How Chelsea could line-up at Liverpool with Thiago Silva and Callum Hudson-Odoi doubts but Timo Werner pushing for start

CHELSEA travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool in a massive six-pointer in the race for a top-four spot on Wednesday night.
The Blues sit one point above Jurgen Klopp’s squad in fifth place with both clubs looking to bounce back from a tricky winter.

How Chelsea could line up to take on Liverpool on Wednesday

And Thomas Tuchel has a near-full-strength squad to choose from for the monster clash on Merseyside.
The West Londoners lost the reverse fixture 2-0 in September thanks to a Sadio Mane double.
But facing an injury-ravaged Reds, Chelsea will fancy their chances.
Thiago Silva gave Tuchel a huge boost after returning to training earlier this week.

However, having missed a month – six games in total – with a thigh injury, Wednesday’s game could come too soon.
That means Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are likely to start in a back-three in front of Edouard Mendy.
Kurt Zouma will also push for a place, but has all-but been frozen out under new management having been an ever-present under Frank Lampard.
Marcos Alonso is Tuchel’s preferred option at left-wing-back and could return in place of Ben Chilwell, with the latter playing the full 90 minutes against Manchester United.

Another way Tuchel could send out his troops vs Liverpool

Reece James is likely to start at right-wing-back after Callum Hudson-Odoi limped off during Sunday’s goalless draw.
Hudson-Odoi is expected to be part of the matchday squad though, after Tuchel suggested the knock was minor.
In midfield, N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic are likely to start as the two deeper central players, with Jorginho, Kai Havertz and Billy Gilmour on the bench.
Mason Mount is tipped to be joined by Timo Werner just behind the sole striker, expected to be Tammy Abraham.
Tuchel claimed Werner was merely enjoying a well-earned rest against United and would return to his starting XI at Anfield.
That means Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud will have to settle for a spot on the bench.
Chelsea travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool on Wednesday night, with kick-off 8.15pm.

Furious Chelsea star Reece James demands social media clamp down on racism and sick abusers be ‘named and punished’

ANGRY Reece James has demanded social media companies crack down on racism on their platforms – while ‘naming and punishing’ sick abusers.
The Chelsea defender, as well as sister Lauren, have been subjected to disgraceful taunts this season despite claims from social media companies they are cracking down.

With footballers continuing to face sick abuse in recent weeks, James has spoken out again, demanding abusers be dealt with more firmly.
James told beIN Sport: “It’s terrible that it obviously still happens and I receive the messages that I received.
“It made me very upset and angry when I got them, and I think we can do a lot more to help put an end to it.
“I think media platforms can do more.

“When anything happens, they should be able to help track the person and go from there.
“I think more people are getting racist abuse and it only makes sense to put a stop to it and the people that are capable of doing that, I think they should take action.
“The people that are affecting lives, they should be named and punished as well.”
James’ Chelsea and England team-mate Callum Hudson-Odoi also opened up about ‘anger’ and ’embarrassment’ he feels at racist abuse.

Hudson-Odoi said: “When we receive stuff like that, we feel like it’s embarrassing to us.
“We are playing our hearts out and trying to play the game as much as possible, to try and win games, and then if we don’t win or do something wrong, we are receiving bad things from other people.
“Seeing stuff like that, it always makes us angry because we are like, ‘Are you saying that because of our skin colour?’
“Or, are you just saying that because you think that you are funny or you want to get a laugh out of people?
“But no one laughs at that sort of situation.
“All of us take that personally as a team, and as players and we are like, we have to do something about it.”

Chelsea striker Werner reveals German Tuchel ‘explains things easier’ than previous boss Lampard due to language barrier

TIMO WERNER has credited Thomas Tuchel with his recent uptuck in form, saying the new boss ‘explains things easier’ than sacked Frank Lampard.
The former RB Leipzig striker, 24, has endured a tricky season since his £47.5million move last summer – even going on a 14-game Premier League goal drought before his strike against Newcastle last week.

