Leeds 0 Chelsea 0: Tuchel extends unbeaten run but Blues miss out on moving third after being held by Bielsa’s side

THOMAS TUCHEL made it a dozen games unbeaten as Chelsea boss but will not be celebrating after his team blew the chance to go third in the Premier League.
And the big worry is that their Champions League spot is under increased threat as a result.

A point at Elland Road leaves Chelsea three points ahead of fifth-placed West Ham.
But the Hammers now have two games in hand on Tuchel’s side to crank up the pressure on the goal-shy Blues.
Chelsea even had keeper Edouard Mendy to thank for earning them a draw thanks to an outstanding save to thwart Raphinha in a game of few highlights.
The Brazilian was unlucky not to put Leeds ahead when he shot on the turn inside the box on 55 minutes.

His low drive caught keeper Mendy off guard and wrong-footed but the 6ft 5in Senegalese reacted quickly and palmed the ball clear of danger.
Chelsea have struggled to score of late despite tightening up their defence and needed an own goal and a penalty to see off Everton last Monday.
Leeds have scored more goals than any team in the bottom half of the table but found it hard to make a breakthrough even though they deserve credit for holding in-form Chelsea.
Leeds did have a goal rightly ruled out for offside when their former academy product Patrick Bamford failed to time a great run well enough and was just the wrong side of Chelsea’s defence when he started a run to latch onto a high ball forwards.

He raced all the way through to the box and teed up Tyler Roberts to stroke the ball hom only for the linesman to raise his flag at the end of the move.
Leeds did get some luck though in the first ten minutes when Diego Llorente smashed a clearance in his box against team-mate Luke Ayling.
The ball cannoned high into the air only to hit the Leeds bar and drop into the arms of relieved United keeper Illan Meslier.
For all the neat and tidy possession play and energy there were precious few clear cut chances and Tuchel will be disappointed that yet again his team could not make the most of the opportunities that did come their way.

Both sides had chances to win it but the final score ended 0-0Credit: PA:Press Association
With 12 minutes left Mendy saved Chelsea again when Bamford’s replacement Rodrigo headed straight at the keeper from a corner.
Tuchel made six changes to the team which won on Monday with a view to next Wednesday’s Champions League last 16 second leg at home to Atletico Madrid in mind.
Mason Mount and Jorginho started because both are suspended for the midweek game with Chelsea leading 1-0 in the tie.
This is Leeds’ second goalless game of the season – they drew 0-0 with Arsenal in November.
And while they will be happy to take a point from Chelsea, top-scorer Bamford’s injury will be a concern.

Chelsea and Man City ‘have already made a move’ for Haaland as they look to steal march in £150m summer transfer race

CHELSEA and Manchester City have reportedly ‘made a move’ to sign Borussia Dortmund marksman Erling Haaland in the summer.
Valued at around £150million by the Bundesliga outfit, the 20-year-old has no shortage of admirers following another stunning season.

Erling Haaland has starred for Borussia Dortmund this season, with clubs queuing up to sign himCredit: AP:Associated Press

The Norway international has banged in 31 goals in 29 games in all competitions this term, and is the Champions League’s top scorer with ten strikes.
Despite boasting a release clause of £65m in his contract that becomes active in 2022, clubs are queuing up to sign him in the upcoming transfer window.
And according to Mundo Deportivo, Premier League giants Chelsea as well as Manchester City have already begun the task of trying to secure his services.
It was reported earlier this month that the Blues were increasingly confident of nabbing Haaland.

Though German news outlet Sport BILD have declared that the West Londoners have ‘no chance’ of being able to capture him.
But they are understood to face stiff competition in the race to snap him up with Real Madrid and Barcelona both eyeing up a possible move.
Manchester United are also claimed to be an interested party, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer identifying Haaland as well as Harry Kane as possible targets.
Haaland could even end up staying in Germany, with Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick failing to rule out a move for the striker.

