Spain legend Fernando Torres picks best XI of players he has played with and puts Gerrard-Lampard argument to bed

FERNANDO TORRES has picked the best XI of players he played alongside during his glittering career – and put the Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard debate to bed.The Spain star, 37, hung up his boots in 2019 after stints at Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea, AC Milan and Sagan Tosu.

Having also played in his nation’s Euro 2008 and 2012 triumphs – and the 2010 World Cup – Torres has had some highly talented team-mates down the years.
Check out who makes his XI, below…
    DEFENCE
Jan Oblak, John Terry, Carles Puyol, Diego Godin
TWO from Atletico Madrid – the masters of defending – one from Chelsea and one from Spain…
Torres has plumped for Oblak in goal, with the Slovenian stopper arguably the best goalkeeper on the planet at present.
Terry makes it into the XI after Torres’ brief spell at Chelsea, while Spain team-mate Puyol and Atleti pal Godin form a rock-solid back-three.

    MIDFIELD
Javier Mascherano, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard
IN a four-man midfield, THREE Liverpool stars make the cut.
And leading the headlines is the inclusion of Stevie G, who edges out Lampard in the starting XI – playing just off the strikers.
It’s not too much of a surprise given Torres called the Kop idol his best-ever team-mate on announcing his retirement.
Mascherano and Alonso join Gerrard in the middle, with the Argentine at the base of the diamond.
Also in the midfield is Spain team-mate Xavi – helping form a centre-mid Xavi-Alonso partnership.

    ATTACK
Andres Iniesta, Fernando Torres, David Villa
UP FRONT, Torres has picked himself to lead the line.
In his prime he was possibly the best striker on the planet.
He’s joined by Spain team-mates Villa and Iniesta in providing a threat going forward – two of his country’s all-time greats.

Chelsea star Conor Gallagher wanted by West Brom in transfer for next season if Sam Allardyce can avoid relegation

WEST BROM boss Sam Allardyce has signalled his intentions to keep Conor Gallagher at the club if they avoid relegation into the Championship. The 21-year-old has impressed at the Hawthorns since joining from Chelsea on loan in September, with the player featuring in 25 games in all competitions.

And his good form has led to reports that Blues gaffer Thomas Tuchel is keen to promote the midfielder to the first team next term.
Meanwhile Crystal Palace have been linked with a £9million summer swoop for the England youth international.
But Allardyce is desperate for Gallagher to remain in the Midlands, as he believes it will prove more beneficial for him to develop as a player.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash against the Blues, Allardyce told reporters: “If we stay in the Premier League, I’d hope he’d be here next season not at Chelsea.
“I think he’d be better off having another season with us rather than the competition and size of Chelsea’s squad.
“I think his learning and development level has been improved. I’ve seen a good player since I’ve been here.
“I heard about how good he was before I came and think every day and every game he plays in the Premier League he gains more and more experience.
“When you lose more than you win, which he’s experiencing for the first time, it makes you tougher, it makes you more determined.

“And at such a young age to get these disappointments week in and week out could only stand him in good stead about improving his career. He has been a good asset for us.”
Gallagher has spoken of his happiness at being at West Brom following his loan spells at Charlton and Swansea last campaign.
He said: “I was excited to play in the Premier League after a step up from Championship last season. I’ve loved every minute of it. Hopefully I’ll keep developing and improving.
“It’s been a tough season for West Brom so far, so doing the dirty side of the game, the importance of work off the ball [is important].
“Premier League quality will punish you if you switch off, so you need to be concentrated and focused.
“I know people have other views on players going on loan and I’ve been at three different teams, but it’s three different experiences and teams with [different] styles, different managers and players.
“I’ve learnt a lot already in two years. Hopefully I can continue to learn as a player.”

Could Chelsea star Timo Werner be the latest Blues striker flop, after glaring miss for Germany, joining Morata and Co?

