      Channel 4 set to become shock new channel for England games after battle with ITV forced rivals out of bidding process

      CHANNEL 4 is set to become the new home of England matches after reportedly outbidding rivals ITV.Since the last auction for games back in 2017, ITV have shown Three Lions qualifiers and friendlies.

      According to various reports, Channel 4 will now broadcast 10 England matches per year to a massive UK audience.
      The Mail claim that C4 have been successful with a seemingly unlikely bid to prise Gareth Southgate’s side’s Nations League matches from Sky.
      England have been drawn in a group with Germany, Italy and Hungary, with games now set to move to terrestrial telly.

      The Telegraph add that the size of Channel 4’s bid has forced ITV to pull out of the process.
      This move is Channel 4’s latest foray into the world of sport, after experiencing huge success in 2021.
      The free-to-air channel struck a deal to show Emma Raducanu’s US Open final triumph last September, with the Brit’s victory over Leylah Fernandez being watched by more than nine million people.
      Around 4.4million also tuned in for December’s F1 finale in Abu Dhabi, as Max Verstappen controversially beat Lewis Hamilton.

      The House of Lords is likely to try and block any potential sale, in a bid to delay the matter until after the next general election.
      Channel 4 could face criticism from some observers for further investing in live sport, with many believing its remit to be giving a platform to the edgy, ground-breaking kind of TV that would not be shown by the BBC.

      Over 2.6million watched on Sky F1 as Hamilton won the last race in Jeddah.
      But those numbers are set to rocket this weekend with it being made more widely available.
      Sky have the rights to broadcast all of F1’s GPs live while C4 only show the British GP live with the rest of their coverage in the form of a highlights show.
      They did come to a ‘sharing’ agreement with Channel 4 for England’s dramatic Cricket World Cup final win in 2019 – so there is precedent.

      THE ABU DHABI GP could be shown for FREE on TV as Channel 4 and Sky are in talks to share the live rights, according to reports. Sunday’s ‘winner-takes-all’ showdown between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen is set to be a thriller and British TV audiences may be able to watch it for nothing.

      Sky are the live rights holders but sources close to Channel 4 told the Times initial discussions have taken place about a deal which would see the race shown on free-to-air terrestrial TV too.
      Hamilton, 36, and Verstappen, 24, are level on points in the drivers’ standings which has set up a mouthwatering final race of the season.
      The Brit would bag a record eighth championship were he to win.
      Channel 4 currently have the highlights rights to the F1 coverage which has encouraged fans.
      But an outcome to the talks is not expected until later this week.
      And there is also said to be a chance the decision may not be made until the weekend.

      Australia, France, Germany and Italy are just some of the others countries which split the season between pay TV and a handful of free-to-air races.
      Hamilton, 36, recognises the sport is far from unique in this approach and hopes fans ‘stay loyal’ amid the rise of followers online.
      He is quoted by Motorsport-Total as saying: “I think it’s all part of the business.
      “I grew up watching the races live on free TV, which attracted a lot of fans.
      “I remember that in Spain there used to be four to six million people tuning in every afternoon at 2pm. That was pretty impressive.
      “There seems to be a tendency to have to pay for what you want on TV. You have to pay for Netflix, you have to pay for everything you want to see.
      “So there’s been a transition. The world has changed.