But since fellow German Tuchel’s arrival at Chelsea, Werner has look much more dangerous on the pitch – despite having only scored once under the ex-Paris Saint-Germain chief’s leadership.
And Werner believes his ability to communicate more clearly with Tuchel has been crucial, having recently called the new boss’ arrival a ‘fresh start’.
Werner told Sky Sports: “When you have a new manager it is, every time, a new beginning for everybody, so it was a new beginning for me as well.
“I said, ‘OK, I missed so many chances, I missed so many points and maybe I will start now.’

“I understood the old manager very well, it was not because of the language.
“But I think when you can talk German to someone, you can explain some things easier.
“Maybe he [Tuchel] would explain things easier than the old manager, for example, because it can be different when you talk to someone in your own language.
“Maybe misunderstanding a word can make a sentence completely different.”

Werner continued by saying Tuchel’s arrival has given him a much-needed confidence boost.
The Germany international said: “I think he has changed me in this way to give me his trust and change my confidence.
“I don’t care about the missed chances or the past.
“I want to look to the future to get the team back to the top and to score goals.”
Earlier this week, Werner revealed he’s finally starting to feel ‘at home’.
Werner told German magazine Kicker: “His arrival was a fresh start for me and the other German players.
“Even though I have been practising my English a lot I haven’t always been able to express myself the way I wanted.
“I had to be very careful not to be misunderstood.
“Of course that is no longer a problem [under Tuchel]. I’m starting to feel at home a little bit.
“During the difficult times it was a relief for me to be able to talk at times with my national teammates, Kai Havertz and Antonio Rudiger, about other matters besides football.
“At the start I thought that I could carry on doing my usual thing. But you never have an easy game in England.
“The players are all over six foot tall, strong and quick – including the defenders.”

ROMAN ABRAMOVICH certainly doesn’t do things in halves.
The Chelsea owner, worth a cool £10bn, is overseeing the development of his latest toy, Solaris – a superyacht that promises to be the most powerful yacht in the world.

The Russian, 54, must love travelling by sea – because he has had a private navy of yachts – with SunSport believing Solaris to be his EIGHTH over the years.
    SOLARIS
The latest yacht is nearing completion and has cost £430million to build.
A 460ft beast of the sea, it features eight decks, as well as a helicopter pad.
The yacht is being built at the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany.

The shed it is being constructed in is larger than Buckingham Palace.
Solaris will have 48 cabins, accommodating up to 36 passengers, and a crew of 60.

    ECLIPSE
Roman’s current superyacht, the Eclipse – with all the work that’s been done to it – is said to now be worth £1billion.

Built in 2010, it was completely rebuilt in 2015 to cater for the high-spec needs of a multi-billionaire.
Incredibly, the 553ft Eclipse has its own missile defence system – should it come under attack.
There are 24 guest cabins, two swimming pools, hot tubs, a sauna, and even a nightclub.
It also boasts a cinema, conference room, children’s playroom, hair salon, and a mini-submarine that can dive to 50m. Yes, that’s right. It’s a yacht that boasts its own submarine.

    LE GRAND BLEU
Worth £135million, Le Grand Bleu was once Roman’s pride and joy.
Twenty guests can stay in luxury onboard, and enjoy it’s many amenities.
Astonishingly, as is the theme with these yachts, there are more boats on board.
As well as a 73-foot sailboat, guests can also enjoy taking a 68-foot powerboat for a spin. And there are two more boats in its internal garage on top of that.
It is now owned by Abramovich’s friend Eugene Schvidler.

    SUSSURRO
Currently available to buy for £16million, the Sussurro is now over 20 years old.
It was built by Feadship, measures over 163 feet long and boasts six luxury cabins that can house 12 guests.
Rarely used, it has been reported that the Sussorro was given to Roman’s ex-wife Irina Malandina, as part of a divorce settlement.
With 15,000 combined horsepower, it is capable of reaching speeds of 46 knots.

    ECSTASEA
Valued at around £110million, the Ecstasea is still one of the fastest superyachts around – boasting 43,000 horsepower and measuring 282-feet.
Abramovich was the original owner from 2004, before it was sold to Pakistani businessman Alshair Fiyaz in 2009.
There’s room for 14 guests, can be staffed by a crew of 25, and can be reached by helicopter, which can park on one of two helipads.
The Ecstasea suffered damage in 2019 when it clipped the Simpson Bay Bridge in the Caribbean island of St Maarten.