Asked about the possibility of Haaland replacing Robert Lewandowski, he told Sky Germany: “Very, very much is possible in life.
“Nothing can be ruled out, but that is a long way off.
“He has a long-term contract in Dortmund and is an option for many top clubs.”
Haaland earlier this week became the youngest player to rack up 20 goals in the Champions League, as he hit the landmark in just 14 matches.

Chelsea best XI of loan stars including Fikayo Tomori at AC Milan and Conor Gallagher with West Brom

IN recent years, Chelsea have become infamous for hoarding young talent and shipping them off on loan for a season or three.
The Blues were at it again this season with as many as 33 experienced and youth talent departing on temporary deals.

Chelsea’s best XI of loan stars, according to SunSport

Thomas Tuchel will have some job deciding the fates of those who’ve already been sent away from Stamford Bridge this summer.
With the likes of Trevor Chalobah and Tiemoue Bakayoko only fit for the bench, there’s still more than enough talent to make a decent starting XI.
    SunSport have put one together…
CHELTENHAM SPECIAL OFFER – GET THE FIRST RACE FAVOURITE AT HUGE 50/1 PRICE

    GOALKEEPER – Jamie Cumming (Stevenage)

Cumming is currently spending the year on loan at StevenageCredit: Rex Features
THE promising goalkeeper, 21 – who was on the bench for the 2019 Europa League final – is in the middle off his first loan spell.
Unlike fellow loanee goalkeeper, Jamal Blackman – who is now on his EIGHTH stint away, this year at Rotherham – Cumming has never left Stamford Bridge.
But ex-England Under-19s stopper Cumming has been making an impression at Stevenage – who are 15th in League Two.
    CENTRE-BACK – Marc Guehi (Swansea)

Guehi is currently in his second loan spell with SwanseaCredit: Rex Features
THE versatile defender has been at the Blues since he was seven-years old.

Guehi – who played twice in last season’s Carabao Cup for Chelsea – spent the second half of 2019-20 at Swansea.
And he returned to Wales for the 2020-21 season in a bid to prove he deserves a spot in the Premier League, much like Reece James with his Wigan loan in 2018-19.
CENTRE-BACK – Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan)

Tomori has been impressing at Serie A giants AC MilanCredit: Reuters
Ac Milan transfer chief Paolo Maldini has already hinted at a permanent transfer bid for Fikayo Tomori after his impressive loan stint in Italy.
Chelsea sent the English defender to the San Siro in January to gain first-team experience in the Serie A title race.
The Blues also accepted a purchase option reportedly worth £27m when sending Tomori on loan.
    CENTRE-BACK – Malang Sarr (Porto)

Chelsea signed Sarr last summer and sent him out on loan to PortoCredit: AFP or licensors
THE Blues signed Sarr on a five-year deal from Nice last summer – and immediately revealed they planned to loan him out.
Nice were keen to have him back for the year, but he settled on a switch to Portuguese giants Porto.
And Sarr came off the bench to help his new side knock out Juventus in the Champions League on away goals this week.

DEFENSIVE-MID – Ethan Ampadu (Sheff Utd)

THE Welsh defender-turned-midfielder-turned defender joined from Exeter in 2017 to plenty of hype.
Ampadu was loaned to RB Leipzig last season in the hope he’d join Jadon Sancho in becoming the latest Brit to thrive in the Bundesliga after just 12 first-team games for Chelsea.
But he played just three times and was sent out to Sheffield United.
Unfortunately for Ampadu, who has been restored in defence, the Blades have endured a horror season and look set for relegation.
CENTRE-MID – Conor Gallagher (West Brom)

Gallagher signed a new contract at Chelsea and the moved to West Brom on loanCredit: Instagram @wba
ANOTHER hot prospect, Gallagher showed his undeniable talent at Charlton and then Swansea on loan last season.
And Gallagher has been seizing his chance in the Premier League with West Brom after signing a new five-year deal at the Blues.
The box-to-box midfielder has made 22 appearances for the Baggies so far this term, scoring two goals and notching a further two assists.
    CENTRE-MID – Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Fulham)

