Wigan smash EIGHT past relegation rivals Hull in a huge-boost for cash-strapped club

WIGAN broke a club record by smashing EIGHT goals past sorry Hull including SEVEN inside the first half in a crucial relegation dogfight.
The Tigers rolled over from the first whistle when they went behind after just one minute through Kal Naismith.

Then they enjoyed a spell of 26 minutes without conceding before Kieffer Moore made it two.
It then turned into a massacre at the DW Stadium as Wigan bagged a remarkable six goals in 18 minutes to pile the pressure on Hull at the bottom.
Moore bagged two, Kieran Dowell grabbed two, Jamall Lowe and Joe Williams also got themselves on the scoresheet before the half-time whistle blew.
Wigan then added one more for good measure in the second half when Dowell bagged his hat-trick.

Hull’s Twitter account practically summed up their performance as they quickly gave up hope.
Their first game tweet read “Wigan score” which escalated to “a third for Wigan” and eventually a blunt “7.”
Wigan broke their club record for the amount of goals they’ve scored in a league game and also became the first English side to score seven goals in one half of football since 2015.
It is a huge blow for Hull’s Championship survival hopes and will head into the final two matches inside the bottom three.

But it is a massive boost for in-form Wigan who are set to be docked 12 points at the end of the season after they went into administration.
Wigan are being forced to sell players in order to pay the rest of the squad’s wages until the end of the season.

They have 45 points after their deduction with a game away at struggling Charlton next.
Charlton currently occupy 21st spot on 46 points but Wigan will head to The Valley in a remarkable run of form.
They have lost just one of their last 12 matches that came against promotion-chasing Brentford.

Steven Gerrard ’emerges as shock target for Bristol City’ as ambitious Championship club look to poach Rangers boss

STEVEN GERRARD has reportedly emerged as a shock managerial candidate for ambitious Bristol City.
Billionaire owner Steve Lansdown is on the search for a new boss after sacking Lee Johnson last weekend.

The Robins sit 11th in the English Championship after a winless run of nine games.
And the Daily Express reports that Rangers gaffer Gerrard features high up on his shortlist.
Gerrard has yet to lift any silverware during his two years in Scotland but the Ibrox board have put their faith in him to stop Celtic winning ten-in-a-row this season.
The Liverpool legend has twice led Gers into the Europa League group stages and his side are still to play their second leg last 16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen.

Gerrard is under contract until 2024 and has been widely tipped to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield one day.
And it seems unlikely the 40-year-old would walk out on Rangers ahead of a monumental campaign for England’s second tier.
Ex-Brighton boss Chris Hughton, Charlton gaffer Lee Bowyer and Plymouth Argyle manager Ryan Lowe are also being considered for the vacant role.
But it’s said that Lansdown believes Gerrard to be the outstanding candidate as the Robins target Premier League promotion next year.

Meanwhile Michael Beale insists that no-one at Ibrox is writing off the club’s chances of overhauling Bayer Leverkusen to reach the Europa League’s last-eight shoot-out.
A last minute goal in the first leg means Rangers must score three times in the closed door match at the Bay Arena to have any chance of progress.
But the key member of Steven Gerrard’s coaching staff shot down the notion that the Ibrox side will be going there to make up the numbers.
He told Rangers TV: “We made the job a lot tougher for ourselves in the last minute of that game and that last minute goal hurt us.
“We had a couple of chances in that game to equalise. I remember Morelos has one and Borna [Barisic] with a great free-kick.
“But they are a fantastic team.

“I think we know that Leverkusen are a really good side and are one of the favourites for the tournament but we will go there and give them hell for leather and see what happens.
“But by no means are we writing ourselves off just yet. We have made it very difficult but it’s football and who knows in that game with them not having the passion of their fans that might open an opportunity.
“But we are really looking forward to it and to have Aberdeen in our opening league game and Leverkusen four days later we really have something to work towards now.”

Wigan desperate to offload with two potential buyers put off by crisis club’s £19m payroll

CRISIS club Wigan Athletic are ready to move out more players in a desperate rush to tempt a buyer.
The Latics are fighting for their lives on the pitch and, off it, in an EFL court appeal against their 12-point deduction for going into administration.

    3

Kyle Joseph is one of several players potentially leaving Wigan this summer
But the transfer market could yet be the hardest battle of all.
Administrator Gerald Krasner hopes to raise about £5million for bills that include payments to Barnsley, Everton and Portsmouth due next month.
Midfielder Jensen Weir has left for Brighton, but Wigan need to shift more players in a rush.
I can also reveal that TWO interested parties have looked at the club’s books but the £19m payroll put them off.

Even if the Latics get the financial benefit of staying in the Championship next season, it would still mean fortunes are needed to keep the club going.
However, Sheffield United have joined Leicester in the chase for young Wigan striker Kyle Joseph.

The Blades like the Scotland youth cap, who could be snatched from the troubled outfit for a low fee.
Foxes have been chasing Joseph, while Celtic also admire him. In the end the decision will be down to the club that offers the clearest route to the first team.

Leicester are also hovering for Latics defender Antonee Robinson if Ben Chilwell leaves the King Power.
West Brom want him, but would have to secure promotion to bid.
Striker Joe Gelhardt could also find a new home as Tottenham, Everton, Southampton, Leeds and Celtic consider a move. Remarkably Wigan failed to lodge a new three-year contract and his current deal has just a year left.

However, any fees raised for those three would not lower the payroll enough.
There could be interest in skipper Samy Morsy and midfield mate Joe Williams, but their wages are high by Championship standards.
Centre-half Cedric Kipre could get a move, while keeper David Marshall may be allowed to go for free.
The payroll will have to drop to about £7-8m even if Wigan stay up. A source close to one buyer said: “It’s a hard deal to do right now with the salaries they have.”