WHEN you’re inheriting a shirt previously worn by Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, you’re going to feel the pressure.Timo Werner joined the Blues from RB Leipzig in a £53million deal, and was expected to propel the West London side to Premier League, as he was handed the No11 jersey.
Timo Werner has struggled at Chelsea since arriving in a £53million dealCredit: Reuters

In the Bundesliga, he was one of Europe’s most-feared strikers – netting 34 times in all competitions as he helped his side reach the Champions League semi-finals.
Yet, in the Premier League it’s a different story for the 25-year-old forward. Just five league goals in 28 games doesn’t look like a good investment by owner Roman Abramovich so far.
And on Wednesday, a glaring miss in Germany’s shock 2-1 defeat to North Macedonia just summed up his season and his confidence at the moment.
But Werner isn’t the first high-profile marksman to suffer stage-fright at Stamford Bridge.
Here’s some others who fell foul to Chelsea’s dreaded striker curse.
    ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO
AT AC Milan, Shevchenko will always be thought of as one of their greatest strikers of all-time, mentioned alongside greats like Marco van Basten and Gianni Rivera.
However, it’s a mystery how such a dominant player on the world stage flopped on our shores.
He joined for £31m in 2006, two years after winning the Ballon d’Or, at his peak at 29.
In his first season, Shevchenko managed just four Premier League goals in 30 games.
Andriy Shevchenko was a £31million Stamford Bridge flopCredit: Reuters
In his second, five goals. Incoming boss Luis Felipe Scolari decided enough was enough, and he was sent on loan back to Milan.
Then, in 2009 he returned to Dynamo Kiev.
    ALVARO MORATA
SPANISH centre forward Morata arrived from Real Madrid for £60m – a club record transfer fee.
But it was the start of things to come after he missed a penalty in a shootout defeat to Arsenal on his debut in the Charity Shield.
Although he scored 11 Premier League goals, his form on Europe was patchy with just one strike in seven.
He finished his first season with 15 goals, before scoring 9 in 24 games in all competitions the following campaign.
Somehow, Chelsea got most of their money back by selling him to Atletico Madrid for £58m.
Alvaro Morata managed 15 goals in all competitions in his first season and nine the next, but didn’t justify his £60m price tagCredit: PA:Press Association
    FERNANDO TORRES
SOME Chelsea fans will argue his goal against Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the Champions League semi-final in 2012 was worth his £50m transfer fee.
But the reality is Torres was a shadow of the striker that defenders feared coming up against at Anfield when he led Liverpool’s forward line.
The facts back that up too – with 45 goals in 172 games with the West Londoners.
Eventually, after loans to AC Milan and Atletico Madrid, the Spaniard moved back to Spain.
Since retiring, he looks fitter than ever and owns his own gyms in Madrid.
Torres wasn’t a hit at Stamford Bridge, but fans will say his goal in the Champions League semi-final was worth his £50m transfer feeCredit: Reuters
Since retiring, Torres has hit the gym and his now buff
    ROMELU LUKAKU
THE giant Belgium striker is flying for club and country, scoring goals for fun at Inter Milan, who are gunning for the Serie A title.
Lukaku joined Chelsea in 2011 from Anderlecht in a £17m deal, but struggled to dislodge Torres in the first team.
In his following season, he joined West Brom on loan and was a big success – scoring 17 Premier League goals.
He was then loaned out to Everton, where again he showed his class as a target man.
In 2017, Lukaku joined Manchester United for £75m deal. Amazingly, in his six years as a Chelsea player he played just 15 times and failed to hit the back of the net.

    RADAMEL FALCAO
COLOMBIAN hitman Falcao scored goals everywhere he went, from Portugal to Spain to France and most recently in Turkey.
But in England, nothing went right for the usually prolific striker.
After a dismal spell at Manchester United, Chelsea gave Falcao another opportunity in our league on a season-long loan costing £4m – with the option of making the transfer permanent for £38m, as well as paying him a mega salary of £170,000-per-week.
However, he struggled for injuries and played just 12 times – scoring one goal.
Falcao returned back to Monaco, where he re-found his goalscoring touch.

    GONZALO HIGUAIN
FITNESS problems always seemed to be an issue for the Argentina poacher, who was used to the slower game in Italy.
He was brought to Stamford Bridge on loan in January, 2019 by his former manager at Napoli, Maurizio Sarri.
Sarri had got so much out of him in Italy, but in England the goals dried up.
Five goals in 19 games, with the standout being a brace against Huddersfield, didn’t represent Higuain’s prowess in front of goal.
Since 2020 he has played in the MLS for David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

    ADRIAN MUTU
THE Romanian striker’s penchant for getting into bother was his biggest undoing at Stamford Bridge.
Mutu was a sensation for Parma in Serie A, before he arrived in a £15m deal in London the summer Abramovich arrived as a Premier League owner and changed the football landscape in this country.
In 2004, he had a fallout with Jose Mourinho over his fitness and later was banned after testing positive for cocaine.
His off-the-field antics, including allegedly sleeping with a porn star and sucking her blood in a newspaper sting didn’t help his cause either.
Chelsea sacked him after the cocaine ban and are still seeking damages.