    PELORUS
So that’s what £270million gets you.
Built in 2003, the 377-foot long Pelorus was briefly owned by a Saudi Arabian businessman before Abramovich got his hands on it in 2004.
A year later, he lent it to Chelsea legends John Terry and Frank Lampard for two weeks as a bonus for helping the club win Roman’s first Premier League as owner.
Then in 2007 he allowed Terry and his wife Toni to enjoy their honeymoon on board.
However, it was also reportedly handed to Irina in the divorce settlement, who sold it to American film exec David Geffen in 2011.

Currently the second largest expedition yacht in the world, the Luna was delivered to Roman in 2010.
It boats 10 VIP cabins, that are 100 square metres each, as well as a 20-metre outdoor pool.
Like the Eclipse, it also has an anti-missile system, as well as bulletproof windows.
In 2014, it was sold to Azerbaijani billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov for £210 million.

How Chelsea star Olivier Giroud, 34, defies his years with a strict diet and tough fitness plan to keep scoring

CHELSEA forward Olivier Giroud continues to defy his years.
The former Arsenal star was the match-winner for the Blues in their 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League – showing astonishing athleticism by scoring with an overhead kick.

Just like the age-less Cristiano Ronaldo, the French World Cup winner has given longevity to his career with a strict diet plan and tough fitness routine.
And he eats plenty of fruit, vegetables, chicken and fish to maintain his incredible physique, while working overtime in the gym.
    YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
Crucial to Giroud’s health and fitness plan is what he puts into his body.
The 6ft4in striker avoids processed foods, sugar and unhealthy oils – corn, canola, vegetable, and other chemically engineered cocktails.

He chows down on a variety of breakfasts, including bagels with strawberry jam, egg white and ham omelettes, or brown toast with scrambled eggs.
For lunch his options feature green Salad with mixed beans, salmon and rice, baked potato with tuna, or even a tuna pasta.
At dinner, he will have fish (sometimes haddock or tuna steak) with a broccoli, or chicken with green vegetables.

When it comes to eating, Giroud is very careful with what he puts into his body

Occasionally, he will go for a lean steak – with a mixed salad or steamed vegetables.

And because Giroud is so incredible active, he will snack regularly during the day.
Things he eats are dried fruit and nuts, muesli bars, popcorn and banana sandwiches.
    WORKING IT OFF
Of course, this high-energy diet gives Giroud plenty to burn off when he works out.
And when he’s not training with Chelsea in Cobham, he is fully utilising his time off to stay fit with a action-packed routine.
Reportedly, he allows himself just one day off on a Wednesday.
Weekends, if he’s not playing, he does some cardio exercises and again rests.

According to his manager Thomas Tuchel, Giroud trains like a 20-year-old

On Mondays, he’s bench pressing, lifting dumbbells and working his abs using a plate twist.
Tuesdays, he incorporates mountain climbers into his exercise, as well as squats and reverse grip push-ups.
Thursday, Giroud will continue with weight exercises, including a series of routines with dumbbells, close-grip EZ-Bar curls and three sets of pull-ups of five reps.
And for Friday, it’s burpees, a variety of squats, and plyometric lunges. The latter helps develop and improve lower body strength and power, as well as challenge dynamic stability and coordination.
    HIGH PRAISE
With his stunning strike against Atletico Madrid, Giroud became the oldest player to score in the knockout stages of the Champions League for Chelsea at 34 years and 146 days.
But that didn’t surprise his manager Thomas Tuchel, who is in awe of his striker’s approach to keeping himself in shape.
“If you see him on a daily basis, you cannot be surprised. He is totally fit, his body is in shape and his physicality is on top level,” Tuchel said in an interview after the game.

