being rested for the clash against the Tykes, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy should be brought back into the starting XI at the expense of Kepa Arrizabalaga.

With Thiago Silva still out injured, skipper Cesar Azpilicueta could yet again be deployed in the back three.
He could be partnered up with Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma, with the Frenchman now fully fit after completing 90 minutes against Barnsley.
Reece James could then feature at right full-back with Callum Hudson-Odoi dropping to the bench.
And Marcos Alonso could see himself start ahead of Ben Chilwell at left full-back as he continues to impress under Tuchel.

The former Paris Saint-Germain boss spoke last week how he plans to play N’Golo Kante in the ‘double six’ role, and he is likely to be given the task of both defending and attacking tonight.
Jorginho could be the man that he plays alongside in the middle of the pitch, with youngster Billy Gilmour losing his place in the team.
Kai Havertz may not be risked for the match against Newcastle having missed the last three games due to injury.
This could see Mason Mount recalled to the starting XI after being rested against Barnsley.
Timo Werner is also in contention to play after recovering from a dead leg, though he may not be leading the line.
Though he hasn’t scored in the top-flight under Tuchel, Abraham fired Chelsea into the FA Cup quarter-finals in a man of the match display.
And Tuchel could stick with the England international – who scored against Newcastle at St James’ Park earlier in the season.

This is another way how the Blues could line up against the Magpies on home soil

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel hails Tammy Abraham for keeping Blues dream alive despite several loans

THOMAS TUCHEL has praised Tammy Abraham for refusing to give up on his Chelsea dream.
Head coach Tuchel particularly admires the striker for beating the club’s loan system that has seen so many other hopefuls fall away.

Academy graduate Abraham was farmed out to Bristol City, Swansea and Aston Villa before finally getting a chance at his parent club in the summer of 2019.
Tuchel said: “I like that he made his way on the loans and overcame obstacles in his career when he went on loan. He always scored for his teams.
“He has the spirit to make it at Chelsea. This is one of the toughest challenges you can face but he is ready.
“It is one of the toughest challenges you can have. It is not always straight up.

“It is sometimes bumpy, sometimes you go out on loan, but I like that the academy boys accept the challenge to make it here.
“I feel that they absolutely want to make it as Chelsea players, not only as Premier League. They want to be Chelsea players.
“This is the spirit we want to feel. When we feel the spirit, combined with that talent, we will push them.”
Abraham scored the goal last Thursday that put Chelsea into the last eight of the FA Cup.

In a difficult tie at Barnsley he also kept them in it with a goalbound clearance.
Tuchel said: “He played well at Barnsley because he did not only score the decisive goal but was also important in defensive set-pieces, he cleared many situations for us with his head.
“He was absolutely ready to suffer and for that he has all my credit.
“It’s a good new start for him to step up and show that he is important for us.”
Public shows of emotion will be commonplace in Tuchel’s regime at Stamford Bridge.
The German is not looking to be everyone’s favourite and says he can be a hard-nut if need be.
But he insists diplomacy will always be the first option and dressing downs will be out in the open.
Tuchel said: “Can I be a shouter? Yes, if it is absolutely necessary.
“If you do it all the time nobody would listen because it becomes a habit and everybody gets used to it.
“So the goal is to stay unpredictable, to be reasonable most of the time.

Abraham was the hero at both ends as Chelsea beat Barnsley to reach the FA Cup quarter-finalsCredit: Getty Images – Getty
“It is important to me to build trust and a relationship that we can rely on and not shouting at people and insult people in front of a group, that is unacceptable.
“But if we have to point out things clearly I am a big fan of doing it on front of the whole group.
“If we have behaviour that does harm to the group, that is causing trouble for the team on the pitch we should tell the players individually.
“But also I believe strongly that the group has to handle it and everybody has to have the personality to swallow some criticism in front of the group.
“I don’t do stuff to be loved by everybody in the dressing room.”
Former Paris Saint-Germain boss Tuchel is holed up in a hotel room with just a cheesy crime novel for company while he settles into his new job and while the Covid pandemic stops his family joining him.
He said: “My family stays for the moment in Paris to finish school with the kids and at the moment it isn’t easy — impossible, in fact — to travel for all of us.
“I miss them a lot and Valentine’s Day was a Zoom meeting family-wise which is pretty sad.
“But you know, we are still privileged, safe and healthy so I don’t want to complain too much.”

Meet Neil Bath, the man behind Chelsea’s youth academy, who has developed £500 million worth of amazing talent

IN 2004, after 12 years with the club, Chelsea named Neil Bath as their academy director.
Little did anyone know at that time, if you fast-forward 17 years, the fruits of his labours would be dominating the football landscape in England and overseas.