    MATEJA KEZMAN
A FOX in the box at Partizan Belgrade and PSV, Kezman arrived at Stamford Bridge as a reputation as an out-and-out goalscorer.
Prior to his debut in England, the Serbian scored 38 times in all competitions in Eindhoven.
At Chelsea, though, something got lost in translation when he was signed by Mourinho for £6m.
Kezman managed seven goals in 41 games, and was sold for the following season to Atletico Madrid.
Again, respect to the bean-counters in SW6 for getting their money back in the £6million sale.

Chelsea eye £21.4m Porto star Jesus Corona transfer but must get deal done before June or price will increase

CHELSEA are reportedly interested in Porto winger Jesus Corona with the Mexican star available for a cheaper price until June. The 28-year-old – who can play as a right-winger or right wing-back – has impressed for the Portuguese side this term, chipping in with three goals and 11 assists in 40 games.

And the Blues will be getting a closer look at the versatile player when they face the Primeira Liga side in the Champions League quarter-finals.
It has been claimed that the West Londoners could reignite their interest in Corona after failing to bring him to Stamford Bridge last year.
According to O Jogo via Fichajes, Corona has a £21.4million release clause in his contract.
But that is only active until June, with his price tag to soar from the start of July.
Any club looking to secure his services would then have to fork out £34m to lure him away from Estadio do Dragao.
Chelsea are known to be admirers of Corona, with his agent Matias Bunge revealing last year that the Premier League giants had spoken to the ex-FC Twente ace.
Speaking in May, he declared: “At some point we talked to them [Chelsea].
“I cannot say if he’s option A, B or C, now they are rather rumours.

Chelsea star Reece and Man Utd’s Lauren James become first brother and sister to play for England and are ‘living dream’

IN the case of the James clan, it’s very much about keeping it in the family.Last year, Reece and Lauren James made history when they became the first brother and sister to play for England.

It’s astounding that two talented footballers of the men’s and women’s game are even playing professionally, not to mention pulling on a Three Lions shirt and representing their country.
But the London-born pair are living the dream. Part of their success is due to their incredible father, Nigel.
A motorbike accident halted his promising career, after spells at Luton Town and Southampton.
Nigel found his true calling through mentoring youngsters and later set up Nigel James Elite Coaching programme.
It’s testament to him, his son and his daughter would eventually become pros.
    PARKLIFE
Reece, 21, and Lauren, 19, grew up in London with football an ongoing backdrop in their lives.
As well as a father with footballing aspirations, their elder brother Joshua was on the books of Fulham and Reading. Their mother Emma worked admirably for the NHS.
If the three siblings weren’t kicking a ball against a wall, they would be down the park honing their skills.
Often, their dad who would pass on his knowledge and put the three through training drills and exercises.
Lauren and Reece have always shared a tight bond together
The siblings grew up in London with football as their backdrop
Dad Nigel coached Reece, Lauren and their brother Joshua in the local park
“We grew up as a three,” Reece of Chelsea proudly told the Blues official website.
“Obviously, Josh learned from my dad and then it just passed its way down. I started playing because my brother played, and my sister played because I played.
“We all used to play every day together at the park and over time we all gradually got better. There was a field behind my house, with two pitches, and every day I’d be playing football, either in the field or in the street.”
Lauren, a striker for Manchester United, echoes the sentiment that the beautiful game dominated their lives.
“All I ever knew was football, football and football,” she told The Telegraph.
“My brothers got me into football. Whether it was when Josh was at Fulham or when Reece was at the Chelsea academy, I was there kicking the ball against the fence.
“I’ve always had a football and it has just taken me to where I am now.”
    PATHWAY TO SUCCESS
Reece was an early bloomer when it came to his footballing talent.
By the age of six he joined Chelsea’s impressive development academy, where he progressed through the ranks.
James joined Chelsea’s youth set-up aged six