“He trains like a 20-year-old, like a 24-year-old. He is a guy who has a good mixture of serious and joy in training. He is always positive and it is a big factor for the group.”
With the Premier League giants holding a 1-0 advantage going into the second leg, you wouldn’t put it past Giroud to add to his tally this season as Chelsea progress in the competition.
That record will then continue to be broken by this extraordinary athlete.

Atletico Madrid 0 Chelsea 1: Watch Olivier Giroud score incredible bicycle kick as Blues earn crucial first leg win

HE is not just a pretty face, Olivier Giroud – his finishing can be gorgeous too.
Thomas Tuchel, who has done a spot of male modelling himself, willhave fully appreciated the chiselled striker’s acrobatic strike, whichpropelled Chelsea to within touching distance of a first ChampionsLeague quarter-final in seven years.

Oh my, Olivier Giroud! 😍He just loves scoring worldies, doesn’t he!?VAR initially ruled the goal out but it stands as Mario Hermoso was deemed to have deflected the ball onto the Frenchman 🙌 pic.twitter.com/CAweQ8SzAR

Giroud had to agonise for three long minutes before his bicycle kickwas awarded by VAR, having originally been chalked off for offside.
But it was well worth the wait as Tuchel extended his unbeaten run toeight matches with a first-leg defeat of the La Liga leaders inBucharest.
This was his best result to date – and it was fully deserved as theBlues, often naive under previous boss Frank Lampard, were more than amatch for the most streetwise team on the European block.
World Cup-winner Giroud has six Champions League goals this season andthe 34-year-old Frenchman’s experience earned a precious away goal -which still count double in the event of a draw, even without homeadvantage.

The second leg is scheduled for Stamford Bridge March 17 – but that isstill subject to a Covid-related change of venue.
Chelsea have not reached a quarter-final in this competition since2014 – when they were eventually defeated by Atletico in the lastfour.
But Tuchel led Paris St Germain to last summer’s final in abreakthrough European campaign for the filthy-rich French club – andhe clearly has the tactical sharpness to make Chelsea seriouscontenders in Europe’s elite club competition once more.
Diego Simeone’s men had suffered only their second La Liga defeat ofthe season with a shock reverse against Levante and were still withouttheir England full-back Kieran Trippier, due to a ludicrous bettingban.

Luis Suarez and Antonio Rudiger inevitably clashed in RomaniaCredit: AP:Associated Press
Tuchel’s Chelsea has been defensively stout but aside from a narrowwin at an off-colour Tottenham, there had been no serious tests beforethis.
With Atletico, then Manchester United and Liverpool up next, it isgetting serious for the German now – and victory in neutral Bucharestwas an outstanding way to kick off such a series of red-letterfixtures.
Tuchel started Callum Hudson-Odoi at wing-back after his bizarresubstitution at Southampton, half an hour after he’d come off thebench.
And Hudson-Odoi responded with verve and vigour – linking up well withfellow English youngster Mason Mount on several occasions.
It has been a shaky old start for Chelsea – Mount suffered a bookingthat rules him out of the second leg and Edouard Mendy got away witha horrible slip inside the opening two minutes.
Soon Antonio Rudiger was out-muscled and dispossessed by Luis Suarezwho centred across the face of the goal, with Thomas Lemar unable tofinish.
Yet Chelsea were soon passing, moving and probing for an opening.
Mount whistled one across Atletico’s goal, with Werner narrowlyfailing to connect.

Timo Werner played a one-two with Giroud and tumbled in the box butneither his fellow German, ref Felix Brych, or the VAR were impressed.
It was one of those typical Atletico performances – solid, stacked indefence but hardly thrilling. They sat back, soaked it up andthundered forward on the occasional counter-attack.
But their defence was finally pierced by a cute Mount pass whichreleased Werner, whose shot was pushed away at the near post by JanOblak.
Marcos Alonso picked out Mount with a gorgeous curling cross but theEngland man was unsure whether to shoot or cross and ended up doingneither.
Still, this was promising stuff from the Blues – Hudson-Odoi and Mountfrequently linking up down the right and causing headaches for theSpanish side.
Mount was in lively form, slipping past a couple of defenders andsending Werner clear but the German getting funnelled wide.