Chelsea’s head of youth development Neil Bath has run the club’s brilliant academy since 2004 moulding £500m worth of talentCredit: Getty Images – Getty

When the die-hard Blues fan, now 55, was installed in his new position he set about completely restructuring the West Londoner’s youth programme – with a greater emphasis on procuring and developing the best talent in London and the South-East.
In the last year, the likes of Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi have been testament to his work – heralding a new dawn in the Chelsea first team of talented youngsters.
While another Bath protege, Andreas Christensen made his 100th appearance in a Chelsea shirt in the FA Cup fifth round tie against Barnsley – the first academy graduate since John Terry to achieve that feat.

And just as impressive are the ones who the club let go, including Declan Rice, Nathan Ake, Ryan Bertrand, Tariq Lamptey and more.
German website Transfermarkt, which offers conservative transfer values of players, crunched the numbers.

However, taking into account Hudson-Odoi was subject to a £70million bid from Bayern Munich in 2020, the transfer fees could be at least double those suggested figures.

All in all, through the years, SunSport believes Bath has remarkably overseen the development – on and off the pitch – of around £500million worth of football talent.

    ‘AN INSPIRATION’

In 2020, Bath, now head of youth development, was recipient of the Eamonn Dolan award in recognition of his excellent work in youth development for Chelsea.
His former students queued up to pay their tributes to the man who moulded them into the players they are today for a clip on Chelsea TV.

Mason Mount was one of the many graduates who shared his gratitude for his former coach. “I have nothing but praise to say about Neil,” he said.
“He’s an inspiration to us all – all the academy players coming through.
“I started in the academy when I was six-years-old and he helped me so much.
“The way the academy is set up, the way we work, when we’re younger it puts us in the right mould to push us and keep getting better and better.
“The winning mentality that he brings, it shows in every game we try to play and try to win, and it shows in the youth academy with how many trophies we’ve won.”
While Tammy Abraham revealed his days working with Bath were the “best years of his life”.
“He’s shown so much belief in the young lads and myself, and that’s what drew me to Chelsea,” he divulged.

‘What they are doing at the academy is an amazing job, there’s nothing like it.
“Them years I had in the academy were probably the best years of my life.”
    15 YEARS IN THE MAKING
From the offset, Bath, who began working for Chelsea in 1992 as a part-time schoolboys’ coach, focused on developing Premier League talent, once a significant investment was made into the academy.
In the exciting revamp, the club relocated its youth and first-team training facilities from Harlington to Cobham.
As he put it on Chelsea’s website back in 2019, it was a plan that was 15 years in the making.
“It’s what we’ve been working towards for 15 years since we restructured the Academy in 2004,” he said.
“We’ve always been very clear that our job is not really to win youth trophies year after year, but to develop and produce Chelsea and Premier League players.”
Bath added: “We have to set our ambitions high because we want to be the best football academy in the world and the number one choice for players and parents.”

    PROOF IS IN THE WINNING
Turning rough diamonds into winners is, perhaps, the hardest thing to do in youth football.
But since 2010, Chelsea have proved their academy to be, if not the best, one of the most successful in world football.
They’ve won the FA Youth Cup an astonishing seven times during that period, including five in a row from 2014 – equalling the record of the infamous Busby Babes of Manchester United that stood for 50 years.
Their U18s have been national champions twice and southern champions four times.

While on the European stage, the kids have won the Uefa Youth League twice.
But it’s not all about making first class footballers. Developing the boy into a respectful and educated man is also part of the process.
Bath has spoken in the past how he and his assistant Jim Fraser understand the importance of that.
“We’re currently the reigning Premier League champions from Under-13 to U16, which is a really positive sign,” he said in 2019, “and we’ve just achieved our best-ever GCSE results.

“We need to make sure these boys have all the characteristics and attributes, as footballers and as young men, to follow the likes of Ruben, Mason, Fikayo and Tammy.
“When first-team coaching staff speak so highly about them as people, how they are humble and respectful, how they work so hard every day and set the standards in training, that’s also incredibly nice to hear and reinforces the culture we have built.”
    THE ONES THAT GOT AWAY
Of course, not every young player is going to make it – that is the harsh reality of football.
For every Mount, Loftus-Cheek, Abraham or Christensen there’s a Declan Rice, Eddie Nketiah, Tariq Lamptey and Nathan Ake that had to prove their worth elsewhere, and who would now command huge transfer fees.
But perhaps the biggest star who slipped through the net was Kylian Mbappe.
In 2012, the French superstar, then 13, was invited for a trial to Cobham. However, when he was asked to return for another trial, his mum refused point black.
Daniel Boga, who worked as an international scout at Chelsea until 2014, explained to Goal: “He took a trial and didn’t end up convincing us because he didn’t offer enough defensively.
“So, they asked his mother if he could come back for a second trial and she said no.”
Mbappe was playing at a small club in the suburbs of Paris called Bondy at that time, and his mum Fayza believed he was destined for the top.