However, it took him some time to find his best position. He started off as a striker, moved into midfield and then had to learn the art of defending.
Once he cemented the right-back as his own, there was no stopping him. In the 2017-18 season, he appeared for England at U18, U19 and U20 level.
A loan at Wigan Athletic the following campaign saw Reece named as their Player of the Year.
Once he made his debut against Grimsby in the EFL Cup in 2019, scoring one and assisting two, he could no longer be ignored for a first team spot.
Lauren might be slightly younger than Reece, but her achievements are just as impressive.
At 13 she joined Arsenal, and because of her experience with playing with her brothers was encouraged to train with the boys’ team.
Two years later, the prolific forward made her first team debut for the Gunners women’s team – beating Reece to the punch there.
She created history in the process becoming the youngest player in Arsenal’s history male or female to make their bow for the club.
In 2017, she moved to the newly reformed Manchester United women’s team to take on a new challenge in a city she never knew.

Since joining the Red Devils, James has thrived scoring 27 goals in 54 gamesCredit: Getty
But that didn’t deter the brave teen, who scored 14 goals in 18 league games as the Red Devils won promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking to the Women’s Super League.
    BATTLING RACISM TOGETHER
As is a sad indictment of our times, both Reece and Lauren have been targeted with online racist abuse.
They are united in their efforts to encourage social media companies to do more with their platforms in stopping racism.
“When we both get messages like that, we turn to each other and discuss it,” Reece said.
“I think everyone agrees and knows that what’s happening with social media and racism is wrong. Everyone says they want to change, but not many things are changing.”
    MUTUAL RESPECT
Although they share a competitive nature on the pitch, Reece and Lauren only have a mutual respect for each other’s achievements.
But Lauren knew she had to emulate her brother by following his footsteps into the England squad.
“We are not usually competitive,” she revealed.
“When he got his senior England call-up, it was like, “Right, he got his, I’ve got to get mine now. That’s probably the only time and I laugh about it now.”
Reece earned his first cap against Wales last October, while a month later Lauren received a senior national team call-up as part of a 29-player training camp at St George’s Park.
Despite their careers mirroring one another, Reece is adamant they can’t be compared.

    “I wouldn’t say there’s competition,” he said.
“You know, she is my sister. Our games are the same, our professions are the same, but it’s still different. I play men’s football when she plays women’s football, you can’t compare them.”
No. But you can applaud their success. They are, after all, living the dream.

Chelsea transfer blow as David Alaba ‘cuts down clubs to join to Real Madrid and Barcelona amid £400k-a-week demands’

CHELSEA are reportedly out of the running to sign Bayern Munich ace David Alaba with the defender keen to join either Real Madrid or Barcelona. The 28-year-old will be departing the Allianz Arena in the summer when his contract expires having refused to agree a new deal in Bavaria.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have been heavily linked with a move for the Austria international, where he is looking to pocket £400,000-a-week in wages.
But according to Sky in Germany, Alaba has rejected the chance to join the Blues.
He is also said to have turned down an approach from Paris Saint-Germain, where the Ligue 1 giants were willing to meet his demands.
It has been stated that Alaba – who can play as a centre-back, left-back or in midfield – has his heart set on a move to Spain.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are vying to secure his services, where it was reported in February that a verbal agreement had been reached with Los Blancos.
Spanish media declared that Real offered Alaba a £17million bonus with Zinedine Zidane desperate to bring him to the Bernabeu.
However Barcelona were claimed to have reached an agreement with the player earlier this month.
Commenting on his future, Alaba declared he is leaving Bayern to seek a new challenge having been at the club since 2008.

Before adding: “It’s no secret that my agent is negotiating with other clubs.

“Where can I continue to play football successfully? That will certainly be important in my decision.”

Chelsea player ratings: Gilmour stakes his claim, Chilwell back to form but Giroud looks lost up front

CHELSEA made nine changes for their FA Cup clash against Sheffield United – and it showed as they scraped into the FA Cup semi-finals.An Ollie Norwood own-goal and a late Hakim Ziyech strike at the death proved to be enough for Thomas Tuchel’s side in a disjointed and lethargic show.
Hakim Ziyech sealed safe passage for Chelsea at the deathCredit: AFP
Sheffield United showed good heart and fight – especially coming only one game after their 5-0 thrashing by Leicester.
Here, SunSport’s Simon Phillips rates how Chelsea’s players starred in their 2-0 FA Cup triumph.
    Kepa Arrizabalaga – 7.5
He was very quiet and rarely called upon albeit a few long-range tame efforts.
That was until the second half when United threatened a bit more and the Spaniard made a few good saves.
    Andrea Christensen – 8
Looked just as comfortable at right centre-back as he has done in the middle of the back three and continued his fine form.
FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN SIGN UP OFFERS HERE