Loftus-Cheek has been learning under Scott Parker at FulhamCredit: Reuters
LOFTUS-Cheek enjoyed a transformative loan at Crystal Palace three years ago that readied him for Chelsea’s first team.
But he was set back by an Achilles injury which kept him out for 13 months, suffered in a Blues charity match in April last year.
It has led to him being farmed out again, this time to rivals Fulham, where he has scored one goal in 22 appearances for the Cottagers this season.
ATTACKING-MID – Ross Barkley (Aston Villa)

Ross Barkley has enjoyed a career revival at Aston VillaCredit: AFP
SUNSPORT revealed last month that Aston Villa are keen to offer Ross Barkley a permanent deal following his impressive stint at the club.
The England international is on a season-long loan at the Birmingham club from Chelsea and has flourished in the Midlands.
Despite only scoring four goals and providing one assist in 19 appearances, Barkley has been instrumental in Villa’s success this season.
RIGHT-WING – Ike Ugbo (Cercle Brugge)

ANOTHER 2007 arrival to the Stamford Bridge youth ranks, Ugbo turned heads last season by scoring 13 goals in just 28 games for Roda JC in Holland.
Ugbo, 22, had previously been shipped off to Barnsley, MK Dons and Scunthorpe – but is now spending the season in Belgium with Cercle Brugge.
STRIKER – Michy Batshuayi (Crystal Palace)

THE Belgian star moved from Marseille to Chelsea for a whopping £33m in 2016.
But, having managed just eight goals in 48 Premier League games, he has been spending the season at Selhurst Park – where he spent half of the 2018-19 season.
Batshuayi – who has only managed one goal this term – has also spent time out on loan at Borussia Dortmund and Valencia during his time at Chelsea.
    LEFT-WING – Kenedy (Granada)

THE Brazilian arrived from Fluminese in 2015 with what appeared to be a bright future.
However, Kenedy has struggled in loan spells at Watford, Newcastle (twice) and Getafe and has been spending 2020-21 at Granada.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel lauds ‘dominant’ Kai Havertz as tactical switch sees £70m German ‘step up’ in Everton win

THOMAS TUCHEL lauded Chelsea playmaker Kai Havertz after his dazzling display in the 2-0 victory against Everton.
The German has underwhelmed since joining from Bayer Leverkusen for £70million in September, but finally exhibited his talents in the win over the Toffees at Stamford Bridge.

Kai Havertz’s performance against Everton was praised by Chelsea boss Thomas TuchelCredit: Reuters

It was easily the 21-year-old’s best performance in the Premier League, with Tuchel vindicated in his choice to start him in a new false nine position.
Havertz was deployed in the centre of Chelsea’s attaack, with Timo Werner shunted out wide.
So far this season Havertz has played in a number of positions, including as a No10, a deep-lying midfielder or even out on the wing.
But he thrived playing further up the pitch and was unlucky not to score himself after having one strike ruled an own-goal and another in the second half ruled out by VAR.

Speaking after the match, boss Tuchel told BT Sport: “We deserved to win. It was a very difficult first half but we controlled it completely.
“Second half we increased our level and had a lot of dangerous attacks.
“Very pleased with Kai. It was the trust we gave him and used the trust we gave him.
“He is a player who has all the ability to be a dominant figure in the offence and he stepped up.

“You see the quality of the players and the club. It is a pleasure to be on the sideline and work with the team.
“Everybody in the club is doing everything to compete at this level.”
Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen added: “Every victory is a step forward. We know we had to recover the ground we lost. Tonight was a very good performance.
“Everton are a tough team but we worked perfectly. It is very pleasing to see the team fighting for the ball. We could have scored even more.
“I am a part of a team that is working very hard. We are all doing our job. You see the way we fight for the ball and the strikers press for the ball.
“We are still far from where we want to be. We are on the right path but we haven’t done anything yet.
“It is a collective mindset – when everyone is working hard. Chelsea is a top club in the world and you have to fight for a place.”