Kylian Mbappe was on trial at Chelsea, but didn’t impress Blues coaches

£70m-rated West Ham star Declan Rice was schooled at Chelsea’s academy before he was released in 2014Credit: Rex Features
“My son will not go back, either they sign him now or within five years they’ll have to offer 50 million euros to tie him down,” she said as per Boga.
The reason for Chelsea’s reluctance to sign Mbappe on the spot was that they didn’t see enough quality in him when he wasn’t with the ball.

“Defensively, he wasn’t quite there,” Boga said.
“When he received the ball he was incredible, but without the ball he didn’t do much.”
It goes to show, you have to do more to impress Bath and his team to get your chance to learn at this fame academy.

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba left team-mates stunned by ‘training like a mad man’ in his late 30s lifting weights

DIDIER DROGBA stunned his Galatasaray team-mates by training ‘like a madman’ despite him coming towards the end of his career.
The Chelsea legend joined the Turkish giants from Shanghai Shenhua in 2013.

But the Ivory Coast international was far from ‘winding down’ his career, so says Hellas Verona star Koray Gunter.
The 26-year-old joined Galatasaray a year after Drogba, then 35, had made the switch, and he was impressed by what he saw from the striker.
Speaking to Bild, Gunter said: “When I came to Galatasaray and entered the weight room for the first time, I widened my eyes.
“There was Drogba, who was in his late 30s and had a huge career behind him, training like a madman. He worked more than anyone else.

“I thought ‘that’s how it has to be’.
“After that we met in the weight room more often and sweated a lot together. That was a huge incentive.”
Drogba scored 15 goals in 37 games in all appearances in Turkey.
He ended up playing for an other FOUR years, taking in a second spell with Chelsea as well as turning out for Montreal Impact and Phoenix Rising.

In 2018, Drogba retired from professional football at the age of 40.
Gunter was talking about how he resurrected his football career after a disappointing exit from Borussia Dortmund.
The defender was heralded for big things in the Bundesliga, but managed just TWO MINUTES of action under Jurgen Klopp before leaving for £2.2m to Turkey.
The Drogba name, however, is also set to continue in the sport.
Didier’s son Isaac has signed for Italian Serie D side Folgore Caratese.
A striker like his old man, the younger Drogba is looking to take his first steps into senior football.

Barnsley 0 Chelsea 1: Abraham sets up FA Cup quarter-final tie with Sheff Utd as Blues avoid second Tykes giant-killing

THOMAS TUCHEL is already just one step away from managing a team at Wembley – and he has only been in charge at Chelsea for five matches.
The German coach saw his team struggle past Barnsley and they needed a winner from Tammy Abraham which looked suspiciously offside.

Abraham poked home James’ perfect cross to give Chelsea a second-half leadCredit: Getty Images – Getty

At the very least, without the benefit of VAR, it looked a tight decision.
Now, Tuchel needs only to guide his team past Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge in the next round and already, he will be on his way to the national stadium for the semi-finals.
Yet while last year’s beaten finalists moved forward in the FA Cup, some of Tuchel’s players went backwards in his thinking as there was several poor performances.
There was a first start under Tuchel for his former player at Dortmund, Christian Pulisic, but he chedid little.ches

Also, Hakim Ziyech was given a run-out but all he did was moan the entire evening at the officials.
So at least Abraham took his chance, however controversial, for his 12th goal of the season and fourth in the cup.
Most importantly of all, he delivered a stunning goal-line block to deny Michael Sollbauer.
In fairness to Abraham, he showed plenty of running and hard work to get himself in the good position for his 64th minute strike but from the rest of his team, it was a generally lethargic performance.