    Kurt Zouma – 8
Solid at the back and he was very good at controlling passing out from deep. Always talking and organising the backline and didn’t put a foot wrong.
    Emerson – 6.5
Looked a bit rusty and uncomfortable with the ball at his feet at times, but largely he did his job well and what he needed to do as he grew into the game.
Sheffield United were unlucky to go a goal down after Ollie Norwood prodded past his own keeperCredit: Getty
    Callum Hudson-Odoi – 6
A good threat out wide, often beating his man to find enough space to deliver a good cross.
It was exactly this that made Chelsea’s first half goal from a resulting corner. Second half he appeared to lose his touch a bit and was poor.
    Billy Gilmour – 8
Like a player who’s been playing at the top level for 15 years, he controlled Chelsea’s play alongside Kovacic and showed once again what a top-class all-round midfielder he is.
Billy Gilmour defied his tender age in the middle of the parkCredit: EPA
    Mateo Kovacic – 8
As always, very neat and tidy on the ball and controlled the middle park for Chelsea.
A few nice long diagonal passes to find Hudson-Odoi out wide, and great at driving forward with the ball.
    Ben Chilwell – 8
He looked much better today after a few poorer games.
It was his shot that Chelsea got their first half goal from and he was very tidy on the ball always looking to be progressive.
    Mason Mount – 6
The Chelsea captain today looked a bit easy to knock off the ball one too many times, and it wasn’t his best performance as of late.
Olivier Giroud had a poor game leading the lineCredit: Reuters
    Christian Pulisic – 6
Not a great game for him really, although he was the victim of a lot of fouls from the Sheffield United players and no protection from the referee.
But he missed a one-on-one chance to score, and his overall contribution was poor despite getting much better in the second half.
    Olivier Giroud – 5
He was very quiet in the first half and it was easy to forget that he was even on the pitch. Unsurprisingly he was subbed off just after 60 minutes.
    Subs
    Cesar Azpilicueta (replaced Christensen, 63) – 5
Was supposed to sure up the back line but he was a little uneased under pressure.
    Reece James (replaced Giroud, 63) – 6
Was put in for his physicality and tried to make the difference.
    Kai Havertz (replaced Hudson-Odoi, 72) – n/a
    Hakim Ziyech (replaced Gilmour, 72) – n/a
    N’Golo Kante (replaced Pulisic, 83) – n/a

Jorginho in subtle dig at ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard for ‘long ball’ tactics and hails change under Thomas Tuchel

CHELSEA midfielder Jorginho has appeared to fire a shot at previous manager Frank Lampard’s ‘long ball’ tactics. The Italy international is enjoying life under Thomas Tuchel, with the new boss STILL unbeaten since replacing Lampard at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are unbeaten in 13 games since the German took over, with Tuchel employing a possession-based game.
Chelsea are also into the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they will take on Porto.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Jorginho says he is ‘enjoying’ the style of football.
He is usually paired in the middle of the park with Mateo Kovacic or N’Golo Kante.
The 29-year-old said: “The coach wants us having control of the game, playing from behind, even when the pressure comes.
“So, for me, it’s a good way to play football that I like and enjoy, and I think it’s better for my characteristics than playing long balls, and second balls.
“When it’s Kova [Mateo Kovacic], his style is to play short, to come, so I know if he wants to play one-two or when he wants some space to move forward and to dribble.
“So, I just try to help him, either give him the space, or come over to help him and give him an option – whatever he needs to get out of the situation.

“With Kante, it’s kind of the same. When you play with your mates, you need to understand each other, and understand their characteristics as well. So, I know that Kante has big power, so I tell him when he can turn.
“With Kante, it’s more about talking: ‘Turn!’ ‘Man on!’ or talking so he knows I’m there for the short pass. So, I just try to give him an option to do a one-two and get out.
“Oh yes, big brains [Kante and Kovacic have big brains]. They have more legs than me, though!”
Lampard had come under increasing pressure after a horror start to the Premier League season.
Chelsea sat way down in ninth place at the midway point in the 2020-21 campaign, despite a £228.7million summer splurge.
And that shocking run saw Lampard, 42, given the boot – with assistant manager Jody Morris also leaving the club.