Chelsea ‘planning Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen contract extension talks after pair impress Thomas Tuchel’

Rudiger, 28, has started every game under the German gaffer, while Christensen, 24, has featured in five out of the last six Premier League matches.
And with the pair’s contracts to expire in 2022, it has been claimed that the Blues are keen to tie them down to new deals.
According to the Telegraph, Chelsea are planning to offer Christensen a new contract, though talks are yet to take place.
They state that the West London outfit are keen to extend the Denmark international’s stay as they are aware clubs are monitoring his situation.

And Football Insider have revealed that Chelsea are in the process of offering Rudiger a long-term deal ahead of the summer.
It has been suggested that the former Roma defender wants his future at the club to be sorted out before the end of the season.
But should there be a hiccup in contract talks, Tottenham would be willing to step in and meet his demands.
Rudiger recently hailed the quality of Tuchel, who is unbeaten in his first ten games at Chelsea.

Chelsea star Edouard Mendy sets incredible Premier League record as ONLY ever No1 to keep over 50 per cent clean sheets

EDOUARD MENDY has set a Premier League record after becoming the ONLY goalkeeper to have kept a clean sheet in over half of his matches.
Frank Lampard fought with club brass to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer after losing faith in Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Edouard Mendy boasts the best clean sheet record in PL history

And the sacked boss’ decision has been proven to be a good one, with Thomas Tuchel now reaping the rewards.
Still early in his Premier League career, Mendy – for now, at least – is the best goalkeeper in division history in terms of clean sheets.
Of the 210 goalkeepers to have played at least ten top-flight matches, NONE boast a better clean sheets ratio than the Senegalese ace.
Mendy has kept 12 clean sheets in just 22 matches – most-recently in the 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday night.

That means Mendy has shut an opponent out in 55 per cent of his games – with no other stopper breaking the 50 per cent mark historically.
Ex-Arsenal stopper Emiliano Martinez – now Aston Villa No1 – has kept clean sheets in exactly 50 per cent of his 38 games (19).
Manchester City star Ederson boasts an incredibly strong return, too.
The Brazilian has kept 67 clean sheets in 135 games at a touch under 50 per cent, with the huge sample size only making that figure more impressive.

Ex-Gunners back-up stopper Alex Manninger managed to keep clean sheets in 47 per cent of his 38 games (18).
And former Manchester United stopper Anders Lindegaard also achieved a 47 per cent clean sheet rate, with nine in 19 games.
But while Mendy’s stats have been impressive in his debut season, a huge amount of credit must go to the defence.
After all, Liverpool mustered just one shot on target on Thursday, with Mendy a bystander for much of the game.
N’Golo Kante was unstoppable as he kept the Reds at arm’s length for the full 90 minutes.
But Andreas Christensen was also a rock in place of the injured Thiago Silva – with Tuchel reserving praise for both after the victory on Merseyside.

N’Golo Kante’s incredible Chelsea stats vs Liverpool revealed as Tuchel admits he’s ‘never seen anything like’ it before

THOMAS TUCHEL piled praise on ‘gift’ N’Golo Kante after his incredible performance against Liverpool – with the stats backing up the Chelsea boss.
Mason Mount stole the show with a superb, match-winning goal just minutes before half-time.

N’Golo Kante was in unstoppable form against Liverpool on Thursday

But Blues boss Tuchel was quick to single out ‘incredible’ Kante for his tireless work during the 1-0 win at Anfield.
Kante, 29, continually snuffed out Liverpool attacks before they could even begin, before setting a counter-attack in motion.
The French ace won four key tackles, while also racking up four interceptions and clearances to go with 13 successful ground duels.
Then in attack, Kante got the all important assists, while also boasting an 100 per cent success rate with his four long balls forward.