Recalled Kepa was forced to make a sharp save in the first-halfCredit: Getty Images – Getty

At half-time, Tuchel made a double change at the back with Reece James and Antonio Rudiger replacing Alonso and Andreas Christensen and there was certainly an improvement as Barnsley had edged the first half.
Under Valerien Ismael, Barnsley are one of the better footballing teams in the Championship even though they are only around mid-table.
And their high-energy football caused Chelsea some problems, particularly at the start and end of the first half.
Chelsea would have been handed a first half penalty had there been VAR after a clear foul on Tammy Abraham. VAR is being used in the FA Cup but only at Premier League grounds.
While the decision may not please everyone, due to the costs of setting up the technology, particularly in the current financial climate, it is understandable when it is not being used at EFL clubs.
Kepa delivered a stunning point blank save to deny Callum Brittain after Alonso switched off.
Although it was a terrific stop, Brittain should still have scored from so close.
Kepa was making his first start for Tuchel with his previous start coming in the 3-1 win over Luton, which proved to be Frank Lampard’s final game.
Surprisingly, Barnsley were camped in the Chelsea half and the Blues’ new coach Tuchel shouting: “Guys, wake up!”
Yet Chelsea should have been handed a penalty when Abraham was fouled by Toby Sibbick.

Neither side was able to break the deadlock in the first-halfCredit: Reuters

Tuchel brought on James at half-time in a tactical tweak, allowing Hudson-Odoi to play further forwardCredit: PA:Press Association
Referee Martin Atkinson signalled that he thought the home defender had won the ball but in fact, Sibbick had only made contact with the England forward.
    It was a definite penalty.
Barnsley caught out Chelsea with a corner just before the break but Brittain’s strike was deflected wide by Victor Adeboyejo
Callum Hudson-Odoi was Chelsea’s brightest spark but his best effort was to curl a shot wide.
Chelsea then showed a rare moment of class when Mason Mount played a neat ball to James and his cross was perfect for Abraham who had a simple tap-in.
It was their first shot of the game, which basically summed up the performance.
But you still have to give credit to Barnsley who are a team on the rise, even though a play-off spot is a little bit too far away this season.
And then they thought sub Sollbauer had given them a leveller before Abraham headed over.
On a freezing night in Yorkshire, Tuchel will have been glad to have left Oakwell with his team still in the competition,
Equally, some of the players did themselves no favours whatsoever.

Chelsea wonderkid Lewis Bate to follow Mount and Gilmour and has been called up to FA Cup squad to face Barnsley

MASON Mount, Billy Gilmour, and Lewis Bate… the Chelsea midfield of the future might read as a homage to their excellent academy that keeps on producing gems.
The latest to earn rave reviews and impress new boss Thomas Tuchel is 18-year-old Bate, who has become an integral part of the Blues U23 side.

Midfielder Bate has impressed new Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel in trainingCredit: Getty Images – Getty

The left-footer, likened to ex-Arsenal star Jack Wilshere, has been drafted into the squad for tonight’s FA Cup fifth round tie at Barnsley.
He has already appeared twice on the bench for Chelsea – when former boss Frank Lampard took the youngster with the first team to Sheffield United and Bayern Munich.
And it appears his time will certainly come soon.
    CLIMBING THROUGH THE RANKS
Bate joined Chelsea at the age of eight, and has steadily progressed through the youth teams.

He was captain of the U15 side that enjoyed success in 2017-18 season, winning the Floodlight Cup.
Then he was pushed into the U18’s for his debut against Arsenal, and also starred for the U19 team.
This season, Bate has been fast-tracked into Chelsea’s successful U23’s, where he has proven to be a key team member in a side riding high in Premier League 2.
He was a standout in the 6-1 demolition of Manchester United in December, alongside fellow wonderkid Tino Anjurin, who made his first Chelsea start in the Champions League tie against Krasnodar earlier this campaign.

Bate was duly named PL2 Player of the Month for December.

In December Bate was named Premier League 2 Player of the Month
WHAT KIND OF PLAYER IS HE?
Standing at 5ft 7inches, with a low centre of gravity and impressive left-foot – Bate has been compared to Hale End academy graduate, Jack Wilshere.
Good in possession, should he lose the ball (on the rare occasion) he races to win it back.
Bate likes to pick up the ball deep from his centre backs, spin 180 degrees and drive forward.
His weight of pass has impressed his coaches, as well as his ability to play difficult passes through the lines.
And he’s not shy of working hard for the team, implementing a hard press on his opponents that’ll warm him to Tuchel, who demands high-energy from his teams.
    IMPRESSING THE FIRST TEAMERS
Since last season, Bate has been included in first team training sessions.

The future for Bate at Chelsea looks brightCredit: Getty Images – Getty
According to The Athletic, Bate was welcomed into the set-up by senior players Cesar Azpilicueta and Olivier Giroud, who were wowed by the teen’s ability.
He was an unused sub in the 3-0 Premier League defeat to Sheffield United, as well as the 4-1 second leg Champions League match against Bayern Munich.

Although he didn’t get any minutes on the pitch, the experience of being with the first team on a match day would’ve done Bate good.