Joao Felix sent an acrobatic volley over the bar when Atletico broke swiftly.
Suarez was indulging in his usual histrionic villainy, diving andbellyaching to his heart’s content.
But Jorginho was booked – and, like Mount, he will be suspended for the return.
Giroud’s moment arrived on 68 minutes – Mount appeared to have playedhim through, so when the Frenchman unleashed his stunner, the linesmanflagged.
But after a tortuous wait, the remote official decided the last toughhad come off Atletico defender Hermoso – and Chelsea’s celebrationslacked nothing in delirium for the delay.

Giroud has been a European specialist for Chelsea over the last coupleof seasons.
Every time it has appeared as though his days with the Blues might benumbered, he seems to pop up and produce something special on thecontinent.
With so many of Europe’s superpowers at a low ebb right now, thisfeels like a year when one of England’s contenders could have aserious tilt at lifting Old Big Ears in Istanbul in May.
And with Tuchel at the helm, Chelsea have as good a chance as any of them.

THOMAS TUCHEL has piled praise on ‘shark’ Kylian Mbappe – saying he has the ability to compete with ‘the best’, such as Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mbappe has been destined for greatness since his days as a teenager at Monaco.
But, in what felt like a changing of the guard, the Frenchman scored a sensational hat-trick as PSG thumped Messi’s Barcelona 4-1 at the Nou Camp in the Champions League last-16 first-leg last week.
And while Tuchel has called Mbappe a ‘super nice, intelligent and funny’ off the pitch, he’s claimed the striker’s shark-like mentality on it is what will make him an all-time great one day.
Tuchel told BT Sport: “If he wants to be there, he has to push them [Messi and Ronaldo] aside. That is clear.

“Scoring a hat-trick at the Nou Camp is a message and it’s what he demands of himself.
“It is his potential, it is what he has in him.
“He’s a shark, in his mentality… he wants to grab everything that he can have. This is the mentality that you need.

“But once he’s on the pitch he’s a shark and that’s what the best guys are.

Meanwhile, Chelsea kick-off their Champions League knockout stages with their first-leg of the last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid played in Bucharest due to coronavirus restrictions.
And Tuchel admitted he tried to sign Atleti star Luis Suarez from Barcelona in the summer while still in charge of PSG.
Calling Suarez a ‘natural-born striker’, Tuchel claimed: “It was a possibility to sign him in Paris.
“We heard the rumours he was about to leave Barcelona – and who can not be interested in signing one of the best strikers in world football, past and present?

Ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard would have been ‘killed in the press’ if he had hauled Hudson-Odoi off like Tuchel

CHELSEA icon Gus Poyet believes Frank Lampard would have been ‘killed in the press’ if he treated Callum Hudson-Odoi like Thomas Tuchel did.
The Blues gaffer ruthlessly took off the English forward just 30 minutes after coming on against Southampton on Saturday, before publicly slamming his performance.

Thomas Tuchel criticised Hudson-Odoi for his attitude in the draw against the SaintsCredit: Getty Images – Getty

He said: “I was not happy with his attitude, energy and counter-pressing.
“In a game where it was not easy to create chances, you need to rely on counter-pressing to force errors to get the second ball and get the easy chance.
“And for that, you need to be totally on and sharp for counter-pressing and I did not feel this with Callum.
“He missed some opportunities for counter-pressing and lost some easy balls and I had the feeling he was never really in the game.”

Before adding: “It’s on him to improve because we need him in some games from the bench.”
And club legend Poyet – who won four major trophies during his spell at Stamford Bridge – has stated Tuchel can get away with what he did as he’s just arrived in England.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, the 53-year-old said: “I think if this was done by Frank Lampard today, he would be killed in the press by every single reporter.
“But because he’s (Tuchel) new, and because he’s just arrived and he’s doing well, it’s just normal.

“If you make the same mistake one year later and you’re in the same position you get the sack, that’s natural.”
Tuchel’s decision to haul off Hudson-Odoi didn’t sit down well with Joe Cole, as he claimed it was ‘unnecessary’.
And Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has insisted Tuchel was wrong for withdrawing the 20-year-old from play.