On top of that, Kante completed every single one of his attempted dribbles in an unstoppable display at Anfield.
And after the game, ecstatic Tuchel told RMC Sport: “[Kante] is a gift. It’s incredible.
“I’ve never seen anything like this. At training, in games, he never stops.
“We look at the data on his intensity and he is incredible.”

Tuchel concluded: “He really is a gift.”
Andreas Christensen also put in a superb performance in the absence of Thiago Silva – who has returned to training following a month-long absence.
And Tuchel was quick to credit the Dane for his strong showing on Merseyside after he won all of his aerial duels, made nine clearances and completed 91.5 per cent of his passes.
The Chelsea chief added: “He is brave, strong in individual challenges and very brave and intelligent in our build-up.
“He plays with a lot of confidence and I am absolutely happy with his performance.
“How he has stepped up is a big part of our performances.”

Klopp vs Tuchel head-to-head: Records and trophies compared as Chelsea prepare for visit to Liverpool tonight

LIVERPOOL host Chelsea in a massive six-pointer in the race for a Premier League top-four spot tonight.
The Blues sit one point and one place above the injury-stricken Reds in fifth and sixth respectively.

How Klopp and Tuchel compare ahead of Liverpool vs Chelsea

And in what could be a tense affair, it could all come down to which manager gets their tactics right.
Jurgen Klopp, 53, and Thomas Tuchel, 47, will do battle in what is somewhat-crudely being dubbed ‘Master vs Apprentice’.
The two have played against each other 14 times dating back to their time together in Germany, with Klopp winning NINE of their 14 encounters, losing just twice.
Most-recently, Klopp’s Liverpool faced Tuchel’s PSG in the 2018-19 group stage, with the bosses winning one game apiece.

Eerily, the two German bosses have followed a similar career path, with Tuchel just a few years behind.
Both got their managerial break at Mainz – with Tuchel also running the show at Augsburg’s second XI.
Klopp and Tuchel both then moved to Borussia Dortmund.
After starring at the Bundesliga club, the two bosses were then lured away by European giants.

Klopp, of course, took over at Liverpool replacing Brendan Rodgers, while Tuchel succeeded Unai Emery at Paris Saint-Germain.
Tuchel recently took over from Frank Lampard at Chelsea having been harshly sacked by PSG.
And the Blues boss is hardly thrilled to compared to Klopp.
Tuchel claimed: “It’s nice to be compared, but it’s not nice because it does not tell the truth.
“We are not half as close as everybody thinks. It was not like I joined the academy of Mainz, and Jurgen was there as a head coach – that never happened.”
Klopp served as Mainz boss between 2001 and 2008, while Tuchel took over for five years between 2009 and 2014.
The now-Liverpool boss spent seven years at Dortmund between 2008 and 2015 before heading to Anfield.
The current Chelsea chief succeeded Klopp, joining in 2015 and leaving in 2017, before heading to PSG a year later.

Klopp and Tuchel’s career path has been eerily similar – but who’s on top?Credit: Getty Images – Getty
Klopp has taken charge of nearly TWICE as many matches as a football manager too, with 889 games under his belt to Tuchel’s 461.
Tuchel boasts the better win record at 56.6 per cent to 52.3 per cent – however, his stint at PSG (74.8 per cent) somewhat boosted his stats.
Aside from that though, Klopp is firmly in the lead in head-to-head scenarios.
Klopp has won three Big Five league titles with one Premier League crown and two Bundesliga titles, while Tuchel has won just two (both Ligue 1).
The Liverpool boss has also won the Champions League, unlike his rival.
In all, Klopp has nine career trophies compared to Tuchel’s seven – with the latter winning all but one (the DFB-Pokal) in the French capital.
All that goes out the window tonight though as the two go head-to-head knowing three points will be a huge step towards securing a Champions League spot for next season.
But who will come out on top? The ‘Master’ or the ‘Apprentice’?
